Bloodborne Lore - The Vilebloods of Cainhurst (Queen Yharnam's blood)

  • This is my take on the story behind the enigmatic Vilebloods who reside at Cainhurst. Quite often this group is simply categorised as the bad guy vampire archetype. However a lot of what what we learn of this group is from Alfred, who is a member of a the Executioners who is dedicated to the eradication of all vilebloods.
    However if we look past his bias and examine the history of the Queen Yharnam, we can see certain parallels and learn more about both the Vilebloods and Yharnam herself.
    In this video I will explain how I believe that the rogue scholar who founded the vilebloods took back the forbidden blood of Yharnam and this is the 'vileblood' which runs through their veins. I will also discuss the culture and organisation of this unique group.
    Please feel free to like and comment. Please subscribe for more content and thanks for watching!

    I’m pretty sure the only reason the blood is referred to as vile is because it’s not from the healing church and the church is pissed so they claim it’s vile

      whats funny is that it originally came from the healing church's predecessors, Byrgenworth University, some guy just went to Cainhurst and gave it to them, and it seems their Pthumerian genes make them react differently to it then normal humans.

    A great analysis of Cainhurst and the Vilebloods!
    Something I would like to add is my theory that Formless Oedon is the Great One "married" to Annalise, just like he was "married" to Yharnam in Phtumerian times.
    Here is what makes me believe this:
    Formless Oedon is said to be formless, existing only in voice, and that blood is its essence. Blood, human or not, is the essence of the formless Great One, and both Yharnam and Annalise are strictly connected with Blood (Yharnam basically uses blood magic to fight, a blood that inflicts rapid poison just like the Vileblood Chikage does; Annalise instead is trying to conceive the Child of Blood, child of Oedon, by obtaining Blood Dregs, who look like spermatozoa in the sprite, she is quite literally being impregnated by the essence of Oedon).
    Furthermore Oedon is explicitly connected to the Corrupted Blood that runs in the veins of Yharnam and Annalise, in the description of the Umbilical Cord retrieved from Arianna (who as you noted in the video is connected to the lineage of Cainhurst) it is said that "Every Great One loses its child, and then yearns for a surrogate, and *Oedon*, the formless Great One, is no different. To think, *it was corrupted blood that began this eldritch liaison*."
    I then interpret this as saying that what happened to Arianna is the result of a liaison, a sacred Pthumerian marriage, that Oedon started many ages ago with Yharnam (resulting in Mergo, a Child of Blood) and now goes on in the lineage of Annalise who probably obtained Yharnam's blood thanks to the traitorous scholar of Byrgenwerth.
    This could mean that the "inadvertent worshipers" of Oeon who "surreptitiously seek the precious blood" are a reference to the Vilebloods who serve Oedon without really knowing it, they think they're serving their queen.
    At last the connection with Oedon would explain the weird thing going on in Cainhurst, the doors opening on their own, the ghost carriage that leads us to the castle (the carriage is a ghost, try hitting the horses and the whole thing will disappear with the sound effect one hears when hitting a ghost) and also the Crown of Illusions, the Crown of the King of Cainhurst who allows those who wear it to see through illusions.
    And it makes sense, because if Oedon is married to Annalise then he is the King of Cainhurst, it would then makes sense that by donning a relic tied to the Formless Great One one becomes able to see through illusions.
    I'd like to know what you think of this.

    His reverence for logarious to me shows an obsession of someone he never met
    Also he seems to talk about them as if it was all past history (which it is) rather than as an "i was there" war story

    Vilebloods are probably my favorite faction to sort of roleplay in the game, for both my skill/blt and str/blt characters. Not only do you get extra insight for winning invasions in blood dregs, but I notice(less often now but often when the game was more populated with green players) that I have a good chance of getting summoned late game as an adversary because hosts would use the Executioner Rune since it claims to boost amount healed by vials. But the increase isn't significant. Easy noob trap. But the aesthetic of the whole place is great.

    I believe that the scholar who betrayed Byrgenwerth partook of this blood with Annalise, and together, they gave rise to the Vilebloods. Yet, the King of Cainhurst seems to have been slain, while Annalise remains immortal... The kin coldblood which we can find within the Vileblood corpses may hint at what the forbidden blood truly was.

  • @ooccttoo

    Great vid! I came here from your more recent Elden Ring videos, I was glad to see you'd also done some Bloodborne lore analysis.
    Something I've not seen many people mention about Ariana is the possible reason that she is capable of concieving a child of blood when Annalise seems (so far) to be unable to. Barring some personal issue like infertility, it's worth noting that the blood dreg's icon art appears to depict small, wriggling sperm cells in the blood. This could just be a visual metaphor for how the blood dregs will help Annalise concieve a child of blood, but we also have to remember that Ariana is a sex worker. While Annalise relied on her knights to bring her blood dregs, Ariana (presumably) has had a steady stream of clients (most of whom were probably men, if her dialogue is anything to go by) for most of her adult life (assuming that she's been doing sex work for a number of years). All this is to say that she might have surpassed Annalise's suitability for the position of mother to a Great One's child by her repeated intimate contact with hunters (echo fiends) who were her clients - perhaps laying with a hunter is far more efficient than imbibing a blood dreg. This almost definitiely wasn't Ariana's intention, but the way I see it I think it must be the reason why things play out the way they do.

    When I arrived at cainhurst I noticed the long dead, frozen corpses of two horses, along with a coach that also was covered in ice.
    I also noticed that the bridge leading from what I assume is the mainland, to the castle is ruined and seemingly impossible to cross.
    This creeped me right out, it raises the question of how did we arrive at the castle?
    was our carriage a phantasm or illusion cast by the queen, or is the monolith at Hemwick crossroads some sort of artefact that teleports anyone with the right summons straight to the castle, and the coach and horses are just in our hunters head?
    Be very interested to hear what you think of this.

    • @SmoughTown
      @SmoughTown  8 лет назад +26

      I had considered the same: is the carriage an illusion? What I believe to be the case is very speculative and is what I have taken to be the case - so feel free to disagree. When we resurrect the queen, we don't so much remake her; it has something to do with time being reversed. There is something about Cainhurst as it stands now, it feels isolated but it is more than physicality - it's is like it is in its own pocket of space and time. Likewise who wrote you the invitation? Considering there is no one left at the castle who is sane - minus the queen. It could have been written in the past? My thoughts are this - when you receive the invitation you are able to travel to Cainhurst in a cart and over a bridge that no longer exist but which did in the past. I know this is extremely meta but I have always thought that is the carriage we travel in - but it has long since frozen over. I believe we were able to travel through a pocket of the past - whether that is the queen's will...?

    • @JohnJohn-qq1cw
      @JohnJohn-qq1cw 8 лет назад +7

      ***** That actually makes more sense than the teleportation, now I think about it, because during the cut scene we see the hunter get into the coach from someone else's perspective.....I like the idea of the castle being out of time somehow, and the summons description backs this up.
      Any thoughts on who is watching, and how the witch of Hemwick is connected to cainhurst, if at all?

    • @SmoughTown
      @SmoughTown  8 лет назад +10

      +John John definitely: that's the feeling I get of Cainhurst that it's a lost location. In regards to your other questions - I have less concrete ideas. As for who is watching us, I would hazard a guess that it is one of the Queen's people. As for Hemwick - I will have to have a think and get back to you. The witches are obsessed with harvesting eyes, eyes to be used in a ritual that will no doubt bring them into closer contact with the Gods. The aims of Cainhurst are quite different, so it's more tricky to assign any relation between the two except for spatially.

    I hate that vilebloods are looked at and treated as villains. The church is the villain. The church and its followers caused most if not all of the issues that take place in yharnam. Sure Vilebloods may not be entirely innocent but the church only took them out because they couldn't handle anyone else giving blood ministration. I hate the church. I care about the people who are suffering but i hate the church for causing it. Thus I'm a vileblood. 100% loyal to Queen Annalise.

      yep and the vilebloods aren’t even that evil, the blooddregs can be obtained by killing hunters but NOT innocent people. if you kill friendly civilians npc you will not obtains it. it’s clearly said that they were slaughtered because they had forbidden blood and the church was not okay with that.
      the executioners are fucked up, they litteraly killed everyone, only annalise remains, so they even killed the children…and we know that the church is fucked up in general (look at the upper cathedral ward and the choir experiments). even if i think most of the atrocities happened way after laurence and ludwig death (except the fishing hamlet but that was byrgenwerth and not even the church), but that’s another subject.
      i still don’t understand how some people in this fandom still defend the church and the executioners that bad.

    I believe when Gehrman contacted the moon presence, it was at the fracturing of the hunters and the church.. he had a simple vision where he led his personally trained students to quickly secure peace.. the hunters dream is a reflection of his perfect tranquil place complete with a replica of one he held dear given artificial life through the moon presence. Some have harmed the doll to find that she has pale blood. This is a stretch but, we may be pulled into his hunters dream through some pact between the moon presence and he.. the great old ones motives are unknown but it found a way to use the first hunter whilst traping him in what he thought he wanted.. it must be akin to hell
