Wagons my family had (I drove them all): 1963 Chevy Impala, big V8, dark metallic green with a white roof. 1972 Chevy Kingswood Estate, big V8, turd brown with fake wood and clamshell tailgate 1977 VW Dasher Wagon, also turd brown, fun little car to fling about Wagons my wife and I have owned: 1990 Volvo 760 Turbo Wagon, silver, self-levelling shocks - it was an unreliable beast and yet one of our favorite cars. Hauled our dog to agility and dog shows in style 2001 Subaru Outback, dark green with beige panels. Good car, fun to drive with the fulltime FWD - transmission failed around ten years. No wagon right now, but an ID7 wagon would get my attention.
The MEB platform is rear wheel drive based. The MEB Light platform is front wheel drive only. The ID.2 All is fantastic and a shame if the US doesn't get it. I would place an order today if they made it available. I have a lease on the ID.4 because I knew in a few years the battery and motor research will make the EVs of today seem out of date. Sure the software could be better but 95% of the time it works fine. I think the ID.7 looks great and will look at that when my lease it up.
You have to wonder how long Tesla can keep powering on as basically a one model pony. In Germany, the top 5 BEV brands last month are VW, Tesla, MB, BMW, Audi. With VW out selling Tesla 2 to one. Then add Audi and it's VAG by a mile.
We too love our ID.4 and the way it looks! The higher back cargo is great for Dog crates and folding bicycles. It’s quite efficient in town too. We have the RWD as I agree the AWD in our climate (Dallas,TX) is not needed and there is price to pay in cost, efficiency, range, and turning radius.
Most SUVs would look a lot like a station wagon if they lowered the body and reclined the seats a bit, allowing a lower roof. I used to have a minivan, and I have often been suprised how much better the use of space is, when compared to an SUV. Yes, I think station wagons will be the new, better SUVs of the future.
How long has it been since we've had a rear wheel drive station wagon in the USA? The big roadmasters and caprice wagons went extinct in the '90s. Maybe the last ones were BMW 3 and 5 series wagons in the early 20-aughts before half of their lineup was trucks? It's about time we got another longroof that isn't pretending to be a SUV.
I own pick up trucks and cars that were like station wagon like Ford Fiesta. Love the room to transport materials. I also owned a Chet Saturn SW2 station wagon. This wagon was so useful also for carrying material goods. Yes Station Wagons are practical-> great idea from VW. Tesla should do the same. Build a practical car to be used to easily transport items. If the station wagon and a retractable roof. You could use as a pick-up truck for talker items. Design is important
I drive a FWD 2005 Toyota Avalon on BLM / Forest Service roads several weekends each month and would love to have an AWD SUV EV with suspension raising options as some roads are off limits to me or require moving rocks that are two large to drive over. The higher cargo back allows for better space management.
I like it too, but my ideal car would be a notch smaller. If this is the equivalent of a Passat Kombi, my ideal car is Golf kombi. Something like the electric Opel Astra that has been coming for ever, bur never seems to arrive.
I like it. 😅 Had a wagon as my very first car, at age 15-16. With an 86kW battery, if it could get to Tesla M3 efficiency, it might get 320 - 330 miles. 😂 Over 400+ miles? I’ll believe it when I see it…..
Hey Sam, I just watched a documentary about the rise and fall of electric vehicles from 1904 to 1914. It's from the Studebaker National Museum channel. It's called "Wired: the rise and fall of electric cars". I don't know if you have an interest in doing a vlog about ev history but it's pretty fascinating.
Although i couldn't buy any car very expensive in my country, VW or german brands are my best and wagons or hutchback cars are my preference and EVs. i hope they can survive with chinese competitors.
I have trouble keeping up which ID number is which. They look so much the same I have trouble ID-ing them. 😊. Be interesting to see if they used the same architrave as on the EQ4 thingy. Sandy Munro took a close up look at the US version of that, and it was very surprising (no battery heater, and rear drum brakes to mention a couple). Station wagons are much more practical than SUVs, if you don’t need the high ride. This one is rather large though, but perhaps they have plans for a smaller ID (insert number here) that will also be a wagon. Maybe that will be the practical model.
The ID version of a Golf Station Wagon WILL be the killer VW car in Europe. That has been one of the best selling cars around here. I know I'd switch my 3008 peugeot SUV to my previous Golf Variant/Station wagon any day. It was just a better and reasonable vehicle.
"Production models" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_ID._series#:~:text=Production%20models Looks acceptable. No way near the Mercedes family naming scheme.
To me it’s a tossup between the IDBuzz and the ID9. Most EVs don’t corner well because of the weight. I wonder how this one will perform. Any way I can’t afford any one of them…🙄
Let's hope they don't cram it full with too many electronics that cost a fortune to fix after the warranty runs out. Older EV's can too easily bankrupt people.
Sure, but how did people in snowy areas manage before SUVs? They actually managed just fine with conventional cars. Practically no one NEEDS an SUV and even with full electrification they are still a waste of resources.
SUV is such a catch all for non-sedans. Plenty of people don't want to get a low level car due to knee or back problems. Many sedans are just small - I bang my knees on the central screen on a Tesla 3 as a passenger. SUVs have much more practical boot spaces (Tesla 3 is ridiculous for a family holiday, or anyone with a baby pram) I'll never buy a 3 but a Y is much more my size and shape.
VW are currently the third largest EV seller. They are competing very closely with Hyundai and if Geely was properly focused on EVs they could also be in that race for 3rd. They are doing just enough to keep thier place in the global car race. If I was to grade them I'd give them a C not a leader and not falling behind either.
1920 horse meat was cheap and available. 2020 spare parts and wreckers parts may be widely available. Australia has 20million vehicles and 1million new vehicles annually. So, 20 years to replace all ICE vehicles ? ? Or 2 years to replace 1 in 10 with rented vehicles ? ?
SUV's are great in daily use, if you don't use it merely for fast and long distances. Just more ground clearance....easy to entry/exit....great overview and sitting position....not this tight feeling inside
Unless the price is very good I am going to cancel my Cybertruck reservation and buy an electric van instead. One dumb design Kona EV is enough, the next EV must have a lot more space. Vans can be very aerodynamic especially relative to volume.
It is interesting to me that EV'S are lacking in this space outside of China. What does China have in EV for station wagon or real SUV? We did like our VW Passat years ago. After that, the KIA Soul was good. We cannot get that in Texas as an EV.
For some reason station wagons don't sell well in the US. Even when they are really cool and powerful. Maybe the cargo height is important for some reason or customers just don't like the look. VW should have no competition in that body style if they bring it to the US.
While Tesla and BYD get all the headlines, I think VW is quietly creating some very appealing EVs. The software thing is overblown. The latest software is perfectly fine, and they are taking steps to make it better.
The steps they are taking to make it better include firing many of their software engineers and disbanding their software Cariad division? Is that what you mean?
@@GregHassler Yes, that is what I was referring to. Speaking of software, one thing I like about VW's approach is that they support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, unlike Tesla, Rivian, and now GM.
You're a disruptor on YT, which is good! ... 90% of what you say is complete bullshit. But the the rest of the 10% is worth listening to. BTW I have spent my entire working life in the auto industry at quite a senior level. Keep it up.
Best looking VW EV?? 😂😂 That is not saying much. It’s a concept car so they fantasise freely. Range will be sub 400km. It’s going to be complete rubbish. Sloping roofline so very little useful space. A normal ice Audi Q7 can’t fit 4 large suitcases without folding the seats despite being a huge very heavy SUV.😂😂
I love the way my ID.4 looks.
Really?
I completely agree with you! Would love to see this car in Northern America!
Love the looks of ID.3 and ID.4! They were the reason I got interested in EVs and actually bought one (ID.4)

Black model3 performance looks very good. 🤗
Also a wagon guy I must say - to me it is also the best VW EV jet.

Love wagons. My last car was the golf Alltrack and I sold it until I can get electric
around 700km WLTP in id7 (aero vision /liftback) RWD with 86(92)kwh battery back, probably sth like 650km for station wagon

Station wagons suit our family’s activities perfectly. Can’t wait to see this car in Canada! For me id7 over the Y!
Europeans love station wagons/sport wagons...

The demise of the wagon in North America is really lamentable.

I want a wagon. Why don't people like wagons.
ID7 will be a wagon, just coming a bit after.

Sam most people that I know have an SUV because they are higher, much Easier get in and out of.
I thought the Dodge magnum was a brilliant car. This looks like an electric version of that. I hope they make it.
I would rather a plug in hybrid Subaru Outback.

I like more the Audi A6 e-tron wagon

suv is the best form for a car imo, thats what people want, rightfullly so.
it has nothing to do with offroading.
Old people love SUV's as they are easy to get in and out off......... It's right at the top of the list!
👍

An EV wagon is perfect.
it will weigh 1000lbs more than a comparable Tesla. . .
And cost $70k for a long range version!
Why I like SUV? High road clearance. I cannot get into a model 3 because it’s too low. Hence I got the model y
