    Okay, sir, I do respect your views about J. J. Rawlings that he was the most corrupt President of Ghana, according to you. The fact remains that although he may not have been perfect as a human, he definitely made Ghana better than he met it. The Continent of Africa can attest to this, & we do appreciate his little contribution to the people of Africa!!!

    Jerry Rawlings was a brutal military dictator who made two military coups and murdered his countrymen including , heads of state and judges and brought a lot of pain and suffering to Ghanaians. He seized sveral individual companies whose owners he imprisoned arbitrarily or forced them into exile. Unstable , he was first, a maxist and made Ghanaians very poor, wretched and famished , but later adopted the liberal economy, having been isolated by the West as a marxist. He finally metamorphosed into a democrat with a constitution, thereafter Ghanaians began to enjoy human rights and some marginal improvement in the economy. After 19 long years in power , Rawlings could not transform Ghana as he had thought. He is however credited for relinquishing power 8 years after becoming a democrat by force , but left Ghana still a poor, untransformed , underdeveloped , corrupt and very indebted nation today. The question one may ask is : Like many military regimes in Africa, which significant improvement did Rawlings' military coups and regimes bring to Ghanaians after about 20 years in power ? Was it not a waste of Ghana' s time , making Ghanaians guinea pigs for experiment ?

      Tell me what improvement other govt after him has done? He came to power in Ghana were there was no bread to eat.. He gave Ghana free and fair election, we don't have that in our country. Ghana has opportunities to choose leaders that can transform Ghana. That's enough achievements for me, if that is the only thing he achieved.

    Actually what saved JJ Rawlings from being executed was a leaked letter that General Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to General Fred William Akufo asking why he (Akufo) was holding a useless trial for the coup plotters. Obasanjo suggested that they be executed immediately so as to not give the wrong ideas to young Nigerian army officers who were watching events in Ghana. Upon hearing this a group of Ghanaian military officers led by Major Boakye Gyan stormed the prison and released Rawlings. The rest was history.

    Despite all these killings by Rawlings, has corruption stopped in Ghana? And if it hasn’t stopped, is Ghana expecting for another Rawlings to carry out more executions?

    • @benjaminwilliams6750
      @benjaminwilliams6750 2 месяца назад

      The execution was not only to stop corruption alone, Rawlings selfless agenda brought a different dimension into the entire Ghana as a country and its citizens as Ghanaians, there are many horrible things going on in Nigeria which an average Ghanaian wouldn't ever want to get involved with, such as internet fraud and scam, terrorism, kidnapping, boko haram in Nigeria. Rawlings instilled that self discipline and dignity into all Ghanaians, during Rawlings reign robbery, corruption, bad leadership and politician embezzling public fund reduced drastically so in a larger aspect his ideology really affected Ghanaians till date, he forced Ghanaians to live uprightly.

    He stabilized the polity in that after his tanure democracy was sustained from one democratically elected president to another. But his regime was not with its flaws. Rich men who worked for their money were victimized and even their vehicles seized, even innocent market women, and came with an egalitarian blur that everyone should have one toilets in their houses, some socialist unrealizable thing to do. It was like he hates the rich then even the innocent ones while he became rich himself through the privilages in office. The penalty for corruption is not execution in Ghana but imprisonment. Generals were executed for overthrowing Nkrumah, but he too staged a coup but enacted a law to protect himself. Not just the generals but there was reported killings during his regime. He did well, but has his dark spots too.

    What is South Africa's Jacob Zuma's speaking on a podium, where you should have placed John Mills Attah (11:45 - 11:53), doing there?
    J.J. Rawlings didn't purposely change his last name to Rawlings, it was done by some entrance examination result that inadvertently addressed him so and he didn't bother correcting it. If I were him, I would not have borne the name of the man who fathered him because the man rejected him at birth and never acknowledged him. Not even when he was an adult, and visited Scotland, did the man relate to him as his son. Jerry met him in his Scotland country home but the man pretended being someone else and told Jerry that John was dead. Jerry knew the man was lying and left -- and never tried to reach out to him thenceforth.
