Too bad this old guy doesn't live, near me. I'd help him for nothing and wouldn't want anything from him in return. I hope and pray he finds good people to help him. 🤔🙏🏻✌️
How can I get in touch with this gentlemen, I would love to inherit that land, I'm destined to be up there, I have just had some hiccups, I'm a North Carolina native.
I grew up in Celo/Asheville. My grandmother is part of the community. Joe just passed away last week. What a lovely man. He left nothing but positivity behind
Joe might be 80, bent over and using a bush crafted walking stick, but his mind is sharp as a tack and his eyes and ears are perfect so he just may be onto something with his herbal remedies. Like he mentioned, the Chinese are into herbal remedies and let's face it, they've been doing it for over 4,000 years. Who knows, without his plants, surroundings, stress-free lifestyle and commitment to life-long learning he may have been in a nursing home sitting in a wheelchair by 80. Good on him, living his dream which is more than most of us say or do.
@@katylee1914 My grandma passed away at 89 recently, natural cause, very bad, unbalanced diet (partly because of financial situation) and absolutely 0 sport in her life. What i'm trying to say is that genetics play the biggest role here. Dude could as well lack in nutrients and still live very long, while other people stay fit and lead healthy lives but at 60 their bodies are already broken down and they often have some serious illnesses. There's probably a bigger chance for that in such an unhealthy country like the US.
Joe Hollis passed away in November, like 3 months after this video was posted. I like to think he saw the huge respect and attention to his work and felt like his dreams had come true- that people were flocking to his vision and he felt at peace. RIP .
That is sad to hear of his passing! I would have loved to had the chance to converse with him and soaked up as much knowledge as I could absorb! What is the latest news of his Garden of Eden?
I've been out at this man's property. He gives tours of the herbs and plants he grows and three years ago when I visited it was hard for me and other 20-30 year old's to keep up with him. Just zips around. He's a wealth of knowledge, his book collection was incredibly impressive.
The craziest part of what you do Peter is 99% of the people watching this video would have never known or this man he would have blown in the wind of eternity. NOW his story lives with us and we take a part of him with us forever. You are doing some powerful work please never quit.
@@100millioneuros because you missed the whole point, Mr. 1MilEuros, and the point is he follows a way of life which is oriented towards fitting in with nature (and nature is chaotic on its own), as opposed to changing everything, which he does to some degree but tries not to do too much.
Had the great fortune to have Joe as a teacher and visited his property numerous times to learn and garden. True garden wizard. RIP Joe. Thanks for the video. Great to see him again in this way. 🙏
Is his property still being operated? I'd live to visit it. Are you able to disclose the location and info about visitation? So sorry he's passed. Truly enjoyed listening to him and learning from him in this video.
A man living in a remote off the grid location for 50 years below the poverty line, is more composed and better spoken than a lot of public figures in 2023.
For many they get burned out or stressed out living this new age culture out and just want to live closer to a basic life - It can be done but you have to know a lot - I live in a rural area but I still go to town once a month or two months for groceries - If you want to live real basic it doesn't cost much to live at all - if you have trees on land it's easy to cut wood and build things - I've had electric bills at times that were never higher than $9 a month - I just used a small chest fridge and fan in summer - I'm ok with out air-condition - I still use a lot of wood for heat - but some electric heat - For most they would think I live hard -
This man talking like he's 20 years old with his whole life ahead of him still making all these plans for the future. Incredible mentality. A lot of respect to this man.
This is what should be on the Internet. You gave this man a voice and immortalised him and his work. Beautiful. Hope someone shows the love in that place like he did
Joe was recently diagnosed with cancer and is now in hospice care. The gofundme for him the mountain garden just released this news. Watching this video again in honor of Joe and all the good he brought to this world.

Fantastic! I'm a 78 year old retired architect. My greatest regret is joining the society at large and wasting my life doing what the people with money request. I envy Joe Hollis and celebrate his life. Way to go, Joe!
Your comment is interesting to me. Since I was a child, I was obsessed with designing homes, especially on hillsides and on cliffs above the ocean. I grew up in Laguna Beach. But for the reasons you gave in retrospect, my parents persuaded me not to go in that direction. I regretted not having the will to make my own decision, however, my two best friends are Architects. From their experience working with clients, I definitely understand my parent's perspective!

His mind is sharp as a tac. Testament to the power of nature and self sufficiency. No lack of purpose. Lack of purpose is the demise of the mind and body. Thank you Peter. Love this.
Yes for all his healthy ways and encyclopaedia of plant 🪴 knowledge, he is not in very good health but I hope there are young people interested and willing to carry on his terrific work.
Joe is an outstanding fellow as you know Peter. But this is for the remainder reading- the book was only cracked, Joe is a walking botanist, full of wisdom. I've had the grand pleasure of visiting Joe and spent several days on his property with him. His knowledge of the plant kingdom blew my mind. It was a most interesting experience. I'm glad to see he is still getting around. I deeply enjoyed sitting on the deck in the evenings and absorbing all the peace; the tops of huge Tulip Poplars swaying in the breezes. Some beautiful specimens. [Update] - it's come to my knowledge that Joe has since passed- he passed end of 2023.

I had a great great uncle who lived in WV, died in the 80’s at 107 years old. Lived completely off the grid. No electricity or running water, no vehicle. He worked as a walking mailman, he walked 5 miles every day and quit working at 105.

Don't promote capitalism. CAPITALISM has failed. It had failed from the start but there were lands and resources to exploit back then, which keeps it going, not so much now and its cracks are beginnning to show.
This gentleman has more to offer to the world than Washington DC as a whole. I am in my 70s and wish I had the energy to go help this man and learn his way of life.
I 'd hate to think what would happen to this place if 8 people moved into it. It's one thing building it all up from scratch using hard work, it's quite another just being gifted it with everything already built for you. People don't value what they haven't worked for. It's likely to attract some very unconscientious people with a completely different outlook to this guy.
@@sammyb1651That's the wrong line of thinking imo. He said it himself, he wants people to join him and expand on the groundwork he has built. It won't be an "easy" transition from typical modern living, and will definitely need to build more houses and clear brush/trees to make room for such. It's expansion, more hands make light work.
@@N.E.TGaming Yeah, it's a great idea in theory. The practice is another matter altogether however. I'm not saying I don't hope he succeeds. I hope it does. Big respect for the gentleman thinking beyond just himself when he said that he wanted "a community to live here..". He is trying to pass what he has to more than just ONE person!
Thats the only way we will survive as humanity. I think Peter is one of the best interviewers ever. He doesn't try to have his own personality be center stage, he actually lets the interviewee speak and be known to the audience. Worthy of a journalism award, imho.
Exactly. Peter knows exactly the right time to talk, when the conversation seems to be stalling and he asks the perfect question to get the conversation moving again.
I agree 100%! I rarely share videos with friends and family or anyone for that matter. However I have shared Peter's channel and video with SO many ppl! lol He is amazing! He remains neutral Non-political at least he doesn't speak on it or let his personal political or religious views wiggle their way into the interviews. He has had several different cultures and religions on too. He lets them tell their own story in a beautiful way. It's done with compassion for the person he interviews. I love Peters journalism!
Sure, he is fine but a journalism award? No. If anything he's better at finding greater stories than the journalism that follows. There were, in my opinion, much better questions to ask Joe. Also, even if a goofy vlogger did a piece on Joe it would still be pretty amazing.@@wedemgoyz7678

Throughout my adult life - I’m 61 now - I’ve had brief connections with folks who live like Joe. I grew up in Alaska and had the privilege as a child of living in the Bush. It was a magical childhood. The beauty of that way of life always stuck with me, though the closest I’ve come since is to live rurally a few times in the past 40 years. I became a master gardener and for a time a landscaper. Now, out of necessity, I’m in a stressful desk job that is soul-crushing. Joe is an inspiration and a reminder not to give up on the dream of returning to the land.
So many of us… I always love going to a place that has more trees, I love the smell and the silence… I really wish we “peace and earth lovers” would in the lottery so we could retire and go live like we want to… I want to built wood furniture and have my own garden.
Great video of wisdom. What a great man! I have a desire at 60 to go back to my roots. I lived in the countryside away from the city. Had 4 nice gardens privacy beautiful pine trees A nice size yard. And the city next door was only 10 minutes away and convenient. I'm still in a big city now not living my dream. Prices have soared and my plans are dreams Like they were when I was 15 I hope to live on 2 acres or even 1 acre would be a dream. Does anyone else feel this way.. what has happened to our world. Wow
In 2020 at the height of the Covid scare I found a little over half a hilly acre, 10 min away from a small town. The 40+ year old mobile home sits on a slope overlooking a small pond. I fixed up the trailer, planted a few native trees and shrubs the first Spring and I've been adding more natives every Spring. At nearly 70 years of age I finally found a slice of my own heaven on earth. With gratitude.
@luannd62. Same! I was born in Alaska in 1963. I remember spending time in Talkeetna with an amazing woman and her husband. My parents took me there for extended stays when my brother was a newborn. I couldn't wait for them to leave so I could have Vera to myself. 😂 She was the coolest woman. ❤ Their homestead was only accessible a couple times a year, by bog buggy. 😂
That would crush me too. I have to see the green vegetation and have dirt under my fingernails to be happy. In life sometimes we have to do work like that, generally not for ourselves but for others, be it family, husband what have you.
Our elders are so important to learn from. If you ever find yourself amongst them I implore you to listen to their stories and experiences. I'm proud to have been in Healthcare for almost a decade now, because people like our elderly friend in the video will change your life in how you view the world. Here was a man who understood the ephemerality of life and the connections and intersections and desiderata of all life....I think he came closer to understanding the meaning of life and was closer to "God" than most urban individuals can ever be or understand. When you look at all the religions you begin to see the human attempt to describe and grasp the ethers of life. Joe was a green man, part human and part plant...he fit perfectly amid the natural shade forest of Appalachia.

The point i was making is Joe represents what I think all "hard working Americans" are trying to get closer to instead of farther away from. Yes the man may have a website and take advantage of the modern amenities where it pays dividends to do so, but i dont personally believe that takes away for what this man represents and what hes trying to garner in his community, along with others. I could be wrong, but i personally think a much healthier, forward moving thinking way to go in the future are people trying to get back to this and worrying about how we tackle not having "modern amenities" as accessible as it is today vs people looking for ways to not like there fellow neighbor and make there team win in there world-view. Appreciate everyone who understood what i was going for as i was not intending to incite a debate. Feel free to disagree but personal attacks only discredit your credibility . Food for thought

The part when he asked "are you still learning in this world?" The way he said "oh, it's endless." Gave me so much hope. I've been struggling for almost a year to stay alive and I just really needed to hear that.
When I was a kid in the 1980s, in Tennessee, there were amazing backwood carpenters that made furniture with hand tools. They didn't use screws or nails. Today you would call it tongue and grove. They made their own glue and metal brackets... and the furniture went together like a well-designed puzzle. They would sell it at the local Drive-in theater fleamarket or you could find one of them at the Co-op. Actual old-world carpentry is a lost art.
It is! My grandfather was a cobbler and a saddler..more rare these days. He'd be 82 if alive today. His grandfather was a basket maker well into his 80s. I wish so much I had one of his baskets. I think there's a Renaissance on the horizon, though. Find your passion and hone those skills!😍
I have 2 handmade front porch rockers that my father bought back in the 70's at the Wood Whittlers in Gatlinburg that are never gonna wear out! Also, I have a handmade custom ordered jewelry box from there that I absolutely cherish that will last long after I'm gone! I'd much rather have the old-world furniture anyday!

For many they get burned out or stressed out living this new age culture out and just want to live closer to a basic life -
It can be done but you have to know a lot - I live in a rural area but I still go to town once a month or two months for groceries -
If you want to live real basic it doesn't cost much to live at all - if you have trees on land it's easy to cut wood and build things -
I've had electric bills at times that were never higher than $9 a month -
I just used a small chest fridge and fan in summer -
I'm ok with out air-condition - I still use a lot of wood for heat - but some electric heat -
For most they would think I live hard -
And his know-how of finding simple solutions that work for everyone would be far better than the divisive crap we get now.

This man reminded me of a certain someone that I took care of for years who recently passed. I will miss you Al.
they are so full of wisdom and experience, the way they try to tell us about being patient and to not get too anxious about thing you cannot control
Maybe listen to some old people, because when you get old you start to hate people and things and those type of old people you learn nothing from them…
Me on phone, pencil in hand, making a call:
"Gram, can you tell me your chocolate cake recipe?"
Suspense, excited to hear her old family secret.
Gram: "Well, you get 2 boxes of Duncan Himes"
Me: Pencil drops
"Nevermind Gram, I love you"
😢
They have a lot of wisdom until they start their racist ramblings.
The Smart young folks should be hanging out with the older Grandparents telling us about their truth knowledge and experience.
Don’t let the Criminals Corruption Organization system by design control your mind, your freedom and your life like COVID19 PLANDEMIC
Sad Joe has passed away. He has a wealth of knowledge to share. I could see a lot of young folks working and learning from him.
How did you found out and when?
Here was a man who understood the ephemerality of life and the connections and intersections and desiderata of all life....I think he came closer to understanding the meaning of life and was closer to "God" than most urban individuals can ever be or understand. When you look at all the religions you begin to see the human attempt to describe and grasp the ethers of life. Joe was a green man, part human and part plant...he fit perfectly amid the natural shade forest of Appalachia.

Someone had posted he past away - you can tell in this video he didn't have long to go - he was micronutrient defficenst -
I'm also 68 but healthy - I have know very many over the yrs that only lived to 50 or 60 -
just the other day a gal I knew passed at 68 she was in his condition - if we're getting the nutrients we need we can live healthy 120 yrs -
Even a dog and cats full life span is 35 yrs - that has been learned from the 120 blue zone tribes across the world were many live 120 yrs or longer with good health and there dogs and cats live 35 yrs or longer -
@@able880 You really lack an understanding of genetics. Telomeres and longevity genes decide lifespan. If you don't have good ones, nothing you do matters. We are all born with a finite timetable, and they are not at all equal. For example, a great dane will never make it to 35 due to bad genes. Same for most humans.

He doesn't even realize that he IS the epitome of what we are trying to get back to as a community. If you somehow ever see this, you are truly inspiring in this ever-expanding digital world Joe. Hats off to you sir
Edit: I want to say i recognize the modern medical industry is quite illustrious, hence if anyone who used that argument watched the video instead of looking for a reason to argue, you would have heard him say to Peter he would drive into town and use those services when needed.

I’m from a tribe in Borneo and I’m glad this old guy had the opportunity to experience our culture first hand and that it had a profound impact on the rest of his life. I noticed a couple of Borneo artifacts in his house - 21:30 a beadwork wall hanging by the door and a Borneo shield on the wall by the stairs just above his head (26:19). Much respect to what he’s doing. We, in Sarawak, Borneo, owe a lot of gratitude to all the Peace Corps workers who came in the 1960’s and 70’s to teach at our schools or work on agriculture.
I want to live in Borneo with the orangutans, would that be possible if I lived with the Borneo tribals?

When I was a kid in the 1980s, in Tennessee, there were amazing backwood carpenters that made furniture with hand tools. They didn't use screws or nails. Today you would call it tongue and grove. They made their own glue and metal brackets... and the furniture went together like a well-designed puzzle. They would sell it at the local Drive-in theater fleamarket or you could find one of them at the Co-op. Actual old-world carpentry is a lost art.
That's so cool. Definitely a lost art.
