      They're right you can get gallon sweet tea and lemonade from Chick-fil-A now. I'm just throwing this out there but maybe someone has labeled their sweet tea as theirs when it's actually Chick-fil-A tea. I'm not saying that they should do it but it could happen. I went to boarding school at 13 and a girl in my dorm offered me some tea. As a Southerner, I was thrilled but mystified when she handed it to me in a tea cup with no ice. I tasted it and it was essentially boiled grass and sadness. I tried so hard to cover my disappointment but I could not drink it.
    Luckily, I learned my lesson and when I was an adult traveling up North, I learned to never order tea unless I was home. I did try once and they brought me unsweetened tea and sugar packets. Heathens!

      Oh, it gets worse up north. If you ask for "Sweet Tea" anywhere but McDonald's, they will look at like you said words that don't go together, and then say, "Oh, uh, I don't think we have that, but I can bring you some unsweetened iced tea, and some sugar packets."
      I was at Bob Evan's up north one time, and asked for sweet tea, since it was on the menu. I got my tea, and SWEET CHRIST, you could FEEL the sugar in it. Yeah, so then, I call the waitress over to ask how there's so much sugar in it, and she goes, "Oh dear, I'm sorry. I don't know how this happen. We made up the tea, and once it was ready to go, we added the sugar in."
      I then spent the next couple of minutes explaining that you have to put the sugar in while the tea is hot, so the sugar dissolves. When you don't do that, the sugar all goes to the bottom, and sits there till you get to the bottom of the tank, and then all of it starts going out into the drink.

Granted, it wasn’t straight sweet, but a mix of sweet and unsweetened, but she was so consistent that certain employees knew when she’d be coming and pre make it for her.

    My mama taught me if you are worried your tea might go sour, add just a pinch of baking soda when making it and it won’t turn. Doesn’t effect the flavor and makes it last longer in the fridge. Also, I used to work at chick Fil a and we had a special measuring cup to know just how much sugar to put in, but I was always told people wouldn’t complain if you add a little more, only if you add less.😂 we also used plastic liners in the tea canisters so you don’t get the taste of bad tea if someone doesn’t wash it right.

One boss used to drop his cigarette butts into a can he thought looked like it had been abandoned so he wouldn't set the trash can on fire, but he wouldn't throw the can away so he could put all of his butts in it. I can't tell you how many times one of ran into the office to get a quick drink and got a mouthful of cigarette ash-flavored soda. It was so disgusting! 🤮😡😭 We yelled at him about it, but he wouldn't stop. We ended up hiding our soda.

      Back in the early 1970's my mom ran a little store/gas station in a eyeblink town near Ft Hood, TX. All of the locals would come in and sit around and talk, tell lies and have a cold drink. One little boy had the habit of just running up to the table and grabbing someone's drink and chugging about half of it. Well, one day my oldest brother was working the store and he was pretty good at spitting his tobacco into a soda can and not leaving evidence of it. On a hot afternoon one time that boy grabbed brother's spit can and got about 3 good swallows down before he realized it wasn't Dr Pepper in there. It was a terrible, funny site seeing all of his reactions. It did break that boy of grabbing people's drinks without asking.

    Matt is right that tea can go sour. It can happen to unsweet too. Whats happening is that a petri dish of mold and bacteria are growing in the tea (i.e. it's spoiling) It happens faster with sweet tea and if you don't keep your tea COLD, it will happen even faster. Restaurants that consistently have sour tea means they are are not cleaning the tea brewing machine properly and/or they are holding tea over a day or more and not throwing out the unsold the day it was made. We tend to have this problem ALOT here in San Antonio. Alot of ignorant restaurant managers. I rate local restaurants according to whether they have good tea or not. If they have good tea, most likely they will have good food. As for fast food tea - McDonalds gets my vote. They are more *consistent* with the taste AND they put expiration labels on the tea vats - a matter of hours after the tea was made. I almost always never get sour tea from McDonalds. If I do, its because of a seriously lame manager not following company rules.

    I grew up in Arizona. (I know, not the South, but be patient with me-I’ve also lived in South Carolina.) I made my own sun tea and drank so much of Wendy’s iced tea that I probably should have bought stock in the company. Imagine my disappointment when I moved to Maryland (not the South, except for parts of Saint Mary’s County) and ordered Wendy’s iced tea. It was never, not once, fresh. It always had that taste like it had been brewed ten days ago and stored under some dorm room bed. Worse yet, I found the same thing in swanky restaurants in Baltimore and DC. I eventually gave up on buying iced tea anywhere north of Richmond, VA. Even church pot luck iced tea wasn’t right there.

    Along with four of her brothers, my aunt served in the military during WWII, where she met her future husband, a southerner. As a result, we made numerous trips down south where they brewed their own sweet tea. It was delicious and refreshing and no national chain can come close, let alone duplicate it. It requires the right equipment, exact measurements, the correct amount of brewing time, including having sunlight hit it. And it must be drank fresh. No national chain could ever adhere to those requirements, even if they wanted to. I long ago gave up any notion that I could get really good sweet tea at any place other than in someone's home in the south.

When you ordered tea, they pointed at two plastic pitchers, like the kind your best friend's mom put KoolAid in back in the 80s. One was sweet, one was not sweet. If you wanted ice, they pointed at this old ice machine that was built from WW2 bomber parts and probably had been running continuously since 1947. Matt would have approved of the ice this thing pebbled out. The tea was sweet and tasted like a backyard BBQ. I'd stop over for lunch, fill up a huge Styrofoam cup, yes they used Styrofoam, and caffeinate myself through the rest of the day. Amazing.

    • @margaretwilson8736
      @margaretwilson8736 5 лет назад +5

      Most of the time they do it because some people cant have the real sugar and it'd be a PITA to have tea with normal sugar, splenda, sweet and low, and Stevia.
      ... Also, heathens like me like tea without anything in it. Lady grey tea makes a lovely herb water. 😊

It was very busy that day and I had forgotten about it later on. Well now that I don't have the job, ill remember that forever. Lol

    From Virginia and grew up with Mom's sweet tea, which I still make for the kids. As a 16 year old working at McDonald's, though, I was only allowed Cokes and other fountain drinks until I asked the manager about drinking unsweetened tea. I grew to enjoy it, much like my black unsweetened coffee and chicory.
