      Gosto de como a gente tem um "fallback" pra Latin quando o radical da palavra é o mesmo e sai uns "talentous" no lugar de "talented" mas a gente sabe que o anglófono vai entender como "skillful" de qualquer jeito :P
      A final de contas o inglês é filho do alemão com o francês e possuem duas paralavras pra cada conceito.

    It's neat to hear the differences between both Portuguese from Portugal & Portuguese from Brazil and how they claim the Brazilian version is more nasally. To my ear, I did think the Brazilian girl sounded nasally in every language she spoke. It's interesting how their accents carry over into the other languages they speak. 8:25 She's completely correct about that the Brazilian girl's R sounding more Dutch and it's quit cool she knew that. But only for the western half of NL (where Amsterdam and The Hague are). It's called the 'Randstad R' because of it, referring to the cities in west NL (the part that's actually called Holland). It's also associated with posh ways of speaking sometimes. That R-sound is why a lot of Dutch people who attempt English pronunciation tend to sound Irish to people from other countries, and I'm surprised she mentioned a Dutch R, rather than an Irish one.
    (Roughly the eastern half of NL has more the french r, and some places a rolling r, like many do in Belgium. Idk who cared, but there you go.)

    🥟🍜🧋As a native Mandarin-Chinese speaker, I wanna say:
    The tones are not that important when you first learn Mandarin. We can still understand you easily most of the time because Chinese is a very contextual language. Even a lot of the natives use wrong tones here and there but we still understand each other.
    What actually matters is to pronounce the "shape" of the vowels and consonants right.

    • @SinilkMudilaSama
      @SinilkMudilaSama 6 месяцев назад +2

      What a good notice friend that Mandarin is already evolving, vocal and consonant tones are more the area of art music itself not of language, that privacy blesses the ways of Mandarin that Mandarin will soon become a beautiful, rich and atonal language like the Austronesian languages. Thank you for talking about this detail, because the 5 vocal tones of Mandarin scare away foreigners from it , outside the alphabet but the tones worry people and make them give up, that in the near future simplified and traditional Mandarin embrace the idea of atonality of pronunciation and speech.🍷🍻🍷🍻

    6:00 Just to clarify, it’s not ‘male’ or ‘female’; it’s masculine and feminine. We don’t align sex or gender with things; it’s just grammatical gender, which we don’t think much about when we speak.

    • @alfrredd

    • @oliver_merida
      @oliver_merida 6 месяцев назад +11

      I thought the same when she was saying that. It's grammatical gender, so it is for the words, not the objects. The same object can have different names and the gender changes, for example in Spanish TV is "televisor" but also "televisión" the first one is masculine and the second one is feminine, so it's not the object itself that has the gender it's the word.

    • @MayseSantana
      @MayseSantana 6 месяцев назад +5

      Yes, I thought the same thing. Also, in 11:02 when they mention "embarazada" in Spanish being a false friend, Júlia says in Portuguese it will sound like "embarrassed" or "shy", but I think it's only true in English. In Portuguese, it means something like "tangled", as in tangled hair/strands/cables/etc

    • @FulanoSicrano-t2e
      @FulanoSicrano-t2e 6 месяцев назад +12

      @@MayseSantana Not quite. At least in European Portuguese, "embaraçado" (male) or "embaraçada" (female) can definitely mean "embarrassed". For instance: Ao aperceber-me de que me esqueci da carteira, fiquei embaraçado (Upon realizing I forgot my wallet, I got embarrassed). Nonetheless, here in Portugal we'd probably prefer "envergonhado" or "envergonhada".
      That being said, it can also mean tangled, like you mentioned: Não penteei o meu cabelo o dia todo, está embaraçado (I haven't brushed my hair all day, it's tangled).

    And the technique of watching a movie in a language with the subtitles in the same language is efficient. I could read books or even write ones but not having a single conversation!?

    That's a great idea to narrate what you are doing as you go about your day. I am a speech language pathologist and I work with preschoolers, and I have suggested this to parents many times as a great way to increase the language of their child. I don’t know why I didn't think to do it myself to learn my target languages! I have considered doing a basic daily journal, but I haven't tried this yet.

    El problema de los dos que hablan portugués es que tratan de hablar español a la misma velocidad con la que hablan en sus lenguas maternas y eso hace que se equivoquen en la pronunciación y en la gramática (cuesta entenderles un poco cuando hablan español). A mi me pasaba cuando comencé a aprender inglés (lo hice en EUA), pero luego empecé a hablar más lento y eso hizo que mejorara muchísimo más.

    As someone who also learnt Chinese from a young age, I would compare 'accepting the tones' similar to how languages with genders, like German, French, Portuguese, 'accepted the genders'. It does need lots of exposure to hearing the words that the tones become instinct when I want to say a certain word.

    As a Spoken Language Coach I totally agree: that is why I customise my teaching style according to the individual: i indeed tell them to make the language they are learning a constant part of their surroundings from books to vlogs to movies to songs to podcast and news and having the TV on in that language in the background for subconscious learning of the brain....it really works.
    Listening to the last part as they all explain mixing languages and adding words from other languages, it getting difficult to sometimes converse in any one language fully and even making mistakes is all true. Although for many years it didn't happen but now, it is happening a lot to me: switching between 2 languages even though i should be sticking to one and making mistakes in my own second language and catching it myself...it's becoming too frequent. And with French it is so much more a language i am fluent in my mind now than when i want to speak out loud mostly due to almost 2 decades of not speaking, but when i teach it I'm all fluent as if i never forgot it. So yes, speaking 4 languages fluently cannot last very long due to having to drop one or 2...i dropped 1 language that was a part of my childhood language, completely when we shifted countries and i actually have trouble understanding it when my parents or friends speak it for fun: i don't get a word now. i still remember the numbers and basic hello and the major complaint we made at school to our teachers.
    Apart from that the other 4 languages i speak, i am frequently making mistakes in both my mother tongues (yes we have 2 mother tongues the national language and the regional language), which i am aware of and catch myself, even though these are the languages i speak the most now, but my native/birth language English is one where i am still in control...although i am now recently finding it hard to remember some vocabulary, my mind shifting to all the other languages, plus a smattering of japanese, korean and thai have come into the mix and i think that is when i totally started mixing stuff up as in i have to be careful to stick to one language.
    So i get you all!!!

    Not a critic, just an observation. It's very likely they come from privileged financial families to be able to have a great education and focus on learning... It can't be public school where they had the opportunity to learn all these languages. Nothing wrong with having this privilege. That's great for them! I just wish it would be mentioned/recognized somewhere in the video. Lots of kids watching this probably wished they had the same chances. And for these I say: don't think it's your fault for not being able to advance in studies like they did.

    I find it crazy how good Miguel's accent is in German and French, he pulls it off really well, but as he mention German is his second language to be fair, it's the French pronunciation that he really pulled off well for someone who probably only really learned it in school and hasn't had much chances to practice it with people.
    Cool video, All languages that I am interested in so this was pure entertainment for me, the Indonesian girl is right, the local dialects are what throws me off as someone learning Bahasa Indonesia, but it really is a fun language to learn, my biggest mistake with it tends to be mixing the phrases and saying them in the wrong order, as a Portuguese and English native speaker I keep thinking in English when if I think more in Portuguese the order of the words will be more accurate in Bahasa Indonesia haha.
