Scofield has always had a way of sounding absolutely masterful and kind of carelessly dirty and sloppy *at the same time.* (The same goes for a lot of the musicians he has played with.) It is a very "special" style and It actually used to irritate me, but somehow I've grown to love it more and more. Now I can't get enough...
the music is in the moment, they count on skill, chops, inspiration, only the heads are worked out and even then probably just briefly......I know what you mean, I like it, too...when guitars are too clean and rehearsed it sort of annoys me...I dig Sco....I just saw Julian Lage play, he has that careless yet genius streak as well
Expressiveness over sterility. When you play on the edge, spontaneously, connected to the moment and what you’re feeling it sounds exciting. Listening to someone execute their carefully practiced licks is incredibly boring no matter how skilled they may be. Jimmy Page is another “sloppy” monster albeit in a very different way.
Papá Scofield con sus nenos... Genial! Así le fue a este increible trio. A la altura de lo que parieron Miles Davis o Chic Corea en sus generosas existencias. Chapeau por los maestros que no se guardan nada.... y su estela!!!!
So true. I don't know if you are into rock too, but I found this really new band called RED CAN and glad I did. The first listen was wierd cause it's different but at the same time sounds like many great bands. But with a second listen i was in. Seriously I'm so excited to see them grow. Cheers!
This is one of the best shows I've seen in a while. Thank you for posting this. I'm getting to be a pretty big Scofield fan, but all these guys are killer.
I really love what these guys are doing together. It's got all the great jazz qualities, but there's always a groove that's easy to feel/follow. Sometimes bebop loses me. They get so far out there I can't even find the "one!" There are always moments for that, but this is a perfect blend of the palatable groove and the "out there."
45 years of guitar. Hard core rock and shredding. But, when I wanna be schooled, I'll come here. I'd love to compare myself to John...I have a goatee, my hair is falling out and I have shoes that look like his...that's about it. Unbelievable stuff.
Awesome, in fact this is probably the best recording of MSMW I have heard. Just saw this at Playboy jazz fest last year, and it was good, but not as good as this. Amazing the size of those "dinosaur" cameras! Now we are all using gimbals and tiny 4K mirrorless cameras, and this wasn't that long ago either!
Wow...Talk about precision that swings! Really interesting guitar approach with crazy (in the best way) keys... The down home feel of some of the keys work makes one think of a busker from another universe...
Yes that part was my favorite. But do you now the name of the song? Im kind of a newbie at jazz and I like more the studio versions so i want to look for that version better. Thanks buddy.
Does anybody know what the machine Scofield is sampling his guitar from at 23:30ish is called (with the foot buttons)? It's not just a looping machine, right?
34:50 to 35:10 … anyone know what Scofield is playing there? Is he quoting some melody? Or is that all an improvised line? It’s so sick I can’t even believe it.
This is hilarious to me, because the audience is all calmly glued to their seats. I've seen dozens of MMW shows, starting in about 1993, in venues as small as bars with 150ppl. Only one set of shows didn't have the entire crowd dancing their ass off, gettin down. It was all the hippie kid jam band scene a their shows. The shows I mention where people weren't dancing the whole show was at a symphony venue in Atlanta where they had specifically said before the show that it was going to be a more quiet and serious kind of thing. So the audience respected that. Same hippie kids, just sitting back chillin, smoking endless clouds of the dank.
28:01 Scofield has a mean BoSS face. I love/respect/encourage/promote jazz music and all these talented musicians. Jazz is all you have left after the blues feels too soft...

Leonid, hi! Yes, this is great, sure! As you are interested in music, drop me a line - sergei[at]nterda[dot]com. I record jazz in ultra-hi-res DSD128 format here in London and the collection is over 100 concerts now. I did not manage to record J.S. last year's London show but tomorrow Marc Ribot's concert should be added to the catalogue. I am organising to stream it all in true hi-res (FLAC 24-bit/192 kHz) via OraStream in Singapore and if all is well, the collections' albums and tracks will be online to stream and download when purchased. The Hendrix's tribute show is planned too for the end of spring to celebrate his 75th Birthday Anniversary (it was on 27th Nov. 17) and raise funds to commission a bronze statue to Hendrix for London. A DSD256 recording is planned and streaming is being planned too. In any case, it would be good to hear from you. S.
big time favourite!! extraordinary music, players, audio capture and camera work!

I think it is a perfect set, the best thing to absolutly discover with the Hudson concert in 2018 and Miles isle of wight 1970
Competition for who can play behind the beat the coolest. Everyone wins. Awesome.
cause it don't mean a thang if it aint got dat swang
Yes, yes yes
And a friendly one at that, no one being too busy and stepping on anyone’s toes, the best
best live-performance since 40 years

what other musicians are you referring to specifically in terms of being masterful & sloppy?

to me he sounds like a horn player with that "carelessly dirty and sloppy" style
This is how I have always felt about Jimmy Page's playing. It feels like he's ruining the show by dragging but he's playing perfectly for the vibe.
Expressiveness over sterility. When you play on the edge, spontaneously, connected to the moment and what you’re feeling it sounds exciting. Love Billy Martin physically panning his percussion/bells between the overheads.
He cares about both sides of the audience.
THAT is professionalism!

I found their vintage t shirt and had to hear what kind of music they play. I like it.

I detect shades of Frank Zappa here and there. Love it! :)
clearly a classic
Magicians at work. Sublime is an understatement!
Phenomenal. Love these cats, since early 2000s.

Unbelievable...as usual. And Sco is absolutely boundless in imagination, fearless, adventurous and tasteful. And funky as fook as well!
this is the jazz equivalent of snake charmers. they memorize each other to a trance like state

Scofield checking his watch at 5:15, didn't want to miss the free buffet.
