This is part 2 of our Korea-Japan relations series. You can watch Part 1 of the series, "What the Japanese think of Korea" here: ruclips.net/video/KNIStfey8oU/видео.html We make these videos to bring together different perspectives and encourage meaningful debate and discussion on difficult issues. But we understand that it's hard to get a large sample size for street interviews so we want to invite you to share your opinions - just make a video of yourself and upload it to RUclips with the title, "Can Korea and Japan Be Friends? #AsianBossOpinions.” You don’t need to be Asian or live in Asia. We will feature the best responses in one of our future videos. Thanks for watching and be respectful to our interviewees and your fellow commenters.

Again, I see that you've made (hopefully unintentional) bad translations (and misinformation), especially when interviewing the 82 year old man.
      1. The interviewer said "the soldiers did in Vietnam War" no mention of "comfort women" since comfort women weren't used by Koreans in the Vietnam war. (Though there were rapes by individual soldiers, no systematic luring/forcing women into sex slavery like Japan did.)
      2. the old man said as far as he's aware, he didn't hear that there was much fuss caused by the Korean army, not the tone of denial in the subtitles. (Though he seems to be obviously uninformed about the matter, since he is very old. Most youth would know this from schooling.)
      3. Although there were many atrocities caused by the Korean Army during the Vietnam war, it shouldn't really be a comparison. The Korean army during the conflict in Vietnam were not encouraged to do any harm to the Vietnamese by the government, whereas the Korean-Japanese relations are mostly sour due to the systematic atrocities imposed by the Japanese Imperial government, whether it be the "Comfort women" (systematic sex slavery), or exploitation of the Korean people/resources, Unit 731 etc. Korean Atrocities in Vietnam were mostly committed on a personal level (rapes, theft etc) or by the local military stationed there (pillaging). Not to excuse the war crimes, but it was during a WAR. And Vietnam war involved heavy guerrilla tactics (which is one of the reasons why it was so controversial, as it was countered with non-discriminatory killings) whereas Japan was never really at war with Korea after the 16th century invasion, but the atrocities were brought on by colonial ideals of Koreans being sub-human.
      4. Korea has apologied to Vietnam on several occasions, albeit the Vietnamese government said that it doesn't require an apology since they've won the war and Korea only partaken in the conflict due to its relations with the USA.

I think Korean like Japanese people, but don't like Japanese government. So do Chinese. So maybe I can understand what Korean thinking about.
So ‎The China & Japan will never have true friendship ( but Japanese people is nice), until the Japanese government honestly admits it's mistakes like Germany does towards Jews.
Chinese know of the scandals of their own government, which has killed tens of millions of Chinese, information only temporarily not released, now more and more public. However, the Japanese government's announcements of Japan's scandals is becoming less and less public. This is different.
The whole world said "Nanking Massacre", only the Japanese government said "Nanking incident". We know too much about the Japanese government's evildoing, but you Japanese people are not clear. Check Wikipedia in English more information.
Have you seen the video about the Japanese prime minister who said, "I'm so sorry” on RUclips? I've only seen the Japanese Prime Minister say "excuse me." They avoid the word "sorry".
In Germany, the Nazi flag is a crime now, but the rising sun flag is still a very important position in japan now. That's the difference. I believe that if Germany were to use Nazi flags as an important position, no country in Europe would forgive Germany. The Asian countries, except China and Korea, forgive Japan because they are too weak and spineless.
BTW, Japanese government not only do bad things like what I said to China, but also did bad things to other Asian countries. But just China & Korea fight for this.

    •  6 лет назад +6

Music Art sure, Japanese let the Korean women live after they done their business, but Korean men cut the Vietnamese women throat after they done their business. Even heard of all the torture methods and the mad killing of Vietnamese Prisoner that American and South Korean committed?

It is the only type of apology the Japanese know how to offer. In Japan, apologies only signal that the giver wants to continue to have a relationship with the receiver. It is a tool used very infrequently. A deep apology from a Japanese (the A side) to a non-Japanese (the B side) is seen as entirely unnecessary.

What she said is "what Korean soldiers did in Vietnam war" and she meant some rape crimes or civilian damage which was committed by some individual soldiers. It's totally different with "comfort women" which was systematically run by Japanese military authorities itself. Korean authorities didn't run comfort women in Vietnam.

    • @busysloth6592
      @busysloth6592 2 года назад +18

This is why Japan bringing up Korea's Vietnamese war crimes to justify their atrocities in WW2 is a nasty move. Japan's comfort woman is an issue of collective slavery and exploitation denying human rights done by Japanese imperial authorities whereas Korean soldiers' rapes and homicides of Vietnamese were an issue of individual war crimes not done by the government. And Korea made apologies to Vietnam for its soldiers' wrongdoings.

It's a story about a Korean prostitute and her owner to the Japanese army, and it's not exploitation or anything. Some of the women may have been forcibly brought in or the money was not paid properly, but it is the responsibility of the Korean owner. The Japanese army gave them a job for the purpose of getting money, but they betrayed them. Adult Japan paid money because Korea made a fuss about the comfort women issue. But the money was also stolen by organizations and governments, not the parties involved. A problem of responsibility only for Koreans from beginning to end.

Something I really appreciate when watching both Japanese and Koreans is that when asked what they think about something they will very carefully respond with, "The media says __" or, "I was taught __". Which conveys a great sense of openness. You don't see much of that in the west anymore.

My thoughts about Japan are like those of majority of Koreans who were interviewed by Asian Boss. Generally, I admire the Japanese people for their attitude, discipline and cleanliness--both in their surroundings and the way they handle their food. On the other hand, since I'm a history major/enthusiast, I'm also aware of the atrocities of the Japanese soldiers against our grandmothers and great grandmothers during World War II like the Korean women experienced with their Japanese colonizers. The Philippines was occupied by Japan for three years and during those three years, I could say that what Japan did to my country and most especially, to our grandmothers and great grandmothers, was extremely unforgivable. Honestly, I don''t understand why the Japanese government don't recognize this fact and SINCERELY apologize to those countries who were victims of their aggression during World War II, especially to the women of these countries. Why not the Japanese government follow the move of the German government that every time a German leader is elected to his/her post, he/she expresses his/her sincerest apologies to the countries and racial groups like the Jews who became victims of the Nazi regime during World War II? Why does the Japanese government not include in their history curriculum the "sins" of their past like the comfort women and the negative effects of their occupation of the different countries throughout Asia like the Philippines (3 years) and Korea (35 years)? One of the Koreans in the Asian Boss interviews was right in saying that the Japanese should their youth about their history based on the "victim's perspective." I know that this move will be embarrassing on the part of the Japanese government. However, how can they move on if they are not brave enough to face their evil past and express their sincerest apologies to their victims during World War II?

Josefus Aleksis Alunan 【 The IWG Report : Japanese Comfort Woman 】 2015
Today, in spite of evidence that the testimonies about the comfort women are baseless, South Korea continues to hang to it and demand a state apology plus a hefty monetary compensation way beyond what Japan offered.
According to the IWG report, the fact that no records have surfaced of war crimes in relation to comfort women indicates the low reliability of the testimony of comfort women.
Meanwhile, South Korea keeps asking Japan to admit to its atrocities, make a state apology and give financial compensation with money taken from the government coffers, while keeping silent on their atrocities in Vietnam and disputing against their own old women who used to be U.S. comfort women .
Until the IWG report is fully dissected, South Korea should control its assault in the face of unverified accounts

    • @lxwv1983
      @lxwv1983 6 лет назад +129

It seems that the two netizens who gave their comments on comfort women are obviously came from the Land of the Rising Sun (correct me if I'm wrong). It is basically natural that these netizens would defend their own country to those people from countries who experienced atrocities during World War II under Japanese rule. This could be the result of sanitizing Japan's history by its government in the eyes of its people. I'm speaking from the victims' perspective and I firmly believe that it's a historical fact that Japan during that time did something bad, or should I say evil, against our grandparents and great grandparents. How would they disregard the fact that Japan then conquered Asian countries like China, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. without doing such atrocities, specifically not recognizing the human rights of their conquered peoples? I'm a history major and I'm confident to tell these things not just from the victims' perspective but also from a historian's perspective.

Josefus Aleksis Alunan i absolutely agree history textbooks should write down what japanese did (obviously facts tho, because many nationalistic koreans and chinese have come up with crazy figures of numbers that never happened) but the whole apologizing constantly is RIDICULOUS. If your great grandfather killed someone, and you were never alive or apart of it, is it really up to you to continue apologizing for the rest of your life what your great grandpa did? no. Get over yourself, modern day germany does not support nazis, just like modern day japan does not support the imperial empire. THINGS CHANGE. god if we bring up every single atrocity committed by any group we would never move on. Japan aided korea by the millions in 1965, they gave reperations to Vietnam. and al countries like vietnam, taiwan, singapore, etc have all forgave japan and they have extremely strong ties. the countries benefit off each other. japan is now the number one investor in vietnam and the vietnamese people have also done a lot for japan. this is what it looks like. please stop telling innocent japanese kids that they should be blamed for atrocities that happened when they were never alive, let alone be a part of. look how close america and japan are today! and notice how all the young koreans mentioned how kind japanese people are. that’s called learning and moving on. yes they should recognize it because it’s history and we should not make the same mistakes ever again. but get over yourself, do you really think japan, where it’s at right now (culturally, socially, physically) would ever try anything like that again? i don’t even know of a country that would.

I'm portuguese and we have a colonial past. I think it's both stupid and irresponsible to be ashamed of your country's past past a certain time frame. For example if someone comes to me about BS regarding Portugal colonizing Brazil (back in 1500) I roll my eyes (specially since the white descendency in that country is more closely related to the colonizers than even I am in most cases. It's disingenuous to say things done there were done by "Portugal", any more than Brazil.
As a contrast though, if I know of something war related back in the 70s when Portugal were fighting in their ex african colonies (Angola, Guine etc)...........then I'm much more inclined to take ownership and feel bad about any harm being done
But mostly.........it's a hypocritial topic since EVERY country was created and born out of blood and violence. And throwing away all positive aspects of your history makes as much sense as an american denouncing EVERYthing in their culture, because they invaded Iraq or Afghanistan. Mindless shame and guilt breed NOTHING positive and only focus on negative aspects.

However, it is fundamentally different from the Japanese military's crime during World War II.
      It happened by "Japanese government"
In the case of the Korean military, it was considered inappropriate behavior by some deviant people(raping, sexual crime), and if rape was detected in combat areas, it was severely punished.
If rape was detected in the battery, he would have been punished severely.
Never run a system to sexual slavery was spearheaded by countries like Japan.
South Korea has never run a state led to sexual slavery, like Japan.
South Korea's military law punishes anyone who rapes, there is no punishment other than death penalty.
In fact, some soldiers were executed for raping.
Between Korea and Vietnam, there are no unresolved past issues.
If the Vietnamese government demands an active investigation, compensation, or apology for its past history, the Korean government has no reason to avoid it.

Korean presidents have expressed regret over Vietnam several times.
      (and it should never stop.)

Hopefully I'll have time to record a video for this sometime because I think it's quite an interesting topic 😊

    • @zenandetwalo2299
      @zenandetwalo2299 6 лет назад +3

paisleyyama Hey :), don't get me wrong, I'm not neglecting the political issues or downplaying them at all. What I mean is that the general public doesn't seem to have dislike towards Japanese people in general.
They infact love them and have good experiences having visited Japan however from a political standpoint they have unresolved resentment towards the country for past doings.
It's like when you have a friend who has deeply wronged you but you choose to move on from it because you feel that it would be better to try and move forward since the person has changed a bit for the better. The only problem is that the person has not apologised appropriately and shown any remorse for what they did or acknowledged that they have done you wrong. So the hurt sits with you and festers overtime and will eventually explode. I think that's what you mean by Political issues eventually leading to future problems and wars.
This is why I think it is good to have these conversations so that people can see how others feel and my only point is that socially for the Korean people there seems to be a sort of open heart to want to build better relations with Japan on condition that they appropriately resolve the political issues.
I just think its a good start that they don't hate Japanese people as a whole ☺️

Being informed WILL change the situation. Being informed is not only about knowing something. When you are fed one-sided information (this doesn't just include South Korea and Japan but many other places not limited to countries) it's often hard to understand why the other party is making those claims, thus causing one to brush them off as insolent and making no room for common ground. But when one does read even a single line of an article, they may start to find fault in the claims of the government, and start questioning things (critical thinking), and when that happens, (it doesn't have to be you scrolling through the comments but) somebody might actually start an effort. So I really think being informed, or even making the effort to BE informed will make a difference... dunno opinions?

Many Japanese and Japanese politicians still say that "Japanese aggression contributed to Korea's modernization," "Japanese Military Sexual Slavery is a prostitute," and "Japan has never invaded Korea." At least the Korean government has correctly acknowledged the sacrifices of Vietnamese civilians, apologizes to Vietnam, and never makes a mockery of their deaths. Korea doesn't even revise history. It is very regrettable that Koreans were sacrificed during the Japanese colonial period for 35 years. 1.3 million Koreans, including Hiroshima, were forced to work abroad, and 6.4 million were forcibly mobilized for coal mines and construction in Korea. More than 10,000 Koreans were massacred in Japan in the Great Kanto Earthquake (the Japan admitted only 6,600). 220,000 Koreans were forcibly recruited and killed, and other victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Victims of biological experiments, and victims were too many to be listed one by one. However, Japanese politicians are changing their words that there was no massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake in May 2023,Japan has designated Gunhamdo (the island where Koreans were forced to work) to UNESCO. Also Japan is putting pressure on each country to remove the comfort women statue.

KevinChoi文 【 The IWG Report :Japanese Comfort Woman 】 2015 Partial excerpt

Honestly, it really is the same anywhere you go. In high school and lower, students don't tend to learn about the atrocities committed by their own government. A lot of the Japanese don't know about what happened during WWII, a lot of Koreans don't seem to know about the comfort women in Vietnam and most Americans don't know about the My Lai Massacre and other atrocities in Vietnam. I would say only Germany is a model in this regard, as they drill into every student's head what Germany did during WWII.

Personally Koreans are my favourite kind of Asians and I love Japanese also. I am not sure I love Thai or Philippines or Indonesians as I found them slippery. I hear a lot of rubbish about China also being an Indian but when I went there in 2007, they were kind, friendly and very disciplined. Of course i went to tier 1 and 2 cities mostly.
