KTM 380 EXC Built By Someone Else and Blew Up Immediately! Will It Ever Run Again? (Major Problems)

- I work on a KTM 380 to find out what is wrong it. The woodruff key sheared and it ends up being a really bad rebuild. The wrong crankshaft was installed and the motor had to be torn apart.

380 was the last 2T that raced against 4T and got the World GP title
love the 380 looks like you have things under control
I haven't looked up the specs, there may be a difference between SX/MXC and EXC and then there is 300 360 and 380 , I can't remember whether 380 was a bored out 300 or did it have different stroke.
MXC had lighting coil, but EXC had heavier flywheel with a lighting coil, gear ratios are also different between the 3 (like YZ/WR wide-ratio) You may have a hybrid mix of cranks and flywheels that someone thought it will just work. Try lapping the flywheel to the tappered shaft see if you get good contact. If so then unless there is clearance problems it will work. Timing is critical, especially the larger the dispacement goes.
Ohh shit I thought this just came out and it is 2y old.
Wow! Nice diagnostics
Thanks for watching
I have a 380 I’m gonna try to rebuild. Gotta sleeve the cylinder get both cases. Hopefully not the crank. Any luck on finding a proper crank ? Sucks that there is not a whole lot of parts out there for the 380s…
Haven’t been able to find a used crank yet. They are hard to find but hopefully one will pop up on eBay.
@@MarleyJaxGarage I hope for the best. I personally never have seen one pop up all the times I have looked.
I rebuilt my 99 250, got a prox connecting rod, split crank myself, pressed with a few 17mm sockets to line up, brought assembly to bike shop to check trueness, they told me I was better than their jig would do! I just bought a 98 380 that has a broken case, I'm going to try and re-assemble with a 99 case (hydro clutch) hopefully it's all the same otherwise. parts/books look identical/numbers all match.
I just bought a 380 and the guy I got it from said ktm will not sell you a top end kit unless you can provide them a valid vin. Apperantly the 250 and 300 has same bottom end and they didn’t want people swapping the heads.
Yap....not much parts ....they want you to buy the new TPI 300 SX....
I would have that flywheel in my lathe...boom...
Problem solved...
that is a2k-3 flywheel and stator it will work with no washer but that came off a newer 300 you just have to counter sink the flywheel, that stator is the best upgrade if done right, who ever did this engine
is a moron.
Have you done it before? Any other advice? It’s weird that the guy only sent his motor off, I didn’t think the cdi would be compatible.
Right on Tim...your smart...
My 1998 380 MXC...is a pain to start...
And there are no new CDI...
Maybe I will upgrade and install new CDI....
This guys bike ....what kind of oil was that?...
wtf did I just watch, that poor bike
Yea it was rough for sure.
Sounds like a basket case to me..
Yes it was a complete basket case. I have never seen a bike put together so badly. I knew when it got dropped off with a bag of bolts and washers that were on it before the rebuild it was going to be a bad time.
