I am absolutely amazed how well a mature worm bin does when left with enough moisture and bedding! You are right, red wigglers are the most forgiving in my opinion!! Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
Hello, very glad to see you back to your Vermi-hut. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your videos as someone who is just getting in to vermiculture, so very informative and honestly relaxing. I'm about a month in with the tower and have had my Urban Worm bag set up for a couple weeks and the worms should arrive within the next few hours. So thanks for your videos.
Thank you Norm!! I'm so glad you like our videos; we really appreciate the kind words and feedback! I'm so excited for you to get your worms up and running in your UWB!! I really enjoy both those worm bins and how quick the population grows in them! You are going to have soooo many worm castings coming up in a few months and they will just keep on coming!! Thanks so much for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick, Your worms are looking good. Reset and ready for another season of producing Castings. I'm glad your shoulder is almost back to 💯 ❤ ❤Peggy❤
Hello Peggy!! I was running low on castings after building 3 garden beds at the end of January, so I am loving how full my storage containers are getting! I love how my worms are always working, even when I am not!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks AV! Yes, I've been a really bad worm dad! The rotations are so hard to film so I ended up putting it off and then I got caught short with my shoulder surgery. Every so often I'd throw a napkin and some lettuce or a banana peel in, but never dug through it.
Glad all is well in the health department. My bin is 6 months old and weighs over 50lbs😱😱. The top 2 trays are all castings.... All the drip trays are castings. It's great that I need about all of that for planting in the next 5 days. Thanks again for the info. I'm glad this channel motivated me to get the Vermihut started. All my plants thank you, good sir 👍🌱🍄🪴🌼
That is fantastic!! I love having lots of castings on hand! Yes, the VermiHut can get heavy with all of those rich castings. It's amazing how fast they pile up after the system really gets going! I'm so glad we helped motivate you to get started with your VermiHut! It is so fun to feed your garden with your food scraps that have been processed by your worms!! Thanks so much for watching and for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱
I hope your shoulder continues to heal well. Thanks for the update on the bin. It makes me feel better that if I happen to neglect the worms because of unexpected reasons, most of them will survive. 😁
Thank you!! Yes, a little benign neglect is just fine if the have ample bedding & moisture! Life gets in the way sometimes!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!🪱🪱🪱
I was pretty amazed how well they did without my "help." I think the excess bedding and moisture had a lot to do with it! Thanks so much for watching Joe!!🪱🪱🪱
I have been watching all of your videos on RUclips on the television. The television does not give me an option to like or subscribe. So I went to my phone just so I could tell you how much I appreciate, and enjoy your videos you have helped me a lot, and my Vermicompost experience.
Oh wow!! Thank you so much for making the extra effort to like & subscribe!! That really helps the channel out to let RUclips know to show it to more people! I'm so glad our videos have helped out!! We really appreciate your support! Thanks so much for watching & taking the time to leave such a nice comment!!🪱🪱🪱
Fortunately, worms are pretty forgiving, as long as they do not dry out. I have been harvesting one of the 50 gal grow bag bins, so far 2, 5 gal buckets full, perhaps 2/3rds the way done, need to do the final harvest with a downward migration. The castings in the top 2 trays looks fantastic. Sure the worms missed you, I could hear them all yelling YAY!!!! Papa's back! Stay Well!!! Hope the shoulder is improving.
My poor worms have been having to do a lot of forgiving lately😂 That's a fantastic haul out of castings you got!! I've been starting to build up my supplies again with all these harvests I've been doing lately! Shoulder is doing better and better everyday! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch Brian!!🪱🪱🪱
I think I have fallen into a time warp, I have noticed that my bins are a bit being ignored as well. Yours did a fantastice jobe staritng on the pure cardboard. I can't wait till my garden is in full swing. Have a great day, glad to see you all healed up.
I was real surprised how worked over that tray with just pure dry cardboard was...kinda reminded me of your basin in your worm farm 360. Unfortunately my garden is winding down for the summer months...kinda of our no grow months like your winters. Thanks so much for stopping by Mikko!!🪱🪱🪱
Awesome!! Yep, worms are pretty resilient as long as they have some extra bedding to feed on if you miss a feeding or three 😄 My reset is going extremely well and I just finished getting my VermiHut back to it's normal tray rotation: ruclips.net/video/O6euDpELXQU/видео.html Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Great timing for this video as i have a can o worms style bin so I will definitely be using some of your tips to start the bin when I get organised. Looks totally full of castings 😮😁 👌🙏💪🪱😁 Your mum loves that shredder💃👌
In a perfect world where the Executive Producer lets me have as many worm bins as I want I'd have a Can O' Worms as well...and I'd be building something like your mammoth worm bin in my backyard😀 Yes, my mom absolutely loves that shredder which has helped me immensely with that chore!! She has lots of energy!! Thanks so much for stopping by Nick!!🪱🪱🪱
Don't tell me about those people who don't want to eat bread crust. My wife's the same. 😏 Been neglecting my bins a bit, too. Got to get back to it. 😅 Cheers Pat, have a great weekend!
😂🤣😂 Yep, it's my son's fiance' but ironically he used to not eat crust when he was little as well. Luckily, even with a little neglect, our worm bins bounce back quickly!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!! Have a great weekend as well Thomas!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick and Autumn, great video. Those castings look very good. Your garden is going to be very happy. Enjoyed the time lapse. Are you sure that was a squirrel, or was it you nibbling at the edges while your shoulder was healing. Have fun, Mark : )
I'll tell you, it might have been me...that's how stir crazy I was going!! 😂 I was super happy with the castings it produced in my negligence/absence! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Mark!!🪱🪱🪱
Awesome reset Patrick. This is a great system that really runs well with minimal inputs. I think that will be a great harvest with combining the two trays 😁🪱
Thanks Rick! Ya, I love how easy it is to run our VermiHuts!! What I experienced definitely shows that we can be filling up our trays with bedding each time we feed because they sure do knock down the volume as they devour it along with the food! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your excellent VermiHut videos over on your channel as well!!🪱🪱🪱
I want to add more worms to my VermiHut. Working with a budget I plan to add about 100-200 worms every week or 2 for a couple of months. I added 1000 new worms to an 18-gallon 500-1000 worm bin a year ago and most of them ran away. Will you do a video where you add a few (100-200) new worms to an established VermiHut? Thanks! I really love how easy you make it look!
I started my Tiny Traveling Worm Bin ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV09y9X94Q4aNpNzwUoLoVXug with 50-100 worms and after 5 months it was up to about 500 and then steadily 1,000 after each harvest to due to reaching its carrying capacity. I think if you start with 100-200 every week for a couple months or even just 1 month you will be in great shape. Your experience is very interesting because the worms usually would not flee an established bin with compost worms already in it. With a tote that tall sometimes carbon dioxide can get trapped down low if there is not enough air flow causing the worms to flee. And as you know excess food can also be a factor if the nitrogen cycle turns things into ammonia or if the food ferments. Did you ever find out what caused them to flee and did the whole worm bin crash? I can add some worms I bait out from my casting storage ruclips.net/video/WCevZRPuYug/видео.html to my VermiHut (I've been putting them in my Urban Worm Bag) and we'll see if it affects the bin. Thanks for the suggestion and of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick, your tower is getting the full treatment today! Do you think the worms slowed reproduction (or sped it up) because they hadn't been fed? ~ Sandra
That is a great question Sandra!! I was actually pretty afraid that I would see the population shrink and was pleasantly surprised to see what looked to me to be a similar population to what I'm used to seeing...especially when I drove them down with the agitation method of harvesting. What I did notice was they seemed to be thicker...not sure if that was more red wigglers in the mix and less blue worms or if the lack of food but plentiful cardboard had anything to do with it??!!? So in short, I don't think I saw a shrinking or speeding up of reproduction. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
You win y favorite worm channel vote! Question: I just got my Vermihut. What would be the effect if I placed some Insect screen fabric left over from covering my raised garden bed in the bottom-most bin that has dry shred? I am thinking that it would prevent any migration into the sump. What are your thoughts?
Yay!! Thanks so much Mary, we really appreciate the kind words!! I would give it a try to see how it works! You may have noticed a white fabric-y almost plastic-y sheet in the contents of the VermiHut (not sure if they still include it). This was used as a worm block in the early versions before they came up with the hard plastic white piece with lots of holes. It was not very good as it sometimes collected/trapped water & sludge. I find the best way to prevent worms from going down into the sump is having enough dry shredded cardboard in the bottom inoculating trays. I'm not sure if you have seen my rotating videos but here are a couple of them: ruclips.net/video/XNG4i8iXc_g/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/_uRRpwZcMXM/видео.html It is a different way of rotating from the instructions but it helps me keep the worms out of the bottom while I also inoculate the trays with microbes! If your mesh works well for you please be sure to let us know so we can try it!! Thanks so much for watching Mary!!🪱🪱🪱
Really enjoy the videos and information you always give. could you maybe try and mix the eggshell and the coffeegrounds before you put it in? My experience is they go through it way faster.
That is a great idea!! I'm such a lazy worm farmer that I just put them in their own containers as I generate them...coffee grounds much faster than egg shells which I rinse dry and grind. I'll give it a try and see how it goes!! Thanks so much for the suggestion & thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost Thanks for your answer! ! oven bake or microwave the eggshells for a short time as well before the grinding, i find the worms go through it like it's redbull.
My bins and I have also been in a neglected mode for a while after having 2 knees and a hip replaced… the worms get smaller, but they bounce back. I hate having to let them go longer than 30 days, but sometimes, I just can’t.
Oh wow, I've been wondering where you've been this last year!! 2 knees & a hip...you're practically bionic!! We're so lucky our worms are resilient in our absence!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
It can absolutely be brought in the house!! Mine is kept in our house year round and here is a video where I show it there: ruclips.net/video/sItTCZbqLAU/видео.html The worms do not escape! As with any worm bin, as long as it is not overfed, your worms will not want to venture into the dry air. Worms try to escape worm bins to flee noxious gasses that will kill them and when they do flee, they only get about a inch away as they dry up, can't breath and die crating "worm jerky". I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I've been inspired to get an indoor worm bin. I has legs and fits in a corner. I did for a year and got great results. I was using scraps from peels etc, instead of putting in my food disposal. I shut operations down. Would like to restart. But I've been JUICING and every week I get a grocery bag fill with material. I'm currently using a BOKASI BIN, because I've got enough material to use it. I burrow after 2 weeks in the garden and in a month I'm getting usable material. I'd like to get back to the worms. judgeing by the amount of material. What size should I be working with , as far as worm amount.? And would I need the worm bag vs worm bin?
Oh Ya! The worms will absolutely love the juicing material, especially if you freeze it first!! When I start new bins or help folks start new bins I like to give them 2,000 red wigglers to really jump start their bins. Of course as you know the worms will quickly double and triple their population after a few months. As for worm bins, I would set up your current bin again and maybe get the Urban Worm Bag to be able to throw bigger amounts of food scraps in at a time. Between a BOKASHI Bin and an UWB, as long as you keep feeding and adding more bedding to the UWB, they will quickly take care of all your juicing leftovers! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Mark!!🪱🪱🪱
If starting new, do I start with 3 trays? The two bottom trays dry cardboard and feed the top tray? I only have about 300 red wigglers in a small tote now but just got a vermihut tower and will be purchasing another 500 worms this weekend.
Yes! That is exactly how to do it! You will be off to a great start that way! Congrats on your VermiHut! You’re going to love it!! Thanks so much for watching!🪱🪱🪱
The squirrel damage!!! Tragic! Also I’ve always put banana peels with the stickers in my worm bins and compost tumbler and never see them, only the plastic apple stickers. Do you see the banana stickers in yours?
I know!! I was pretty devastated when I saw what they did to my VemiHut tray!! Totally my fault for leaving it in my kids jungle gym which has turned in to my garden equipment storage now that they are in their 20's! I'll have to leave these stickers in here...I guess I thought the stickers I pull out came from the apples and bananas, but now you have me wondering?!!?? Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi, thank you for your helpful videos. Do you get an abundance of mites putting in a whole banana? I'll be starting my Vevor migration hut this weekend with my red wigglers. I put a whole banana in my blues totes and immediately got an abundance of red mites. I baited them out with the banana and then didn't put it back in. Do you have a video talking about mites in your Vermihut? I look forward as always to your next videos.
Hi Tammie! Thanks for the kind words! I haven't noticed specifically getting an abundance of mites with a whole banana, but I do get an occasional abundance of mites when I overfeed a slow food. Whole bananas are a kind of a mix of a slow and fast food, in fact sometimes I notice that the banana will smell like banana alcohol the next time I check in if the worms haven't eaten it all. So anytime the worms don't get to a food quickly the mites will do their best to take over. This is especially true of more acidic foods. You did the right thing by tossing out the mite covered banana if you don't want a mite bloom to occur. I would just put in less banana next time, maybe a third of a banana. As for your new worm tower, I would expect several blooms of mites, maybe even springtails or weird looking slime molds over the course of the first year of your tower's life...this is just a normal result of the ecosystem finding its balance just like your totes probably did. If you use some of the contents and worms from your tote, you will speed up the maturity of your worm tower by leaps and bounds!! Here is an old video (I wasn't quite as good at editing back then) of when I got some weird stuff growing in my VermiHut that I haven't experienced again: ruclips.net/video/vresBBX_SPQ/видео.html My VermiHut really doesn't get too many mite blooms compared to my Tiny Traveling worm bin: ruclips.net/video/As9LNdmjUIU/видео.html I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@Vermicompost , thank you. I'll check out those videos before I binge watch some of your others. It's my favorite lunch time activity, those in my breakroom at work have questioned what the heck I'm watching, but then become curious once I explain everything.
😂 I love it!! I'm so glad you are enjoying our videos on your break!! The best part of vermicomposting is sharing it with your curious friends!! Thanks for your support Tammie!!
Besides the little glimpse I gave of the agitation method I use in this bin about halfway through this video, I have this video where I show how I harvest using one of the VermiHut trays as a sifter: ruclips.net/video/tI--M5E-oKg/видео.html and these videos of how I individually pluck them out of my Tiny Traveling Worm Bin: ruclips.net/video/uH3xPs9T5s0/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/Img2UsmHL3A/видео.html I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Lara!!🪱🪱🪱
I live in the Tampa Florida, USA area where it is sunny, humid and hot for 7 months out of the year. I have two worm bins outside, My Outdoor Worm Bin: ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV08Y-7OifhRa_JBH0b5-nR-O and my Urban Worm Bag: ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV09Jg8S3xp-08eOoTN21S2Q1 As long as your worm bin is in the shade and you don't overfeed it, they should have no problems being outside. In the winter, even in a freeze, their cocoons survive and you will continue to see compost worms in the winter in your bins!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
1) can we replace cardboard with brown leaves.? 2) your vermi system may cause we can't harvest for worm pee, isn't bring us some disadvantages? 3) is it normal to have mites in the bin? I am sorry,my English is not good.
Your English is great!! But I can translate if you want to ask questions in your native language. Yes you can use brown leaves instead of cardboard, but it will take longer. I have an abundance of cardboard and not too many leaves so I use cardboard. I don't use the liquid that accumulates down below because it can harbor harmful anaerobic microbes if it sits for awhile. So I try to avoid that. But you can run water through your worm tower and use that right away if you want. I make worm casting tea in a mesh bag in a 5 gallon bucket of water with worm castings and a fish tank bubbler which I use on my plants. This makes sure the beneficial aerobic microbes are present in the liquid. It is very normal to have mites in your worm bins. They help the worms break down the food, but if you have a big population bloom of mites, you may want to feed the worm bin less food scraps and more bedding. Thank you for all the great questions! I hope I have helped!!🪱🪱🪱
My guess is 4,000-5,000 based on counting the pre-harvest tray and projecting out to the whole system in this video: ruclips.net/video/TfQgUwdMPrY/видео.html I started it with 2,000 and I think it hit it's carrying capacity within the first 6 months. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
😂🤣😂 So true!! Only one more video for me to talk about it because I have 4 worm bins I have neglected and I've only refed three of them...gotta let folks know why I've been such a bad worm dad for 3 months!! My wife will tell you the corollary to that is: How do you know if someone is a pilot? Just talk to them for 3 minutes and they'll tell you!! (and yes, I am a pilot😂✈️) Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks Ann! The bottom surprised me as well, I thought for sure it would have been completely soaked! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & Happy Mother’s Day!🪱🪱🪱

Been neglecting my bins a bit, too. Got to get back to it. 😅
Cheers Pat, have a great weekend!
Thanks so much for stopping by and for your excellent VermiHut videos over on your channel as well!!🪱🪱🪱
Give ALL your tea to the worms - its basically bedding 😂
Yes!! I should drink more tea for all of our benefits!! It is amazing how much they love it!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@ymcmbas 😂
Question: can the VermiHut be brought indoors if winter temperatures fall below freezing? Do the worms try or do escape?
Do you have a video of removing some worms to share ?
Besides the little glimpse I gave of the agitation method I use in this bin about halfway through this video, I have this video where I show how I harvest using one of the VermiHut trays as a sifter: ruclips.net/video/tI--M5E-oKg/видео.html and these videos of how I individually pluck them out of my Tiny Traveling Worm Bin: ruclips.net/video/uH3xPs9T5s0/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/Img2UsmHL3A/видео.html I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Lara!!🪱🪱🪱
Can we leave any worm bins outside?
@@Vermicompost thank you, and I enjoy watching your videos, it is informative and easy to understand.
I’m so glad you are enjoying our videos! Thanks so much for the kind words!
How many worms would you say you have in there?
My guess is 4,000-5,000 based on counting the pre-harvest tray and projecting out to the whole system in this video: ruclips.net/video/TfQgUwdMPrY/видео.html I started it with 2,000 and I think it hit it's carrying capacity within the first 6 months. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Q) how to tell if someone has had surgery ? À) talk to them for 5 minutes and they will tell you about 6 times .
Jeez, you make it sound like his explaining why he hadn't kept on top of his bins cost you something
Wow, a good set it and forgot it example 🎉🎉I'm surprised the bottom is dry. . good to get back on track. 👍🏼😀🪱
Thanks Ann! The bottom surprised me as well, I thought for sure it would have been completely soaked! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & Happy Mother’s Day!🪱🪱🪱
