Those were some of the darkest days in Ghana’s history. What a senseless and ruthless act. I recall countless businesses closing down in my city to escape the mayhems leaving their families behind. Military attacking and arresting civilians in their homes while repeatedly slapping them in their face. I cannot imagine the psychological impact and trauma of the victims families.

According to the stories and history those criminal executions were done in the name of corruption activities. Every story of accusation of corruption till date has not been proven. It is just the behavior of Ghanaians. Always accusing people of some form of wrong doing without any proven fact. We have ended up killing all our good leaders for nothing. It is a sad behavior. And today we have same remnants and follower of Rawling doing the same things. God save Ghana.

History that most of the youth aren't aware. The sacrifices that both fallen military personnel and civilians made not by their will. No one should die through execution because of corruption. I nearly got shot as a civilian through no fault of mine. God's Grace was on me, and he spared my life. Young ones, please humble yourselves and feel privileged that you are sitting on shoulders that saddly died during the revolution. You see how every November across Europe and America, those who fell during the world wars are remembered. Let us remember those who fell during the revolution and keep the snide comments out.

Some of these men had retired and living peaceful civilian lives but blood thirsty power drunk Efo wouldn’t rest until they were all dead. He blamed the killings on the people of Ghana saying “they were crying for blood” when in fact, he ordered the arrests and had the power to pardon them after their trial as the military ruler. This is in addition to the 3 judges he murdered for no reason other than doing their job. Today his family live in luxury with stolen money hidden away in Swiss banks while still influencing Ghana’s political life. This history is necessary for those born yesterday who still glorify his tenure because they are too young to realise the terror and havoc he scattered across Ghana. He died without pain but his maker is surely waiting for him.

The name Rawlings for me means greatness. Plain and simple. These are the kinds of people (leaders) obstructing and undermining Africa to the point we keep crying "our leaders our leaders ". Rawlings showed incredible bravery and purpose to stage a coup. Followed it up with vision and a work ethic to navigate Ghana towards the state it is today. He's kind of unique in Africa, a case study for a military man. By the way, those generals were not executed by Rawlings. Sorry to inform you but it was a popular uprising and the people demanded their heads. Even Afrifa predicted this in a letter to Acheampong.

The people wanted a change, Rawlings led a coup to bring that change. He's duly credited. The people call for the heads of some "corrupt" officials. Rawlings once again leads that execution.
Conclusion: Rawlings didn't kill them, it was the people. However Rawlings made the coup, not the people, even though the people called for the change.

How is it that a figure who thrived on just simply murdering his political rivals celebrated? Just barbaric strongman tactics to sieze power with a very weak political ideology behind it seems to be the norm in west africa. As a South African I always think that since these countries got their independence decades before we did in 94 they should have been the model to follow for us but it is the other way around and they are too proud to recognize that their suffering is self inflicted. We've had 5 presidents since 94, none of them had to stage a coupe and rule through fear by eliminating all opponents. No civil war since independence and one of the strongest economies in the continent. Simple, we debate and vote!

The Rawlings execution of the generals including three former military heads of state is difficult to justify solely on the grounds of corruption if those generals themselves had not, in addition to corruption, caused the death of people. However, Rawlings brought political and economic sanity back to Ghana after his draconian rule. It could be that a country like Nigeria also needs Rawlings-style draconian rule to restore sanity.

I'd very much appreciate it if you can do a documentary on your Nigerian leaders whose stories you should have first-hand knowledge of.

His worst corruption was transformed himself from military to civilian president of additional 2 terms of ruling Ghana after years of rulling as military head of state.
The killing of his senior generals was more of vadental or revenge.
What later happen to himself, he finally died and Ghana is moving on.
