I had the rewatch the whole Kairi's heart cutscene like fifteen times since it was unskippable in the original game, and I kept losing this fight.
Ok this is just my take on this fight.... IT IS FUCKING AWESOME!!! Ok granted it is the most hardest boss fight that everyone hates but at the same time it is the most intense fight in the game that test your senses of how well you know how to play the game not to mention the fact it gets you ready for Roxas since he is 10x harder than Riku in this game. I mean we can all agree we all enjoy a one on one climactic battle between them even though most of the time Sora was gay for Riku the whole time but still awesome boss fight a little frustrating but i would literally play the whole game again to fight him in this form again

C. Jump My brother beat this fight in his second try. He just got lucky, I guess. He also didn't have too much trouble with Giant Ursula it Dragon Maleficent.

You know the Phantom, Sephiroth and Unknown Figure is much more difficult than Riku. Perhaps you're underlevel
People who never played the original have it easy unlike tons of us before. Before 1.5, cutscenes were unskippable and this was hell in the original haha

well, it'd help out if people actually used the wind spells like i do...
they reduce the damage you take and even start reflecting things at -Ra level...
the ONLY fights you shouldn't use that on is Ice Titan (makes you unable to deflect his attacks for damage) and Phantom (normal hits do more damage when hitting his white heart)
i always use aero but i still loose multiple time almost every boss
Eric Lecarde you never knew the difficulty we had by playing on original version. You can’t dash, your finishing combo attack isn’t wide, and there’s no reaction command (the green triangle button command above the attack magic items summon command). Triggering ars arcanum and other chain attacks without reaction command is so frustrating.

it took me a while to figure it out but i get it...funny thing is that in my 2nd playthrough on proud mode i rekt his ass without even stepping into the red zone but got demolished in my first playthrough in normal mode...as a matter of fact my 2nd playthrough was so much easier than my first...bugged game maybe
Val Saludo Your skills at the game just improved.
People who have played the final mix are very lucky to have leaf bracer and the ability to skip cutscenes, making Riku-Ansem a pushover. The ps2 version had none of those final mix additions, making the fight a horrific nightmare.

Let me tell you something...
Horrific nightmare isn't even the word. This fight TRIGGERS me. The music TRIGGERS me. Seeing him in 3 TRIGGERED me. I first attempted this fight 15 years ago...yes attempted, cause I lost 26 times in a row. I had to watch that cutscene TWENTY SIX TIMES IN A ROW. It made it worse that I had him down to one last combo, but I was trying to heal, and he snuck me at that moment. I gave THE FUCK up. I hadn't had any real problems of having to redo fights until this one. It's like the game just TURNED THE DIAL TO 100, and said SCREW YOU. I let someone else do the it for me, cause I was done, then finished the rest of the game myself, and even Ansem- THE FINAL BOSS- wasn't on par with this fight; I beat that first try. Skip ahead 2 years, I started another playthrough of KH1 after KH2 came out in 2006 for nostalgic reasons, but I completely forgot about this fight. I tried it once, I stopped playing. It wasn't until 2012 I finally beat this damn fight. YES, I LEFT THE FILE SITTING THERE ON MY MEMORY CARD AT THIS FIGHT FOR 6 YEARS. That was the best feeling in the world to beat this piece of shit, but I can't say that I'm not a grown ass woman scarred by the sights of Riku-Ansem.

There are two lines I can vividly remember from playing the original KH
"Ee ooh, ooh ooh ah. Not Clayton!"
And "So, I shall release you now, Princess. Complete the Keyhole with your power. Open the door, lead me into everlasting darkness!"
For me it was also "Darkness. THE TRUE DARKNESS!!" aka Dragon Maleficent
When I was a 10 year old playing this, I never realized the similarities between this fight and the fights with Riku on destiny island at the very beginning of the game (riku's taunts, riku blocking with his keyblade the same way he does with the stick, even the layout of the stage matches the island fight). Pretty cool to see now as a 27 year old, although it's obvious to anyone who was older than 10 when they first played the game.
They did a fucking masterful job of preparing you for boss fights like that. Whenever I get frustrated on a boss fight I always think back to Destiny Island and my grind to beat to Riku/Tidus and the others.
All they did was up the difficulty, give Riku new attacks, and you have new abilities. Imagine of a glitch happened where once you beat him Sora would do the victory pose and say: "Oh yeah! Now the score is 1-0!"

No, I did too. Fucking hated this boss fight for that exact reason.
We Original KH gamers know thy not pain but really an annoyance. I for one even stopped playing this one time for a LONG TIME before returning to it and finally beat An-Ku’s arse.

This was the fight that taught me that changing equipment and equiping skills were EVERYTHING in a boss fight.
And there's also a lesson to learn is that sometimes you mustn't let your guard down.
Gotta love how Sora takes his sweet time commiting suicide while Donald and Goofy do nothing but just stand there until he finally dies

Among my friends in elementary school, this boss was legendary for being really friggin' hard, yet I beat him on the first or second try. I did end up using nearly all my healing items/spells, though.

Best option: Before you fight Maleficent and Ansem-Riku, grind, buy a supply of elixirs, use the right keyblade and equipment needed, after defeating the Maleficent Dragon and face Riku after the unskippable cutscene, reflect the dark ball of darkness by blocking(which is optional)time the blocks, then counterattack, hug the invisible wall by jumping then gliding as he tries to kill you, use all your guts and honor against him(finishers, magic, attacks, use of elixirs, finishers last if you want that SSSmokin' Sexy Style!)rinse and repeat.
On the subject of Maleficent, when she's in her dragon form, glide around the fire, go onto the platform and fight her, have aero magic prior to the fight, an alternate choice is to use the power of Za Warudo against that witch(spam stop, then gravity twice, rinse repeat until Dragon Maleficent's health is extremely low and beat her to death and boss battle over), then you've cheesed a difficult opponent until it becomes a literal nightmare once you start fighting your childhood friend possessed by a demonic entity and the ruler of his harbingers of Darkness with him saying *OKAY I BELIEVE YOU* in the process. Now his body was given to Pre-KH2 Billy Zane before you commit seppuku just to save your other childhood friend and the Disney Princesses, then turning into a Heartless afterwards.
As soon as the battle starts and the music starts to play I have flashbacks of Ansem saying "Welcome Oblivion!" And "Behold the Power of Darkness"
A moment of silence for those who played the original and had to go through all the cutscenes 😑

You come back to this scene and see Sora flashing the biggest grin on his face before stabbing himself with the Keyblade Riku/Ansem was using.
And then remember much earlier how Donald and Goofy were telling Sora when they met that their journey, much like the Gummi Ship, would only run on no frowning or sad faces, only funny faces.

When this originally came out in 2002, I must've watched this cutscene and tried this battle 60+ times over the course of weeks before I finally beat it as a 9-year-old. Hardest part of the game by far. I had never felt as accomplished by beating something in a video game before or since.
The thing I love the most about KH1 is the technical experience u get for blocking and stopping moves

I hate this boss fight beyond words. I just beat Maleficents dragon form (without using Tinkerbell, I know, I'm crazy). Then this bastard shows up. He can attack *THROUGH* your combos and he's practically impossible to land attacks on without good reach (Pumpkinhead is a good choice when you don't have the Hercules key). When he has one health bar left, he's permanently in his energy hand mode where it becomes minor mind games and you have next to no time to react because he basically the Flash on steroids now. You can't even touch him before he zooms around the arena. Worst of all is not even Riku himself, but the camera. The damn thing will just have a seizure when your locked onto him, where you want to move one way, then the camera says "lol, nope!" and change angles, making you go in a completely different direction, sometimes into Riku! It didn't help I was playing on proud mode where he could kill you in just 3-4 hits if you don't use aero, but then you have less chances to heal if you do. It took me 5 hours in total to beat him, including when I forgot to save and the game crashed after beating him once so I had to do it again. Long story short, I was pissed. All I can say is THANK GOD I was playing 1.5 ReMix on my PS4 instead of the PS2 original where you couldn't skip cutscenes (if I had to watch the 2+ minute cutscene each time, I probably would've screamed by the 5th attempt.)

It's hard but not impossible this is not a cheap boss the key is to be adapatable. Don't be overly agressive but don't play too defensively either, having the right keyblade helps too. I make absolutely sure I have the olyimpa keyblade both because it's powerful, and because it's long reach means your much less likely to whiff an attack since that will get your ass beat fast.
Ah...the first time we are introduced to one of the best and most feared ultimate moves in the games....Dark Aura.

@@theerealatm Yeah that must be why I see so many playhrough's have their assess getting kicked by Roxas and needing those asses saved by Mickey for Xaldin. And yes I've seen very experienced players have a very hard time against him.

How ironic that you learned counterattack after this battle. Riku’s displayed this ability from his very first battle with Sora. He even uses it in this battle. Fitting that you learned it after your last fight with him in this game. Almost like a gift from the sliver of good still left in him at this point.
Y’know what I just realized?
It really wasn’t explained what the whole ‘Keyblade of Heart’ thing was about. Never mentioned again, and only kinda replicated by the fact Xehanort had a keyblade that functioned similarly to it.
Why the heck did Riku/Ansem get that particular key and nobody else?
Because this game series changes rules for plot convinience

It was made from the hearts of the princesses. It got destroyed and the hearts were freed after Sora stabbed himself. Also Ansem probably got it because he was the one who completed the keyhole.
I just assumed it transformed into Riku's way to dawn Keyblade
Xehanort knows how to channel darkness, but can also suppress light if necessary. He used Riku's ability to wield a light Keyblade and Ansem heartless nature to craft that Keyblade. It unlocks Hearts by being made of Princesses' Hearts. A Inversion of the Princesses' power, if you will.
They explained it in the secret reports
To summarize the Keyblade of Heart is a third type of Keyblade
In reality they’re three families or types of Keyblades
The Keyblade of Light, is virtually every Keyblade we seen, they’re Keyblades forged from the Hearts of People in the Realm of Light
The Keyblade of Darkness or Keyblade D are the Keyblade made parallel to the Light Keyblade’s. Meaning Mickey’s Kingdom Key D. Is actually a dark inverted copy of Sora‘s Keyblade. Despite where it came from. It’s not a dark Keyblade, it’s simply a Keyblade made in reflection in the Realm of Darkness. In theory every Keyblade has a D counterpart in the Realm of Darkness
Both a L and a D Keyblade are needed to seal the Door to Darkness. Which was why King Mickey disappeared at the start of the game, and sent Donald and Goofy to find Sora. He knew both Keyblades are needed to restore the worlds
Anyway as for the Keyblade of Heart, it’s created from Seven Hearts of Pure Light. Together it brings forth the power to summon the Final Keyhole as an alternate method to reach Kingdom Hearts without a x-blade
In theory a Keyblade of Heart is a pseudo-x-blade, made from half the ingredients to create a complete x-blade
With its power to unlock Hearts. One can gather more Hearts in order to complete it
In theory Ansem created the Keyblade of Heart after he waited for Maleficent to gather most of the Princesses together
As a Heartless, he can steal hearts, so he snatched them from each of the Princesses and gathered them together, to create the Keyblade of Heart
Because he’s possessing Riku, a prospective Keyblade Wielder, Ansem can wield it
But the one we seen is incomplete, as it needed all 7 to be completed.
So all it needed was Kairi to be complete
The reason why it was destroyed, was because Ansem wasn’t controlling the Keyblade. He allowed Sora to take the Keyblade and sacrifice himself, when he realized he can’t beat him easily in a fight.
Without Ansem controlling it. The rebelling Princesses, within the Keyblade broke free and returned to their bodies.
But doing so also released their power which completed the Final Keyhole. Which worked for Ansem just as well
Seems this might have been an original plan for Ansem, to absorb all Princesses within the Keyblade of Heart, to make the 7 Lights needed to complete the x-blade. Then as Xemnas gained his 13 Darknesses in the original Organization XIII, they’ll join with the a Keyblade of Heart and create a complete x-blade
But that’s one of many plans that didn’t work out, which was ok for Ansem as he believed by opening the Door to Darkness, he can control Kingdom Hearts which failed in the end
Billy zane as Ansem the wise gave me utter goosebumps he’s an incredible actor! Especially in this era of kingdom hearts
Ansem the wise is Diz who was voiced by Corey Burton after Christopher Lee, this Ansem is the seeker of darkness.
I just beat him today and beating him was a pain in my ass, he moved sooooo bloody fast
But it feels awesome when you dodge roll him successfully

@@LordMalice6d9 Not for me, though that might be because I only played standard in Kingdom Hearts 1 and I played Critical for Kingdom Hearts 3 and because only played the Final Mix version so I could skip the cutscene (not sure why I need to though, that cutscene is awesome as far as I'm concerned), but I still think Kingdom Hearts 3 Remind Dark Riku Data Fight is a bit more brutal, mainly because the guy will scream "ONE MORE!" before hitting me with a million more attacks, freaking liar.
"Open your heart to darkness". That was always my favorite villain line! It then and now has swagger!
This was one of my favorite fights in this game. This fight was so much fun.
riku's voice really stands out, but this isn't like toei does the dual voice thing for fusions in their dragon ball dubs. riku's voice is just higher whereas ansem's is lower.
This scene and fight is so damn strong and meaningful it’s literary a reflection of when sora and riku would fight with toy swords on the island

Mostly because it took like at least 2 years to defeat Riki and then sora just goes and kills himself anyway 😓. But, seeing all the princesses wake up made it all worth it!

RaiKai18 unfortunately. We didn’t realize that you NEEDED the Olympus key to defeat him. We were trying to defeat him with every other key until we finally figured it out.

I remember playing this when I was about 10 years old and for the life of me I couldn't beat it no matter how hard I tried. But up until this point in the game, I was using only the Kingdom Key (the first one you get in the game). I was so stubborn about using the one that meant I was the "chosen one" that I never wanted to switch. I also thought they were just skins and didn't improve the performance. After reading my guidebook, I learned otherwise. As soon as I changed keyblades I instantly beat this. So nostalgic.

20 years ago I first played this game and got stuck here. I eventually sold the game because of it. As an adult, I somehow found an original PS2 copy. I got to this point again, and somehow managed to beat him on my second run

Greatest boss fight ever. I never could beat it unless i equipped the Metal Chobocco, which makes no sense, because you should want more MP for this. The reach was what did it for me.

Sora: Whoever you are, let Riku go! Give him back his heart!
Ansem: But first, you must give the princess back her heart!
(Sora grunts)
Donald: Sora!
Sora: What's?!
Ansem: Don't you see yet? The princess' heart is responding. It has been there all along, Kairi's heart rests within you!

Ansem: I know all that there is to know.
Sora: Tell me. Who are you?
Ansem: It is I Ansem, the seeker of darkness.
(Donald runs toward Ansem)

Playing this the vanilla version is so much awarding after watching that cutscene 23 times in a row from 12AM to 2AM. So yeah.

My god, I remember this fight being so damn tough in the original. Of course it didn't help that I was underleveled. But damn, I failed this fight 20+ times, enough to have every line in the cutscene memorized word-for-word. I've forgotten a little bit of it, but I still remember most of it.

Udon It's funny because it took me 20 minutes per try until I decided (for the first time) to use a different Keyblade (which was the Olympia) and then I beat him in 5 minutes first try.

This game was difficult, but this world, more specifically this boss fight was in a way, a wake up call to players, telling them the game is going to become a lot more difficult now
I never noticed that before sora vanishes, he has a smile when he sees kairi's heart go back to her.
Hands down out of all boss fight in the first kingdom hearts game this had to be the hardest one
