It's actually a 300 bored to 380 so really they never technically made a 380.
@@yunoae3 They did make a 380 but it was only for 2 years. 97 and 98. A buddy of mine had one. Wish they still made a 380.

@@yunoae3 I don't always get it right either brother. Just happen to know about that bike. Don't know why they shelved it, but in todays market with the rise in two strokes again, it may do better. I got a 300XC and it's a great bike but to have it in a 380 would be pretty cool. Not too much power, but more than enough.

A friend has one that was made street legal and converted to a supermoto setup. Its got a 15/42 gearing and it probably does well over 100mph. What a awesome bike.
Should easily do over 100 mph. My ktm 525 exc supermoto running 15-42 ran like 115mph downhill and changed gearing to 14-42 and still tops out around 105mph... Didn't want to pull to 115mph on flat tho not enough hp stock at them speeds to pull
@@gixxer7907 ya i had a 05' 400 exc , stock everything it was a 6 speed, it hit 90 no problem, with tall gears it would probably do 100

I am just going through my 2001 380 EXC, I will go through it from top to bottom. Certain parts are getting hard to find for certain things on the bikes but you can still find a fair bit of Ebay stuff.
I loved my old 380 race bikes so this should be a sweet resto.
I was a kid riding my 86 kx80 when I rode with dads friend who had this monsta watched him climb rock hills like nothing love this channel the best of the best kap.

I had a 99 way back when. Mine was kind of beat when I got it but still had ton's of power. It used to die when you turned the bars(front wheel). Sold it with the problem for a profit though. I would love one now, same as the Husq WS430 I had. I wished I realized what these things would sell for these days. $20 k for a CR500??, nutz I tell ya
I have a 98 300 Mxc .the 98/99 hade more low end hit very fun.

KTM does build a nice machine, you guys brought it back to it's factory condition. Pretty impressive it has 55HP, but does it want to rip the bars out of your hands like a 500. CR or KX500 sure has a lot of torque.👍

Beautiful! I owned a 380Exc for many years. It was a nice mix of power, exactly as you say, a 250 with more balls. It did not have the mid-range torque of a well prepped CR500, but instead, revved more to make it's HP. In a neighborhood race, with local CR500's and KX500's the KTM was very close. Mine would top out at 80MPH, but that took taller gearing. Despite multiple attempts, a complete overhaul, a change in combustion chamber shape (tighter squish) and a new carb, mine never ran cleanly at lower RPM's (such as woods riding) and would exhibit both lean and rich characteristics at the same time. This is a known issue with them, and I was unable to dial it out.
I had a 99 380 and my mate had a cr500 moded into an crf alloy frame there was nothing in it drag racing up hill flat was neck and neck i fixed the jetting with total rebuild fmf grarly pipe and 2 base gaskets to lower compression it ran sweat from sea level up to around 1800 metres riding super tech single track to massive high country hill climbs that you would be on the gas for sometimes 20 minutes it was deffinately a weapon but it wrecked my hands i aggree i think the 380 was better than the cr500 as it still revved like a 300 always wondererd what a 500 with a power valve would be like ha ha .
The stock needles in the carb are the wrong profile and mixtures would be off at 1/4 throttle if you had it right at 1/2 - 3/4 throttle. I replaced mine with a JD needle and ironed out that low throttle issue. It has other work, ports blended, Gnarly pipe, PWK bored to 39.5mm, very fast bike, I still own it
You run a shorter rear shock on these bikes to give you more rake on the forks coming into corners to try and get them handling better.

I have a 99 ktm 300sx big bore that bike rips 2 stroke's for life.

@@pooch299 I'm not saying it wasn't fast, it was a pristine bike, I've also owned an 01 cr500 and I currently race a 2020 yz450f.
My 16 450 was a hell of a lot faster on the top end then the 380 or the cr, but they both had insane mid range.
People never realize how much top end new 450s have because they make so much usable power that you rarely actually get into the top end.

55hp is a beast for this 380? That's cute. The big 450s make 60+. The CRF450R makes 63 stock.
Those have been my dream bike since i was a little kid. we used to drop off my mini50cc ktm at the shop and the guy would have brand new 380's sitting there. they where huge to me then..LOL......someday im gonna get myself one for sure.

I have a 98 ktm Sx 125. That I will rebuild over time. I hope to have it going at the summer. Last start was after my dad bought it with no oil in to me 2011. I was like this will need a total rebuild. One fixed the stator and fixed with oil and water/ glycol. And it started at first kick. The clutch didn't work,and the shifter didn't work to change gear with. So we needed to hold gas at the same time I started it to be able to test run it. It work to drive. But the condition of the motor I don't know. Now when it have had oil in the motor for 9 years it works to change gears. I have thought of fixing the clutch and change piston and test start it. But I don't know if it's a good idea. I think the most expensive will be to fix the suspension. The cycle is love In the back and soft front fork. I need will be very lucky if that motor won't leak or anything. But I will probably go through the motor with someone,and change the main bearings and all gaskets. The last time I started it I didn't heard any strange sounds from the motor. But there may be very few hours left on those bearings. I have opened and looked at the clutch basket and saw at that time that they had done silicone seal. That I hope they haven't done with the whole motor. It looks the bike have been going through a lot with all the previous owners
Tank and shrouds have been swapped out to newer 02-07 style. Looks way better
Would look killer with the 2004-2006 subframe/rear fender combo as long as front fender and number plate.

Does that smell like the old Castrol R30 vege oil? They banned it because it poisoned riders behind whoever was using it. I loved the smell of it and used only that in my 82 and 83 CR 480s. Brilliant stuff.

I had a 1999 and yeah it was a beast.
My friend has one and many other macos and huskies.. the 380 never liked to be kicked over. Jump started down hill every time. As fast as my crf 450r 03 .
That’s weird my 380 kicks over fine. Just gotta be careful when it does start it will kick back like a horse lol.
Fuel mixtures are wrong then, they take a bit of force to kick, but there should be few issues, choke, 2 kicks, bang. It'll be pilot jet/airbleed adjustment

I actually owned one of these, check out the vid on my channel of it! I traded a beat to snot Honda crf 230f and $300 cash for the KTM monster but unfortunately I'd never ridden dirtbike much I'm more of quad kinda guy so I never even rode the ktm not once and I eventually traded it for a mint 1 owner 08 Honda 400ex that had a ton of upgrades! I rode that Honda for 6yrs without a single issue then I sold it for $3,500 cash.... But now that I know what these KTM 380's are I wished I'd have kept it it went nicely with my quadzilla 😋

All the 380s ive owned were junk. Timing and jetting were a daily issue. My 300exc was way better. Same year.
