Met her when I was like 12. I lived way out in the middle of nowhere in Cazadero, CA and we didn’t have cable, as it wasn’t available for miles. My older college-age sisters were nice enough to record SNL and other shows for me, and I would watch the tapes on repeat. She was in a number of sketches around that time, which was when Amy Fisher/Joey Butafuco was a big story. I remember hanging out with my buddy one day and we road our bikes to one of his family friend’s house and she was there. I didn’t have the nerve to tell her I knew who she was and had watched/rewatched her sketches a lot, but she did talk a bit about being on the show, and how Mike Myers and Carvey were the cool kids.
Felt super random at the time because I was literally watching that era SNL a lot while at home and then go out to play with my friend, and she was at this dudes house out in the middle of nowhere near this tiny town.
OHMYGAWD. That’s so awesome!

.
Yeah, cool story........and I have a feeling if that had been me, I would have probably pestered her with questions about the show, and the cast at that time, until she either ran away, or told me to stop bugging her !! 😄
.
I've never been near her
My favorite is her as Tori Spelling!!❤😂😅
Her Tori is HILARIOUS. That disgusted/spoiled/bad attitude look on her face. One time she made an appearance as Tori and didn't say a word-she just gave that face and got a laugh. a big one from me. Somehow it feels to me like she's coming across as resentful about being odd-looking. Like she hates that she's being played by Melanie Hutsell. Like Melanie Hutsell is making fun of herself too all at the same time. Hard to explain it just strikes me so human and very funny. I have to say though Jan is my favorite favorite. :)
I loved the bit from Letterman or Leno where they showed Tori Spelling's resume.
("Daddy!!!")
Melanie used to have the Partridge Family/Brady Bunch battle of the bands skit on her webpage … that was the last time I saw it years ago. That skit is my all time favorite. I love her Jan Brady impression which you can find clips of her doing on Weekend Update. I’m so glad they did this podcast and I hope more recognition comes her way. She is immensely talented.
My sister is a friend of Melanie's from when they both worked at the same summer camp. I believe they are still keeping tabs on each other, but it is awesome to hear her on this podcast.
So great to hear from Melanie!
Melanie was great on SNL. I'll never forget, she had maybe the funniest scene EVER on the show; the '92 town hall sketch with Dana, Phil and Jan, where their letting audience members ask questions to candidate Clinton. And Melanie gets up there and kills this impression of the 'dumb u.s. voter ' with, "I look all 'round and I see all this stuff! And everyone's got stuff but me man, it's, like, where's my stuff, man!" FUCKIN HILARIOUS! Almost made Phil lose it at one point
Sounded kinda gay
I remember that like it was yesterday.
I'm searching for that right now!! Oh its funny!
One of the best shows. Great conversations
Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!
This reminded me how funny she was in SNL. What a wonderful person!
Melanie is so charming and genuine, and as a long-time fan, it feels good to know that.
She was awesome. I loved her facial expressions, especially when she would do that exasperated/disgusted look.
Great episode! Didn't realize she was in so many great skits! Haven't been able to find the Brady's vs Partridge Family skit. Thanks for the visit!
ask Andy or Jane lol
My mom flew up with Melanie’s mom from Knoxville in 93’. Jeff Goldblum was host and Aerosmith was musical guest. Melanie….thank you for getting the the autograph cast hat. I still treasure it to this day. John Barham
When are you going to have Victoria Jackson on?
Yes, get Victoria Jackson on!
Would love for a dvd release of the years Melanie Hutsell was on SNL. Someone’s please make this happen
I have also fantasized about this.
I need to look up partridge family, Brady bunch sketch. I remember her in the Where's my stuff townhall sketch, with Phil Hartman as Bill Clinton.
the Brady Bunch Vs. The Partridge Family sketch was one of the BEST in the history of the show (as was Focus on Beauty w/ Christina Applegate as Cher). People will argue which period / cast was the BEST. Some people go with the 1975 original cast Chevy Chase , Gilda , etc. Other cite the Eddie Murphy years as the BEST. In hindsight and my opinion - the best 10 years was 1987 thru 1997 (Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers era thru the Cheri Oteri , Will Ferrell era) .
I was having a panic attack when David was describing how a sketch is produced. I don't think I ever realized the writer ends up being the director/producer for their sketch.
it's like getting thrown in the deep end of the pool (with a celebrity)
I love every episode I wish they were all 2 hours long💜
Love her laugh. Makes me smile
So I’m 24 now. When I was a young boy, “Joe Dirt” and “Master of Disguise”, I kid you not lived in my VHS 😂 obviously so much more great content from you guys but that was the start haha. This podcast is a real treat, for real! :)
Also gotta get video going.. those views will pop ;)
The most impressive part of that story is that you’re 24 and you know what VHS is. 🤣
That was a tought period to break into the SNL boys club because there were so many of them that were so good. Carvey, Myers, Hartman, Sandler, Farley, Spade, Rock, Meadows -- all of them (except Phil, of course) are still stars today.
I want to have a beer with David Spade. He seems really down to earth.
Exactly why we need this show, amazing interview.
I loved that Kristin Wiig and Maya Rudolph put Melanie in #bridesmaids 🎾 IYKYK 😎
That’s where I saw her! And thought the same when I saw her. Rudolph literally rules
I've seen better tennis in a tampon commercial.
Melanie Hutsell rocked "Jan Brady". I remember the sketch and saw it again recently on TicTok. It was cool to hear Melanie, David, and Dana reminisce about performing the sketch.
I loved the At Home with Monica (Seles) sketch, where every little thing she did she did with the exaggerated tennis grunt.
Melanie Hutsell! What I loved the best about her was her facial expressions. And her hair. Shimmering blond hair that surely had to make David S. And Dana C. jealous. They should been in a band- "The Three Blond Amigos." Yeah, Melanie and Dennis Miller had the best hair in SNL history. Melanie Hutsell could kill with just her expressions, especially her vacuous stoner look. And her voice. ...Jan Hooks, Cheri Oteri, and Melanie Hutsell
Melanie's best bit was the silly and pointless sketch for a sorority house, in which every time she answered the phone she would say, "Delta Delta Delta! Can I Help Ya ? Help Ya ? Help Ya ? " 😀
Me and my workmate were the unofficial Melanie Hutsell fan club. We did her lines to each other over and over all day. She is SO funny. I wish you guys would STFU for a minute.
lol word
Preach.
It's flattering to have anyone on SNL imitate you!
It's a shame that so many female cast members are barely seen again.😢
I think all the ones that should be seen again, are.
Who's bigger than Tina Fey?
Enjoy you guys and this podcast so Much!!
Thank You n keep em coming please!! ❤🎉😊xoxo
45:33 Please invite Tim Kazurinsky on the podcast!
The scene in Police Academy where he’s going down the range is the best. 🤣🤣
Do you two record your podcast on camera? I would love to watch as well as listen.
Love show keep it flowing. Great chemistry with yous guys
In the Natalie Cole sketch, Farley did Mama Cass! 😂😂😂
The fact she didn't get more recognition from her SNL days is criminal,
Love your podcast. It's better than most current SNLs. They are so hit and miss. Mostly misses nowadays. You two are always hits . Hardly matters who you interview. Don't stop anytime soon please. 54 y/o btw.
those recent "writers room" skits r unbearably unfunny and looong...
don't watch SNL but even so Melanie made an impression in clips & the water cooler talk
100% committed, must have hosted 5 or 6 times by now?
I’m sorry but Blossom definitely deserved to be made fun.
agreed
Couldn't find Partridge Family sketch on youtube, and in classic Peacock fashion, the sketch is left off the Susan Dey SNL. Why don't we get full episodes on Peacock? Why do they leave off the most iconic sketches like Get a Life or Chippendale's? Is it because of the songs used in sketch, and is this same reason musical guests aren't on Peacock either???
Probably the music rights.
yes and yes
Wow, this woman has barely aged from the looks of the lovely photo of her.
she was really good, very underrated in a historically overrated period of snl. her skits delivered
The tab said “videos”. Where’s the damn videos? These are audios.
I LOVE Melanie's version of Tori Spelling!
I wanted hear Paula Deen. Stick of butter popsicle y'all!
Marcia Marcia Marcia!
Where is the Video!
Where are the video podcasts? Did they just bring a camera in for that one Covid bit to get some press or what? In the beginning of the Baldwin ep, Spade is even joking about his appearance - surely this isn't an audio-only pod
51:10
Farley played Mama Kass.
This is why I stopped listening. Nobody likes a one upper. I’m not speaking to you Spade.
i used to dook in the girls bathroom on the empty floor upstairs in my old office building. it was cleaner! (this is relating to a story melanie told, not a random reporting of my previous bathroom habits)
I don't understand the apologies for impersonations? That's comedy. At least it used to be?
not funny
Hey there, is there a video version of this podcast, you know, where we can actually see the hosts and guests? Even if it's paid, let us know please.
