I’ve owned a Passat Cc GT TDi 170 for 6 years and 65k miles. Now 12 years old and 136k on the clock. Paid £8.5k 6 years ago. Suffered major depreciation but been fantastic in my ownership. Highly recommend one. I do long commutes and get just shy of 1000 miles per tank average 65mpg which isn’t bad. It’s not a drivers car but for long motorway stints is very comfortable. I put 25 mm eibach springs on with the standard DCC dampers.

These cars are affordable to buy. But it doesn't mean that they are affordable to own Most of the five you have reviewed don't have the best reliability record and when something does go wrong it could easily cost more to put right than the original £5k price. You should have said proceed with caution!

Speaking from personal experience, DO NOT, under any circumstance, get the Jaguar XF with 2.7 or 3.0 diesel (same engine that lives in the Landrover). They are notorious for snapping the crankshaft and it can literally happen out of the blue. They usually have a lifespan of about 200K - 250K kilometers. And if you're lucky and don't brick the block, the repair for this requires complete removal of the engine and nearly full disassembly, which will cost you just about 2/3 of the current market price of the car. And if you bricked the engine, good luck finding a replacement, which costs just about as much as the car itself and will also need rebuilding to avoid the same thing some time down the line (probably soon).
I just bought one, it was butter smooth, quiet, no discernible noises or warnings, no leaks, nothing. Managed to drive it for a few hundred miles and then at a rapid pace over the span of 24 hours it developed a misfire-like shake and shortly after this (in 10 minutes of runtime, while diagnosing the issue) shaft bearings started making noise and the engine began shaking fairly violently, only at which point the OBC started flashing oil pressure warnings. It literally went from perfect to complete catastrophe in a flash.
The XF is only worth with the petrol engines as they are far more sturdy. Otherwise, walk around it with a wide arc and don't even look at it.

I love all of the mentioned models in the video, but in my country - Bulgaria (where we buy mostly the damaged cars from other European countries) all of the models except the Mercedes are on the "Black list" for buying, if I can say it like this. Nobody will advise you to buy a Phaentom or a Jag or an Alfa because of all issues that they have after long mileage. But I love the XF and I think one day to take the rist and to buy one

Own XFS portfolio 2012 face-lift, 175k, drives like a 30k mile car. The B and W 1200w audio probably cost more than the car is worth now. The face-lift with the 8 speed is a big step up from the bug eye pre 2012. The XFS is 0/60 5.9s and 40 mpg overall.

    Great video - thanks.
Best XC90 is the 185HP D5 rather than the 163HP, earlier version - this has a 0-60 time of 10.6 seconds rather than 12 making it a bit quicker, but they are surprisingly torquey, so getting up to speed is smooth and surprisingly quick.
A throbby 5 cylinder engine sounds less like a diesel than many diesels but not everyone likes the sound it makes.
On a run, my trip computer reads 37 to 40mpg which isn't bad at all for a 2.1 tonne vehicle from this era.
They also go on - examples with close to 200,000 miles are not uncommon.

We have a 3.0d and a 4.2 NA V8. We get the economy for family holidays with the diesel and we get the great soundtrack with the petrol. They drive beautifully and have all the comfort you’ll ever need. Loads of space for a family car. Going to have the exhaust modded on the V8 to make it louder but not V12 BMW loud 😉.

I have a 2014 XF with the 2.2 diesel, whilst the engine is a little agricultural, it’s a nice drive, very comfortable, I would advise anyone looking to try go for higher specs if possible as there are some nice options like, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control, etc. I have now just passed 150,000 miles and the only issues I have had have been small problems, mostly with door locks, but all were cheap to fix. It can get almost 35mpg as a trip average over a long journey (the 5L is better on fuel than the 4.2 as it is a much more modern engine). It is super comfy as a GT car, plus it is nowhere near as unreliable as people say. The only issue I have had with mine in the last 10 months was 1 broken window regulator. If you can find a well cared for example with a good history they are fantastic value for money.

A beast of a car you have there.
Sadly I had the most bitter of lemons in my Portfolio.
£10k+ worth of warranty repairs before the engine went bang three months out of warranty (2.7d).
      FJSH.
JLR were so difficult to deal with with regards to a new engine/turbos that I ended up just leaving it in Haliwell Jones and eventually received scrap value for it. That’s how much I despised that car.
I’d love a Discovery Sport, and may buy an early one with the Ford diesel, but am already hearing of the new JLR diesels going bang. Jaguar are blaming the drivers for their driving style and even refusing to fix warranty breaks as owners are not reaching the mileage that they claimed they would do, at the time of purchase.
How there isn’t a huge and public lawsuit against JLR is beyond me.
Such a shame as mine was a beautiful car that I intended to, and tried to, keep for many years.

The Mercedes SL is one of the greatest cars…when working. When its not working, mainly the suspension, you will need to have a budget of at least 1-2k a year to maintain it that is if you don’t need to fix the car when you first buy it

    • @nickcook7408
      @nickcook7408 Год назад

They’re only expensive to maintain if previous owners were lazy/stupid/poor.
The competent motorist practices preventative maintenance and replaces components before they fail, ensuring no surprise failures or big bills.

Spot On info on the XF... FYI the N/A 4.2 V8 is one of the rarest XFs in the UK with only 205 ever registered in the short 2 year production life and about 160 currently on the road, one of them being my 1 owner from new 4.2 V8 XF 👌 and yes driven very gingerly you can eek out 35 MPG out of it but eventually it drops to around 28 MPG on mixed driving cycle which is still very impressive for such a large Luxo- Barge 👌 Driving into London it naturally drops to low 20's but what a way to Waft about our Capital 😎 I love it and it's super smooth & very reliable 4.2 V8 👍

So I am finally buying my first car at the age of 40. And since it has taken me so long to get a car, I've decided to go used so that I can get something special rather than an econobox or entry level BMW/Audi.
    I am looking at:
Jaguar XJR (classic style with old school round lights)
Jaguar XKR (Mk 1 or 2)
    Jaguar S-Stype R
    BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe
    BMW 540i (e39)
    Audi S5 4.2V8
    Audi A7 3.0t petrol
VW Scirroco GTI equivalent or R
    Any advice or suggestions?

Volvo XC90 T6 has one of the worst gearboxes, steer clear.
On the 159 the 1.9 jtdm manual also suffered from a bad gearbox with the 5th and 6th gearbox bearings going often. Otherwise a great car.
    I own both (XC90 D5 and 159 1.9 jtdm)
Currently looking for a Porsche 944 that can also be had for under 5k

Alfa Romeo the manufacturer every petrol head should own once in their life.... So they can feel the pain of it always being in the mechanics shop. I knew someone who had an alfa and they only got to drive it 40 weeks in the year they owned it the other 12 weeks it was in for repairs over the course of the year. Luckily for them it was still under warenty.
