Interesting video, but realistically speaking, it's not a good argument. You had crazy things in your favor here: You made a presentation video with studio level of quality, which *most* of the people wouldn't have. Having a high quality presentation video brings a lot of credibility and trust to your brand, which not everyone has the possibility to even afford renting such equipments or a space to record a video. Plus, you had crazy good looking projects that no way a truly beginner in UX/UI Design with just some months of studying/experience would be able to make. If you had beginner looking projects instead of essentially cheating using your knowledge of a senior designer, you surely wouldn't get answers even if weeks had passed.
Yet, although having these massive things at your favor, you still suffered to get even 3 responses from potential clients, and still, *it wasn't* guaranteed to be a job. Although you said it was, you went ahead of yourself and judged the current times with the logics of your past experience. Back then receiving and going in a call could mean a job acquired, but it may not be and likely isn't the same today.
So realistically speaking, it not at all viable to get jobs at Upwork. The lesson I take from this video is "Become a senior UX/UI Designer, and then *maybe* you'll have a chance to get a low paying freelance job".
Well said
Nailed.
Having a strategy of applying and making sure your profile fits the job posting with attached portfolio examples are the winning criteria in my opinion.
Something you've missed in this is that on many of these calls, clients are now asking for freelancers to perform design challenges first. Assuming that because you are getting a meeting you are going to get an offer is a huge assumption to make in this job environment. Clients on Upwork have started utilizing some of the same strategies bigger companies are now using, namely interviewing way more and making candidates jump through hoops that weren't there in the past.
Thanks for the clarity and in depth strategy Torres. Really appreciate it. Off to tweak and send more proposals now🏃♂
Cool, man. I appreciate you putting yourself through that for us.
Really useful info and feedback.
Amazing insights, loved this video
Awesome video! Much needed encouragement 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome video 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. Great to see how the market is doing right now
So helpful am going to try out some of the key points I have seen on the video👌👌
Having people who you can call is vital in staying positive through the hard times
Very informative and helpful for the new designers.
Thank you very much for this video! I going to start my upwork journey
Thanks for making the effort. A very good idea for a video and well executed too! It's good to know that it's not all doom and gloom, which is a very popular opinion recently.
Thank you for uploading this vid. I've been a professional Graphic Designer for the past 4 years but mostly focusing on Social Media and Ad Creatives. I'm expanding my skillset to UI Designer. And the pay is way better as well.
Thanks Kyle! If you're up to it, I would love a full tutorial/follow-along of how to design one of those dashboards
Thanks a lot for this! I had been using Upwork for years freelancing in illustration/ motion ,but I took some time off to do the Google UX certificate. I planned on getting back on Upwork with some new UX tools under my belt to build experience. Looks like it may be a solid plan.
Definitely worth giving it a try. I think you’ll have a big advantage with the illustration experience. I’m sure that will translate over to great interface design.
This video is so well made , it deserves a million views wtf
Valuable Insights🔥
I'm a newbie but it seems to me you based your success on the fact you basically gave your service away for nothing. You're making poverty level income at 15$ hour
Based on my experience that’s how everyone starts on Upwork. My first project was $10 😅 and 5 projects later I charge $35 per hour.
Gotta break in somehow. That number is bound to go up as the reviews come in.
Yeah I agree it's not much.. But this strategy is good for getting your foot in the door. I started off as a graphic designer and it was the same process as this, get your foot in the door with real clients, start off cheap, build up your credibility and portfolio and you will make a lot more. Now I'm an experienced UX designer and used freelance to get some portfolio work initially, and it wasn't long at that point that I landed a great job. I definitely wish it wasn't this way but the market is so competitive rn 😭
Great idea!
What clients want is what actully helped you. Be good (portofolio) meet deadlines(be consistent) communication(selling urself) i also think niching down a bit would help eliminate much competition.
Thank you brother.
Awesome video
Thank you for this video. I am a self-taught UI/UX designer and it's been 9 months since I started working on UI/UX designing. I have been practicing consistently and have also done a lot of voluntary work. For the past 9 months, I have been designing something every day. The interesting thing is that I haven't created my profile on Upwork yet, simply because I am not good at communication. Can you tell me something to improve my communication skills?
Chat-gpt, friend. Leverage AI
Subscribing for the Doggo cameos
Great video. What was the conversion rate like? How many proposals did you send vs. responses?
Thank you! I sent about 30 proposals total, so roughly a 10% response rate.
Hey yoo let the dog sleep brother 😂❤
Haha! He hates that I started making videos
@@kyletorres4754 lol thats really whats his face said 😂😂😂💔
Nice tips bro, thanks for sharing.
But I have a little ordeal. Before now I have an existing Upwork account as a writer with some few reviews from client. Can I go back and transform it to a Ui/Ux account?
Will that affect my credibility?
What a coincidence. I've been also going through this phase and I exactly find out same strategy.
how are you setting up your videos? I love the “in home” look, but it’s hard to get it to look clean.
I'm curious if the result would be different if you make a fake profile for POC
Hello, I am a beginner in graphic designing and cant even think of freelancing cuz of its competitive nature so I am letting myself to look for internships first to gain some hands on experience on projects. I have developed deep passion in this work that I also want to learn Ui/Ux, can a beginner in graphic design learn ui/ux or should I wait and gain some experience and then learn ui ux?
Oh, you definitely can! In fact, I would recommend it imo. There is quite a bit of overlap between graphic design and UI/UX, and learning UX while learning graphic design can strengthen your skills in both, making you a stronger candidate for higher paying jobs. I started off as a graphic designer and I wish I had started learning UX/UI from the beginning. Being skilled in graphic design can make you a strong UX/UI designer because it equips you with a deep understanding of both aesthetics and functionality. For instance, the principles of design you apply to making visually appealing graphics are also fundamental in creating user-friendly interfaces.
It seems to be, someone just starting out as UI Designer needs to under set their hourly rate. Companies are more willing to take a chance with less money at risk.
Once the designer has one or two projects completed and listed on their profile with feedback ratings, the hourly rate can be increased.
Again. I believe this is possible because the designer is now more trust worthy and companies will have additionsl confident spending more and feel there is less risk of losing/spending money if things do not work out. Thoughts? 🤔
How did you end up sending out so many proposals? Doesn't upwork require you to buy connects to apply to more and more jobs?
Yeah I spent about $50 to send out all of those proposals. I wanted to send out more for the challenge but it was getting expensive.
@@kyletorres4754 Oh so it does cost quite a bit. That's discouraging. Do you reckon it's worth it overall for someone to invest money in sending out connects to build their profile up? or do you think the benefit does not outweigh the cost by that much?
I have a question Kyle, I'm 15 currently and learning UI because I want to do it as a career in the future I will be done with school in around 3 years. Do you UI design would still be a good option then?
Could you make a video on how you make the proposals?
hi, how does the connects work on upwork, can anyone help me? like is it right for me to buy them? any other alternatives?
But what about connects you spend and buy to propose?
Yeah, I was only able to send some proposals for free...
hey , man i suggest for making video on how to write eye catching proposal strategy for attention of Client with upwork algorithm.
so is it worth to buy connects while you didnt get any job?
Is studying ux at uni still a viable career path for the future? It's confusing and scary with all information online. 😢
How did you send 15 proposals at once?? Upwork only allows you to send 3 o 4 a month max!
Can you share the proposals you sent?
Superrrr🎉
How can we get these certificates for free
Did you receive a lot of fake proposals with your experiment? Like, did you get more than 3 interviews but filtered them out for being fake? My biggest concern as a new designer is wasting a bunch of time just to get scammed
I’ve definitely seen some job postings that seemed fake but just ignored them. I think it’s normally pretty easy to see if it’s a legitimate company from the posting.
your dog is so cute 😍🥰🥰
$15 an hr as a UI/UX designer is a disgrace, although it is Upwork and I've noticed a lot of clients on there are looking for cheaper designers, even in the past. Nonetheless great video!
It absolutely is. I definitely don’t think someone should maintain that price long term. I think competing on price is only good for getting the first client.
is it applicable for frontend developer?
I would imagine that many of the same principles apply for developers on Upwork. I’m just not sure exactly what kinds of projects would make you stand out to clients.
The issue is the cost. Upwork has become a race to the bottom.
In general, the video is very good, but sending out a lot of proposals now is hard on your pocket) 23 connections for many vacancies, this is not what you want to see. 15 dollars is 5 applications, 5 applications are just nothing, if you spend 100 dollars to get a job for 500 dollars - 10% Upwork commission. It doesn't look too impressive, but I agree it's better than nothing!
Step 1: Create a problem.
Step 2: Give a solution that should have been the actual product.
Step 3: Call your self genius!
But good ad though XD
Audio too low

Hey, it's really amazing work 👍🏻
sorry, but you made some mistakes. I hope you fix
it because you needed now
And when you do it, it will increase your views and subscribers
exponentially. Hope you understand🥰
btw BEST OF LUCK ❤❤
So basically what you found out is that upwork is not a place to use, as you have to lower your standard rate by 50%
If you work at a lower rate for a few projects, it's much easier to charge more after that.
so where can I find a place where my first client will pay me 30 an hr?
To be honest upwrok is become hard , i am top rated on the platform and still struggle to score jobs
Go $5 per hour. You will definitely get 50 + responses.
So the insight is have a low rate and excellent UI skills??? lol
Yeah ... so basicly life in a 3rd Country .. make 15 dollars per hour and work like a bot ...
Pretended? haha jk! great video idea :)
you cant win in that platform with that hourly rate vs ASIAN not unless you build your credibility or you get a job that preferred workers from the US. the tactics of most people that in upwork is to work very cheap at first then after building your 5 star reviews and have some job history, thats the time that you will charge higher gradually to your desired hourly rate
Your voice is hard to hear. Make it a bit louder.
5:47 was that your boyfriend?
15$/hr as a beginner??? Thats not anything to be proud about tho…
Yeah that is only to get a couple of reviews. A beginner should raise their prices quickly after that.
I have applied for about 400 jobs over the last year and a half and had to get a retail job to pay my bills and live. I have 5 years experience and a Bachelor of Design with Honours. Design is a fucking joke.
Kyle, bro, great video and very helpful! Where can I find your social networks to follow your content more closely? I've searched on Instagram and had no luck.
15$ per hour ? haha bro are you even listen to yourself. how can you life from that ? How can you say this is a win. This proofs upwork is useless for everyone that doesnt life in a 3rd Country where 15 Dollars per hour is a good rate. I bet your Rate right now is more like 100+ per hour.
If you are just starting that's how it goes, you can raise after you get reviews and people can trust you can do great work for them.
as a third country citzen, this is really true, lmao
i got a 35$ job and made about 20% of minimum wage
As 3rd world country citizen... my advice to you is better go for a skill where you have an edge over us. For example copywriting... most of these jobs on upwork are looking for native English speakers and are willing to pay higher rates.
For skills where we (3rd world country citizens) can outperform you... you will face tough competition.
@@Shahbaz_Sayyed i point was that his video was saying " that upwork" still works... But he clearly is dishonest because he would not can do work for 15 Dollars per hours. Someone from a 3rd country yeah.. since he doesnt need to pay like 1000 $ Rent per month alone. Thank about it... if you only make 15 Dollars per hour you would need to work allone 67 Hours alone just for your Rent. Thats like 1,5 Week alone ..
@@fatjay9402 You are supposed to raise your rates after you get the first few reviews in, what's so hard to understand about that?
But where u get project to make portfolio on upwork
Hello kyle, I just saw some of your videos on RUclips. I liked your videos very much. You have been uploading videos on RUclips since 2020.According to this, your subscribers are very less. If you upload videos regularly and enhance the quality of your videos and thumbnails, then you will be able to grow on RUclips very quickly. I can help you grow on RUclips. I can enhance your videos better than before. If you have time, we can talk in a meeting.
