I think this video was meant for me. I really want to learn Portuguese and French. After that, theres another list of languages I want to learn. I almost feel frustrated and overwhelmed by the amount of languages I would like to learn. But i realy want to believe in myself that i can learn several.

Damn! You're very talented. I'm 16 now and wanna learn as many languages as I can. Although I want fast progress, I also want the language to stick with me for the rest of my life. @@AlexaSerafimides find entertainment/media you enjoy in foreign languages . For Japanese I like anime/video games/youtube channels so I can constantly expose myself to them. To me Japanese is the easiest language because there’s thousands of anime and video games (and I’ve literally watched thousands and played thousands lol). But you can also watch and play them in any language nowadays, although it’s even better if you do something that came directly from the country to start off. For Brazilian Portuguese I like watching Easy Portuguese series as they do street interviews and show off culture naturally. (Love the super warm/friendly vibe and aura) There’s a lot of Easy language series on RUclips that you can find for your language of interest most likely. Since you’re interested in multiple languages I would recommend just looking for interesting videos on RUclips until something resonates with you. And those Easy series have subs on your language so you can screen shot them and show them to ChatGPT and ask it to break down the vocabulary and grammar , you’ll be able to learn extremely fast with technology helping you to. And can make flash cards as you learn culture and enjoy entertainment. You can experiment with learning completely different languages spending 15-30 mins on each daily first , or if you do similar languages maybe spacing them out a little like every other day to avoid confusion , and getting the pronunciation down in both . You can do more time if you’re having fun, just don’t burn out. I’m doing both Spanish and Portuguese nowadays and sometimes it can be confusing if I study them too close together because I’m a beginner in both. I’m fluent in Japanese though so I generally just use Japanese and then one Romance language at a time. And am also doing Chinese which is easier for me since I know Japanese. But it’s easy to burn out when I’m not having fun and kinda just force myself to do everything daily. Because of my positive experience with Japanese I know I need entertainment or to find something I can enjoy to get into the other languages more eventually. But if you have a reason for learning certain languages you’ll be able to continue them more naturally.
WOW I never thought of learning languages this way? I am a native English speaker with a B2 level in Spanish. Learning Greek and German at the same time. Trying to become more comfortable with Spanish by using it more often. Thank you for the video it was insightful.
I love this! I'm learning 4 languages at the same time and everyone online says don't! But I find whenever I ignore them and deliberately switch between them regularly, I don't mix them up anywhere near as much as if I put one on the shelf for 6 months! I think our brains can handle multiple languages much better than we realise!
Learning languages one at a time is probably one of the worst pieces of advice possible. You have to keep them active in some way, even if you aren't studying them in the same way or level! I feel like people see language learning more as a "studying" way instead of "speaking," which is a way different process in the brain. I am glad it helped! 😊💌

Question: when you do the “mixing languages“ exercise, do you repeat the same sentence, once in each language, or do you alternate sentences? For example, would you say “How are you?“ in German, then Spanish, then French, and then say, “It’s nice to meet you“ three times, once in each language? Or, would you instead say “How are you? “ in Spanish, and then “It’s nice to to meet you“ in German, etc.? Thanks so much! This is a really great video. this problem is something I struggle with, too, and I am excited to have these helpful ideas.
Nope! Sorry for the unclear instructions! I just go one language & one sentence without repeating the same thing. I think it really imitates a more natural way of talking. I imagine it as if having three friends who all speak different languages and that I would be talking to each one in order if you know what I mean.
I'm native English and I've naturally always been good at spanish ,right now I'm learning tagalog basically filipino ,when I'm speaking filipino I throw in some spanish because they are related ,it's like two birds with one stone.

I’ve been mixing Korean up with Japanese ever since I took on Korean. I never really mixed languages up before and this has been very frustrating. I don’t typically like to output unless I’m having a real conversation but I will give this a try.
I assume the looking up words in your target language advice applies largely to intermediates and upper beginners because absolute beginners would not be able to look up words only in their target language since they don't know it.
Definitely! But also, the most effective way of learning a language is to push yourself, let's say, if a word is very similar in Spanish & French, and you didn't know the word in either, you can then look it up in your native language and learn the word in both of your target languages.
I have to put the speed on 0.75x to watch the video as it looks and sounds sped up. I don't understand why you do this but it make it annoying to watch the video...
@@Zargo09 The problem is not the speed itself because it is actually a normal speaking speed and I can understand what she says. The problem is that it is obviously sped up and doesn't sound natural. Some moments even sound more sped up than others. I find it disturbing. It distracts me from what she's actually saying and I have to focus harder. The 0.75x speed make it sounds more like her natural speaking speed. I don't know the point of doing this instead of just keeping a natural unedited audio.
@@Alex-Knz I think she just speaks quickly - I have ADHD, speak extremely fast, and am a native English speaker and to me she doesn't sound unnaturally fast. I usually watch videos on 1.5 - 2 x speed and even when sped up she's still within normal range for me and I personally prefer faster speakers. I think the issue is more so the mic / audio quality which is giving some artefacts/ might be peaking a bit, and when she's edited she's cut very close to the speaking so there aren't as many pauses. In any case, she's obviously a relatively new RUclipsr, and practice with this and better equipment come with time and money. I think you could have given this feedback in a more encouraging way, especially as many people watch at different speeds and have different needs so it's not a hard and fast rule that she is too fast or is too slow. Just a thought :)

So you might understand why some details can make it more difficult to maintain focus for some people. I've watched a few of her other videos and they don't seem to be sped up like this one. If I gave this feedback in a harsh way, I didn't mean to, I only use the words I know. I should've also explained the issue in more detail in the first place. Yes, people watch at different speeds and have different needs, it's for this exact reason the video shouldn't be sped up and let people the choice of the speed. You seem to be able to understand why this can be an issue for other people but also seem to invalidate our experience by saying yours is different. --> "Just a thought :)"

The phone I am using for filming & editing is a bit glitchy, though, and it might be a reason why this turned out this way! I am so sorry if it was bothersome! It seems like learning to switch languages is its own skill. Besides that, though, which language I've practiced most lately tends to come up first. I'm trying to get Spanish and Portuguese separate. Ten years ago I lived in Brazil for a year and a half where I learned Portuguese. I haven't had much opportunity to practice it since then. I started learning Spanish and now when I try to speak Portuguese, Spanish comes up--even though my Portuguese used to be much better than my current level of Spanish. I'll try out these tips to see if I can get then both up to a good level. Thanks!
Yes! This is why it's so important for your languages to be used as often as possible, with each other. This is also why learning languages completely separately is likely a bad idea..

It's possible that different approaches work for different people-I'm not sure everyone could cope with the feeling of chaos or uncertainty of playing with two languages like this.
Nothing to do with your tip... I used to do a lot of work for some students from Zimbabwe. When they spoke to me it was all English and very good. When they spoke to each other it was 95% Zimbabwe we occasional English words thrown in. Like blah blah blah blah dining table blah blah blah. Blah blah, blah blah blah staircase, blah blah. I asked them about it and they said, they didn't even realise they were doing it. But they only did it with nouns. Interesting.
Interesting! That, to me, sounds more like code-switching. There's a lot of information & research done on this topic, specifically due to bilingual households. It was pretty much the case in many households in Turkey with kurdish people!

This has happened to me with languages I am learning. If I am speaking one language and someone comes along and speaks to me in the other language, it is hard for my brain to switch over. Even in my native language it has become difficult for me to recall words. Off topic:what mic are you using?

Most RUclipsrs (especially American ones) speak far too slow for me so I have to watch on double speed and it's sometimes frustrating when they're so slow that even double speed isn't enough, but I wouldn't assume they've artificially slowed it down and I feel these comments are a bit unnecessary. Different accents / individuals speak at different paces, that's why the x 0.75 / x 1.5 tool exists so we can each have our needs met.

Awesome video! Loved it. I've tried that before, but now this reaffirms my belief and I'll give it a better attempt. I only have two languages fluent/around-native : English and Japanese Then, Chinese Mandarin somewhere between Beginner-Intermediate (Japanese helps a ton for me for this language with the hanzi/kanji) And recently been trying Brazilian Portuguese, and some Spanish. I'm really not used to Romance languages, spent most of my life with Asian languages, and it's hard to stay motivated, but I still think they sound kinda sexy and beautiful. I’m learning French and at A2 level, my native language is Igbo but English has always been my language of learning so I’m fluent in both. I was wondering where I should get to with French before I start Mandarin Chinese which is my next goal.
To be honest, I think you could start now if you wanted to! At this level, you could totally make it work, as you will have a beginner vs A2 level. However, keep in mind that how you feel about it is really important!!

If you’ve got the foundations for one of those, it’s easy to continue w it and/or learn the other. Then kpop etc becoming more popular has encouraged these same westerners to learn Korean. I find myself wanting to add something completely different like Arabic to balance it out😭
forgetting word is common.... even in native language people forget words... in that case try to represent the word in alternative way... next time you will remember...
Exactly!! Forgetting words is completely natural to everyone, even native speakers. To improve your vocabulary, I recommend reading novels. I'll make a video about that as soon as possible!
I'm sorry, i am not sure I understand. Whatis the main idea here? We should be using all our languages often and consistently every day, in order to make the progress? Do you not recommend studying one language at a time?
The big point of this exercise is to keep your languages active and be able to switch as fast as possible. Say you're at A0 level in Spanish, A2 in French and B1 in English. You will then use all these languages at the same time, for example, translating between English and Spanish instead of your native language, so that you can improve all your target languages AND be able to speak without mixing them up & stuttering while switching from one to another! Is this the same that learning your third or fourth language through your second language or other language that is not your native language? or is it a complete different thing? I know you said is not code switching but I would like to give it a try with Japanese because I've been learning Korean and I'm at B1 level maybe, kind of ...and I know very little Japanese (I really do not want to mix them). Yes, and no. Using your target languages to use newer ones is another way of exercising this concept! Code-switching is a more natural, subconscious thing depending on your environment (Korean Americans will speak English with each other, but maybe switch to Korean around their grandparents). The main idea is that if you don't want to get confused speaking either Japanese or Korean, you should switch between them as often as possible and train your brain to essentially be able to seamlessly switch between languages like a native in both.
Never learn multiple languages at the same time. Focus is the secret to success. By trying to do multiple things at the same time, you may end up doing nothing.

I only have two languages fluent/around-native : English and Japanese
Then, Chinese Mandarin somewhere between Beginner-Intermediate (Japanese helps a ton for me for this language with the hanzi/kanji)
And recently been trying Brazilian Portuguese, and some Spanish. I'm really not used to Romance languages, spent most of my life with Asian languages, and it's hard to stay motivated, but I still think they sound kinda sexy and beautiful.
What are your thoughts on learning languages that are extremely similar at the same time like Portuguese and Spanish?
I’m learning French and at A2 level, my native language is Igbo but English has always been my language of learning so I’m fluent in both. I was wondering where I should get to with French before I start Mandarin Chinese which is my next goal.
To be honest, I think you could start now if you wanted to! At this level, you could totally make it work, as you will have a beginner vs A2 level. However, keep in mind that how you feel about it is really important!!

@@lorenaleoncio2106 maybe it’s just me but I guessed it was because French and Spanish are popular choices in western schools (I’m from the uk). If you’ve got the foundations for one of those, it’s easy to continue w it and/or learn the other. Then kpop etc becoming more popular has encouraged these same westerners to learn Korean.

forgetting word is common.... even in native language people forget words... in that case try to represent the word in alternative way... next time you will remember...
Exactly!! Forgetting words is completely natural to everyone, even native speakers. To improve your vocabulary, I recommend reading novels. I'll make a video about that as soon as possible!

I'm sorry, i am not sure I understand. Whatis the main idea here? We should be using all our languages often and consistently every day, in order to make the progress? Do you not recommend studying one language at a time?
The big point of this exercise is to keep your languages active and be able to switch as fast as possible. Say you're at A0 level in Spanish, A2 in French and B1 in English. You will then use all these languages at the same time, for example, translating between English and Spanish instead of your native language, so that you can improve all your target languages AND be able to speak without mixing them up & stuttering while switching from one to another! Is this the same that learning your third or fourth language through your second language or other language that is not your native language? or is it a complete different thing? I know you said is not code switching but I would like to give it a try with Japanese because I've been learning Korean and I'm at B1 level maybe, kind of ...and I know very little Japanese (I really do not want to mix them). By the way I am Spanish native speaker, my second language is English (B2) and am currently learning Korean (A2~B1) and Thai (A2). thx for the video 😊.
Yes, and no. Using your target languages to use newer ones is another way of exercising this concept! Code-switching is a more natural, subconscious thing depending on your environment (Korean Americans will speak English with each other, but maybe switch to Korean around their grandparents). The main idea is that if you don't want to get confused speaking either Japanese or Korean, you should switch between them as often as possible and train your brain to essentially be able to seamlessly switch between languages like a native in both.
