    Start transforming your food & cardboard/paper waste into natural organic fertilizer with compost worms! The results are incredible! In this video I'll show you how I manage my 1 1/2 year old Urban Worm Bag & show you how I am adjusting my worm bin maintenance as the temperatures get warmer in the summer.
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 4 worm composting bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 4 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / @vermicompost

    Executive producers are always right!!!
    Had you waited for 30 days, most of the paper would have been gone too.
    This is a great example how to maximize production, without overfeeding and turning your worm bin into a stinking mess.
    I wonder how much variation in temperatures if any are in that bin, worms always seem to find the sweet spot. I will find worms in my hot compost when I flip, even when the core temps are in the 130F range.
    My poor worms are still in the basement, I am a bad worm Papa. Hope to get them outside this week, they need a good walk, lol.

    I put a bunch of watermelon in my bin, and it got too wet. I ended up getting pot worms. I collected whatever casting I could because they were so wet, then put a bunch of cardboard to dry things up. That shredder has come in handy. I finally got a good look at the life in there. Worms at all stages. Eggs, cocoons, baby worms, adults and some Fat daddy nightcrawlers. There are the pot worms which isn't ideal, but it'll sort itself out. There's Rove beetles and the winged ones. There are predator mites in there. I added my rock dust grit, a dash of mosquito bits and some diatomaceous earth. Growing in Real Living soil now!

    Hi Patrick, we find worms all over the surface of our compost pile when it goes through a thermophilic cycle. Maybe they are up there because the air above is cooler than the bedding material? Anyway, one caution I found in my worm science research is that baby worms cannot survive the same high temperatures as adults, which may affect reproduction in your bin. I was going to suggest a half side feeding and then you did it!
    ~ Sandra

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад +1

      I definitely think they are attracted to the cooler temps and especially the moisture that condenses around those water bottles. I'm glad you mentioned about the babies...I saw 3 expired smaller worms on the top of the paper towels after about 3 days...it was most likely babies that made their way up there and kind of got stuck in the maze of paper towels all matted together and over heated. Even though I know it is coming, summer always hits me like a baseball bat with regard to heat and moisture in my worm bins!! Yep, I finally tried the side feeding!! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi Patrick and Autumn, I can't believe how much food you can put in your UWB. I've been over feeding my worm tower recently with frozen foods, resulting in too much moisture and too many pot worms. Lessons to learn, I guess. So now in the process of drying it out a little to get things back to where I like it. Have fun, Mark : )

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад +1

      Yep, pot worms are one of my early indicators I've been over feeding! I can see them real well in my Tiny Worm Bin when I do that since my face is so close to it when I feed it. It is definitely a fine line between over feeding & running worm bins at peak efficiency, luckily a little extra bedding and a skipped feeding seem to do the trick for me! This UWB is a beast...It really swallows up food and bedding quick!! I wish I knew exactly how many worms I have in here...it could be twice as many as I think!! Thanks so much for watching Mark!!🪱🪱🪱

    Your thermometer readings prompted me to check my local extended forecast to see what we've got in store over the next couple weeks and it looks like we're also in store for some over-90° days next week. Somehow it feels too early for a heat wave! I guess you guys are used to it - and your wormies sure don't seem to mind either. Although you has some leftovers, it looks like the system made nice progress on what was fed. Its always so satisfying to see the amount of food that people put into their CFTs. Makes me wonder why I don't do the same..... :)

      It gets hot early but never crazy hot; we rarely if even see 100℉...but we'll be hot until November. There really is no garden to speak of for the next 2 months other than peppers, so we kind of swap your winter of no growing with our summer of no growing. I feel like I push the limits of my CFT like you do with your bus bin worm bins, but we swap limits as I feed my 2 inside bins less than they are probably capable of like your CFT😂 Thanks so much for watching AV!!🪱🪱🪱

      That's a great question! I'm not sure if the relatively smaller surface area keeps the heat in or if the deepness of the UWB helps to have a variety of temperatures for them to migrate to??!? What kills me is where I have to have it placed...on the west side of my porch...I'd love to have it on the North side, but that's my front yard!! Good info about how you're treating it differently during summer. My Executive Producer also wants our UWB to be outside, so mine is in a shady spot buy it will get into the mid 90's during summer. Have you tried bubble wrap on top to help retain moisture or do you avoid that for heat purposes? I did weekly feeds smaller to keep from heating too much in summmer. Mine is crunchy at the bottom as well, but i haven't harvested yet. Look forward to seeing another harvest by you!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад +1

      😂🤣😂 When we go on trips in the summer she lets me bring it inside and I always wait until she tells me to get it out of the house before I bring it back outside!! Our Executive Producers are the bosses after all! I haven't tried bubble wrap but I do see condensation on the inside top of the lid so I think it does a decent job at retaining moisture but nothing like my VermiHut. Honestly I think weekly feedings or even once a day, get rid of a little food scraps in it as you go is probably the way to go for the high temps in the summer. I do find mine heats up more over the food, if I pile it up, on days 2-4. Hopefully I will be harvesting in next video! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch and commiserating about having to keep our UWBs outside!!🪱🪱🪱

      It's funny, It wasn't until I left it to sit for almost 3 months that the bottom got so dry...every harvest before that wasn't too bad at all. I think with my previous, more regular harvesting schedule, it didn't have time to get bone dry in that bottom first part. But now it is crunchy down there again much quicker...almost as if I need a rehydration in the whole bin??!? Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & share your experience Cheryl!!🪱🪱🪱
