This was written between the guitarist Jane Weidlin and British singer Terry Hall of the Specials, they were having an affair and it wasn't very secretive, he wrote her a letter and some of the lyrics were included. They then created a song out of it.
Not only did The Go Gos then record it but so did Terry Halls band Fun Boy Three(they sound a little different) but both bands had a hit with their version at the same time.

I absolutely *love* the Fun Boy Three version. It's darker and more downbeat than the Go-Gos (which I also like, just not as much), and Terry Hall's lugubrious voice gives the song a very different feel.

The early 80's were the Saturday morning on the modern era. Bright, sunny, innocent but action packed and lots of cartoon colors. The best part about the music was that it still required real singing and playing, so even the pop stuff had soul and staying power. The drums had swing and bounce, the guitars and vocals had humanity in them. Every track a one of a kind slice of goodness committed to tape and transferred to vinyl. Think I'll go back for another listen.

True story, I was a cashier in SoCal [1997] in a State wide Home Improvement store. Jane Wiedlin (Bassist for The Go-Gos) came through my line, twice, both in the same day. I knew who she was, she knew I knew who she was. I didn't say a word or draw any attention to her. I treated her with the same respect as all are other customers. That's why she came through my line the 2nd time. That 2nd time, she made deliberate eye contact with me, with soft appreciative eyes. She never once carried herself in such a manner that a lot of celebrities do.

Check out the original version by 'Fun Boy Three'...The guitarist from this band was dating one of the Go Gos and gave them the song to record themselves. Fun Boy Three were originally the Ska band The Specials..they are also worth a look... Belinda Carlisle the singer from the GoGos had great solo hits herself...

The guitarist had a secret romance with a man from another group who had a girlfriend. When The GoGo's came back to the States, he sent her the lyrics to this song, she liked them. She finished them & said it was about their time together. They would never talk about it, so their lips were sealed.

One of my favourite songs is FUN BOY THREE singing this song, it’s an 80’s classic.
Terry Hall the lead singer used to be in THE SPECIALS - you should defiantly check them out.
One of their most well known songs is GHOST TOWN (written about Coventry, their home town).
The band famously performed it on Top Of The Pops and then promptly broke up. Terry Hall and other band members then formed FUN BOY THREE.

Well, he did co-write the song together with Jane Wiedlin the rhythm guitarist and backup singer of the Go-Go’s. Her solo acoustic version is pretty good too, as is a lot of her later material.

This is a song written by the GoGos guitarist and also the lead singer of the specials, about their relationship. So there are two original versions and they are different. The Specials version is a lot more serious and strikes a very different tone

After some research it seems Terry Hall left the Specials, and so when Our Lips Are Sealed was released he was infact in Fun Boy Three. The version of the song though is anything but fun. It’s very dark, but a version I prefer to the GoGos one.

Forty years later, I think they're still the only all-female rock band to have a number 1 Billboard album. Not sure what that says about the music industry. Sure, there's been other all-girl groups with number 1 albums (The Supremes, TLC, Spice Girls, Destiny's Child) but I can't remember any other all girl rock groups.
