Welcome to Lets go channel surfing.
In 2010 we disconnected cable TV as we'd rather be out channel surfing the San Juan Channel, the Swinomish channel, and many others on our boat. Our goals for our videos is to let you experience what boating on our Ranger Tug has to offer and provide ideas for you on your own Ranger Tug.
Our boat is named Channel Surfing, we are Martin and LaZina. We cruise all over the Salish Sea which covers the Pacific Northwest, Canada. We are also planning a trip into Southeast Alaska.
Join us on our adventures as we explore, upgrade our boat, and provide education on boating in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest and Canada.
Please consider subscribing and join us as we cruise around in our Ranger Tug RT27 outboard.

Does this patented prop “idea” Power Tech had just apply to just the R27, or is this something they are going to recommend / offer for other boats?
Wondering, do you have to have the big motor idling for it to steer the kicker with autopilot? Also how slow can you get the boat to troll with the big motor?
I leave the f300 Yamaha in the water, autopilot on, engine off. Autopilot steers the main engine which steers the kicker. I can probably troll as slow as 2-3 knots with the main engine.
Generally speaking, a larger antenna will have more gain than a smaller antenna. A narrower antenna gain lobe, you might say. So I would expect a smaller antenna to cover a larger sky angle, albeit with less gain than a large antenna. This is the opposite of what you are hypothesizing. Thoughts?
@@philterzian9162 all the reviews I’ve read about the mini, mainly from campers and back packers complain that the mini often struggles tracking satellites in the sky due to trees around them and the smaller surface area needed to track the satellites.
@ got it. Thanks.
I am considering buying a 2022 R27. Can I take out the 6 100 amp hour batteries and put in the two 280 amp hour batteries without changing much else? I would like to get that storage space back and wouldn't that change a lot less weight?
It can be done, but it's not going to be drop-in. The (6) 100ah Dakota's in the port lazarette have their T-class fuse and bus bar located and cabled all the way aft in that port locker. When Dakota came out with their 280 (and now their 320ah) battery in a G31 format, they re-cabled the port laz to scoot the two batteries sideways, all the way forward in that port laz. This required that the T-Class fuse and bus bar be moved all the way forward in the port laz. Shoot me an email and I will send you photos of both installations so you can see the difference. Some re-wiring would have to be done else all you'll get is free space in the port laz, all the way forward, which isn't really usable free space.
@ Thanks. Sounds like too much work. I really appreciate all your advice and videos.
Actually, I have found Windy to be very helpful in Johnstone Strait. We know the wind gets accelerated thru Johnstone Strait. Therefore, it is best to look at the peak gusts and use those as a prediction for the nominal wind speed. I have found using the European Model with wind selection set to show peak gusts gives you a pretty good idea of the nominal wind speed in the Strait.
We are looking at the 23 or 25. Probably buying used so a lot will depend on what is available. We would like a fresh water boat. If we bought a salt water one we would probably be looking at higher hour boats with the thought of replacing the 200 with a new 250. An advantage you point out is actually a disadvantage in my opinion. Having the dinette on the opposite side allows for more seating under way
100 hour maintance sounds like that very offen Say 80 hours in a work week Like hell, use the boat for a week Then take it out of the water and work on it ...$$$$$$$$
@@patrickgreen7308 on a car, average annual mileage is 12,000 miles an year. On boat in the Pacific Northwest, 100hours a year is average. Most folks do the 100 hours service annually.
More expensive then i would have thought, but sounds like the adventure of a lifetime
Yup. I went during the year with the highest average cost per gallon of gas ($5.90/gal averaged). And I also went with the least fuel efficient prop (1.3mpg on the OFS 4 blade). Our next trip, gas will be cheaper (hopefully), and the new SCE5 prop I'm running is 1.6mpg. Should nearly cut my fuel bill in half. (fingers crossed).
Struggling with the information about lithium state of charge for getting the most "mileage" out of your batteries. As you know, I have a factory LE boat with 560a/h lithium house bank. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? Feel free to reach out directly, but I thought this might be a good question for the audience. ;-)
Are you talking about longevity? Or just normal operation?
@ is it bad for the lithium’s to stay on charge? Does that damage the life cycle of them? If that’s the case, I was just wondering if you had any tips on how I can avoid that with the factory setup.
This is inspiring and educational. My dream is to get a (much more affordable) cabin cruiser. But I need “fixer” training. So while I save, I’m watching your videos and others. So thank you!
Glad you are enjoying the videos and learning how to tackle boat repairs. Once the boat show is over (It's all next week), I'll start on the repairs and we'll film what it takes to fix what's broke.
Here's one comment: Lots of dedication to producing videos is apparent. The weather looked (and sounded) obnoxious. So thank you. Question: Do any of your pumps also trigger an alarm (bell, whistle, whatever)? I'm told the 1 of my 3 Cutwater bilge pumps - the one with a auto/manual panel switch - should alarm but it doesn't. So did I lose the alarm...or get bad gouge?
Much appreciated! None of our bilge pumps triggers an alarm. In fact, being a 2021 model, the boat didn't even come with a high water bilge alarm. The 2022 and newer models do. So I'm using Sensar Marine for my high water bilge alarm. (see our Boat Monitoring video, if you haven't already watched it). ruclips.net/video/stUELIV4s98/видео.html
@@Letsgochannelsurfing Thanks for the link, Martin. Since my Cutwater is a 2022 model, it may have a (non-functioning) alarm. I'll check out your choice - and much appreciated.
What, raining in Seattle? And best way to not brake the boat? Put it in a marina, don't use it. :D Actually, flooded bilge and non working pumps are right up your alley. :D Good video.
It'll stop raining around May/June timeframe. Lol. Thanks for the feedback!
Could you lubricate the tilt indicator with WD? Maybe the problem is growth. Have you considered ultrasonics?
There's no growth as this is well above the water line. It's just sticky. I tried lubrication, no luck. It's electrical, so I don't think ultrasonic cleaning would resolve it.
@@Letsgochannelsurfing I checked some forums. One person found a loose wire near the harness. Have you tried WD-40 Silicone? Not the oil version?
Hi Guys, I love your channel, because I see a RT 27 in my future…BUT, can you increase the audio volume on your videos? I can barely hear you with my phone volume maxxed out. Thank you!
@@allansmits9621 we got new mic’s which helped out a lot. This was one of the last videos we recorded before the new mic’s arrived.
Good informational video. I will be looking forward to the video when you replace the bilge pumps and fix that leak. Take care.
Thanks for watching! It's coming! Make sure you're subscribed and click that notification bell. Once it warms up a bit I'll start filming the repairs before boating season officially starts.
You mentioned a while back that you carry a bunch of replacement parts. Did you have new pumps from day one as spares? Also have you run into a model that is no longer made? On a side note, you said you were hitting ice burgs. To you have some sort of metal cover on the bow of the boat? Thanks for the info.
For our SE Alaska trip, we carried some spares. I don't carry spare bilge pumps on board as the cockpit has 2 in there, which offer redundancy. Also, usually when the automatic feature fails, the bilge pumps still work with manual operation. Here's an illustration of what I mean by hitting icebergs. Our Glacier Bay video, start at timestamp 1:48. ruclips.net/video/8EiloKCnnqs/видео.html
Here's another example of the icefields. This was in Tracy Arm, up by Sawyer Glacier. Start at 13:21 timestamp. ruclips.net/video/Upii5jZdbH8/видео.html
All the bilge pumps on the boat are still made today. That makes replacing them easy.

I'm scared...how many hrs on your 2021 R27? Is it years or hours that deteriorate the pumps. I just purchased a 2021 R27 NW with only 78 hrs on it. Concerns are as above...hours or years? Thanks for the insightful video(s)!
Channel Surfing is a 2021 NW Edition R27-OB. She was the second boat built for the model year 2021. As a result, we took delivery of her June, 2020. She's 4.5 years old. 895 engine hours on the F300. 25 engine hours on the T9.9 kicker. 11,985 statue miles traveled. When we took delivery, she had 2 engine hours. Channel Surfing's 3rd birthday was spent anchored in Blue Mouse Cove, Glacier Bay, Alaska. 27nm south of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay (1,300 miles from home). I don't care about engine hours. Do the maintenance on time, and it's unlikely that I can boat enough to wear out the Yamaha engines. Saltwater is unforgiving. It's a hostile environment. Corrosive, vibrations, weather, seasonality of usage... it all adds up. Things break, fix 'em, and go enjoy being out on the water. It's an addiction. :)
On the front low level bilge pump you can set it to go with a timer or at water level. I didn’t realize this for over a year and couldn’t stand the timer checking it every 5 minutes. When I realized it was just a simple setting on the pump I was disappointed I didn’t check on that before. As for bilge pumps failing when not used regularly Martin is spot on when they are not used and or ran regularly they tend to fail much sooner than pumps that are ran on a regular basis. I found that running the two front pumps that are not used much using simple green keeps the build up of mold/ moss from clogging up the float and the small impellers inside the pump. If they are kept clean and tested on a regular basis they will last a lot longer. Also the test button gets build up in them as well and stops the test button from working over time. Simple green keep them working for longer and its environment friendly.
@ Good suggestion. I will add this(pulling pumps and exercising them in a bucket of simple green) to my annual maintenance.
What I typically do is pour simple green onto the plumps while they are running 2-3 times during the summer and then when I winterize. It kills all the moss and mold and you don’t have to remove them.
Man those rule pumps are weak. I’ve had to replace 2 already. Not a fan.
I've gotten decent life out of them. I'm more worried about the aft bilge pump that's 4.5 years old, still runs great, as it's the most used bilge pump on the boat. Thanks for watching!
Good info.... thx for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Martin what would you propose in the way of a small cellular booster for my explorer RIB on the Great Lakes? Just trying to improve connectivity primarily while out far from shore. Are their any good combo VHF / AIS / cellular antennas for example? Thanks in advance 👊

Handy tip: Buying Victron from Amazon runs the risk of it not even being Victron....Amazon is allowing more and more fake products shipped in from overseas...You get what you pay for. Another mistake we see is folks using residential grade Romex wire to connect boat AC circuits...as in solid copper wire - which is going to corrode and break. Yep - On a boat, always used marine grade, stranded timned copper wire, and use proper crimp connectors, proper crimp tools and dielectric grease on threaded lugs where appropriate.
Excellent advice! Thanks for commenting and watching!
Thanks Martin for expediting this video. I have the OFS4 on order for my R23. Do you happen to know the socket size for the Yamaha 200FX?

thanks for sharing. It's interesting that programing AIS by the end user is a limitation only for US. like I've been doing that myself for my AIS600 and AIS800 using the USB cable that came with the unit and free software that is available for download. so I was confused hearing that it's not doable, but now checked the AIS800 software documentation and it indeed says: "... Before installing the Garmin® AIS 800 Blackbox Transceiver, the MMSI must be programmed into the AIS for it to be seen and receive information. While there are generally no restrictions for end-users outside of the US, AIS programming within the US is restricted only to Authorized Dealers/Installers. " I cannot change the MMSI once I have programmed it, if needs to be changed, then I would also then need to approach authorized dealer. but I could change other vessel parameters that you can enter via the programing tool (lenght, beam, offset of the AIS antenna, ..).
Here in the US, we can't even download the software from Garmin for their Garmin 800. They only make it accessible to authorized Garmin dealers. For my Vesper 8000, I was able to, but that was before Garmin acquired Vesper.
I don't know if it's just on my end but I cannot hear you guys talking

R there fenders that DO NOT create Fender Ash??
Not that I am aware of.
I’m more convinced now to get an inflatable with an outboard and save myself the headache managing all these expenses and some $$ 😂
I’m sure you'll have a great time with that setup! It works for us. Boats are all about compromise, unfortunately.
I just installed the BT version 3.0. I’m having trouble, the app works flawlessly but the physical turn knob jumps the temp/menu selection all over the place. We have 2 EVO 55s on board and I upgraded both harnesses and controllers at the same time, both controllers have this problem. Anyone else experiencing this? The heaters run like they’re supposed to and I have no codes. Its just the physical controls. As a side note, running the app, the Bluetooth chip gives off enough heat to affect the temperature sensor in the housing. This is noted in the manual but it seems like a bad design. My laser temp gun is showing that the upper button gets to 76-80 degrees. So running the app is a temporary issue because it will give false temperature readings at the controller until it cools down after disconnecting. Having a fan blow across the controller will give you accurate readings if you’re trying to run diagnostics. For the price, I think they cheaped out on the board components. I mean, a Nest thermostat is $170, I’d use that if it was possible. $300+ and it’s still kinda old tech. Kinda nice but old and a bit flimsy.
I've not experienced that with excessive temp on the controller. But ours is on the Airtop STC 2000, which is a much smaller heater than the EVO55.
Great content, as usual. Thanks! (makes a note to switch props)

any concerns gas vs diesel from a safety perspective ? I know many people also don't like to rely on a single engine for passages, example Fl to Bahamas etc. So we have been looking for the smallest twin cruiser we can find . any thoughts ?
I have no concerns with gas as these are outboards. There are no exposed gas fumes inside the boat, no blower to run. The outboards are also fuel injected. So no fumes outside the boat either. The smallest twin cruiser I'd recommend would be the Cutwater 288. Twin F250's. ruclips.net/video/7Ih0j0rm0rI/видео.html

IN AUSTRALIA I PRESUME THAT IS WHY WE PAY MORE FOR DIESEL. MORE ENERGY RELEASE. WE GET NOTHING FOR FREE.

Just a head's up - some posh marinas in BC require $3mil liability - otherwise you can't get even a guest slip. Might look at an umbrella liability policy on your home - IF that's accepted at the marina. Als0 - bottom paint can cost less if you DIY...depends on where you're doing the work though. Everything is "flexible" for every situation. Thanks for taking the time to make a summary video!
I saw that last year when we went to th3e Gulf islands. Call the marinas. They treat US boaters different. Again call the marinas. Good info for those that do not know. I have 1 mill and they are ok with that but I am US
Good advice! I'll definitely look into that.
