I'm not too familiar with a lot of Soulsborne lore content creators' work, so I thought it would be a cool idea to "react" to what other content creators have produced and give my thoughts and opinions on their videos. I also thought it would be a good idea to stream my reactions, answer questions, and get chat's input on the videos as well. These streams are archived on the "Live" section of my channel, but for videos like this one, I've edited things down to be a little more easily digestible (and a higher quality than what I can stream.)
Throughout this stream, I often reference the Japanese text and compare it to the English translation of Bloodborne using my Bloodborne Retranslation Project spreadsheets which are available here:

My interpretation of Bloodborne's lore is quite different from most, so I was interested about what Smough had to say about the Choir and the Eldritch Truth, even if we disagree.

Not finished yet but this is great stuff so far! Idk if anyone in the chat mentioned this but starflowers (@ ~2h11m) are real, a common name for a number of different kinds of flowers, including ornithogalum species that the white flowers in the Hunter's Dream appear to be based on (at least some of them, can't remember if there's multiple kinds off the top of my head). The lumenflowers would have to be asteraceae like the sunflower, which along with the much larger clade of asterids is named after stars. e: coldblood flowers are asters too
As an aside, asters are among the most varied and numerous flowers in Elden Ring , probably second place after the various lilies, for what I reckon are somewhat similar purposes (most of them are unidentified non-items unfortunately).
I like the connection between the choir's high rank in the church and singing to old/great ones.
I was thinking about the orphanage - sure, the children may have been literal orphans who were collected by the church as no one would be checking that they were being treated normally, but there's a connection to the great ones. every great one loses its child and yearns for a surrogate; the church, meanwhile, is looking to ascend to higher status by being "adopted" by a great one. the church upper members style themselves as orphanage to attract bereaved parents, and seeks to shape itself into the perfect adoption candidates.
hearing how different the source text is from the translated version is giving me traumatic flashbacks as a fan of Jujutsu Kaisen's tragic fate in the hands of its official translators...

I wish if you could maybe review that dude that suggested the Bloodborne Medical Metaphor theory... i think the dude got it all figured.

50:12 so japanese gamers have literal description of items so it is easier for them do underdstand the lore? and we western audience must relay on descriptions that sounds good to hear instead of making more sense?
more like, the Japanese have a COHESIVE set of translations, as they were all the product of a single team that knew what was going on. the English translations are a product of a bunch of separate people, none of whom have the full picture, trying to guess at the true meaning of individual, ambiguous pieces of text, and then translating them into a comprehensible sentence in a language that shares very little, grammatically/culturally/poetically/conceptually. it's not like the sentences are simple in Japanese. if the sentences were translated literally into English without someone explaining them to you, you'd understand even less than what you understand from the current translations.
I really want to like Smoughtown. And its not like I dislike his content. I just cant help but get annoyed when he starts suggesting ideas as if they are a matter of fact. I always end up clicking off.
Hey sorry to hear that - of course it goes without saying that it is simply my interpretation! I certainly don't claim to be right on everything, in many cases my Elden Ring videos include corrections or areas where I believe I was wrong in the past.
It's just it gets annoying for the audience if I need to say 'in my opinion' every sentence, I think this is clearly implicit within any and every lore video.
And on the flip side, no one will enjoy a 'Lore Video' if it isn't delivered confidently and with a somewhat authoritative tone.
A balance between entertainment and information - I hope that makes sense.
No one's lore video is fact.
@@SmoughTown I think there are plenty of ways to do it apart from just saying "in my opinion." But thats just me.
