- Today we installed some sweet Powerflex front control arm bushings on my 335i! This has to be one of the best affordable suspension mods you can do, with much better performance than factory rubber bushings, at a fraction of the cost of buying a new set of control arms!

Thats a handy press kit. I've done the same on my e39 and e90. My e90 is xdrive so it's a bit different and the track rod bushings are hard to find. Mad a world of difference over the 100k blown out stock bushings tho!

These are really nice, I had them in my E46 325Xi. The reason people put the M3 control arms in, is for one the Camber is more aggressive, it brings the bottom of the tire out .75 degrees (3/4’s of an inch) negative camber. Plus the other bushing is a spherical ball bearing bushing that moves all around, but is extremely tight! You can buy aftermarket examples like fall line & you can make them even better! I just did a lot to my 135i & I’m going to be doing the M3 control arms..✌🏻💯🏁

I was waiting for a review of the bushings but got one of the turbos instead :). Anyway, i installed these bushings in my M4 and i took them out after one week and reinstalled the SPL solid eccentric aluminium bushes again. I thought thre powerflex ones should be less moisy but they gave the same nvh as the solid SPL's.
I have a E63 M6 that needs thrustarm bushings. Currently debating btw monoball and poly. Idk how hard it would be to press monoball into the arm.
Great video as always Chris! I was thinking about changing the bushings in my E39 Diesel for PU ones (Powerflex or Strongflex). Do you have information or an opinion about PU bushings causing problems in the long run, since they wear less? The bushings are usually the weakest component in the chain, but since PU bushings are much stronger something else might break... Thanks for all your content, its very entertaining and informative :)
Bastian, I haven't experienced any long term disadvantages. I've pulled off old poly bushings that spent years on cars, and showed very little signs of wear. I've seen some people have complained about squeaking bushings, but I think that's why Powerflex includes the silicon grease for installation. I see what you mean about the weak link, but wouldn't be worried about these parts. Glad you enjoy the content!
I have E90 and want to change the front control arm bushing with Lemforder one, just the bushing, is it going to compress with this set that you use?
And my second question is whether this toolset will be right for rear lower control arm ball joint ?
Better than rubber, what's better than poly ? A rose joint ( uniball ). The camber arm is better from M3, the tension strut is good whatever it is, possibly better with poly.

so i need new front control arm bushings on a BMW X1 35I ball joints done @85K, need bushing puller kit Part #, , was leaning to the purple series street driver, sometimes spriited driving and recomemdatations, run flats r rough enough r purples easy to install? use the same bushing tool for E84? x series? sway bar bushings X drives a little different

Nice fix Chris. I will go for these Powerflex bushings when mine are done. Can take a while because I'm on 52k miles. But 12yo so maybe in a year or so... Btw did I miss the turbo rebuilding vid? Dutch regards, Nico.
Nico, you can test the bushings too, see my video where we diagnose all the problems on my car. And yes, we rebuilt the turbos in our last video, go check it out! 😉

if you remove that m badge itl probably add 100hp and make it more reliable
So you did the bushings and the suspension so now you can’t tell what is making the car handle better. The bushings or the suspension.

My rear wheel is doing the same as well. I don’t wanna waste my time getting an alignment if I have to redo everything anyways, I’m at 160 K miles

I just bought a set of PFF5-401 and the bushing is whole, not split in two like the ones in your video. Did you cut them?
No, didn't cut them. I think they updated the design on some of their bushings, but it should come with instructions for your install! Those kind usually needs to be squeezed/pressed in.
If the press is going heavy... put some oil on the bearings

You should apply the grease to the inside of the bushings.... They are grooved to hold the grease. You removed all grease by installing the pins that way and they will squeak and collect dirt in time and premature wear will occur...good vid though 💪
Good thinking, I didn't realize that but it makes sense! Apply it to the polyurethane, not the metal race.
wouldn't the ball joints will still wear out anyway so you have to remove this and re-press them eventually?
Yeah the ball joints will wear out, but you can either get a new joint or a whole new arm, and then transfer the Powerflex from the old one to new one.

I thought your suppose to tighten the suspension when it's at ride height?
Yes, for the factory bushings! That's why I mentioned the "preload", since these bushings don't have a center position, they don't add or need any preload on the suspension. Makes it easier to install :)

It’s ok going for polyurethane bushes but the ball joints ain’t removable and they are known for going bad before the bushings so what’s the point 🤷♂️ 😁
Did you get the washers to fit? was so tight in my f10 had to skip it and then ended up with noises
For the smaller bushing you mean? Yes its tricky to get in, a tight squeeze, but necessary for proper install. Patience and multiple attempts but once you get it installed correct the result is so worth it.
@@TheBimmerBarn you have any tips? Someone told me to use a hammer and flat head
@@Sylverlee I used some big pliers to compress it before I inserted it, but you have to go in at an angle. Once it's in a little, tap it with the hammer softly, and EVENLY. If it starts to go in crooked you're gonna have problems.

Did you need to get an alignment?
Yes it's recommended, although when I did this car I checked the alignment and it wasn't out of spec so it drove pretty straight!

You put the grease thee wrong way, should put it inside the poly, theres groove pater there that will hold the grease, if put on the dowel then it'll be wiped off

What's your diverter/Bov setup?
Factory blow off valves, vented to atmosphere (unplugged from the inlet tubes). Simple quick mod, but makes great noises and isn't too obnoxious!
@@TheBimmerBarn Oh, ok. That's how my car is setup at the moment. I thought you had 2 "hks" style Bovs in place of the diverter valves on the stock chargepipe. I noticed it in the intake valve cleaning video (which I hope to follow along with this afternoon to clean mine).

Yes the are improving steering but vibration Frombork engine ,drivetrain and Road Re felt on the steering and akcelerator . So this mod is for People want to improve performance not comfort. Just SO you have been warned.

The adaptive headlights? I think we're going to code them out, since it seems like a bad module.

ISTA has detected a problem in the left lamp. I will try to replace the module,. I read that it may also be a damaged motor in the lamp.
@@siojtek1 Hmmm, I would try switching the AHL modules from left to right, and see if it follows the module! Then you'll know if its bad, or if you had a bad motor/assembly. ;)

No, these are solid polyurethane 👌
@The Bimmer Barn so we don't race the car, it's my wife's car and she prefers comfort, not necessarily performance would these not be a good alternative?
@@davidpadilla528 she probably wouldn't notice, it's such a slight difference, but if comfort is the focus maybe just stick with rubber bushings.
You said the car "feels taller like it's higher up in the air". That's because it is. You're supposed to torque down the control arm bolts when the suspension is under load. Otherwise the car rides higher and the bushings are under continual preload.
You're right, BUT this only applies to the traditional fixed rubber bushing! The powerflex has a spacer which the bolts torque down into, and it can spin freely inside of the polyurethane bushing. This makes your suspension easier to dial in because now you only have to worry about the loads being put on the struts, not the bushings. Thanks for watching the video and sharing your knowledge!

I'm looking to do for my 2000 e39 but don't want a hard ride. I drive like an old man.
I don't think it makes the ride harder, unless you install stiffer shocks/springs. It may increase road "noise" or vibrations through the steering wheel, which feels more sporty. Hope that makes sense!
Poly is a bad idea , here's why.....
It doesn't return after a load to its original shape like rubber. Some cars your going to get away with it , some your going to basically total your car . I did full powerflex on my mk3 VW build . It had so much nvh I called the junkyard to come get it at that point. Use it on the rear subframe or on the rear shock tower integrated top hat only on a 335i on the rebound or top side. I'm telling you from experience don't do this. Subframe yes , suspension hell no. You'll absolutely regret it and hate the car.
That's why I don't live in Florida.
