    The egg shells may be being broken down by acid as well. Calcium carbonate dissolves in moderately acidic conditions. It's a great ph buffer and if you overdose it, it's just more grit for the worms. I use chalk

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад

      I had not thought about that! That would be fascinating if that was what was helping the worms with all the grit...because it just does not seem like they could possibly be going through it so fast!! What kind of chalk do you use? Like from a chalk board or the kind gymnasts use or is there some way to buy it in a different form? Do you think they use it as grit as well? I get lots of questions about different things to use for grit besides egg shells. Thanks for passing on the info & thanks so much for stopping by to watch Christian!!🪱🪱🪱

    So i have been following this channel for quite a long time now and around 6 weeks back i got my first worm hotel that i am very proud of its a 4 layer hotel.
    The package came with some instructions that i followed but im noticing quite a lot of moisture is building up within the tower, on the bottom part i found quite a few disolved worms its moist but there is no sitting water on the bottom so im not quite sure why they disolved also a bunch of red termites were sitting on the bottom empty tray so i washed those off. I only had a single feeding tray on top since this was advised by the company that delivered the hoteL.
    Today i decided it was time to do something about the moisture problem, since i do not have micro shredder yet i decided to use dry peat moss on my 2 bottom trays[innoculation trays] then have a empty tray that will become the pre harvest tray and then have my active feeding tray on top, the package came with a hennep fiber mat to keep the moisture inside but i have decided to get rid of that thing since it makes it almost impossible for the moisture to evaporate.
    Do you think this will help the bin or was adding peatmoss to the innoculating trays a bad idea and should i switch to dry cococoir?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you for your long time support!! Congrats on your worm hotel!! What you are experiencing is pretty normal as you tweak your worm tower to find the perfect way to run it in your climate conditions (temperature & humidity outside or in your home). Compost worms are pretty curious creatures so they most likely went exploring down below and couldn't get back up. The mites you saw down with them we probably there to dispose of the dead worms. The only way I have found to keep the worms from going down there is to have the bottom 2 or 3 trays be filled with dry bedding so that their path to the basin is very inhospitable. The great thing about that, as you know, is the dry bedding also becomes inoculated with microbe filled liquid that seeps from the top feeding tray! Peatmoss is just fine to use in your innoculating trays and with each feeding, but I prefer to use what I have around the house for free. You can use coco coir as well but it is even more expensive in the stores around me. When you do get a 12 sheet cross cut micro shredder it will be a game changer for you & your worm tower!! You can also use leaves but they may bring in some unwanted pests!! I think you are doing very well with your new setup and the way you have made adjustments for moisture so keep it up!! Overtime you will have that worm hotel running at peak efficiency!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Your smelling of the stinky carrot happened out of view of the camera... so I'm not sure if you took a direct whiff, or if you used the safer method they teach in chemistry class - which is to waft the odor in the direction of your nose rather than taking a direct sniff. I usually try to use the latter approach to avoid getting overwhelmed :) Looking forward to seeing how the wormies do with those yummy foods left for them out on the top surface!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад

      Thank you for the kind words!! I started this VermiHut 3 & a half years ago. The bottom tray on the system makes 19 trays that have run through it (it came with 5, I use one as a sifter and always have 4 on it, but recycle the trays back on to the system each time one is harvested). I think the age of the system and the build up of a good microbiome is what makes it run so well! No way I could feed this much right from the start, but it wasn't too long after that we got used to each other and it was off to the races! In my experience a 6 month old worm bin has been through enough cycles to have a fantastic microbiome but it continues to get better with age! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Месяц назад +2

      That's a great question Laura! I have a spread sheet I created with several auto functions that update the number of days since last feeding, age of bin, age of each tray, number of feedings since last harvest etc. All I have to do is put the date I fed and it does all the rest. I also add little notes about the bins and rewatch the previous video to prepare for the next feeding & video. It makes it really easy to do when you take pictures and video of each feeding...If I forget to input the date I fed, I just look back at the date of the video, input it in my spreed sheet and it calculates all the other info! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      Generally nothing since they are present in small quantities in almost all worm bins. But if their populations get so big that I can see them right away it usually means I am overfeeding. So what I do in that case is skip a feeding and add more dry bedding to try to lessen the conditions that caused their population to bloom. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

I wasn’t sure if they eventually go away on their own in the harvested castings. I was planning to use the castings in my grow bags and raised beds. @SaladVision Yet you felt it necessary to spend your time coming over here and saying...what? I'm not anonymous. This is a business account. You can look me up and find my exact address if you cared. Also You can say Crapping you aren't a 5 year old anymore. I'm allowed to vent my opinions. I hate click bait titles. I hate how everyone says they are doing something without saying any info at all in the title. I literally have blocked dozens of great RUclips channels because of this moronic trend. It is no different than trying to scam someone. I'm sorry my opinion got you all jazzed up but this is not a personal attack on you. Handle it man.
