Hi, fellow polyglot here, my friends and I have followed you for a while and it's just dawning on me that it's been like 10 years 😿 Glad to see your passion still burning 😊
Omg me too, now I feel old 😂😅
I didn't recognize her at first because it's been a long time, but when she showed the old videos it clicked. Omg it's truly been a long time!!

When I started watching you when I was a child I only knew English but now I know French and I just started learning Portuguese. Thanks for all the memories and good times
Can you help me learn French? The pronunciation is tuff and unlike Spanish which I did in school I have no idea how to pronounce anything
as someone who been studying it for 7 years i know how you feel plus the pronunciation isn't that much of a deal @rmilan3839
@@thisformilan3839 hi :) i’m french if I can help 😊
Je suis française. I'm french and I plan to make a RUclips channel for those who want to study it easily. Just don't give up ! 💙🤍❤️

I love how you noted that "The world is more available to me" when you learn new languages. You are excited about connecting to more people. Back in college, my Freshman Comp professor wrote this quote on the board:
The limits of our language are the limits of our world. - Wittgenstein
This quote really made a difference in my life. It made learning languages to be so purposeful.
As far as language learning goes, I have learned so much Russian using a combination of Pimsleur and Duolingo. When I used Pimsleur CDs to learn Polish 17 years ago, I didn't have Duolingo, but I STILL remembered SO MUCH Polish when started with Russian, but Duolingo really upped my game.
Wow that sounds like one hell of a teacher!
This is the exact reason I started language learning and why I've deliberately learned the 5 most spoken languages (Mandarin still under construction). To communicate with the world
This is a great approach and philosophy to have when learning languages. ☝️
There are a number of closed minded older minds from my part of the world who are too afraid to approach languages this way.
Learning languages makes me happy, as does meditating, journaling, traveling, reading, and learning in general. Even though I'm at a rough point in life, these things make me feel better. Love you, Jo!!
Same omg
Me too, love this
💙
Hi, do you know about Jesus? He lived, died, and resurrected so that those who believe in Him shouldnt perish but have everlasting life. Cause yeah, right now, those who live in sin are dead in it; the wages of sin is death, but God gave a gift of life through Christ Jesus. So what? He loves us, He doesn't desire that any perish but reach repentance, and that includes you ❤. I pray you turn from your sins if you haven't yet and then seek God. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him in faith. 😊
I felt represented in your comment
Hi there , I was so happy to FINALLY see a black woman in the polyglot community, that means a lot to me, you're inspiring .

You know what.... I just watched this video because it's you; because I've been learning Spanish since I was in high school and I'm gonna be 34 this year and I'm still not where I want to be with the language. But you kind of just made me think that I'm probably learning too passively. The idea of repetition and really going hard to drive home what you're learning - that is very good advice. A lot of us have the problem of only being able to understand and not speak the language, and that is for lack of hammering home the grammar and the "essentials/basics" and also simply practicing speaking
yesss for spanish it can be pretty easy to find resources! you should def listen to music/watch tv in spanish because if helps you learn how it’s actually spoken. i struggled for a long time because i spoke like i swallowed a textbook lol but learning a more colloquial way to speak is better for travel or meeting new people.
I’ve been “try learning Spanish” most of my life, my mom tried teaching me and I’ve listened to Spanish learning videos on repeat and well I still know very little Spanish and have never held a conversation. But now well I need to learn be able to hold a basic introductory conversation in Hindi in 7 days, I’m 4 days in now and I can speak more Hindi than Spanish, I have chosen the things that I should be able to understand and speak for a first conversation like “Hello, my name is” and have written it down in Hindi then English to fill up a page and now I can actually remember and spell out almost everything I have written down, I am feeling really confident in this upcoming communication.
Yes, this is my issue as well. I do it passively and that's the reason, after almost 6 years, I'm still struggling. I don't practice everyday but this year I made the goal to reach B1/B2...B2 hopefully. Luckily I've already laid down the foundation so all I really need to do is continue building on what I have. I have 6 months to reach my goal, and I should be getting her journal tomorrow.
Aren't you terrified that one language will override the other. I had a brain fart in my Japanese tutoring and started spotting out French for some reason.
i’m learning arabic and whenever i try to speak my brain fills in the blanks with portuguese. same happens with spanish when im speaking portuguese. it just takes time, you’ll get there!
Lmao same, but for me spanish and chinese
Language interference is a thing.😂 But it's also fun. When you're detailed and focused, it happens less.
I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Language learning rocks!😊
I am brazilian, from Salvador and your videos are an important moment to my english studies, so, I love when it has a new video! Desculpa pelos possíveis erros.rsrsr...
Your English is good, there're some mistakes, like, you should've said "I love it when there're new videos" but it's normal and I'm sure you'll improve soon. I'm currently on the path to learning Portuguese and I've to say it's harder than I thought. I'm having a hard time with all those verb conjunctions haha
Good luck!! ❤
@@vivies2 I'm Brazilian and I have to agree with you 😅 I'm learning English and I've been meaning to learn Spanish too. Good luck with your journey, Portuguese is a difficult language, but it's a beautiful one ❤
You just dropped the entire goldmine. Thank you for this!

I have watched videos of people explaining how to study languages and this is by far the most detailed and helpful. Thanks. Am learning Chinese, 你好
There’s a few languages I want to learn and with time the list will likely grow… I took French from middle school to my sophomore year of high school but was never great at listening and speaking. I considered learning Spanish bc it’s the 2nd most spoken language in the US but somehow i fell in love with Korean. I sometimes get criticized for choosing Korean before learning Spanish (which is also on my list) but then i realize that if i follow what everyone else is saying instead of what i want-I’ll learn nothing. Never fully committing to any new language. Plus you never know where life may take you. I might need Korean someday. This video came at a perfect time.
Thanks
Hi I’m from Belgium so I speak flemish. You are doing a great job in our language 💪 I’m trying to learn Korean and I’m definitely gonna use your tips. 감사합니다 (thank you)

I am so happy I found your channel!! I’m learning Korean but I’ve gotten stuck between upper beginner/lower intermediate.
Thank you, i'm so excited for my journey into learning Portuguese.
I admire your energy!!!
I’m learning Swahili now. I started when I was in Kenya and am preparing to go back and be able to speak and sing in Swahili. I needed to see this. The why is there. Time for the action and accountability. ♥️
Kenyan here! Great that you're learning Swahili!
I want to learn Swahili too since my family is Kenyan. I now a bit, but I'm going to relearn once I learn German
Aww that is great. I want to learn Swahili and Spanish after I become fluent in French. I know a few words in Swahili.
Omg I cannot BELIEVE IT, just bumped into your channel and it’s been ages since I last saw a video of yours, so happy!!!!
You've inspired me!! I used to love learning languages when I was in college. I at one point was fluent in Spanish but haven't used it in such a long time. I'm feeling motivated to get back fluent in Spanish AND learn Italian for an upcoming trip to Italy! Thanks.
YAY! You cna do it!!!
What helps getting through the hard times is discipline or setting up a good habit routine for learning. Plus everything else that Jo said.
So true! Habit is more powerful than anything else!
You are a fantastic teacher and polyglot role model. On my 4th language. Nothing better than learning all about a new culture through language 💙.
Thanks for this Jo much love and blessings ❤🙏🏽
I learning english beacuse is so essential in my studies of college, so I'm watching your videos and the others channels, this is helping me a lot in my process of learning english. Thank you!
I needed to see this video. I started learning Portuguese (Brasileiro) over a year ago and I’m so glad I stuck with it. Watching this video inspired me to start practicing more vocally and more intentionally. Thank you!!
Hi there! I just started learning Brazilian Portuguese. How confident in Portuguese do you feel after one year, what would you rank yourself?
This video came at such a perfect time. I've been in the Middle East for a month now learning Arabic and hit that mental block you described, convincing myself this language is just too hard to master. Needed to remind myself that it's a long but beautiful journey ahead that could take me years or decades, but language learning will always be worth it in the end. Shukran ya habibti Jo!
Where in the Middle East are you!? I’m in the same boat, sis 🥲 Arabic is so hard but beautiful!
I remember when Jo started the 21 day challenge. I started it but never got further than the first day. Hopefully will try that again 😊
How are you all not excited!! She is amazing!!
You're doing so much, its honestly touching
Boy! The insights in this video! Girl you are 100% in a league of your own!
Thank you for making me feel so seen! My mother introduced me to Spanish and French when I was a child. I ditched the French early and devoted myself to Spanish. I added American Sign Language to my list in high school and Chinese to my life in my early 20's. I stopped nurturing them in my late 20's. In my 30's, they spinning the block on me! You have inspired me to document my journey and to understand the gift I truly have.🥰 This is my first time on your channel and I look forward to more of your content.

oh my GOD, this is amazing. first of all, I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of yours and second, the fact that you said my country makes me 10 times more interested in your Flemish learning journey. I'm originally from Suriname and we do speak Dutch and from what I hear it can be a challenging language or even an understandable language, which ever one it is, I'm sure the journey will be well worth it. the languages that I currently would like to learn and are learning are French, Italian and Turkish. Have fun on this Flemish learning journey. I hope that one day you can come to Suriname and speak Dutch.
Your energy is so inspiring and contagious that it makes me want to learn even more languages! 🤩 (But I’ll stick with my French journey for now)
I absolutely love you! You have given me hope. My two loves are Spanish and Turkish and I am quite frustrated. I let Turkish drop a bit to focus more on Spanish only to find out that I had forgotten a lot of things that I had already learned. So, I'll probably buy your book. I must remain consistent. I've already shared my video with my cousin who also likes languages. Who knows, maybe we can do the book together.
Idk y u popped up on my recommendation list but I’m glad you did cause your explanation and breakdown with PAR gives me hope and now I actually wanna restart and try to learn languages again I gave up so many times but it’s because of the frustration I get but I’m definitely gonna use your link and give it a try again so thank you😄🙏🏽
I'm attempting to learn my first second language which is Arabic misri and gotta say you're the reason I've gone with Pimsleur and on top of that I found an amazing tutur on Preply, Somaia! She is really really awesome! I've hit that kinda slump that you talked about there and I have to say Somaia told me the same thing and I'm kinda recognizing this part of the journey. For me its not a slump much as its a realization of what it actually takes to really learn a language/culture. It's a lot! But I've not stopped having an awesome time learning with a new friend! So thanks Jo! 🤘👿🤘
How’s your learning going? Good choice going with Egyptian though, it’s definitely the easiest dialect to learn!
That’s so cool. I did pimsleur for Spanish for a while but fell off and have been about getting a tutor. Hope you stick with it and are patient!

Hola Jo, ¿qué tal estás? My name is James and I came across your channel for the first time today, and I wish I had found it sooner. I watched your video on your reasons for learning languages and I found it very inspiring. I speak English and Spanish, understand a bit of Italian, French, and Portuguese and have this fleeting desire to someday be fluent in all of the above, although the realities of life have held me back. I also saw that you grew up, or at least spent a good amount of time in Connecticut. I was born in Connecticut and lived there for 34 years before moving to Spain to live with my Spanish wife and daughter. I was just wondering what part of Connecticut you're from. I don't have a channel of my own but I hope to someday create videos on language learning as inspiring as yours. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. Perhaps we can chat someday.

I mostly use Duolingo to learn French due to my busy schedule. I'm listening to French radio while working to get used to the accents and I has hyped that I could almost understand the language. It proves that applying language learning in daily life, (like listening to radio lol), is crucial.
Add more tools than Duolingo. It's a tool, but not a very good one on its own.

Don't use Duolingo because it makes sentences that don't make sense or that you will never use
