I absolutely love the fact that you have included your children into the video production! You never know what spark of ingenuity you can give birth to in their minds. 18 years ago we gutted and remolded the house that we are in and YES our 3 children had their involvement in it to. From tearing out old sheetrock to helping update the electrical to picking out the paint. They loved it and still talk about doing it.

Hello, I just want to thank you, thank you, thank you. Our bathtub has been gurgling for years when the toilet is flushed. Today, my husband wanted to try to fix it. Used a 10 foot piece of pipe in the air vent. It hit a blockage, couldn’t go any further. When we got back in the house, we noticed our kitchen sink and bathroom sink were no longer able to drain. One would drain into the other. We tried plunging, drano, more plunging, and nothing was working. I googled for any help out there, saw your video, called my sister who has the shop vac and long hose, and about a half hour later, everything is running clear again, and no more gurgling! So, thanks again 😊. (It was a small vac, so we had to empty it 4 times. The last time the contents looked like tar!)
Get a leaf trap on it before fall! Excellent work on being persistant and congrats on your success!

That one definitely needs flushed out before you put your screening over it. The vacuum gets a good portion of material, flushing through with a hose will clear out any remaining debris. Leaving a little debris down there gives any new particles something to cling to.... That's how blockages typically start.
Wish I had the confidence to get up on my 2 story row house. I have a gut feeling the smell in my house, especially after a day or two of heavy rain is due to a partial blockage of the vent. Very impressive. I've been a single mom for some time and need to keep costs down. I'm surprised at some of the work you can tackle if you put your mind to it. Kudos to you!

Why not just get some steel screen door mesh and cut it to size, then clamp/zip tie it around the tip? It will block even the smallest leaves and bugs.
That would work also if you can buy it. Our local stores only carry plastic screen by the large roll, its plastic so it will not last, the gutter screen we used was about $2.35
LOVE the cover idea! I was thinking of putting screen on it and clamping it down, but that's much easier for 2.00.

Great job. I am trying to fix my own shower backup problem and my research was suggesting the vent. I was so happy to find your video, woman power!! I am in. I just don't have a high enough ladder, yet and my roof is more pitched but you did exactly what I was thinking;. and for the shower stall, I am hoping a plumbing bladder will work. A woman's work is never done. Besides, I like to do it myself and know that it was done right the first time.. Especially saving the plumbing fees. I like your little helpers. I wish I had some.

That's a great idea for the roof vent. However, I believe that kind of cover will be invisible to pine needles. Our home is surrounded by pine trees and some deciduous trees that even my gutter screens occasionally need to be removed to get out the pine needle buildup at the downspouts. Thank you for the video.
They do make actual vent cover for a few dollars more but this was so simple to do and store available. I hate order g online and waiting endlessly. Added one to all the down spouts this fall as one of them clogs regularly and froze causing the seam to split.
This Video is a hoot to watch but very good. Now im going on my roof.

The advice about involving the kids in repairs is on the nose! I have 4 grandsons who are unwilling to help because they don’t know how to help.

Oh boy I think I had the same problem.. I’m going onto my roof tomorrow and getting that vent cap. I’m having a problem with my kitchen and shower drain only? But it won’t hurt looking at the vent.. Ty
My house has 2 vents and this blocked one was for the lower level bathroom and laundry that did not see alot of use. It went unnoticed for a long time.. Hopefully yours will help clear your drain too. The cap is a great help, be careful.
@@mommymilestones yes I only have 1 vent. But today I cleaned the line out it’s been since bought the house in October last year so in January I’ve been working on it. It’s a summer home and I can only work on it a day or two when I’m here.. but today I got it.. I’m super happy. The neighbor told me the last 2 owners couldn’t clear it. But I’m still going to check the vent. Oh well I’ll be back in a couple of weeks and start that project. I’ll post if I got it.
That’s neat sucking out the clog. I’ve seen a video where a person used a hose to clear the vent lines.
That's the trouble with a clog, where is it going to flow when it's stopped entirely. I was a week or 2 away from a new roof and the one in the video was leaking right at the vent area. untarped it for the video. So much better now.
This helped so much, my AC unit wouldn’t drain. Come to find out the vent pipe was full of water and stopped up. Thank you

Jeez ive been digging up septic every couple weeks all winter in Tennessee .i bet this has been the problem all along .
Toilet paper shortages have caught up with them too. Disposable wipes and paper towel problems in septic.
@@mommymilestones yeah ive heard that being an issue elsewhere but not at my place .stores never ran out of toilet paper here
It may seem like a great solution to put a basket over the end of the vent stack but If you live in a climate that gets freezing temps, any restriction like that can be prone to freezing from the moist exhaust, thus blocking the venting ability. Never, never do that! And that is why vent stacks are always completely open to the atmosphere.
After passing my real-estate home Inspection done by a licensed contractor I disagree. As a lifelong Michigan resident wming multiple housing units I've seen lots of plugged vents from leaves and squirrels waste. Freezing any moisture condensation is highly unlikely.
You should have just used a hose with water. Much easier than your way.

@@mommymilestones Actually I did do that successfully in the Spring but my neighbor is having problems now so I was looking for different ways for them to do it since his water hose is frozen. He is going to try the snake since it seems to be so easy to do. Have a great day too.
I would truly recommend you get rid of that tree right next to your house if you haven't already done so.
I couldnt cut that tree down. It's sound and provides a lot of enjoyment. The truth is an empty lot looks really bad in a real estate market. The fact that there is a fireplace in the basement may help the new owners decide what to do with it. In the mean time it is part of a garden vignette and a good trimming goes a long way. When the roof was redone just after this video we were able to remove any limbs over the roof that would pose a problem in the future.
I got something hard in my vent. I can't break through. I may have to rig up some way to drill through it. I think it may be a walnut or something. I tried to bust through it and it only got stuck in there deeper.
That's where the good shop vac with extensions of hose helps. The car kit hose will fit. Tip take filter off vac for max suction.
I wish I had an easier roof. Mine is 2story so gotta get on very end of tall ladder. On a still day!🌬🌪😫yikes. No wonder the plumber never mentioned this as possible cause of problems!!!
None of it is fun but the reward is huge.
Great video..how long of vacuum hose did you use...I always use my shop vac to suck out hair clogged in bathtub drain..
2 standard hose lengths that came with my new and old shop vacuum 6 ft maybe each and the car cleaning hose which is a lot longer. Maybe 10 ft.

I wish I could do this myself but I don't have a vac. I only have a 6ft toilet auger and I don't think that will do the job 😕
@@mommymilestones Had he only watched to the end of the video, huh. smh BTW I have the same exact issue, took my snake on the roof, hit a dead end 9 ft down and bent my new cable. Filled the stack with water, sent the snake back down, now its clogged and water wont even go down. I hooked my shop vac up with my reducer to and it fits perfectly in the hole of the stack where it reduces to 1.5" tried to suck it out and nothing. Water amazingly still in there and I have a brand new powerful shop vac, im at a loss. I guess I'm going to add a vent under my kitchen sink and see if that will help get things flowing. My kitchen sink is straight above my washing machine that is in the basement, for the past 2 months when the washing machine drains in the slop sink, the water comes up through my floor drain in the basement and makes a huge mess. I sure would love to know what changed in the past 2 months. I have 3 different size snakes, I've snaked every drain in my house. The only thing I can not get through is my roof vent. So im bypassing that and adding a vent above my p trap under my sink and see if that will get water under the bridge again. If not I'm gonna talk really dirty to it, so dirty my wifey may divorce me. I'm breaking out the power tools and some other kinky stuff! Bahahahaha Hey ya have to make light of this nonsense! Life is too short. I leave you with this, What did 1 saggy boob say to the other? If we do not get some support around here soon, people will think we are nuts!! LOLOLOL I do not care who you are, that is funny right there!!! If you don't laugh at that, I best run!!
my vent pipe has a cap, but I do hear gurgling from the bathtub drain...is there another way to clean out that vent pipe?
If the cap is glued you need to cut it off with a hacksaw or sawzall. it is connected to the plumbing in the basement but it is all glued together generally without a cleanout. I saw this on an episode of this old house awhile back. Maybe he mentions a vent basement cleanout other than the main for waste water.

I am so shocked that a lot of plumbers have no clue when you explain them plumbing vents. They are always looking for snake auger drain cleaning and other non-connected stuff. When it comes to gurgling noise coming out of the sink, most probably its the plumbing vent issue.
There are not built like roofers for a reason. In my area they want to work in the a/c and run snakes first with out looking in the vent for the obvious.

I thought it was the roof vent after researching online to be sure.
I had to repeatedly call a plumber over many years, for the same problem and all they ever would say was that it was clogged between the bathroom and kitchen (kitchen sink etc was never clogged itself.
MY AIRVENTS ON MY ROOF ARE QUARTER SIZE, HOW IS YOUR HOLE SO BIG
Ours are 1950"s original to the home build and standard for our area. Pvc may be smaller. Smaller may be a problem in venting.
