I literally was like the Leonardo Dicaprio meme wislting at the TV and pointing. The whole layout with them transitioning from Les Miserable' into this was a great segway. Singing a french revolutionary war song about beheading aristocrats while performing on the side of the place where Marie Antionette was held and sentanced with a pyro budget that would make Disney envious.. Absolutely Majestic.. Also that guy carrying the touch who was bouncing thru the city and overlooking was Arno from Assassings Creed as the game developer is from France. Thought that was a nice little touch.
The spirit of metal lives again before the eyes of the world with GOJIRA at the Olympic Games 2024. Thank you to them and their unique performance who have embellished this music.
The red ribbons shot out at the end represent the blood of Marie Antoinette being spilled after being decapitated by the people in the French Revolution. Marie was a queen who basically went around spending vast amounts of money on herself, instead of giving it to the people. Metal. AS FUCK.
Magnifique et historique, cette partie d'une ouverture de JO!! Dommage que vous n'ayez pas compris les symboles de ce morceau, qui sont tellement si puissants. Mais on vous adore avec la petite famille. :)
This was so cool! The memes have been awesome too, lol. I was watching an interview with Mario and he was talking about how it was a challenge to keep it a secret for so long. He said they had a lot freedom to do what they wanted with the music, but everything else was already planned out for the ceremony
This is right up there with a Rammstein performance. Also, the commentator that came in at the end was Kelly Clarkson. I heard her full commentary and it seemed like she was blown away. I guess the opera singer is also a metal head.
The coat of arms of Paris represents a nave (a boat) sailing in the wind, floating on water (the Seine). It is surmounted by a headband (the head of the shield) dotted with golden lily flowers. The motto is Fluctua nec mergitur (beaten by the waves but not dark).
Have you also noticed the American singer Lady Gaga perfectly singing in French in a very unusual piece in the same ceremony, in a totaly different genre (the revue) ?
That was Kelly Clarkson lol... she was a little annoying at first, but it's because she absolutely loved it. A ton of people did. On that Monday, their listener count on Spotify was 1.3M. After the performance on Friday it was 2.3M. Last Monday it was 2.6M... I just checked again now, 8/7/24 at 5:21pm MST... they're at 3M.

Mario (the drummer) has recently been interviewed on video speaking about Gojira being at the Olympics. He talks about all kinds of stuff that people probably have questions about. It's on Brut America's RUclips channel. 👍
Ca représentait bien la Révolution Française, très violente, très sanglante, mais lyrique. C'est ce qui nous a apporté la liberté, l'égalité, et la fraternité, avec à la base, un chant révolutionnaire à cappella, qui a unit la foule
This is awesome! Loved watching this during the opening ceremony, I couldn’t believe it. Closest metal I ever remember being used in Olympics was 2002 Salt Lake City Games opening ceremony when they used A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater. It wasn’t a live performance either, so this is light years forward! They killed it too man!
Was watching live and forgot Gojira were to play part of the opening ceremony, blew me away, so freaking cool to see Gojira and Heavy Metal represented world wide at last, not the usual focus on pop and hip hop; the live mix wasn't perfect but it was a one shot thing so they couldn't really rehearse that.
If you didnt ever hear of Gojira, now you have, check out their other albums, theyre fricken great, gives me chills listening to them, absolutely the best band ever,EVER
I remember that I was impressed/happy when part of Firestarter by The Prodigy was played during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, but having a hard/heavy band actually perform at the opening ceremony is something else.
I agree for the vocals, we will have to accept his use of layering. His voice can’t keep up, and indeed the mix in itself was also very low, just like Fortitude.. i hope they go the Tool route and have us a great more instrumental minded album. Filled with heavy groovy riffs like they did in the early 2000’s.
Gojira sang "ha ça ira!" ("it will be fine") a song from the French Revolution (1789/1799) the song and the show made reference to the fact that French freedom was unfortunately acquired in the blood and beheading of the king and his queen and the Aristocrats and all anti-revolutionaries. Here we can see Marie-Antoinette, le Queen, beheaded. She was prisoner in the "castle" called the Conciergerie before being executed. It was also a reference to the Bataclan terrorist attacks in 2015, "it will be fine" : we will not let it happen. I would like to point out that it was not a question of advocating the Guillotine either, every French person finds it absolutely horrible that the Queen was beheaded. Here it was a question of symbolizing that the roots of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, were drawn from internal struggles and violence, unfortunately. Hence the famous "Mea Culpa" in the lyrics of the Gojira song. And to emphasize this, the shows involve a boat, symbol of Paris with its motto in Latin "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" (sail but never sink) which means that we will not sink and that we will fight for our freedoms and their maintenance. Art is subjective so everyone can see what he wants. But this show refers to Liberty.
You know that those words “ça ira, ça ira” were said in an approximate French by Benjamin Franklin, at the Congress of the 13 American colonies in Paris, around 1785. He was talking about the American independence war. Talking to the French. They used those words and created the song that became the emblem of the French Revolution that started in 1789.
That beheaded character at the beginning was Marie Antoinette, and the building where the band is playing at is the Place de la Concorde, where she and thousands of others were beheaded, which is fucking metal.
The closest to a heavy band playing at an Olympics before this was the winter olympics in Vancouver 2010. Nickelback performed "burn it to the ground" at the closing ceremony.
This was without a doubt the BEST of the opening of the Olympic Games and this band making Metal stand out. This band was already known to metal lovers for their great activism, their lyrics, their simpolism, everything, and with this presentation they broke the INTERNET. For me, the charm of Gojira lies in how genuine they are, they do not want to pose as "bad", in addition to the archetype of their lyrics about real problems, and not about mutilations, murders, nuclear winters or things like that that are a constant of the gender. Added to all this is an enormous technique of interpretation, composition and a real and artistic declaration of principles, similar to bands like Tool, Mastodon, Soen, Devin Townsend Project/Strapping Young Lad or Meshuggah.
