Our Lips Are Sealed will always be my favorite song by the Go-Go , it will always remind me of the early MTV / Early 80’s when music was changing , and I being in my early 20’s was changing and riding the wave of all the coolness. Such a special time to be young and experience the 80’s in all of my 20’s. And yeah, there were out of LA, arguably the coolest hippest place in America in the 80’s( my opinion) …
The documentary about them that came out a couple of years ago was excellent. For such sunny, upbeat music the band members themselves were a mess. Drugs and egos eventually tore them apart, as has happened to countless bands.
Jane wrote the song about the relationship between her and her boyfriend. So, our, refers to her and her boyfriend. It was originally written as a slower and darker song.
The song is about gossip and not paying attention to it. Jane co-wrote this with Terry Hall of the Specials and Fun Boy Three. You *must* react to Fun Boy Three’s version of this song.
I agree with you that the song is most likely about other people gossiping about you and how you should ignore what they say. Another aspect that I thought of which might have something to do with it (although it’s speculation on my part) was that they might have encountered some people who were critical of an all female rock band. If they ever did face such criticism their success has proven those critics wrong.
I saw them in 1981 opening for the Police and again in 2016 in Chicago. Im still in love with Belinda Carlisle. lol. ONLY FEMALE ROCK BAND TO WRITE, PLAY AND SING ON A #1 ROCK ALBUM. NOBODY HAS TOUCHED THAT! Saw Belinda Carlisle solo in 1988 also and she was late t come out because her doctor called to tell her she was pregnant with her first child! Let me tell you, she put on a show I can still hear in my head 35 years later!
1 Head Ober Heels -- they were my favorite band in the mid-80's. I saw them in concert once in the 80's at their prime and once in the 90's when they reunited. Awesome group.
I remember watching this music video along with The Pointer Sisters' He's So Shy music video on HBO's music video jukebox before MTV aired. BTW it's pronounced Shaaday.
12:13 They ARE on the sidewalk, note wherethe parking meter is relative to the car and the roadway. But I understand some areas have front of store "loading zones" that are off street so as to not block traffic progress. So that must be one of those areas.
I love the GoGo’s. I was in college when they first became popular. I associate them with doing physics homework while blasting the GoGo’s. It’s a long time ago now. Nice memories.
I bought this 45 rpm single when it was first released and played it on repeat. After several hours, my exasperated father shouted from another room "If you play that song one more time today, I'll break your record and confiscate your record player!" He was such a mild mannered gentleman (and a talented musician), but this song playing for an entire afternoon put him over the edge. In any event, I still love this song. Miss you Dad. Thanks for putting up with the antics of a teenage girl.
For a 180 degree shift I’d suggest giving L7 a reaction. Early stuff like Fast and Frightening shows the chops of an all female band that simply kicks the beach vibe in the face and buries it where it stood. 😂
Addendum; most of this is because of liability for any mishaps on both the surrounding businesses and city's behalf. If say slips and breaks leg, don't want lawsuit. Or worse yet, cracks skull or drowns. So, not against personally.
I always took it as they were saying that they were going to live their lives regardless of what people say. The "Our Lips Are Sealed" line is they aren't going to talk about their private lives is my take. Back then people lived and didn't need to blast their private lives. I partied a lot in the early 80's but didn't feel the need to share my private life with everyone I knew. I didn't need validation and neither did a lot of other people.
When the girls wanna get out and have fun, just let them go. You have to let your woman spread her wings and fly free or she'll never be happy. That's advice from an old man. Yeah, they're talking about haters!
6:06 probably thinking that old swanky hotel and/ or fancy dress ballroom ,Carlyle. Or Doctor Rush from Stargate Universe or Mister Gold /Dark OneDo you really expect ME to sing?)Rumplestilsken from Once Upon A Time, Robert Carlyle.
I agree with your premise. I also think it may have been a subtle reference to the burgeoning female independence. You only get "it" if I want "it" too. Belinda was, and is, an icon and dream of my youth, But, dreams aside, I only want her if she wants me.
12:00 They were "bad girls" in the same as Harvey Lembeck's Eric Von Zipper motorcycle "gang" was in the Beach Party movie series. A "badder" group from a few years orevious was more badder, The Runaways.
As usual Fil from Wings of Pegasus is 23 steps ahead of R. Actually, as Fil notes, the first all female band to play all their own instruments (they were much more virtuosic on these instruments than the Go-Gos), record on a major label--Warner Bros Reprise--and who wrote almost all the songs on the four albums by the original band was Fanny. In fact, there was a recent documentary that came out on Fanny and was shown on PBS in which one of the Go-Gos--Valentine I think--who noted that Fanny was an influence on her. Fanny also influenced Bonnie Raitt. Bowie had hight praise for them. Siskel and Ebert give two thumbs down.

This band is okay, but not my fave. I do like their harmonies. First heard them when I was in high school (81-84). I was more into Ki ooo KISS, Van Halen and 60s-70s-80s metal and rock back then.
It's about ignoring people who trash talk you...haters, exactly!

Recall hearing somewhere that Belinda Carlisle said she had a cocaine problem so bad, she's amazed her nose didn't fall off.
@@TimedRevolverLook at her nose now. It looks like it did and they glued another one on.
Hell yes it was
I believe Jane Weidlin co wrote this song with the late Terry Jones(The Specials/Fun Boy 3)
It was about a fling him and Jane had.
Jane wrote the song about the relationship between her and her boyfriend. So, our, refers to her and her boyfriend. It was originally written as a slower and darker song.
Bass player Kathy Valentine is a beast. Such a great player

The Go-Go's OMG. This song is how it was for ladies in the 80s. Great reaction! We got the Beat, please!
1 Head Ober Heels -- they were my favorite band in the mid-80's. I saw them in concert once in the 80's at their prime and once in the 90's when they reunited. Awesome group.
The Go-Go's are awesome. Beauty and the Beat is awesome. I've seen them live 3 times and even met them once.
I love the go.go's,I hope that they have another tour,I grew up with them.
😊😊
Basically it's about gossip and how people always talk behind each other's backs
This song will never get old. An eternal classic.
You are actually a singer! Love it!
❤❤Go-Go’s
Yes, they're talking about haters...girl cliques...mean girls
The Go gos really know how to rock
I remember watching this music video along with The Pointer Sisters' He's So Shy music video on HBO's music video jukebox before MTV aired. BTW it's pronounced Shaaday.
Jane Weidlin of the Go-Gos appeared in the film Bill and Teds excellent adventure in the role of Joan of Arc.
Loooooved the Go-Go back in the dark ages.
The lead guitarist, Jane Wiedlin, was a high school crush of mine!!! Love the Go-Gos!!
It's such a fun track with a great message.
Let them say what they will about you, just keep them guessing.
This is my 2nd fav song by the band behind only Head Over Heels.
I had a super crush on Belinda as a teen. I'm old now. 😁
We know what it means. We’re not talking about it.

While most guys were falling for Belinda, I was falling for Jane, left behind in the car.
They look like good all-American girls but they partied HARD! Belinda Carlisle had the biggest solo career, but don't overlook Jane Wiedlin
Love them. Especially Belinda’s solo career with Heaven is a place on earth.
I love the go gos, I grew up listening to them, I hope that they come back with a surprise tour
My favorite is vacation

Check out "Fading Fast" off the same album. It's my favorite song on it.
Jane Weidlin, the brunette guitarist, acts. Appeared in Star Trek The Motion Picture.
And, more importantly, as Joan of Arc in BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.
Thank you Roy P
“Vacation”.
Love THE GOGO’s

You should check out "We Got The Beat" by the Go-Gos.
12:55 There was something about that they went frolicking in the fountain but didn't have a permit, so the label got fined. Maybe "naughty" girls.
Addendum; most of this is because of liability for any mishaps on both the surrounding businesses and city's behalf. If say slips and breaks leg, don't want lawsuit. Or worse yet, cracks skull or drowns. So, not against personally.
Belinda was a Barbie doll.
You were right - it's about haters and people gossiping about them. girl drama!
I’m sure I’ve watched her react to ‘Circle in the Sand’ by Belinda.

Belinda Carlisle's solo material is very good as well. Thanks for the video.
I would have went with Head Over Heels.

it has to do with the relationship Jane was having when they wrote the song. People talking about it as scandalous.

10:41 Yes , haters, and gossips. The Go Gos will NOT break any confidences. May as well move it along , tabloids.
hey Mags - check out the all female Bangles cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" it will surprise you
