I know I make a lot of comments, but don't take that the wrong way. I very much appreciate your work and I learn something new with every one of them. I would just like to mention that at 28:12 you comment that airspeed deteriorates exponentially. Without power, your airspeed is overwhelmingly governed by the effects of the total drag curve. I think your demo is the best I've ever seen that shows how that works. The curve is usually steeper on the lower airspeed side of the point of minimum total drag, thus airspeed bleeds off at an increasing rate as it decreases.

This is interesting b/c in Canada our training is to start our descent at the turn from downwind to base rather than abeam the numbers as I see in many videos. There are many little differences between FAA and TC rules for training but it is mainly about being consistent.
That’s right. Consistency is key. Are you lowering 2 notches of flaps right away? Just curious
@@FreePilotTraining I was taught to reduce power and pitch for ~75kts at the downwind to base turn, lower 1st notch of flaps in the white arc, 2nd notch at/after the base to final turn, and full flap on short final. This is in a C172.
@@HamBown nothing wrong with that at all. That’s just my technique. It’s just good to do the same thing every time until you get enough experience

“Left base four 36” to you newer students eliminate using 2 or 4 before giving a runway. This can easily be confusing for other pilots listening to you and can be a safety hazard. “Left base three six” is all you need to say.

Thanks! Funny that you should say that. I usually ale my radio calls like that, but for the sake of the video, I try to be more clear lol
in Europe, correct phraseology would be "Left base runway three six". Same for other legs. Saying "runway" gets rid of ambiguity in the case of, for instance, runway 26 (two vs to). "Short final two six" vs "short final to six".

This was an Awesome instructional video and The only time I have seen someone memorise a checklist and was required was fighter pilots in Canada on a documentary watching students becoming a fighter pilot. I understand you simply don't have time to use a paper checklist when the enemy is comming . they won't wait till you go through the paper checklist lol

Excellent video well done 👨✈️can you do a side slip to positioning your self centreline to the runway with a p28 ? Cessna doesn’t allow because it takes the airflow away from the horizontal stabiliser and you will end up with a tail stall,
I will try that at high altitude and see how much effect there will be

I never thought about chair flying the pattern, usually I chair fly to practice maneuvers at home. My instructor said my landings were a lot better!

Good video, you need to practice keeping your nose wheel off longer, 3 point landings are easy to cause purposing and prop strikes.

I really like your gross control movement when necessary and then take half out. I continue this with dynamic proactive rudder only movement when we capture the centerline extended. The camera eye is a bit back from yours I think and really shows up the dot moving inches left and right of the centerline with any aileron movement once you have captured centerline extended. Walk the rudders finely now. By dynamic proactive continuous rudder movement and no aileron movement, the dot will stay on the centerline. The tail will wag a bit but the dot will be almost frozen on the centerline. Get really stabilized on short final and have both you and the student remove hands from the yoke. Use rudder only to bracket the centerline finely. Keep the dot exactly on the centerline. Even with the light gusts you had, you would have hit my thumb jammed under on side of the yoke or stick. Ailerons and with them adverse yaw is the absolute major disturbance to longitudinal alignment. Coordination is working with the gross changes to correct. When far from centerline extended we need to turn to correct. Once on centerline we need only rudder to bracket and thereby nail the centerline from there on in regardless of crosswind (side slip approach) or gusts (rudder brings the wing back up without over controlling) crab (butt to centerline with wings level can be nailed only with rudder and no aileron.) You are on the right track with your ten tips except for dynamic proactive rudder. While necessary to keep tailwheel from ground loop, nose gear will correct once it comes down. That, however, is where the squeak and black marks come from. In that C-130 you have the centerline between your legs (the nose would have you in a 45 degree crab) and you can differential the throttles a bit I guess. You also have a big rudder. Anyway, this one is major in my experience. I can't help much with the stabilized approach as I was always no more than 200' up.

Apart from superb content, how effective is the headset ear sealing of your David Clark? There might be some difference in the ANC function of different manufactureres. But wearing glasses and a basecap myself I think it all starts with good ear sealing under real conditions, i.e. with glasses and basecap on.
I actually don’t have a problem with an ear seal because the sunglasses I have on are specifically designed for headsets. They’re super thin and fit great under hats and headsets. The David Clark’s are great. The sound quality isn’t quite as good as the Bose A-20s, but I personally like them better for everything else
160 hr PPL here, I still find your explanation very helpful. The only question is why the touch-downs in this video appear to be flat with all three wheels contacting the concrete at the same time. I was taught to always get the mainwheels touching down first and keep the nose high as long as I can for airbrake effect.
Thanks! My mains usually touch down before the nose. One rare occasion, I’ll have a three point landing. I’ve found that the smoothest touchdowns are achieved when the nose touches right after the mains. A lot of instructors teach students to raise the nose way up, but this really isn’t necessary, and often results in a balloon. I typically only use the airbrake on short field landings. There is generally not a need to airbrake on normal landings.
@@FreePilotTraining Your advice is enlightening - a smooth landing does not necessarily require a high AoA flare.
In my PPL training I had four different instructors at different times(the instructors were part time in our club). Interestinly they had different styles and preferences. One of them wanted me to flare like a space shuttle - basically you won't be able to see the centre line at the moment of touchdown. She owned a chipmunk. while another was never keen to raise the nose too high. In touch-and-go he always told me to "push everything forward" (yoke carb throttle) immediately after touchdown - he was a B737 pilot. Another instructor encouraged me to touch down on one main first in cross wind. He flew a motor glider. My last instructor preferred airbrake as he wanted me to be prepared for short grass strip.
Here in The Netherlands, the standard pattern altitude is 700 ft AGL. In that case, starting the descent abeam the numbers will be a bit too early. I usually start my descent after the downwind-to-base turn.

Question, I'm about to start my PPL. Do you recommend using a flight simulator, like Microsoft 2020? As opposed to chair flying?
Microsoft Flight Sim is an awesome tool. Highly recommend. I still recommend some chair flying to go with it though. Anything as simple as thinking through your checklist flows while your driving helps
Where did you get that chair flight picture? My CFI is very big on telling me to chair fly; that picture would be helpful.
Also - I didn’t quite get the flare part. Do I understand correctly to pitch, hold, and then flare once you start to sink?
Last I checked, you can get them for free on Sporty’s. Check the description. I may have put a link in there. For the flare, bring the nose to the horizon and hold it there. The reason I say “flare” is because you will be adding more and more pressure as the airplane begins to sink
I did have a bad landing on my first solo back after being sick lol I bounced 5 times safely stopped it and thought maybe I broke the plane and just requested to exit of the runway 😭I’ve always had safe to butter smooth landings so that kinda spooked me but I swear my approach was perfect I just didn’t flare enough and so I landed flat and the oscillation of the plane went on and on and on
Yes, that can be super scary. Obviously, the best choice in this situation is to go around, but if you just relax your grip on the controls, a lot of times the airplane will settle onto the runway

Awesome video, again, thank you so much! Teacher Josh, if I have a stable approach, but get crosswind, when do I start to align the nose with the centerline with the rudder pedals? Just right before the touchdown or a lot earlier? I tried many things in the sim, but still not sure about this one. Is there a kind of "best spot" for this? Like 400 ft AGL or I don't know? And until then I just fly tilted? And I think, in the sim, it's somewhat harder to feel the real direction of the nose than in real life, just because of the lack of the real 3D environment (I'm not talking about VR now). Thank you for your answer in advance! :)
Thanks! There are two things you can do. You can fly in a crab all the way down final, then correct using rudders in the flare. OR you can use the wing low method. Use a small amount of aileron into the wind, and a little top rudder to keep the nose aligned. Then you will basically fly slightly angled all the way down final and throughout the whole landing

Hey, just wanted to ask how to dond centerline on grass threshold, where often you do not have lines etc.? Many VFR airstrips does not have concrete/asphalt, just grass especially in europe.
That’s a great question. You have to look at the whole runway. It’s definitely more difficult to tell if you’re off centerline, but if you can look at the whole runway it can help you determine if you’re aligned
Yes flap turning is okey also in my view … that no no no put lost of fear in a new pilot flap in the right speed don’t not matter if you turning as fast keep the flap speed

When you roll in and roll out to get back on centreline are you using rudder for this? Or just ailerons?
Yes. Ailerons and rudder should be tied together and then you’ll need to align the nose at the end with the rudder
