What Foods Do Compost Worms Break Down Fastest? Vermicompost Worm Farm

  • It is surprising which foods red wigglers break down the quickest as they turn food scraps & cardboard/paper shredding into natural fertilizer & soil amendments in the form of worm castings for your garden!! Broccoli, lettuce stalks, strawberry tops, peppers, banana peels & apples all get the test as I try to categorize each food into fast and slow foods for this compost worm bin experiment.
    In this video I also revisit the last feeding to include the bag of raspberries & I run into one of the biggest worm balls I have encountered in any of my bins! We are recovering from 2 freezing nights here in Florida and my overfeeding of the Outdoor Worm Bin seemed to keep them worm judging from how many I found deep in the last feeding zone.
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

    Thank you so much for putting up the temperature in Celsius as well. I’m new to worm farming and I’ve learned so much from you, AVand Ann at Plant obsessed. I love feeding day when I can floof up my worms and check in on them. I have a mixed bin of ENCs and red wigglers. Plus a very small bin of red wigglers. I’ve already managed to film a cocoon hatching much to the fascination of my family. I really like the idea of this bin and when things warm up here in the Uk I think my mixed bin might get transferred to this system in the garden.

      Thank you so much!! AV and Plant Obsessed are absolutely fantastic channels!!! That is so cool you’ve caught a cocoon hatching on video!!! I think putting some or all of your mix population in a similar bin to this will work great!! This bin can consume so much food, they have plenty of room to expand the population and I love being able to take castings from it every week!! Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know about your worm bin set ups! Keep us updated when/if you decide to go with a bin like this!!🪱🪱🪱

    I chuckled to myself when you said that there were two big freezes and then showed the temperatures of 31 and 35.
    I understand that is unusually cold for your location, but if you want to experience the real *big freeze* come visit me or Ann at plant obsessed or WhyteDavy gardening.
    (Although I'm the only one of those I just mentioned that keeps their worms outside in this extreme cold, the others bring them in or heat them)
    My outdoor worms have been buried under snow and ice and are in temperatures down to -10°F. (-30° with wind chill factored in) for weeks. They are certainly cccccold!🥶
    But as in every other year they're going to be alive and thriving when spring rolls around.
    So..... if you hear your worms complaining about the temperature, just threaten to send them to Connecticut 😂 And they will quiet right down.
    Great update. Your worms and the bin look really good.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад

      😂🤣😂 I do feel bad when I complain because I know so many of you are under mountains of snow & freezing temps!! Even though I grew up in FL and am back, I lived in North Dakota & Washington state for 6 years total. Still, I will say, I get colder in Florida because we don’t dress for it correctly. We go out of the house in shorts and a t-shirt on freezing mornings because we know it will be 75 degrees 3 hour later😂 Are your polar bearish outdoor worms red wigglers? That is pretty amazing they can survive the snow pack!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Well you didn't really complain 🙃🤗, Just stated the facts as they are. I have a friend in Kissimmee and if it gets to 60°she's freezing and puts a sweater on at 60° here, I'm in shorts and barefoot. I guess it's climatization - we all get used to our own conditions. Whatever the weather is, those were some very happy healthy looking worms

    Apart from the extra food warming up the bin during the cold spell, the other benefit is that now you now the food range that you can feed your worms.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад

      Yes! I was surprised they were still consuming food when the temperature dropped! It heats up pretty good during the day so I think the average temperature helps them. They are really consuming a lot of food scraps, I can’t imagine how much more it will be in the spring time!! Thanks so much for all your help and for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱

    I dream of having that many worms in one of my bins!By the way, berries don’t have as much sugar in them as we think. I put blueberries in one time and the worms took their time, too.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      That’s a good point! I put a bag with lettuce in one time and they went crazy for it eating everything thing in there in no time, but I have noticed blackberries taking a while. Now that you mentioned it, I suspect these raspberries will be the same! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch & pass on that tip!!!🪱🪱🪱

    Wow that’s amazing. Love that huge ball o worms. I’ve noticed that your worms don’t climb the walls. Mine do all the time. Is that a problem?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      Thank you!! In this outdoor bin I’ll get an occasional worm along the sides because I fold the top over on itself. I rarely see one on the walls of the tiny bin and the vermihut does get some worms exploring the sides when I lift the lid since it is a moist closed system. If you have a lid on your bin and it is just a few occasionally that is normal because the sides are moist and the worms are curious. If you don’t have a lid, the sides should be dry and the worms will avoid it unless there is a something bothering them in the bedding like anaerobic conditions. If you see a lot gathered at the top clinging to the lid, then there is almost certainly conditions they don’t like down below…heat, fermentation etc. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!🪱🪱🪱

    993rd subscriber reporting for duty! Fun channel. Anyways, where do you keep your bag throughout the spring/summer and have you had any problems with fire ants/ants in general? Thanks!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      😀Thank you so much for the 993rd subscription!!! Definitely the most memorable!! I keep this worm bin/bag directly on the ground in some sporadic shade near a cluster of palm trees in my back yard. It does get some direct sun for a couple hours on top but I have a couple of buckets against the side to prevent to much direct heat. I try to peak in the top at least every other day which keeps the ants away, but if I go a full week sometimes I get ants trying to hide their eggs/larvae in the folds of the top. They have never fed on the worms, but I’ll get an occasional baby frog or small lizard hiding away. It has worked out great for almost 2 years so far!! Thank again for subscribing!! I really appreciate it 993!!!🪱🪱🪱

    This is what I have been looking forward to watch 😀 especially what happened with the raspberries. I like it when you sound happy to see them all together. I get use to watching them now that I even enjoyed it while having my breakfast 😅. I started watching your videos last night. I took a few days break from YT as I experienced a mild effect of my 3rd covid vaccine. I saw & I'm glad you already harvested. Now you have red wrigglers & blue worms. I'm curious, are you doing this as a hobby or in connection with your profession?

This is a hobby and a way for me to get free natural fertilizer, keep as much of my waste out of the landfills & it fulfills my real passion which is in the biological sciences!! • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      I cut back one of them and the center is still pushing up so I’m hopeful. Another one has green on the bottom of the leaf trying to push through so I’m gonna wait to see if it can make it before I slice the top off. The 3rd one has green bananas on it so I’m hopeful it will ripen a little more before I harvest them. I also have 2 other trees in big pots that were saved by bring ing them in. If I lived 100 miles further south I’d have bananas all the time no problem!!

    Not sure if putting a plastic bag in was a good idea. I believe you'd have a better and more oxygenated experience without it.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      I think you are right about the lack of oxygen. I also may have inadvertently made a dry shredded cardboard barrier that they didn't feel like getting around since other food was abundant. I don't normally put the bags in; it was just an experiment to see what will happen. I tried it once before with shredded lettuce leaves and they went right in and took care of it so this was a bit of a surprise. Thanks so much for watching and making a very good point about the lack of much oxygen!!🪱🪱🪱

    I guess if you wanted to poison a self sufficient portion of the population. You could poison ink and push newspaper composting. 😂😂😂. I just dont see the point.best case it just dilutes your product

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  3 месяца назад

      😂🤣😂 Inks now a days are soy based, but point taken! Surprisingly compost worms are used to clean up toxic soils...just don't eat the worms after!! I agree, for the best vermicompost or worm castings use straight from the forest or garden material, but I also like to eliminate my waste products! Why you wear 1 glove, instead of 2 gloves? I think its better you wear both or wear nothing at all 🤔🤣

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      Great question!! I only wear a glove on my right hand because that is the hand I dig down into the bin with. Without a glove the castings get under my fingernails & it looks kinda gross to me on the videos. I usually only place things on my left hand so my fingernails don't get dirty and I don't need a glove on that hand. I also reuse the gloves until they break so only wearing one saves on the total number of gloves I use. You are right it does look a little odd, but there is a method to my madness😀!! Thanks so much for watching and for the great question I'm sure a lot of people also have!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      Not to worry, they are left alone for 99.9% of their lives as I’m only in the bin once every 7-8 days for 10 minutes! Luckily compost worms are amazingly resilient little creatures who fair much worse in the wild as they are hunted by many mammals, reptiles, amphibians & other creatures! They do not attempt to flee my bins and are thriving!! I mostly dig around the bins to makes sure there are no pockets of anaerobic activity and to make sure no critters have made a home in their bin! They produce an amazing amount of castings for my garden!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch! I appreciate your feedback!!🪱🪱🪱
