  • Inio Asano's "A Girl on the Shore" manga just got a live-action movie adaptation, and I have a lot to say about it.

You can't help but to give a manga a try, when Joey talks about it. Even if you haven't even heard of it before.

I love A girl on the shore but I wish I was prepared for it "contents" before I read it.

A girl on the shore was the first Inio Asano manga I ever read and I fell in love with his type of writing. It's hard to do a movie adaptation and also as imagine didn't work.

A girl on the shore is my least favorite manga out of all Inio Asano's works and for a long time I couldn't put my finger on why. Now I understand why: it's purely emotionally driven, not plot driven story. I haven't experienced anything like that in my teen years and there isn't enough exposition of the characters for me to reject the disbelief. But at the same time I greatly appreciated Downfall. Even though I haven't experienced midlife crisis yet, I could understand MC's frustration in life because I've been in the similar state of mind before.

I saw girl on the shore read the first few pages, saw the art, checked the author and promptly looked at my schedule for the week and decided. No i will not be depressed for the week.

Inio Asano to me exemplifies the adage that "the more specific the story is, the more universal it becomes." His work is so specific, so singular, and yet the meaning and the emotions are so relatable. We will probably never find ourselves in the exact spot in life that Koume and Isobe were in, but we do understand being confused teenagers, exploring identities and sexualities, confiding closely with someone, being left behind by certain family members. And it's atmospheric and slow and personal and internal and I am not surprised a movie was not able to do it justice. Some stories should remain in the medium they were intended for, for a reason.

Glad to see Joey putting up his more niche interests in this channel. The girl on the shore manga is definitely hard to recommend and read just like Oyasumi Punpun. To me it evokes similar feelings to when listening to japanese 80's city pop music cuz that shit evokes emotion that you can't explain entirely.

The rain scene in the manga legit felt like a movie.

As a writer the Girl on the Shore does make me wish I can portray sexuality as not a means to entertain or pleasure my audience, like many manga writers tend to do, but have it be core to the central themes at play in my work. I've read several novel and visual novels in fact that dive into these themes without making it feel like erotica or porn. The Girl on the Shore is that for me, there are explicit scenes, a lot more explicit than seinen dare to go, but the work definitely doesn't feel like porn. I'm reminded me of my early sexual explorations through the characters and what it means to be connected to someone. How the main protagonist goes back and forth if she really likes the guy she's with or is just with him for sex, and how frustrated the guy is because of this. It's a fascinating read.

Joey, seriously, I almost wish you had put this on the main channel so more people could see it. This was such a good evaluation of a manga, it was just compelling listening too. It pulled me in so hard. I just went and ordered it and I so can't wait to read it.

I feel like the first page explains the themes and the "point" of A Girl on the Shore pretty well.

Dude I'm so happy you're recommending this, I read this manga at least once every few years because of how cathartic the events it portrays are. And despite reading it over and over, the turning in my stomach never stops, it's incredibly powerful.

Joey is often the one we hear the least on Trash Taste but I love it when he speaks up and shares something he likes! whether it is on the podcast or in these "unedited" videos.

I actually purchased AGOTS on Aki's recommendation a few months ago and it's one of my favourite mangas now. It definitely is a manga that I was initially a little shook by with the explicit art portrayals, but when I did finally finish it - those scenes didn't matter overall. The feelings/thoughts I experienced after finishing the manga were those of reminiscing on my own childhood and how I treat those around me now. It really makes you think about yourself as a person and how you can affect others, and how that can shape a person.

Btw the way you make videos on this channel feels a lot more personal. Like it.
