  • There has been a lot of China-related news in Korea lately, with China’s foreign minister visiting Seoul to talk about improving the bilateral relationship between China and Korea. However, according to a recent public opinion poll conducted in Korea, more than 75.9% of Koreans felt negatively towards China and even viewed North Korea and Japan more positively. So our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Seoul to find out how Koreans really feel about China in 2021. Is the result of the poll accurate? What are the reasons behind this? Watch to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.

Just wanted to say something.. Kimchi in Chinese is often referred to as Han guo pao cai 韩国泡菜, it literally means Korean Kimchi.. The Korean is added to distinguish it from Chinese Paocai. I don't know wtf is going on, but things going around on social media and the internet have been seriously distorted...
PAOCAI literally means fermented vegetables, so paocai does NOT equal to Kimichi. No one, literally No one I know around me, thinks Kimchi is Chinese. Still, we do have our own paocai (different types of fermented vegetables). I hope this explains the confusion... ><
And again, people I know (people I have met and talked to) know hanbok is Korean, and no one claims it to be Chinese. Cultural exchanges and influences have existed between the two, since hundreds of years ago Joseon and Chinese Dynasties have maintained a kinda good relationship. The traditional Han ethnic clothing, 'Hanfu', is not hanbok. The two does share similarities when you first see it, but its actually quite different, and if you search up some Hanfu from Ming dystnasty you will know thats how it looked like hundreads of years ago.
Social media and the internet made it convenient for information to be shared and exchanged, but also created convenience for misinformation...

03:22 I was shocked by her statement that she has been to Tibet when it was independent, so she has been there before the 1950s? how old is she?
I totally agree with the views hold by Koreans. As a Chinese student now studies in S.Korea, I am shocked that I can see news about China every day, negative news. Some interviewed Korean people said that people in China are nice, I would tell you the simple reason is that our government shields the news from the outside world (mostly negative news), so we only focus on ourselves and learn the positive things from another country, but also we adapted it for our country, I don't think BTL is good for us, since our value is different.
I have to mention Hanfu (not hanbok) is our traditional clothes and Paocai is only some local food in China, it cannot be the main dish as it is in Korean culture (including North Korea and Korean-Chinese places in China). Speaking of food, the way to make food cannot be a patent. In the thousand years of history of China, making kimchi is not a weird thing, we also use a similar way for bamboo and green beans. I cannot understand why you guys care so much about it.
Also, I have to say, people in South Korea cannot stand for all the Koreans, you guys are only the Koreans living in the southern part of this biland. For more views about China from the Korean community, you have to go to Koreans living in North Korea and the Korean-Chinese regions. please don't let some people stand for the whole community, just like Mongolia cannot stand for all the Mongolia people since there are inner Mongolia people who are living in China.

As a Chinese, I must clarify, "汉服" and "韩服" are totally different things, no one said it is the same thing. "Kimchi" in Chinese is the same as "Korean pickled cabbage", none of Chinese will say "Korean pickled cabbage" is a kind of Chinese food (both "Kimchi"), and in Sichuan and North-eastern, there has a traditional Chinese food "Pickled cabbage", but Chinese are used to say all the pickled vegetables as "Pickled cabbage" for convenience, no matter it is Chinese "Pickled cabbage" or Korean "Pickled cabbage" (actually I definitely will distinguish them when I am in a restaurant). If you walk on the street in China, ask 100 people about "韩服" and "Kimchi", you will get the same answer: they are both belong to the Korean nationality. Trust me.

There are so many things that are Chinese that Chinese people don’t need to claim these two additional things. Only the insecure ones need to do things that. Koreans can stop with their projection.

And it’s never heard of inside in China. But foreigners do come here get organs and they are told it’s from executed criminals. Strange thing is, it’s never on social media in China, only logical explanations are: it’s true they use executed prisoners organs to save others but only in secret and only to foreigners. Or, it never happens they just use organ donor’s and sell them to rich ppl or foreigners for profit which is corruption, these are supposed to go to ppl waiting in line. Why I have this assumption is if this was big scale crime against normal people, there would have been many cases on social media, ppl would have stepped out and tell their stories. So yeah basically it’s a lie when you hear China has massive genocide and organ harvesting because we never heard of it and now everyone has smart phones it’s literally impossible to hide such abysmal crime.

For example, the hanbok and kimchi outrage, the story Korean heard is "Chinese said hanbok and Kimchi belongs to China" while what Chinese heard is "Korean said hanfu (汉服) and Paocai(泡菜) belongs to Korean". Paocai(泡菜) in Chinese is actually a neutral word for fermented food like Kimchi, Sauerkraut and sour cucumber, more precisely, Kimchi in Chinese speaking is 韩国泡菜(Korean pickle).

Think about how the Chinese gov't has acted towards a lot of nations including Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, HK, Malaysia, and the Phillippines. A lot of this is based on the South China Sea, unfair trade agreements, and China's imperialist actions. The whole COVID19 issue was the icing on the cake. I am Filipino who held a very negative view towards China barely a year ago until I started learning about their history I understand more their position. China's position is reactionary towards the imperialism of the west, read about the century of humiliation for China and how they were forced to give up Macau, Hongkong etc. and you will understand more why they have their position now. They have learned that they are very vulnerable in the sea and tries to secure it or have a more decisive presence. Now remove China in the picture and Taiwan, Vietnam and my country Philippines are still contesting the same waters. My country right now is taking a more diplomatic stance on the issue and emphasized on joint collaboration and sharing. The only problem is that the US has a lot of military bases in Asia and they use this to flex towards China. This is aggravating China and they are flexing back showing that they aren't the China 100 years ago that was just stepped around. They also don't want to give up Taiwan, giving up Taiwan is allowing the US to have a stronger hold in the area. Imagine if China has bases in Cuba, Haiti or the coast of California, that is what China feels in the South China Sea with US naval presence.

    • @octavia7408

@@justinlook3531 China doesn't have a history of Imperialism, unlike the west. Actually, China was raided with lots of pirates from possibly the Philippines or Indonesia some 1000 years ago. Because they have records, we have a bit of our history recorded by them. China has traded with other kingdoms of Southeast Asia for thousands of years. They never subjugated them unlike Spain, Dutch, British, French, Americans who came and colonized our lands. Now that China is a growing power, the west headed by the US is doing every tactic it has to stain China. Sure, China isn't perfect but the west definitely isn't either. Much of the negative narrative comes from CIA backed by the US military industry as they try to manufacture consent of the people so the people will support them for their new war using Taiwan as a catalyst or if not war, to sell weapons as they did to Australia. You can't sell weapons if you can't establish an enemy. You don't have to look far in history to know that they did the same thing to Iraq and Afghanistan.

But trying to say that china outright owns the territory and installing military forces in the regions against the established agreements is a whole different story. Why is it that Vietnam was open to western military help last year? It's because China kept expanding its military forces. Please don't excuse China's horrible behavior. Actions speak louder than words and China's actions have been horrible. We Asians should be able to share the region and come up to an agreement but we can't do that if China keeps acting the way they do.

It's different when one country (China) has no freedom of speech, is authoritarian and controls the state media. That's the real problem - CCP manipulating the Chinese people to antagonise it's neighbours by spreading lies to create a common enemy, and keep the Chinese people united, to stay in power. Common tactic used by dictatorships.

Why Chinese claim kimchi as theres is different to why Koreans think China claims kimchi as theirs. 2 points here.
      1) Kimchi literally means "soaked/fermented vegetables". It doesnt just mean the red chilli cabbage fermented vegetable dish we all know of. Kimchi is an umbrella term. Theres like 200 different types of kimchi in Korea.
Paocai also literally means "soaked/fermented vegetables". Also hundreds if not thousand of different types of paocai in China.
The method of "fermenting vegetables" in the region originated from China. That is why China claims "fermenting vegetables" aka kimchi/paocai as theirs.
      2) Koreans claim kimchi originated from the 3 kingdom periods. Most of Goguryeo, the largest of the 3 Korean kingdom is located in modern day NE China. There are also Koreans native to NE China. Anything within Chinas borders today is "Chinese", including those native ethnic Koreans. Theyre Chinese citizens. Therefore, "kimchi" is also Chinese (not to say its not also Koreans). Koreans are native to 3 countries afterall, SK, NK, and NE China.

Youve already formulated in your head that kimchi aka "fermented vegetables" is Korean. And ONLY Korean. Whereas in reality the food is eaten in the REGION that spans across 3 countries including China.
And no, your analogy is not comparing apples with apples. Pizza is not traditional food of a region spanning across multiple countries...Its originated specifically in Italy and only in Italy.

Many Westerners tend to judge East Asian countries based on their own biases, without considering the unique cultural and historical contexts of each country. For instance, the dynamic between Canada and France differs greatly from that of Korea and China, and the relationships between Canadians and french, as well as between Koreans and Chinese, are also distinct. Korea's resentment towards China bears similarities to its resentment towards Japan, stemming from historical conflicts of victimhood and perpetration. Therefore, labeling such sentiments as 'racism' only demonstrates a limited understanding of the complexities involved.

If you are too busy to watch the entire video, here is the summary:
Over the past 2 years, especially South Koreans in 20s and 30s, developed negative views on China. (75.9% said negative towards China)
    These are the main reasons:
    1. Dust pollution blown to Korea.
    2. COVID
    3. Chinese media argues that Kimchi and Hanbok are Chinese.
    4. Other opinions like: Chinese government's action towards BTS, stealing South Korean entertainment without copyright..etc.
However what people commonly said were: they dislike China government but like Chinese friends and Chinese food.

The period from 1910 to 1945 was the most nostalgic period for Korean women, when Korean women had stable jobs in Japanese military camps, and Korean women made Japanese soldiers take turns working on their knees. So all Koreans today have Japanese ancestry. Shut up! Descendants of comfort women!

@@achillesz7258 Well, Korean is not banning anything from China. It is a free country, Korea do not ban anything.
People can choose what they want to view or listen. Korean people have free to say whatever, it is not communist country if that is what you are referring to.
People can watch Chinese drama if they want to, they have Chinese drama showing in Korean network, It is not popular, but people have a choice, that is what I am saying.
On the other hand, China is banning Korean entertainment, they ban Netflix, RUclips, they block other apps from the USA. They delete fan site of BTS, it is done by government. It is very strange action, I guess Chinese people are fine with it, since they don't let out their voice about it.

I encourage people to travel abroad more to see the world themselves rather than getting information solely from the media. Well, the hatred towards China and chinese people isn't the matter of ignorance of Koreans. It is from the sense of national crisis. China started to become a threat to korea since their intervention in the korean civil war but they had been busy on their own for the rest of 20th century. However they started to insist korean history was part of theirs and since then, one by one they were adding more korean stuff on their ownership list, especially in history and culture. At the sametime, china has been infilating and strengthening their influence in korean society in all directions with their superior moneypower. koreans are now in the crisis of national independence. identical, economical, political.
