Slew's studio is very huge and all the works hanging on the wall shows that he is worth watching and to learn from him. Thanks Slew for your free tutorial !
Love how in depth you got with this one. Love the "step" process. Really helps organize the project. Always with the heat Slew, and you portrayed your girlfriend beautifully!! 👏👏👏
Bro makes me want to paint again, I’m glad he follows his own process I mean we all have different way in which we work. Keep it up with the amazing work.
Remember that you could also use transfer paper and print the photo on like 60% opacity. Just open it in Paint and use preferences of printing to print it in poster mode so you could then combine all sheets together and put them on the transfer paper that is on the canvas. When you don't really know what block of colors to paint, you can use photoshop to posterize the photo so you can see where and what colors to paint on the canvas. Both these tips will help you save a few hours :) I just want to share what I learned back when I started painting two years ago ^^
That's great tips for students! That's what I do with them! I show them the posterize version so they can see better the values and it changes so much their perspective!
After the first few seconds of watching your video, I knew something interesting was coming. I wasn't wrong: the steps you present are essential for making your work unique. The rest is in the hands of the executing painter. Thank you very much for sharing the video.
Slew, you do a wonderful job! This is how I learned to paint. Your tutorials are awesome. Keep it up my friend. Thank you for sharing your time, your skill and your adventure👍🤟🪡🎨
Thank you for sharing. This video is so informative and educational. I believe more college art instructors should watch this one and incorporate in their teaching because the way you simplified it and made it so easy to follow is top notch!
Such an informative tutorial on painting a realistic face in just five steps! 🎨👤 The breakdown is so clear and helpful, making the process feel much more manageable. I appreciate the tips and techniques you shared-definitely going to try these out in my own work. Thanks for the excellent guidance!
Probably one of the best and least intimidating tutorials I’ve ever seen here on RUclips :-) and believe me I watch a lot of them! currently, I don’t even paint and oils and/or acrylic… I do watercolor mostly and pastel, but your explanation makes it pretty easy to apply to any medium :-) i’ve always heard of the grid method, I know it’s absolutely fundamental and age old reliable technique, but it always looked boring and intimidating and I’m actually considering trying it because of this video!
I paint since 2016 and used to do acrylics but now I am doing oil but I am not able to do portraits. Really hard. Congratulations you are extremely talented. I did one Portrait for my daughter on the top of a mountain but just the back view! 😂
Hi SLEW. -.ZeS.- from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). Joined your channel a few months ago but I don't post much (not a lot of spare time, if you know what I mean!). Love your channel! Very interesting and full of cool new ideas and creative process... I like the limited palette approach! I use it in Watercolor and Gouache (my current preferred mediums) and I'll be starting into Acrylics soon too, but always with a limited palette (less costs and you learn soooo much more quicker!). Your Cyclops also inspired me to do a small piece (no copies, I swear!). But I follow your channel since I subscribed (I found you through Jess Karp's channel when she visited you in NY). I also watched some of your podcasts (I sometimes put 'em on while I'm doin' my own stuff)... you got a nice voice for radio! 😁😁😁👍 Well, good stuff and keep it up (NY & Brooklyn costs must be a killer nowadays!)... and I'll keep watching (with my all seeing eye!). 😂😂😂 Cheers from Sunny Spain, Dude! 😁👍😎
Forgot to ask a question... I don't have a RUclips channel yet or anything but... Why do people usually send a message just saying... "Fist one"! (To send a message...???) Is there some kind if competition I'm unaware of? ('Cause what's the frigging point? If you know what I mean). 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyways... DONT EVER STOP! Your Art is inspiring, as well as your approach! Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎
Woh ! In a few of your paintings you had an issue with the eyes, i think you have solved it ! I really like your chanel and the progress (i follow since 5 or 6 years now !) (Sorry for my english 🇫🇷)
Again I have to say you are progressing well in your portrait paining! Even though I do not use the grid method myself, I think it has helped you get proportions down much better! Pretty much most artists take the same approach to building up a painting, yet I’m one of the oddballs, where I come in from a different process. Not saying my way is correct, but I do ok with it. The thing is, don’t be shy to try other ways to build upon a painting. I know I keep trying other methods, and learn new techniques along the way. Keep up the good work!❤❤
This was very informative. Thank you for posting! I am new to painting and portraits are way too intimidating to me at this point but you make it look so easy. :)
Thank you for a short and long video s because I wouldn't be click on a long one at first thinking I'd have to sift through a couple hours for the main information.. at least I get the gist before I hear you expound with details .. thank you
Hey slew, buddy this was great to watch, I love how you paint and how it turned out.. great video great painting and thanks for the inspiration buddy 😊 ✌️🕺🏽x
Great job Slew. I just discovered you in the last week and noticed how you’ve improved since your videos from 2 years ago. I’ve also learned a lot from you. Thanks!
My good advice, don't stay too long painting a same thing, 9hours for example, our brain plays tricks! try take a time... or use a mirror to see through another perspective!
I completely agree. I usually only paint for max 5 hours per session. This day specifically I had a lot to do for filming as well as slowly explain for the longer premium video so it just tuned into a longer session!

I'm always so insecure when it comes to portraits but breaking it down into these steps really helps a lot. Thank you :-)

You need to make a video of your own. Sounds interesting.
That's great tips for students! That's what I do with them! I show them the posterize version so they can see better the values and it changes so much their perspective!
I love how the glaze sort of wakes up the painting, it's a beautiful thing to see. It's like it smooths and brightens the whole painting.
Portraits are super hard for me but watching your videos fills me with confidence to hopefully give it a shot someday!
Well organized and presented. This is the process I use if painting from a photo.
After the first few seconds of watching your video, I knew something interesting was coming. I wasn't wrong: the steps you present are essential for making your work unique. The rest is in the hands of the executing painter. Thank you very much for sharing the video.
Your girlfriend have beautiful, soulful eyes. This classical style you paint is by far my favorite you do! ❤
Slew, you do a wonderful job! This is how I learned to paint. Your tutorials are awesome. Keep it up my friend. Thank you for sharing your time, your skill and your adventure👍🤟🪡🎨

I sometimes do the outline with a Sharpie and in case of a mistake, I can either white-out with gesso or erase with sandpaper.

Great job Slew. I just discovered you in the last week and noticed how you’ve improved since your videos from 2 years ago. I’ve also learned a lot from you. Thanks!
