Dude I've been delaying my injectors because I couldn't get that German Inpa software to work on my laptop or connect to my OBD. If this app you are using really works, this is a life saver
You failed to mention the importance of how the hold down brackets are orientated when re-installing. They are pre-bent and act as a spring loaded device to soften the impact from the combustion process along with the decoupler rings. If installed upside down, they don't function in that manner and can cause wear in the head bore where the injector fits into, eventually enlarging it, usually into an oval, and cause compression leaks and misfires. If left unchecked and installed wrong, it can, and will, ruin the head.
The spark plugs you replaced with should have been 3 prong Bosch. They were updated from one to three prongs. Great Video. Just replaced my son's e60 with brand new index 12, spark plugs and walnut blast. The car has gained noticeable power gain in all range. Big difference...
I believe he's using gapped colder plugs maybe one step or two step colder. I use two step colder ngk on mine and they are 1 prung which is what's use on these cars when running higher power. The stock ones miss fire at high power.
RJ is correct, I'm using gappable 1 prong plugs. The Bosch 3 prong plugs are OEM, not the best for modified BMWs. Once you start modding, you want the NGK 1 prong plugs to adjust the gap and heat level. But if you're stock, the Bosch 3 prong plugs are fine. Walnut blast is another great maintenance item, glad to hear your son's E60 is feeling much better!
Hey Bro, when you change coils, injectors, and plugs, you really should clear all adaptations so that the DME can restart the fuel settings. Don’t forget to reset throttle pedal throw after you clear all adaptations. This will force a quicker learn than just driving around for 100 miles and letting it smooth out. Peace.
Bob Cooper what advantages does this bring at all? I’ve never seen anybody suggest this after each coil, plug or even injectors change. I’ve done them all on my n54 and never had problems without doing an adapt reset.
I've also never reset adaptations for these maintenance items. However, I don't think it would hurt anything by doing so. If you're troubleshooting issues, it's a good idea to reset adaptations. Otherwise if you're just doing maintenance, I think it's not needed.
For anyone here wanting to do this, please do NOT use Pen caps!! You will cause so many issues down the line with the seals. Even if you have to buy the tools and return them, you're going to kill your engine. People on the E90 forums have complained that this has killed their engine as the seal was not properly on there. 116$ for the tools, 75$ used sounds a lot better than buying a whole new engine or repairing your newly melted head.
doesn’t matter how you do it. as long as you can confirm it is sealing that’s all that matters. these tools work the same way, they are both compressing the seal.
@@delta8447 You're an owner, not a mechanic. Already had to do 4 n54 motors from 23 year old kids using pencaps due to them either breaking the seal or not sealing properly. This is backed by the e90 forums as well. I made various post with photos on the e90 forums due to this. If you wanna use pen caps instead of the "proper" tool then you should sell your car.
I got tired of waiting for a recall for my injectors in a 2007 e90 335i. Installed some new index 12's today using this video. There was a set of "index 1" injectors in the car--Which seemed pretty old. I have owned the car since 2009 and never swapped them. They never had any noticeable issues. I just figured it was time.
Thanks for the information. That was super easy and to think I was about to pay someone to install and code cylinder 4 injector in my car. I will be ordering the required equipment and doing it myself. N54life
I'd probably buy the index 12s new just to avoid a bad seal, this looks just about as easy as spark plugs. protool makes it too easy. thanks for the video
@@insaac I don't think there is much of a market for them. I still have mine. I don't think they're worth anything because they were leaking. If yours are guaranteed to be leak-free, you could try listing them on eBay or the FB groups.
Hey I just wanna day you’ve been a big help to me with learning more about a engine itself and how to take care of it, also me and my ( bro ) plan to buy bmws this summer and I want the same one you have🥺I wanted the 135i first but I can’t afford 400-500$ Insurance for that car a month🤷🏽slow but surely I’m learning a lot more about this care and this fascinating N54 engine💯kinda been in my notes building my own setup as I keep watching your videos, oldest to new👍🏽great help, good guy💯
Hey man! Thanks for watching. I appreciate that and am glad it's inspiring you. Insurance should not be $400-500 per month on a 135i! But keep saving and keep learning, I did the same thing before I finally got into this platform.
Look into a BMW 128i 6MT, if the 135i is too much for insurance. Should be cheaper than a twin turbo rwd coupe lol. Theyre fun and light cars. Plus with a few mods and the oem 330i 3-Stage Intake Manifold, and a tune you'll be t about 300HP crank HP. With a great sounding, quick revving, amd extremely responsive engine in a great chassis. The 128i & 135i share the same chassis and lotss of other parts. They will both handle amazing with the proper mods. For example, a 328i is 230hp, a 330i is 255hp stock, and a 335i is 300hp stock. But a 128i is also 300-400lbs lighter than a 335i. Plus youd be rocking the last, most advanced (Full-VANOS), Naturally Aspirated Inline-6 BMW made after the E46 M3's motor.
Also the correct way is to pull the fuel pump fuse and run the car until it shuts off, then start it a few more times until it won’t run anymore. Never take chances with high pressure lines
So dude, the concern i have is the method of replacing the tip o ring seal. Reason being is because when you buy the set new the seals come installed on the new injectors with a cap on the tip. Once you remove the cap you only have a limited amount of time to plug the injector into the engine until the ring seals EXPANDS by itself! What you have done is expanded them pre maturely, thus i doubt the seals are going to naturally expand to seal properly. Im surprised your buddy at the dealership didn't lend the proper tool for that...
The fact is even with the proper tool, it is still a pen like thing to make it expand first.. same theory... just easier with the 3 tightening metal presser.

Good video Having refurbished and tested dozens of sets of these Injectors, testing the spray patterns, piezo stack integrity and leak testing at 205 bar,the biggest problem with these Injectors is fuel separation that causes the Injector to get sticky and fall out of its original calibration. The fact that you mentioned the symptom got worse in the cold,,points towards the direction of the waxes, varnish and olefiifins that forms during the continuous stop start and heat soak that percolates the fuel and causes the issue in the 1st place. This occurs in any of the index #'s including 12's.
Jake Spence not sure if they are or not. All I know is that my idle is rough with lots of hiccups and I’ve had a misfire in cylinder 6. I was told my code p112f was related to injectors and I need to replace them. How can I determine if the injectors are okay once I remove them? How can I tell they are bad?
Alex Feole just took it to my local BMW shop. Great people, very knowledgeable about 335’s. They said my p112f code was old and only happened once. Likely due to a boost leak. They smoke tested it and found no significant leak and confirmed I probably don’t have injector issues and was mostly likely due to bad e85 and carbon build up. Cylinder 6 is notorious for carbon build up. They recommend a walnut blasting if you are having consistent cylinder 6 misfires. Make sure to swap coils and sparks to make sure it isn’t an ignition issue.
A word of advice to anyone, make sure you don’t strip out the bolt that holds that bracket down. The tech that did my injectors must have stripped it and when I overboosted over 30 psi it blew those 2 injectors out. Luckily I was able to tap a larger size thread on the head and tighten the bracket back down with a larger bolt.
Good reminder. With the proper tools and torque specs, you shouldn't have any issues stripping bolts or threads. But I'm glad you got it fixed, shame that a proper tech would have that issue.
A new(2020) N54 injector recall effects cars made between 2007 - 2008. The dealerships are required to replace all injectors to Index 12. Many dealers do not have have the recall
Justa want to thank you for that video. Very helpful. I’m having a misfire on cylinder 5 on my 2008 535xi I already swapped a plug and coil from another cylinder and still get the misfire. I’m thinking is a leaking injector. Do you think I can just change one injector??
Great video . 👏🏼 can you please let me know why do we have to decoding injectors . What will happens if the mechanic didn’t code my injector ? Thanks a lot
I've been slowly working on the video. It's going to be lumped into the complete suspension overhaul. Right now the video is looking to be 45 mins long or so, maybe even more. Hopefully that's something people want to sit down and watch!
If you don't have one of the 2007-2008 models there is also an extended warranty from BMW for 10 years/120k miles on the fuel injectors. It's listed under "SIB 01 17 15"
Good glear video. Would it be a good idea to lightly grease the mating surface of the injector with ceramic grease before installing? This would make them easier to remove in future. Copper grease is no good as it can cause a reaction with the alumium head.
Jake great job.. You mentioned during video that you bought the injectors on EBay.. REmanufactured is it ok to buy them used. New they are two mortgage payments lol.. If so EBay is where I’ll go to buy them.. Plus couplers?
Are you changing the valve cover gasket, spark plug seals, check the spark plugs to see any oil, and the oil to be on the safe side? Gotta love an oil leak can lead to all kinds of problems.
Jake can you help me and clear thing up for me, If i buy the black market port injection kit would that replace my injectors so I wouldn't have to purchase the expensive index 12 injectors and have room for more power with the additional fuel? I want to replace my old injectors but if buying a new port injection kit upgrade would accomplish the same thing why would people spend 1k+ on index 12 injectors? Thanks for everything you do! love the videos and your channel
Hey man! Good question. The port injection kit just adds 6 additional injectors, it is not a direct replacement for the OEM injectors. Two completely different styles and setups. You need to retain the OEM injectors. Port injectors work in addition to the factory injectors to supply even more fuel.
Hey man I followed all the steps to coding and the engine malfunction light came on. After letting the car warm up and test driving I turned it off and it back on engine malfunction light still comes on. Any guess what it could be?
I believe BMW has extended the warranty on these to 10 years/120kmi. It’s not an official recall, but you have to inquire about it. I think if the injectors are below index 12 they will replace them free of charge.
That warranty is only on certain years, makes and models. My 2009 335i does not qualify. You can check your eligibility here: www.bmw-rp.com/production/bmw/reimbursement_bmw_portal.nsf
Bro wazzup from Wisconsin! Lol I got flamed on facebook buying 8 used ones for $350 on ebay from a auto salvage person with over 8000 feedback. People I think just didnt believe the $350 price tag for 8 used lol.
@@jake_spence Yea was excited to see this he was selling other used parts from this salvaged vehicle so it looked pretty legit along with other higher end salvaged car parts and over 8000 99.8% feedback. Also I use protool to code (very quick). It was like $145 but I needed it to look at some problems after the mosfets i replaced in my MSD80 DME (problem DME unlike the MSD81). Bank 2 injectors must have been stock 08 index because removing them were a very very serious PITA.... I broke the connector on 4 working on getting injector 5 out... Once compressed, I didn't notice the seal expanding any. I filmed this video months ago and the car has been performing great ever since. No issues with install.
Thank you so much for this informative video! Lately my N54 experienced a misfire in cylinder 1 as well as really a rough cold start with frequent hiccups. A local shop couldn't find the issue but I suspect that it's a leaky injector. Could a leaky injector be the cause? I am not getting any fault codes pertaining to the HPFP. New NGK spark plugs and a precision raceworks ignition kit unfortunately did not resolve the issue either.
I have a somewhat similar issue on 3, changed plugs and coil without any change, I replaced the injector seal and decoupler yesterday and it seemed to have fixed it, but today it's misfiring again at start and low rpms. Waiting on a new injector, but hoping that's the issue. I did drive it earlier with some added techron fuel cleaner for about an hour, but still not right at idle. I think mine are index 1 injectors, so prolly need replaced anyway.
Yes, to me it sounds like it could be an injector issue. Hard to pin-point it exactly. But you could let the car sit overnight and then remove the spark plug in the morning and see if it smells of fuel or has fuel on it. If so, I'd bet on an injector.
Mike Davies I’ve had rough cold starts with lots of hiccups lately too. Had a pretty bad misfire in cylinder 6. Got code p112f I believe?? Shop said it’s related to injectors. Exhaust smells of fuel
Just swapped my injector and so far so good. I checked the rough idle in INPA and it was going into the red beforehand, now everything is in sync. Purring like a loud direct injection engine.
Hey mate mine had the same issue its defiently a leaky injector my mechanic swaped injector 6 with injector one and the missfire went from cylinder 6 to 1 so defiently injector
They could be, but I'd just bite the bullet and get index 12 if possible. However, if you for sure have a lifetime warranty on them and don't mind swapping them out, you could get those index 9.
Thankfully , they sent index 12s instead for 350. Unfortunately I broke the bolt that holds the injector bracket so now it’s stuck on the head. Trying to remove it😞
Knowing that I need them, I've been putting off getting the index 12s because of the steep price. This video came at the right time 😅

Happened to me a bit ago, got cross-threaded then bolt broke off in the head.. Time sert is the way to go
Great video! Intimidating upgrade made very simple!
Fantastic video very well done can't wait to do this on my n54 335i
good looks on the info helped me out alot .This was very informative
Can I use a K-can obd II cable with the ap? The one in your link is not available.
Great video i need to replace my injectors on my n43
Yes, I believe you can.
Great job bro👌I didn't even know that you can coding injectors with protool. Time for buying protool 😁
It's been a life-safer for me! Worth it, and you can use it on any BMW, not VIN-locked.
A new(2020) N54 injector recall effects cars made between 2007 - 2008. The dealerships are required to replace all injectors to Index 12. Many dealers do not have have the recall
Yes! This is worth looking into.
Works! Appreciate the video
I have index 6 on my 135, upgrade coming soon i guess. awesome video
You are the best Jake
Justa want to thank you for that video. Very helpful. I’m having a misfire on cylinder 5 on my 2008 535xi I already swapped a plug and coil from another cylinder and still get the misfire. I’m thinking is a leaking injector. Do you think I can just change one injector??
Nice. What Coils do you have... with that red bracket.

Great video . 👏🏼 can you please let me know why do we have to decoding injectors . What will happens if the mechanic didn’t code my injector ?
Thanks a lot
Do you have a video on how to code the battery???
I do! Watch now: ruclips.net/video/QPHUAns5-1Q/видео.html
Ive had to do this before and it works BUT i would spend the $80-90 for the actual installation tools
True, but if someone is in a pinch like I was and didn't have any tools local, this will work.
Best strategy ever.
Screw the actual tool.
Lmao. 😆🤣😂
Hi Jake, you mentioned doing a video on the gasket replacement did you ever make one ??
I couldn’t find 😢
When is the diff swap video coming out?
I've been slowly working on the video. It's going to be lumped into the complete suspension overhaul. Right now the video is looking to be 45 mins long or so, maybe even more. Hopefully that's something people want to sit down and watch!
Nice DIY Jake. And I like this ProTool app. Dutch regards, Nico
@@jake_spence I will be doing the same swap soon, but i wanted to see how it should be done first. :)
There is now a recall on injectors for 2007-2008 n54 models. Not sure the exact months but it's a real recall!
True, definitely worth looking into!
If you don't have one of the 2007-2008 models there is also an extended warranty from BMW for 10 years/120k miles on the fuel injectors. It's listed under "SIB 01 17 15"
So cool your vedio
Many thanks,
Is it correct coding only enter six digit number after new injectors as your video ?
Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Hi mate thank u so much for da amazing video am excited can't wait 2 do mine.. Just one question what happens if I didn't code them?
Good video, I got answer how to code the injectors by protool
but on a more serious note, THANK YOU for the bic pen cap trick!!!! Now that's worth a like, and subscribe!!!
MUCH needed video🙏🏻🙏🏻
Happy to help! Thanks for watching.
Is it bad that i took out the injectors by hand lol. Since i replace the valve cover on mine before that way.
It would be nice you would explain how you have diagnosed that injectors are damaged and not anything else. Any way nice video
True. Inspecting spark plugs after a night of sitting to find them covered in fuel was a tell-tail sign to me.
Great video now i can do it by myself, thanks man.
No problem, that's what the video is for. Happy to help!
Did you find the initial rough running after injectors replaced improved after either the spark plug change or coding of the injectors?
Thank you once again for the great video
No problem Tommy. Thanks for watching!
Hello 🤗 Index 12 works on bmw X5 2011 xdrive35i ?
Are you changing the valve cover gasket, spark plug seals, check the spark plugs to see any oil, and the oil to be on the safe side? Gotta love an oil leak can lead to all kinds of problems.
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but yes, oil leaks are no fun 😒
Jake Spence that makes perfect sense thanks man. Keep up the content 🙂
I am curious what tablet you are using?
Hey man I followed all the steps to coding and the engine malfunction light came on. After letting the car warm up and test driving I turned it off and it back on engine malfunction light still comes on. Any guess what it could be?
Fake index 12s?
I believe BMW has extended the warranty on these to 10 years/120kmi. It’s not an official recall, but you have to inquire about it.
I think if the injectors are below index 12 they will replace them free of charge.
That warranty is only on certain years, makes and models. My 2009 335i does not qualify. You can check your eligibility here: www.bmw-rp.com/production/bmw/reimbursement_bmw_portal.nsf
no recall in UK.... you guys are lucky in US
How did these hold up?
Torque spec is 13nm
the link for the cable didnt work. can you send the link or what the cable part is please. thank you.
Jake I just received index 12's from ebay and they all have the same number!! Good thing or bad thing?
I tried this the pen cap doesn’t work unfortunately the gasket stretched so it does not fit inside the pen cap
In your product description, the cable link to Amzn is broken (the adapter link still works though). What tablet brand did you install Protool on?
Thank you for this helpful video 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video! You're taking the fear out of enjoying these maintenance jobs. Will that pro tool app be used to increase my Boost?
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching. The ProTool app cannot be used to increase your boost. You will need JB4 or MHD for that.
Hey, what cable is that. The link doesn't work. Is it a dkan?
How do you get the cap over the seal when its stretched!
_the link of the programming cable doesnt really work. can you tell me the name of that programming cable that you plug to the obdii port?_
Bro wazzup from Wisconsin! Lol I got flamed on facebook buying 8 used ones for $350 on ebay from a auto salvage person with over 8000 feedback. Has those engraved codes he had other ones out of other cars but wasnt priced by index so when I seen 8 authentic index 12 injectors from i believe a BMW X5M 2010 or 2011... I jumped on it! People I think just didnt believe the $350 price tag for 8 used lol.
That's a great deal! These injectors were used in many different BMWs so there are a lot of chances for index 12s to end up on eBay. Nice score.
@@jake_spence Yea was excited to see this he was selling other used parts from this salvaged vehicle so it looked pretty legit along with other higher end salvaged car parts and over 8000 99.8% feedback. Was out of a 4.4L V8 2010 X5M I think they had like 560 hp not sure if those are turbocharged I would guess with those factory numbers yes... Someone else noted that index 12 was not out in 2010 so they probably had less than 102k on them from the salvaged car they were taken from. Now what to do with the extra 2 lol. I got my solder iron out and replaced a few parts but now have to make it waterproof somehow cuz it would suck if that is junk cuz of a plug on such a expensive injector sought after...
@@jake_spence I was on index 05 and 08 they replaced some in 2011 from the dealer. Car runs like a dream now no more studder after I give it gas after coming down an off ramp and such. Start ups are much smoother now and better mpg (but who drives these for mpg lol)
What tablet are you using please.
Samsung Tab A: amzn.to/2Wb9zzl
Jake Spence thanks, do you have a link to the cable as the link in your description doesn’t load
Jake are you able to remove injectors to clean them, and put them back in without having to replace plastic ring?
Replaced mine not that long ago due to a misfire code, haven't had problems since.
Glad you fixed it!
How is the car running with the injectors now? Need to replace mine because im getting some hesitation on my car.
Great video...!!! It would be nice if you mention the license cost of protool... 👍👍👍
Good point! I can't even remember, I purchased it many months ago.
@@jake_spence around $200 ish, I bought it based on this video
Why can I no longer find the link to the cable you used
Also he said it could mess up a bearing can someone explain how this would happen
Coding Cable: amzn.to/2qGKbl2
OTG USB Adapter: amzn.to/2qKvc9R
Jake Spence first link no longer works it says
What tablet where you using when doing the coding ?
Is it safe to start the engine and check for leaks before coding in the new injectors?
Yes it is.
Hello, is there a time limit that you have before the seal enlarges to much that it won’t fit in the cylinder?
Once compressed, I didn't notice the seal expanding any. I filmed this video months ago and the car has been performing great ever since. No issues with install.
10 min.
How do you release pressure in the fuel rail ?
Im pushing 600whp and trying to pull the trigger buying an index 12 at ebay what you guys think?
How did it go
How am I supposed to use the diagnostic app with an iPad? It appears that is only available in the Google play store.? Help!
Great video, thank you!
Wich models have that injectors from factory? Regards!
Do you think index 9s are good? seen a set of 6 for 350 with lifetime warranty.
Trying to remove it😞
Wow, talk about a score! Sorry to hear about the broken bolt though...
