Overnight on the unbelievable Arctic Circle train | Vy Nattåg

  • I took an overnight train journey from Stockholm, Sweden to Narvik, Norway. Aboard the Vy Nattåg, I ate reindeer, attempted a shower, and spent 22 hours gently rolling ever northward, through the wild Swedish hinterlands in autumn, to a Norwegian town way above the Arctic Circle. What an experience - despite my original plans being canceled due to track maintenance.
    Note: As of this writing, I can't find the Narvik webcam feed on RUclips. If it comes back online, let me know and I'll put a link here. Thanks

    I’ve taken these trains many times, most of the time everything works but every now and then stuff doesn’t work and i just talk to the staff and they fix it. One time the heat didn’t work, they had a magic button and darn it got hot. :D

    "Raining and cloudy" isn't how it generally goes in Scandinavia - we get our fair part of it of course, but just as often we have lots and lots of sunshine too.

    The Botnia Railroad along the coast up to Umeå that was inaugurated a bit over 10 years ago cut the traveling time by 2 hours.
    There are a number of projects to cut travel time even more but it will take years and years.
    Up in northern Sweden goods trains get all the priority and they don't need to be as fast.

    What luck, getting to see this! I stopped it to stare at that severely red house and optimistically red tree. The shower was hilarious. Great camerawork as usual, Jeremy.

    I am going to travel to Scandinavia in October and would like to take the night train (NT 93) from Narvik to Stockholm. Unfortunately the website tells me that these trains run only until the 14th of September. Do they not run in the winter or have they not been released for ticket purchase yet?
    Thanks for your help.

      They do run in the winter, so I don't know what's happening with the tickets this year

    Language is fun. I am Norwegian, and often think Norwegian when I have to translate into English. "Bil" is a car in Norwegian, and "vogn", i.e. a train carriage, I would perhaps say is carriage or maybe wagon, while you Americans say it is a car.

    • @T1DWanderer
      @T1DWanderer  Год назад +1

      I admit, "car" is not a great term for a train carriage :/

    Really nice! I’m going to follow the same route and I was wondering. Is the phone signal fine during the trip? And is it possible to upgrade in a first class suite while on board?

    • @T1DWanderer
      @T1DWanderer  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks. I think the wifi was reasonable most of the time, but I don't remember exactly because I was staring out the window! I don't know if the train staff can accept payment for a room upgrade on board. If you mean a free upgrade, I'd also imagine not but I don't know. Either way, enjoy your trip!

      Thanks. I'm not sure about the bicycle. I didn't see anyone doing that; there might not really be room. But there may be a way to store it in another part of the train (?)
