We were anchored in Prevost Harbor when a distress call came in. The NorWester had run aground and was taking on water. We immediately pulled our anchor and let the USCG and NorWester know we were on our way and would be there in about 5 minutes... Thankfully, nobody was hurt. This is the story of the rescue. Thanks for watching.

As a boater, this is one of the things you wish would not happen.
Glad to see boaters like yourself, Lifeproof boat and Safe boats assisting with rescue.

Boat survived 91 years without GPS, digital engine monitors and go fund my colossal mistake pages. Pitiful example of irresponsibility and virtual lack and disregard for basic seamanship and total disregard for the preservation and care of historically significant vessel, regardless of its past famous owner. Disgusting.

You nailed it. I grew up on that island and the main navigation aid required is common sense.

Thanks for the video. So sad. We were just arriving to Sucia in our new-to-us R-29 when we heard the mayday call and then you respond that you were close by. If you learn of how it happened, would love to hear the story. So glad everyone was OK (at least physically).

Very interesting that the Sheriff or Coast Guard or Tow Boat or the owners didn't try to get some pumps on board and some divers out ASAP to assess the damage and a temp fix like canvas. Roche is a short run for anyone one of those boats and the water was flat. Or they could have towed it to a sandy beach in Prevost or hooked to a buoy or dropped its anchor. Very bizarre that they all just watched it sink for a day then drift all over leaking fuel, gear and engine oil. What is the deal? I thought the Coast Guard stepped up for stuff like this, or the owner/captain would if his ship was going down. Instead they wanted to get their cameras off? Why not save the ship? It sounds like the Keel may be broken which would be the end of her so maybe they knew that?

I just found a link to a video from a diver on Channel Surfings FB page and the keel is separated from the bow and stern. Unfortunately she looks like her back is broken and she is done. I still find it odd they didn't try to pull it to shore or secure it so it wouldn't be bobbing around navigable waters...maybe it was stuck and didn't start floating until the tide was much higher...who knows...there is always more to the story.

The boat was anchored with a bow and stern anchor shortly after it was on the reef. You can see the anchor chain clearly in the underwater video taken by the divers. The insurance co. refused to pull it from the water, and are in dispute with the owners who wanted it pulled from the water. Then scavengers and pirates on Sat May 1, either took/stole, or otherwise removed the anchors and chain. Then high tide came in late Saturday night and she drifted away.

Interesting that they stole the anchors and chain! Sounds like the insurance company is trying to get them to front the salvage then make a claim. We all know what can happen then! What a sad mess.

Just found this video. Haven't watched it yet and not sure I want to. I was her steward for almost 12 years, caring for her as best I could and had a magnificent time doing it. Two owners after me, this happened. So very sad!!

It was definitely a sad day. At the time we responded to the distress call we did not know anything about the boat. Afterwards back at anchor in preview I did some digging to find out more about the boat. It was very sad to see how this boats life ended.

Saw the report. Ran aground on uncharted rock. That reef at Charles point has been charted for over 150 years! Don't have to be an "expert" at not having accidents.

Glad you could document this and raise awareness about it - both to try and get that yacht salvaged, and perhaps even more importantly to highlight the very common unseen rocky reefs throughout the san juan island chain. As an aside, we are dock neighbors! Im just a few slips down from your boat. Hope to see you down at the dock or out on the water sometime soon. Cheers, M/V Makeleah (chb trawler in slip 30)

How does insurance not cover this, one type or another? There is no way the foundation that owns the boat only had one insurance policy or that the policy they had only covered one thing. How on earth could they not be covered for unintentional grounding?

    • @norrispalmer3250
      @norrispalmer3250 3 года назад

Carriers will not cover wooden hulls that old except for lots of cash....You have to have a liability policy for moorage and a "hazardous Materials" policy for removal of fuel oil, antifreeze etc.

We kayaked there Wednesday. In a supreme irony, the plastic lid to a newer model Garmin chart plotter is floating around inside of the containment boom, and they have a newer Garmin radar. I think they have the same model as I do and the reef is clearly marked. Oh well, there but for the grace of God go I, the sea has a way of humbling all of us eventually.

This was a case of negligence total negligence they were more focused on the drone showing in Nora Wester speeding past The island
I had words with the co-owner and all I could get out of her was denial we didn't do anything wrong haven't you ever run a ground? And if you haven't give it a few more years I'm sure you well because everybody does eventually
These are true exact words written to me in a text exchange I had with them this took place on their go fund me page where everybody was saying how sorry they were for them well I am sorry for all of us that lost some part of our history that vessel is important
The insurance company wouldn't cover them because of determining mean it was sheer negligence that sunk that vessel
I carry a lot of empathy in my heart and soul and I can forgive mishaps but I cannot find any forgiveness for these two or however many were involved in the distraction of this most important vessel that we've had in the northwest
My family and I should've bought it when we had the chance when it first came up for sale
I certainly would hate to be the people responsible living my life knowing that I was part of sinking John Wayne's boat in the history that preceded John Wayne

It definitely was operator error. The owners paid dearly for this as they lost their boat.
