    Opinions are so funny. You see “messy” layouts where I see clean/organized layouts.
    And you’re drawn to creative layouts where I can’t stand those; I don’t have time and patience to sit around scrolling to figure out how their website is organized.

      Hard to believe I come across his vids twice a year when looking for an specific topic... Always regret.

    I think one problem that most designers have in terms of their site design is that most of them are either bad in the overall design or have bad portfolios. maybe because most of them are not really website designers but UX and UI(mobile) designers. I think this review should only be for WEBSITE DESIGNERS to really see how good they are in their craft.

    I like this one. But I have some thoughts on the minimalism and artistic style in some portfolios:
    #5 (02:29) seemingly features a selfie with a filter (might be wrong, it's not personal) and you said it is too artistic for a designer. #16 (10:06) features an illustration that looks a bit more artistic to me than the one in #5. Being a designer doesn't only mean you need to show off that you are capable of creating good designs for products in your portfolio, but you may also show off your personality. So I think it's not inherently wrong to use an artistic style as long as it suits your target audience and represents you well. I think it comes down to how approachable you seem and if you show what you aim to do and how. But so far for an artistic look. I'm not sure how you can say #20 is too minimalistic, but #18 isn't. One of them is actually minimalistic, the other has, in my opinion, potential regarding use of space and readability. I think in #18 it's really smart to suggest the site is scrollable by showing some elements peaking in from below.
    And I think you missed the link to projects in #17 (10:53) right next to "ABOUT ME". Could be a bit clearer where to find work samples, of course.
    Videos like this not only give an idea of what design rules or ideas you think a portfolio should follow, but also how quick hiring or contact decisions can be made. While I think you should get to know someone a bit in order to make sure you can work with them, I think this video also conveys how quick first impressions can have influence.

    Sometimes I absolutely agree with your view on typography in given examples, partially agree. For example first one - there is only a mistake -- in addition to color and understroke selection there are differences in weight which still can work if only it wasn't too little in contrast and be the pretty workable maximalist solution. Of course, you have a brief glance and tell your impression of composition which is totally understandable.

  • @jmfariasdev
    @jmfariasdev 11 месяцев назад +2

    Majority of designers underlook typography and spacing, some people here felt butt hurt which is understandable, not everyone know how to take constructive criticism thus never allowing improvement on their work.

    As a designer, I see many passionate portfolios. However, I understand that a recruiter needs to quickly skim through them, and they may not always be a designer themselves. This makes personal evaluation crucial.
    Therefore, one rejection doesn't mean all recruiters will feel the same.
    This video is valuable as it provides insights into the opinions and thought processes of a recruiter.

    One major problems I've seen so far is vertical spacing between lines of text. In conclusion, mastering one of the design the levels of the design process, might just be your one way ticket.

    It's a little underwhelming seeing that you passed on some of them that tried to be a bit more creative while staying a minimum user friendly. I get that we're in an era where everything is modernised and simplified, but it's also the reason why a lot of websites nowadays feel soulless and lacking personality.

    How is it helpful. "Good, nice, not good" - there is no real reasoning behind the assessment - is it your personal preference, is there objectively something wrong, is something overused or what exactly can be improved? It would be better to review 3 portfolios and explain the reasoning, mistakes or also differentiate why something might be not to your taste but objectively OK.

    the last one, that one which you called childish and that one with the green arrow(#11). those were some pretty great and simple designs. I am not a pro designer though but if I had a company I would probably hire them. But the #4, It was too basic and a photoshoped picture on the background with no work example. I would never hire that person. The #3 one is too minimalistic in my opinion.

    I don't think any of these portfolios were really good. A few had some nice elements, but overall it is really dissapointing that people can't present their work properly. Especially when you work in the digital industry. Just hire another expert in the area that your skills are lacking, and improve your website.
