guys.. I know daft punk produced the song. That's why I mentioned it in the video. You don't have to keep telling me. What I meant was "it sounds more like a typical daft punk song", as in, the distorted version doesn't sound like their normal stuff so much.
It's interesting to consider that not only Daft Punk but Gesaffelstein worked on this track, it can explain the sound design too (especially his recent track "Psycho").
Gesaffelstein had no input on on sight. He only produced on black Skinhead and send it up. He also made a version of new slaves but none of what he did made it to the final version. And fun fact if you didn't know, he collaborated with ye again for 2 tracks on Donda, no child left behind and Jesus Lord.
probably because the distortion causes the hihat to be side-chained with the bass and kick drum (meaning the hihat gets quieter when those elements hit) which makes it groovier
Daft Punk ... + Gesaffelstein. both of whom produced the album. the distortion is signature of Gesaffelstein's dark techno vibe. actually, Gesaffelstein's latest album really went back to this style, with heavy distorted synths & toms like this. i'd put some envelope modulation on the distortion & filtering too. that way the heaviness is more percussive.
@BVRNERMVSIC but Daft Punk & Gesaffelstein are friendly with each other. i'd say Gesaffelstein's 'dark techno' style set the tone for the whole album in general.
Also Travis Scott worked on a couple songs from the album including new slaves and guilt trip. Yeezus and 808s and heart breaks is what inspired his style.
@@LeCumminz Human After All inspired pretty much everyone. including Ed Banger & Gesaffelstein, all of whom are friends with Daft Punk. but, there be a reason why Gesaffelstein specifically made an album that parodied the Yeezus album cover. and would later work with many other rappers too.
I freaking love it ever since the day I heard “On Sight” I knew it was a sound that would be mimicked for years to come truly ahead of it’s time especially for it to be on an Hip Hop album very industrial/unorthodox!💿🔥💯
I'm not certain or anything but considering how the usual Daft Punk production stuff goes, I feel like the distortion might have done with a Peavy amp or DOD pedal, judging by the harshness of hi-hat which also sounds like they were bus processed with other components all together. Or the other way around, the luxury units like culture vultures but I still feel like it’s done much dirtier and rougher way.
The distortion is just bitcrushing with some adjustments to make the sound a little more refined. You can create a similar effect to the original with any synth that has a decent amount of low end to it
Aaaa thank you for the video. And makes sense Daft Punk produced this track. In an interview Kanye said they had a synthesizer the size of a wall and that's what was used for the track. And originally it was 15 min. I read this interview years ago so cant remember which publication
On Sight is an incredible instrumental. The lyrics are…well, Kanye…but dang it I revisit this song quite a bit and it’s very underrated in his catalogue.
Its impressive for distortion to be amped up so hard and sound good, its almost like production going electric, the way distortion got to the guitar was that guitarists started pushing the sound over the limit of their amplifiers in various ways, this is basically the same just for rap, turning what would usually sound bad and be avoided into an essential part of the songs sound.
Someone correct me on this, but from what I remember Daft Punk did a massive like sound design session with a huge modular synth setup, and made all these weird cool noises, and that part really stuck out to Ye
There's also some heavy limiting/compression ontop the distortion -- I think it does everything it can to border on noise without going past the expected volume threshold. At least: that's what the original sounds like to me? Not a wall, but a very solid brick. It's how they manage to make the vocals fit. Illusion of loudness.
the way they made the main synth is actually different, its a square wave with automated fm modulation from a sine, if you try making it in serum it will sound exactly the same with barely any effect
it's more likely fm modulation that was used to make the sound, not distortion given the effects at the start of the track. nonetheless you still got it sounding pretty close to the original :D

That’s actually crazy bc Daft Punk co produced this song
Yeah. Honestly, it reminds me more of Gessafelstein (or at least his first album Aleph)…who also co-produced it!
ye was probably like "this weak as fuck" and continued to chain 17 analog distortion modules
it's probably only one bitcrush + bit reduction module
Distortion is a staple in daft punks music tho. All u have to do is listen to Rollin & scratchin or rock'n Roll to know this was their work.
Kanye absolutely didn’t make this beat lol
I believe this is a Mike Dean beat
😭
Makes sense because Daft Punk co produced it!

this video sounds like the audio should be used in a montage from a really underrated tv show
before distortion is pretty sick, gives me the same vibes as the beat from Break Ya Neck. But after distortion is just too badass to not use.
