My dream came true!
Next step: go to his house and hang out.
The Anime Man Joey ask them to push blue exorcist it's slow as shit
The Anime Man another you know Japanese why don't you speak in Japanese and put subtitles
it was a live interview, so people wouldn't understand
The Anime Man my dream is to meet my waifu in real life!!!
You need to interview more mangaka instead of light novelists.
Love ur videos!!
I could just imagine Joey dying on the inside, wanting to speak in Japanese but not being able to.
Psycho Satsujin why cant he
yeah why can't he?
flowir because It's live and people who view Joey's live wouldnt understand
I think it's because it's a live stream for mainly english viewers, as well that Inio Asano is on an english VIZ media, which is an english platform. If he spoke in japanese, they would need subtitles, which they can't have in real time.
SaltyLee ohhh ok thanks man
Must've been awkward watching her translate when you already understood everything
And yes I know its for the viewers
Ikr
Relate
She did a phenomenal job tho
@@lelouchyagami703 Damn you're pretty sharp
for as depressing as punpun is "MY BRAIN SQUIRTED OUT OF MY WIENER!!" will never not make me spit out my drink.
Later when he started crying and hugged Aiko from the back I was hoping he'd say "my brain is squirting out of my eyes"
@@dontworryhouston bruh that's cannon for me now
Joey: *Fanboying on the inside, but looks so calm on the outside*
Aminaminu 01 You can see it in his eyes how badly he wants to directly speak to him in Japanese and it's so funny to me.
He's just sleepy
Man, getting to interview Inio Asano is pretty damn insane.
A big part of what I like about Inio Asano’s work is that it depicts things like sex, violence, despair etc. in a way that feels real and doesn’t shy away from them. It is sometimes very frustrating with a lot of anime and manga that the characters and stories feel too cute and innocent to be relatable. Oyasumi Punpun I would say is my favorite work of Asano’s. Definitely go to his house and report back if you get the chance!
That's not the other manga's fault. they're not trying to go for what inio asano is.
@@asscake1849 that’s not what he was trying to say. His point was the fact that good night pun pun came from a real life point of view and not many mangas tend to do that.
@@Bluurji but it's not true many manga out there do that
Everyone go read "Good Night
punpun"
thats a questionable statement, punpun is just too... out there to just blankly recommend to everyone. For some it's too much.
also I actually finished reading oyasumi punpun as I saw this video so I still feel the depression very vividly. It hurts.
Babylon Gaming i feel you
I just did, and somehow I feel like life looks different..
I have......... I cried
The translator did a pretty good job though, she didn't try being too literal and kept it natural
yeah I was really impressed I would have failed so badly if I were in her shoes
Just a note: She's an interpreter! :D Translators work with texts and written language, interpreters work verbally. :)
@@thairinkhudr4259 :D
Joey looks like japanese jesus
Orene Took me a solid second to understand what you said. But he does look Ike Japanese Jesus.
Rosaku Boleznennyesladkij yeah, I didn’t specify that I was talking about the interview
lol I just bursted out reading that
Orene lol read this at first as “Joey looks Japanese, Jesus”
Japanese jeasus
I actually met Asano Sensei at the signing and got the first volume of Goodnight Punpun signed. My conversation between me and him went like this:
Me: Hi.
Asano Sensei: Hi.
Signed Goodnight Punpun Vol. 1*
Us: Took pictures*
That's how it went. I was so shy starting a conversation with him, but it's one of my most treasured conversations I had in a while.
me_irl
Damn lucky bastard
Wow, where was the signing? I'd be so honored to meet Asano-sensei if possible!
I wouldn't even be able to to say hi probably, much less go to the event
Hi
Goodnight Pun Pun is such a painful experience, especially when you're reading it at what you feel is your lowest point. It's painful, but beautiful, and honestly that's why I hold Inio Asano as one of my top favorite manga artists. This man took something that could be beautiful, tore it apart, put it back together, then proceeded to beat it with a metal bat before bringing it back and making it beautiful. It's such a crazy trip, so chaotic and heart wrenching but you just can't look away, like a car crash. It's so amazing, I already finished it online but if I got the chance, I'd buy the physical copies just to have something to read on repeat no matter where I am, with or without wifi
I love Oyasumi Punpun SOOO fkn much! I just cosplayed Punpun last month on Japantag, (Germany) and through that was able to finally find some people to talk to about the manga...
DerTomatenToaster - JRPGs, VNs & mehr! Omg fr?? I wanna see it so baddddd I did a cosplay of aiko and no one recognized me.
@@mio9682 are there pictures of your cosplay?
*Living Is Harder Than Dying*
That's What I Believe the message was of PunPun
And maybe that's why we do it
thanks so much for uploading this interview! And I'm honestly kind of jealous that you were able to actually talk to him because he's definitely my favorite mangaka next to Ai Yazawa. I adored Goodnight Punpun and Solanin, and I also really enjoyed his one-shot Bakemono Recchan and A Girl on the Shore.
April Clevinger dude they are my two favorites tooooo lmao
I’m so late but I love her too!! She talks about a lot of human relationships and depressing shit

Go to bed, Pum Pum.
Pun pun* you uneducated noodle, no offense
Restwell PumPum>Oyasumi PunPun
I have no idea how someone would be able to write something like what Asano-sensei does. No other manga passes an emotion the same way his work does, it's scary how realistic it is.
i agree
Him saying he worrys about his readers shows how in touch and empathetic he is. not that we didn’t already know that from his work
Gotta love how Inio Asana was the one in Toronto and Joe's in Japan instead.
omg thank you SO MUCH for sharing this interview!
solanin is my first Inio Asano's work. he's awesome!
Inio Asano is pretty good looking! I've never seen him before so he's just nice to look at, I mean. Amazing job getting a interview with him. Congratulations! ❤
I almost cry at the last part. I love when you do these interviews, as an artist this is an unvaluable source of inspiration and hope.
A excelent interview to an excelent artist. I'm so glad you got to talk to him. Now I hope you two can meet in Japan next time! I can already see the pictures on your instagram! XD
OMG he's one of my favourite mangaka! I've read Oyasumi Punpun (even cosplayed Punpun) and Solanin and now I'm reading DDDD. Thank you for uploading the interview here, I was so sad I didn't get to watch it on insta.
How did you cosplay punpun?
Negar Kzm just black jeans, black and white striped tee, short black wig, black horns, white eyepatch
Hoshiko ha that works .i thought you cosplayed the bird . Guess that’s impossible
Negar Kzm yeah haha I've never seen anyone cosplay his bird form but I guess there should be a way to do it
AHHHHH!! ❤❤❤❤ Oh god Joey how did you manage to even let a word out without shaking, Inio Asano is amazing!! I'm so glad I subscribed to you! I'm getting a oyasumi punpun tattoo soon too, what a nice incentive 😄
I like his manga "A girl on the shore" ❤
Your manga is SHIT
@@OombaPoomba tf?
@@Mondscheinelfe it's probably a reference to the manga
I'm about halfway through it currently!
@@ILLSEEYOUIN10 lmao it is?
This is so amazing, I love to see someone with such a large following and such influence in the anime community bumping such an amazing artist and writer like asano Inio. Keep fighting the good fight
PROTECT INIO'S SMILE AT ALL COSTS
I’m gonna die of happiness. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the thumbnail 😭 Thank you, Joey!
Freakin love this channel
Oh my god! I've read The Girl on the Shore a while ago and decided to check out Oyasumi Punpun after hearing so much about it. I just finished reading it a few days ago and I was quite literally at a loss for words. I told my boyfriend that reading Punpun was like someone breaking your heart to utter pieces and you get to the end of the manga, and it's like the broken pieces were haphazardly glued back together. So you're not 100% okay, but you'll live. I'm SO happy you got to have this opportunity, Joey! I'm EXCITED.
Omg I love inio asano! You got me into him and I've loved him ever since oyasumi punpun
I can't decribe in words how much I love Asano sensei's work
Inio Asano is a great artist. You should TOTALLY make more videos about him!
I absolutely LOVE his manga I can’t believe I missed this live stream! 😩
Thanks for the re-upload 👍
awesome interview !! i wanna re-read punpun now :)
I fucking love A Girl on the Shore, its amazing, its my favorite one shot manga ever.
I've been hoping for this video!!!
OH MY GOSH!
Inio Asano is an all time favorite of mine. A Girl on the Shore was one of the first manga's I ever read. Ever. You are so lucky to have had this opportunity, and you handled it wonderfully.
When I saw this notification my heart almost stopped!
Oyasami Punpun is my favourite manga of all time and no matter how cheesy it might sound it actually changed my view on life in so many ways!
It's a manga I recommend to everyone who asks me for recommendations because I think it's a masterpiece that everyone should read!
Yes!!!! So stoked for this interview ^.^ thanks Joey
1) How have I never seen this video on your channel?
and
2) The fact that there is "only" 131k views on this is so fucking unfortunate.
This man's various manga can speak across so many generational boundaries.
Edit:
Just finished the vid lol and uhhhh idk tbh. I thought I like Punpun the most (I still have it rated the highest of his manga) but lately Solanin is calling out to me more. I think it's because I'm getting older tbh lol
Fr I found this video by typing Anime man inio asano
I bought this manga after hearing your review on it, very happy, its as good as it sounds!
This interview is pure gold. Thanks!
Finally! I've been waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you, Joey!
I read Oyasumi Punpun online in 2015. It was a tough read for me and i had to stop reading it a few times cause it was such a new, anxious experience. But each time i dropped it, i found myself picking it up later on. And now that the english release came out i have been collecting them all and rereading it again. It is such a painfully relatable, sad story. I love the way the characters are and how Punpun's simple looks can make the reader relate to him at times..overall, Punpun is a lovely work and i recommend it. The more i read Asano's work and each time i finish a series, i get this empty feeling. His works are powerful and can truly make a reader think about their own life or the deeper meaning of the story that they had just read (i had a mindblowing experience once i delved deeper into the story of Umibe no Onnanoko, which i also wrote a review of)
Thanks for the interview, would love to see more! Nice of you for uploading it, my personal favourite work is Solanin
Thank you Joey, very cool.
If I wasn't so lazy and incompetent I'd definitely read his work
you sound like you are one of his characters
If I can do it. You can too.
If you want to read something a little easier, read Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction. Goodnight Punpun is pretty hard to read, as well as A Girl On The Shore, but if you have the stomach to read it, then go ahead.
you definitely should. you might even be inspired to stop being lazy after reading punpun
Lmao
I just finished reading Oyasumi Punpun, probably 5 mins ago and here i am gonna watch this, this is interesting
Same. One of the most beautiful stories I've ever read but it fucking hurts like hell 😢.
@@brasteen1 ya ur right it's a masterpiece
I feel so blessed to be able to see this interview, his stories hold a special place in my heat
Yasss 😃 I've been waiting for this video to come out for so long
Oyasumi punpun is one of those works of art that had such a strong impact on me. After that I read Solanin and Girl on the shore and I plan to read all his other works, they really are something else
Thank you so much! The interview is magnificent *-*
More of inio asano content please!!
and thank youuu! I loved his last comment "remember who you were at this time" TT
Damn man, how could I possibly miss this? Thanks for the video
There's so many interview that you're doing and it's awesome :3 please keep up these videos Joey
Dude, Joey I've been waiting for this since a long timeee
I've been waiting for this for so long, I love this manga.
And not only is it beautiful, it is poetic from page to page, I never cry while reading and this manga made me produce tears, each and every chapter, sometimes a chapter is so good I go back and reread it.
I can't relate to a drowning man because I am also drowning myself.
I guess I'll have to wait until I reach shore and look back on this manga to re-read it and actually sympathize with it.
Right now, it just makes me even more depressed.
Aiko's story was too tragic for me, I couldn't even cry. I just became afraid of closing my eyes.
I can't believe how much our taste is in common, I love almost everything Inio Asano and you also made a video about the Manga I"S".
I have liked them for years and only recently found your channel! You're interviewing Inio Asano!
After finishing oyasumi punpun this made me realized the authors perspective
i was waiting for this so much!! i love asano inio!!
Pun pun was an amazing ride for me. I hope inio asano makes more of these types of mangas because its just beautiful. Btw good job on that interview papa joey
Yees I've been waiting for this
THIS IS HEAVEN-SENT!! THANKSSSS
This video was a treat
Please do more videos on Asano Inio! Also... You were the one who introduced me to his work - so thank you.
That’s so cool ! Must’ve been really fun !!
Inio Asano is my favourite manga artist! Thank you so much for this interview~
Me: "Wow, an interview with Asano Inio and it's in English. Gotta watch this."
*few moments later*
Me: "Oh, it's not quite in English, but all right."
*sees translator pro*
Me: "That... that's amazing. How does she translate and keep listening at the same time?"
Seriously though, I came here for the interview and what I got was mad respect for real time translators xD
And like, it's kinda amazing how, like, she does it all so, like, well. Still, really good job :)
For now I've only read Solanin and Bakemono Recchan from Asano Inio, but I'm planing to read Oyasumi Pun Pun and Dededede Destruction at some point.
so what did you think?
I appreciate your politeness with the translator. You always responded to the translator and not speak in Japanese, which was very professional of you, especially considering how late you were up! Good interview!
Thanks for sharing the interview, I love Inio Asano's work! I think my favorite manga is solanin
I nenenenenever clicked faster
Man, I really need to get back into reading manga.
Not too sure, but maybe it’s because I’d mostly read it online through OneManga. Knowing me, when that went down years ago, I probably just didn’t look for an alternative.
I'm losing my shit and I'm not even the one interviewing him. I can only imagine what Joey felt.
It is amazing you got to do this interview. Asano is a genius. I would love to see you interview other mangakas, and I know this can be very difficult considering how private they are, but would also be amazing to see.
I love his manga. So cool you got to interview him.
I LOVE HIS WORKS!! Currently reading Goodnight Punpun and finished Girl on the Shore and what he recommended here which is Reiraku/Downfall (yes, it’s already translated. So good!) Thanks for sharing this interview 💗
Oyasumi pun pun for sure is my favorite manga, I just love how he shows his view of the world through his drawings. I’m almost finished with reiraku actually, since I got hooked into it.
i’ve waited my whole life for this
OMG Congratulations Joey! You are the one who introduced me to this amazing mangaka (through your recommendations) and am very happy to see that you have been given this extremely rare chance :)
OMFG I WANTED THIS SO BAD THANK YOU
Pupun is the manga that took me years to finish not because it’s bad or slow
It’s because of how it makes me feel after reading just 1 chapter
It depressed me it crippled me sometimes but i still love it however i will never go back to read it’s my number 1 manga but never again...
mohamed asaad Same! It took me so long to finish it but it became one of my all time favourites.
thats funny because I binge read the whole thing in two days. amazing manga!
funny because i finished it in less than a day and i'm 13. oh shit i hope i don't become depressed in the future and get flashbacks to this LOL
Man i just subbed to your channel because you are an inio asano fan i had seen a bunch of your videos before but now i respect you way more than before . You read good shit
Congratulations Joey! :3
This was awesome! I love Asano, more vids about him in any way or fashion would so dope. It'd be really cool if you could interview Tsutomu Nihei as well!!
Awesome translator 👏🏻
I was pretty jazzed to see this. I'm a casual anime fan (which is why I recently subbed your channel) but avid graphic novel critic. Asano has been personal favourite of mine since about 2009 and I have all his US-released work. So far I've found Girl On The Shore the most personally meaningful of his works (if you read American manga crit, you may have encountered my review), but also that Solanin epilogue that just came out (which felt like a kind of Before Sunset reevaluation of the previous work) was pretty special treat for longtime fans.
Anyway, thanks for putting this up. It was a nice surprise for me on a Tuesday afternoon.
Thank you for uploading this! I felt like shit because I missed it cause the livestream was 3am here.
One of my favourite channels!!
That was a fun interview. I haven’t read any of his manga, but I’m interested his manga. I’ll definitely look some up.
I recently picked up girl on the shore and it made me insta fan then and there. I love his stories and artwork! You're so lucky
I'd love to see more interviews in the future please
I'm so glad I follow you on Instagram, cause of could get the heads up of this video. I also missed this live stream
Goodnight PunPun changed my vision of a good manga. The ones you mention definitely rank high as well. Such an interesting work.
Ayyyyyy! If you ever go at his house, you gotta do the interview there. It would be the ultimate interview!
Just when i thought your content was dipping you drop this
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT! I don’t have an Instagram so thanks!! Ohhhh man this was amazing I’m still mind blowing... I like his manga so fucking much!
P.S: you better go to his house and do a video about that!
(...or better become his friend and start hang out with him... just saying...)
Bruv id love u to go to his house and do a second interview. He’s such a Goat
Praise to Inio, also one of my favorite mangaka.
The man is a genius
