Congrats on breaking 1000 in the tiny bin! I'm kind of blown away by that density. I'm looking at the 3 gal bin on amazon and it says the interior dimensions are 11.5" * 7.5" or an area of 86.25 sqin. That's considerably smaller than a square foot, only 60%! If those measurements are correct, then a square foot of worm bin at your density would hold 1680 worms!
Thank you!! Those dimensions a pretty close for the bottom of the bin. The bin tapers in a little from top to bottom. The top of the bin measures 13 inches by 9 inches and the bottom is 11.75 inches by 7.75 inches. The square footage looks like it is somewhere between 0.82 to 0.63 square feet. I'm not sure if the volume is important but the depth was about 3 inches. Of course that could vary wildly with a little fluffing of the contents. Thanks for figuring that out; I hadn't thought of figuring out the density of worms in there!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Hey Patrick, a few of us are starting a self help group for worm addiction…! By the way, please calculate the area of the bin so we can test whether one square foot equals 1000 worms max. Thanks! ~ Sandra
Yes!! I need help...I guess that's why Autumn only lets me have 3...because if I have 4 I'll have 40 not too long after🤣😂🤣 Soooo the bin tapers a little. The top is 13 inches by 9 inches but tapers down to 11.75 inches by 7.75 inches. So the surface area is somewhere between 0.81 Square feet and 0.63 Square feet. Not sure is depth is important but it was about 3 inches deep, of course that depth can vary widely with "fluffing". I guess I have proved with constant regular weekly feedings & added bedding you can get more than 1000 worms per square foot!!! You can also get a gazillion mites into less than a square foot😱 Thanks so much for the fun comment, check my math, I wouldn't trust it!!🪱🪱🪱

I also did it once because of the midges (they're still there and population is going up and down and up and ...) and was afraid to drown my worms. Great video!

@@Vermicompost I would keep going and counting with this tiny bin! So fun. I bet if you keep going the next count would be near the same but by another year would double. This was over summer and the cocoons may hatch more during this period?, my two cents of unexperienced limited knowledge and observation. Would be fun to establish the max capacity of this size bin. Your a good worm Papa 😂
@@annsalty5615 Thank you!! Unfortunately I think you are right, in order to find out if I have hit max capacity I'm gonna have to count again...and now I'm going to cry myself to sleep as I think about having to do that again in about 5 months🤣😂🤣
1008! fantastic. We were gone all day, couldn't update anything. Judging by the size of the 1000 worm ball I'm thinking my blue bin has a couple of thousand. (much larger than the small bin i know). Fun times when you know the exact count.
Yes!! It is good to know exactly how many worms are in your bin!! I definitely think your blue bin has at least a couple thousand!! Thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Totally awesome! My estimate was 1400. I'm a optimist! My bins r doing well, fed 1 of them to see how they handle it. I've been adding cardboard and grit.👍🙏👍🙏

@@Vermicompost I did count 250 worms yesterday so I had a reference! I'm going to send them to Duncan at NW coastal gardens. They were in my compost, still lots in there! Didn't take long to collect either!👍
@@Vermicompost lol! Your going to love my next video when it uploads! I just got back from the allotment with some more worms, I've just put them into my big bin, you can watch them settle in.🙏😁💚👍 I got quite a lot.🤯
Instead of counting I probably would suggest weighing them when you start a bin then weigh it when you harvest , obviously if the worms are heavier you got a increase in colony size , a bit easier I think .
You are absolutely right...that would be way easier...but I can't resist😂🤣😂 It is so much fun to know exactly how much I have!! I have started weighing them in different amounts and plotting the data. The slope of the line is a great formula to find out how many worms are in a given pile of worms if you know the weight. Here is the formula after several data points: y=0.0007x - 0.0091 where y is the weight in pounds and x is the number of worms...so 1 pound of worms is approximately 1415 worms or 1000 worms is approximately 0.69 pounds. Now there is no way I would count out the total in my other bins as they are much bigger than this one!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and pass on a good tip!!🪱🪱🪱
Red wigglers are a lot smaller than European night crawlers are, right? I'm trying to get an idea of what 500 European night crawlers would look like. I also have Louisiana swamp worms and I think they are somewhere in between sizewise. I'm just trying to get an idea of what that would look like. Interesting video as usual. you've sure got a lot more patience than I do!!
Thank you!! I kinda tricked Autumn into helping me when I said on video I would be counting them, but she was a good sport...but we both were regretting it about halfway in!! I think you are right Cookie. I don't have any ENC's or Louisiana swamp worms to compare to my red wigglers to, but from what I've heard you are correct. Thanks so much for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱
When harvesting, do you have any suggestions on how to separate the tiny new worms out of your castings? We have harvested once, (thanks for your help!), and there were so many that slipped through our screening process, we tried to get them all but I’m sure we didn’t 😢
Honestly the best way I have found to get the tiny worms after a harvest is to put a strawberry top or some other small fast food that they like about a half inch down into the castings (I put my castings in a storage container or a cocoon nursery after harvesting.) Come back in three days and most, if not all of the babies will be attacking the food and you can just scoop them out and pick them off the food. Repeat if necessary or until you get no more babies attacking the food. Hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!! I'm so happy my previous videos have helped you out!!🪱🪱🪱
Great guess!! I did not think we'd be over 1000!!! There were just shy of 7 lbs of castings, I forgot to put that in the video. Not bad for a Tiny Worm bin!! Thanks so much for watching!!
🤣😂🤣 Speechless that I actually counted all of them or that I had 1008 worms in this tiny bin😀 That was absolutely exhausting!! I bet in a couple months time your bin will have way more than this!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Manda!!🪱🪱🪱

@@ontherocksinthesoilmichael6739 Can't believe I didn't think of that...I need to retire this one and get an Urban Worm Bag!!! I should just order it and ask for forgiveness later🤣😂🤣
@@Vermicompost love my Urban Worm Bag. I do suggest you get the cross straps that they sell to stabilize it or build the wooden frame for it. When it gets 1/2 full or more metal frame gets wobly.
We'd be interested to see when you restart the bin, if you kept the carbohydrates and sugars to a minimum if that would mitigate the mite issues. I mean you use bread to bait them, so that may indicate that's where they start aswell??? Autumn's a Saint or just as crazy as you, either way, awesomeness Autumn!! 1000 🥳🥳🥳🥳, can we have a recount please 🤣🤣🤣 Please tell me you weigh them !!! Darnit lol !! Awesome video you two 🌱🪱💪🌱😁
😂 I started with 5 strawberry tops & I plan to avoid mite blooms so no pasta and straight carbs besides my fast to be eaten worm chow!! I found 8 more as I was cleaning up getting ready for their bath so the restart began with 1008 and they weighed in at 0.9 pounds or 408 grams!! It flashed on the screen pretty fast. I guess the 1 loud per 1000 red wigglers is pretty accurate! Keep me honest this round...I always seem to get a little crazy and add something I should to this tiny bin!! Thanks so much for all your support J&C!!🪱🪱🪱

Lol no way there has to be 4 more worms . I thought you might have close to 1k. You guys did it. Humm you will never know the actual max of the tiny worm bin if you don't count again. 🤔

Very, very cool! It was so interesting to have a visual reference to each count of 100 added to the overall tally 👍🏻 When I responded to the poll a couple days ago I originally selected the 'over 1000' option, but then I - for some reason - changed my vote to 801-1000. Gotta remember to stick to my initial gut feel in cases like this. Should've trusted my original estimate. Thanks for taking the time to make this video guys - it sure took a while, but it turned out awesome :)
Thank you!! I really appreciate it coming from everyones' favorite Vermicomposting RUclipsr!! It was absolutely exhausting to make!! One of the rules someone taught me early on, that I always bites me in the end, is go with your first answer🤣😂🤣 Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to watch AV!!🪱🪱🪱
Yes - gotta remember the _stick to your first answer_ rule - kinda like when you're answering a multiple choice question on an exam to which you are not entirely certain of the correct answer :)
Wow 1008 red wigglers! That was painstaking counting those worms. They looked great after their bath. I’m thinking you may get an additional 250, but I would figure you are definitely getting close to the maximum holding capacity of the bin 😁🪱
You got that right...absolutely painstaking!! I've got to think I'm at the max capacity by now...I was surprised to see another 400 worm jump from the only 130 jump last time around after going up 400 prior to that. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Rick!!🪱🪱🪱

🤣😂🤣 I wanted to tell you that you were right when I saw your comment on the poll!! I could not believe I was 4 worms short!!! No way I was gonna let that happen!! Sounds like you were right there with me when you were watching!!!😂 I think the worms felt refreshed after their bath!! Thanks so much for watching!! Great guess!!🪱🪱🪱
Lots of babies...but this time it is looking smaller than usual..
Yes, lots of babies in here!! Hopefully they keep reproducing for this next round!! Thanks so much for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱
Numerous earthworms in the bin 😮 You count worms 😅 I’m starting to use earthworm compost to grow some flowers in my garden.
You are using worm compost!!! Yay!!!! Did you do a video on it? I'll have to go back and check! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Bo!!!🪱🪱🪱
Why i was way excited hoping youd find them last 4 😂😂😂
😂🤣😂 We never thought these worm counting videos would be as entertaining as they turned out to be!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it to the end!! Thanks so much for watching Charlie!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost thank you for sharing
1008 is a lot of worms. Would you mind heading over and counting mine? 🤣
@My Northern Garden USDA 9a Hello Allen. Have a great day. 😎
AJ, I love you like a twin brother, but you're gonna have to get mom to help you...I'm exhausted🤣😂🤣 Thanks for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost You said it was your last time counting the worms. I was just checking. 🤣
@@AJsGreenTopics 🤣😂🤣I think you have 2000-3000+ in each bin!!!
hahaaa!! this was so much fun to watch!
Thank you!! It's always a check on our sanity when we count this Tiny Worm Bin after harvest! Thanks so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!🪱🪱🪱
Yeah! 💥👑🪱🪱🪱🍾🥂
You're guess was close!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!!🪱🪱🪱
Interesting
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
That is about the same difference as my 600 guess so not bad!! Great to hear you bins are doing well and ready fro more food scraps & bedding!! Looking forward to their next video!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost I did count 250 worms yesterday so I had a reference! I'm going to send them to Duncan at NW coastal gardens. They were in my compost, still lots in there! Didn't take long to collect either!👍
I love that you have a never ending supply!!
I'm so happy my previous videos have helped you out!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost great idea I’ll definitely try it, thank you
Can't remember what my guess was but i did suspect over a 1000, it would be nice to know how many castings were harvested, now for round 2 lol
Great guess!! I did not think we'd be over 1000!!! There were just shy of 7 lbs of castings, I forgot to put that in the video. Not bad for a Tiny Worm bin!! Thanks so much for watching!!
😱 I'm totally
Speechless, I even pressed the wrong.....1008🐮🐮🐮
🤣😂🤣 Speechless that I actually counted all of them or that I had 1008 worms in this tiny bin😀 That was absolutely exhausting!! I bet in a couple months time your bin will have way more than this!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Manda!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost with all of it, I was sat here shouting out yes, yes ,yes, my poor dog was wondering what was going on 🤣😂
It's freaky feeding Friday tomorrow...😊🐮🐮🐮
😂
Definitely time to upgrade to a larger home
I'm adding this to the list of comments for my wife to read so she lets me get another bin!!🤣😂🤣I've got to be at the carry capacity of this bin by now right??!? Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost it doesn't have to be an additional bin just a larger one 😆!
Thank you!! Good to know about the straps!! Fingers crossed I get one!!
1000 🥳🥳🥳🥳, can we have a recount please 🤣🤣🤣
Please tell me you weigh them !!!

What is the temperature of the bath water?
I used room temperature water around 75℉ or 23.9℃. I don't usually "wash" my worms but I just wanted to get all the mites off as I restarted this bin. It was only the second time ever that I did this. Thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Lol no way there has to be 4 more worms . I thought you might have close to 1k. You guys did it. Humm you will never know the actual max of the tiny worm bin if you don't count again. 🤔
🤣 Ya I could not believe I got to 996 and ran out of worms!!! I wish you wouldn't have used that logic...now we'll have to count again...and I might just cry myself to sleep thinking about it!! Thanks for taking the time to watch Ann!!🪱🪱🪱

@My Northern Garden USDA 9a hi Allan, I'm so glad you are subscribed to Patrick's channel. He is the Master Worm Herder 🪱 💓🪱
