  • This manga will make you feel uncomfortable. Written by Inio Asano the author of Punpun, this story definitely pushed boundaries as far as they can go.

It's absolutely a story that's difficult to digest but, for as uncomfortable as it is, A Girl on the Shore touches upon aspects of human relationships that most anime/manga never would dare to. The thing is, a lot of teenagers do go through these kinds of relationships, as much as we wanna pretend this isn't the case. Not to say too much but I went through some strange relationships in my early/mid teens and seeing a story contextualize some of those experiences I went through, well, it just made sense to me. A story that comments on the nature of those kinds of relationships is a story worthy of being told for those reasons, I think. Especially because it isn't as if A Girl on the Shore is glorifying any of it.

Well, I'd liked the story if it gave reasonable causes which is usually something that bothers us to think of, especially for teens, it isn't like the series is glorifying this but since this is supposed to involve around a younger audience throwing it at them just like that is not a good idea imo.

This story explores sexuality in youth in the most realistic way I've seen in fiction. Because of the inherent taboos around the topic the theme of teenage sexuality is rarely touched upon but when it is we all know that we've been through something like this. Both characters attempt to both express and cover up emotions that are too embarrassing to say up front to the other through the most vulnerable medium of affection, sex. It's a mistake that even adults make but there's something so viceral about it coming from kids, like both their naivette and maturity all come into conflict through the adult act. Perhaps it's just because I have a very calloused heart and libido, or perhaps this is how many of us felt too, but I didn't feel uncomfortable or pleasured by the things I saw in this story. It's an emotional story of two kids not knowing how to love or even know that they're in love and fumble through those emotions while maintaining a friends with benefits relationship, something that I know real people go through.

I don't think he grew as a person that much. As for her, I think the silver lining is clearer: Don't expect to find happiness at the shore if all you do is look out for trash. They both used their time together as a mean to escape what they really needed. Also, I see many people fail to point this out, but he was abusive towards her, but that's empaty for broken people, if you feel worthless and start to experience the others around you as equals, like listening to the same music or having the same struggles, you feel they are as worthless as you. That's why her new boyfriend tells she is what he was looking for, that's why the other guy from school realizes all he need was to talk to reach her instead of waiting, that's why she sees the sea at the end, beyond the beach and the sand.

I can relate to an extent. I've had a relationship with a girl which sometimes confused me and her too. She has this notion that we can stay platonic, cause she's against different religions relationship (I never cared about any of that). I loved her with all I have, sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes I felt like she was distant. There's times that she won't even let me kiss her, and there's times that we can be really intimate. I thought it was really cruel of her to do that. In the end I knew we both have trust issues, but I'm willing to take that chance, alas she hurt me instead. I can understand why she did that, but I feel like we could never go back to the way it was ever again, no matter how hard she tries to recreate that. So I move on, but it feels like evey attempt that I make to grow or find someone else always ends up in a failure or disaster ever since.

Kids can be depressed. Life isn't always sunshine and roses. Being a teen is weird and confusing, and for some it's brutal.

My first love doesn't parallel aiko (thankfully) but there are very similar dynamics that speak forth from my past when reading about aiko and all I can see when looking at aiko is her. Without these experiences beforehand I hadn't had as much of a connection so it might be a lack of parallels to your life that might make it harder to connect to.

Made me realized why I love psychological mangas so much. There are stories where it’s messed up in a bad way and there’s messed up in a good way. The way they show the characters and do unexpected or immoral things will either get hate or love. Some will hate it because they don’t like how the character acts (maybe they read or watch stories that the mc gets better with a happy ending) and some will love it with how realistic and raw it is, we can see how the characters gets affected from their childhood and seeing their relationship build up or break apart because of the trauma that they can’t seem to move on to. I love stories with sad endings too because it’s life, not everything is happy you need to sacrifice your happiness or part of yourself for the benefit of your family or maybe yourself… I read a manga before and it made me cry, I would say oh how I wish he deserved better but that’s the thing in life, the people and the environment changes them, with their feelings suppressed for so long they become crazy and impulsive breaking the image they portrayed to others or how they used to act, people are now throwing them under the bus without truly understanding what the character went through or feeling right now. Making them suffer and just…like I said psychological… There are hidden gems there if you don’t look at the ratings (bias imo)

God I need to read this. Just hearing the summary I simultaneously felt a weight off my shoulders and also a kinda crushing realization.
A lot of my relationships I had in school were with people that had a very negative relationship to sex. Later I found out both of us were kind of seeking the same thing, we both were abused when we were younger and because of that we were doing just like these characters, filling a void. We would do that same bs of doing very sexual things but trying to just remain just friends, because we didn't wanna lose that person to talk to.
To this day kissing is a weird thing for me. I've done every whorish thing you can imagine with men and women but the idea of kissing someone is outright scary to me.
So yeah this one hits really close to home with me.

Am I the only one who deeply enjoys Inio Asanos works? Not in a "the sadness of the characters makes me happy" way, of course. I just remember there stories positively, as very valuable life lessons about staying true to yourself, not letting shyness take away life opportunities, not caring about other's opinions so much and generally enjoying the good things in life before they end. I find it both paradoxically sad and captivating the way Asano never points any conclusion at you. He just tells you a story, one that could be taking place the moment somewhere on earth (maybe in more than one place), and lets the choices of it's characters, which are neither good or bad but simply humans, simply take them to their place. I think he's also an absolute master at describing emotions. At settng a tone to the life periods the characters are passing through. I absolutely love his work.

@Unknown TimeX i feel that, objectively speaking it doesn't realllllly go into anything that in depth and goes througha few generic themes. But that being said no journey has ever personally made me feel as understood as PunPun did, it really helped me figure out a lot of stuff going on with myself.

It was a disturbing read indeed. The manga was adapted in a movie that appeared in theaters in 2021. Pretty good adaptation IMHO: the situations, scenes and dialogs are there but it's obviously less "graphic".
