So I'm from Turkey and I asked my mom about these cards, because I missed the short lived Pokemon craze that happened in my country. She said she doesn't quite remember it because she wasn't interested in Pokemon that much but she said these cards were sold in grocers and were in some sort of a box or a package. They weren't for playing the Pokemon card game but just for collecting, just like coupons. And when you collect enough of these cards you bring them to grocers and they would give you gifts. But again this could be incorrect because like i said, she doesn't quite remember it.
Hey man, Im trying to identify if there was turkish pokemon stuff like cards and stickers produced officially, not bootleg. Apart from tazos, was there anything else? I keep finding rectangular bubble gum stickers but they all seem bootleg expect for one with a brand logo named ZUMRUT. Do you know anything about that brand?
Given how many pokemon in generation one were either part poison for no reason (Bulbasaur, Gengar) or were stated to be poisonous (Goldeen's horn) I can see how someone could believe back then that all Pokemon could use Poison Powder attack.
I'd say these were like something out of the back of a cereal box or a kid's meal promotion, but...ehhh... cereal boxes and Kid's Meal promotions kinda have the actual real cards now, so...
Those weird grooves in the cards are caused by miss aligning the package and then the press that seals it, press it so hard than the lines show in the card. The sandshrew one probably was so stucked to the package whoever opened it couldn't do anything else but to rip it open.
I had a lot of these types of cards as a kid. Here in Hungary they were really easy to stumble upon while the official Pokémon cards were pretty rare. (Atleast where I live.)
Hop: Alrighty, my rival, this time I’m gonna defeat you! Me: Ha, you fool, I have taught my Inteleon a brand new move! Hop: What’s that? Me: *Poisonpowder* Hop: *visibly scared*
The art they chose for these, as well as the cards they chose to bootleg, suggest a pretty specific time period that these were made. Then there's that one Poliwrath card that throws the whole thing into question.
I somewhat doubt those cards were even considered to be used to play the game. The overall purpose probably was just collecting with some prises as incentive, while minimally copying the stats just because they were on the original cards. I don't think I ever saw any of these cards here in Russia back in the day. I don't think we ever got any card game stuff physically, be it official or bootleg. The closest I remember was the PC game published by pirate company. Also are here any Russian fans of Phelous or even Turkish ones?
Russian here. So there are, and pretty sure there are quite a bit of us, some of them most like been sending stuff to Phelous. Cause we've already seen Phelous mentioning Russian MK DVDs, and bootleg Ninja Turtles books.
Turkish here! Pokemon craze in my country only lasted for a few years and I wasn't around to see that since I was born in 1999 so, all I can do is to guess. My guess here is that these cards were never meant to be played. I think these cards were just made to collect, like coupons. Then you bring those cards to a grocer and they'll give you a gift, based on the amount of cards you have. You collect 15 you win a Pokemon themed beach ball (I think? It could be a football too.), you collect 60 you win a Pokemon themed clock. But like I said, that's just my speculation. I'm pretty sure people who are older than me remembers these stuff better so I might go and ask them.
I ttthhhhiiinnnkkkkk I've seen some playing cards in Moscow in early 2000s? I may be wrong though. I definitely remember playing the game. Was a touch disappointed when it was TCG and not an actual Pokemon game...
6:41 Trans-energy, Venusaur supports Trans-rights confirmed? :D These pokemon bootleg zones always have me giggling like a fool. Keep up the good work!
LOL Oh gosh, these knock-offs are funny. On a side note, if anyone manages to get you bootleg Yu-Gi-Oh cards, you should do a collaboration with LittleKuriboh. :p
At least these are closer to the original card game than the ones my mom got for my sister and I back in the 1990s. Our Pokemon cards was actually a playing card set that were tiny ( 1 inch by .5 inch). We also had a card set that were round (not the typical rectangle shape). Just to give you an idea how diverse Pokemon was in the bootleg zone. You thought the Galaxy Warrior universe was vast and deep, the world of Pokemon bootleg goes even deeper.
Back when I was a kid, they held huge tournaments in shopping malls. The rules were as this: Play Electabuzz, Scyther, and Hitmonlee. Use Bill and Super Scoop-Up. Watch other parents get furious and throw stuff. At least as far as I can recall.
This one actually has energy cards, which most Pokemon bootlegs don't don't, so that's a plus to attention to details; a very small attention, that is.
It's pretty common to see Middle-Eastern or Chinese bootlegs in Russian bazaars. The copyright laws are quite lax in Russia regarding foreign IPs. So this stuff is easy to import.
Ahh Turkey, I know a couple of bootleg films like 3 Dev Adam, The Man Who Saved The World, & I believe they even made a Rambo bootleg movie as well. You may know the 2nd one as Turkish Star Wars. It can be pretty hilarious at times, but beware of the stolen Indiana Jones theme put there for no reason at all!
You should see Turkish bootlegs of Lucky Luke and The Wizard of Oz. I once saw them on TV and they were so bad they were amazing. The Turkish Lucky Luke was named "The Cowboy Who Loves his Horse", the Dalton brothers were always talking in riddles and they became the good guys at the end of the movie. And in the Wizard of Oz ripoff, the girl's name was "Ayşe" and her companions were saying things like "May Allah bless you." when she helps them. Also despite being a ripoff of The Wizard of Oz, it also had elements from Snow White and Alice in Wonderland.
@@phelous I don't really follow genuine Pokemon cards, so I didn't know that. It's just makes it even funnier. Thanks for taking a moment to let me know. Glad to see a return of the Zone.
The lines in some cards are from misalignment in the cutting machines. I have an official Zapdos card with an error like that, and was told it’s the type of error that basically makes it worthless.
I don't know if the mainland has "Great Canadian Dollar Store", but they were selling some bootleg Pokemon cards there a few years back. (They smell like a lot of chemicals D: ) but the flavour text was entirely the reason to buy them. Now, I am just paraphrasing as I don't recall where I last left the deck - but some would say "I am dying of cancer." "I copulate to create my promiscuous offspring." "Penis monster" etc. The enjoyment roller-coaster of "Woo! Getting Pokemon cards! Awwww, they are bootlegs?! Oh wow! The stupid flavour text is amazing!" is worth the $1 a pack. Never seen them at the Dollarama though, only Great Canadian.
Dollarama sells Pokemon cards but they are not bootleg. They are packaged by a third party and sold between $2 to $4 depends on the amount of cards in the package.
@@Nakiatakai Ah yes, the ones that come in clear plastic, but have the cards with the backs to both sides so you can't tell what you're getting? I've seen those as well, but it's usually just 4 cards. So not really worth getting. I tend to see them for YuGiOh cards as well like that.

Is the modding simply so they dont get sued for selling a copy
I'm no copyright expert, but I'm pretty sure they could get sued either way. Whether they copied the art from the actual cards or did what they did here (I'm guessing google images), or heck even if they drew the pictures themselves, Nintendo/Gamefreak owns these characters and is the only one that can sell Pokemon merchandise. Then again these bootleggers might not have been too smart . . . Anyways I'm guessing these were made in the 90's. Nowadays I can go to the Pokemon wiki and find images of basically any pokemon card, but maybe it was harder in the early days of the web.
Honestly my pokemon cards might as well have had these moves because as a kid i never understood how to play the game anyway and just collected and traded them
As a 28 year old, I remember these. These aren't "BOOTLEG", they are "licensed" stuff actually and were sold with "official" Pokémon bubblegums "250.000 kuruş" each (at the time that'd make them 50 cent I suppose). So 150.000 kuruş per card. The appearances are such that they are pretty low effort and low quality and were sold in small groceries in every neighborhood. Kids weren't really interested in these but more interested in official FritoLay Turkish Pokémon pogs at the time. Once you'd collect enough amount you could exchange them for a stupidly small ball with Ash and the gang printed on it, some stupid Pikachu or Pokéball shaped terrible digital wrist watch with cover and some other stuff. At the time iirc, Pokémon Turkish distributor were very wild with copyrights, so bootlegs weren't really a thing unless they were imports from China or something.
