Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song

There's no negative to rush being available. Aileen, I've played bass for 40 years. When you practice and feel ANY frustration, stop trying and put the bass down. The longer you remain frustrated, the longer it will be for you to make it work. I absolutely love female musicians, and if you want inspiration, Mohina Dey on bass, Esmeralda Spalding on electric AND acoustic bass AND vocals

As you listen to Rush, you have to remember this is a trio where each member is one of the best with their instrument. Rush are known for their tempo changes. Seeing one of their live videos shows just how versatile they were. Geddy switches from bass to keyboards and sometimes plays synth with his feet while performing the craziest bass riffs. Check out YYZ in Rio or Working Man in Cleveland.

Technically, most changes they made were time signature changes, not tempo changes. As a drummer, this is an important distinction for me.
Tempo (sometimes also called the meter) is usually expressed on this song usuing the term "Allegro" and annotated by a quarter note equal to 135 beats per minute. That is what one would normally set a metronome (click track) to.
In this song, they go to a "half-time feel" quite a few times. To the pure listener it sounds like they are going half as fast in that break, but in reality the tempo is the same. On drums, this can be done merely by playing the snare on beat four only instead of on two and four. In the case of that reggae feel that Aileen noted, the sole snare hit happens on beat 3.
Time signature is how those beats are divided up, shown in what looks like a fraction. The top number is number of beats in a measure, and the bottom is the subdivision. Most rock is in "common time" or 4/4, which means four quarter notes each measure. Rush (and other progressive groups) will throw in a measure of 3/4 or 5/4 here and there , or even do whole verses alternating 3/4 and 4/4 (which some folks just count as 7.)

Rush's YYZ is one of my favorites, and is done really well live in Rio. You can see Geddy Lee's stacks of washing machines that he got as a joke aimed at the guitarist Alex Lifeson's amps. Occasionally you'll see a guy in a chicken suit come out and mess with the machines while they're playing. Rush is easily one of my favorite bands because of their unique sound and their pure talent and skill in musicianship. Great band, and I'm glad to see you finally check them out!

    • @AndrewD3382

He also used the props as a way to balance out the stage. Geddy played direct line into the sound board, he had no amps onstage. In order to balance the stage setup opposite Alex's stacks, they contrived the washing and rotisserie machines to keep it all even.

My daughter and I did this song back on January 25, 2021. Rush was one of my dad's favorite bands. He would listen to them all the time, so, naturally, I also became a Rush fan growing up. After he saw our reaction to it, and me passing that on to my daughter, he called me and told me he loved the reaction and we had a long amazing talk. Not even a month later, he was in the hospital with Covid. He was put on a ventilator never to wake up. I consider our reaction the last real moment we had together, even though we were 320 miles apart at the time.
In the end, I can't not click on a good Rush reaction. They always hit me right in the feels.

When you said playing a very short lick over and over perfectly can be incredibly difficult. I've been playing since 1985. A long time, and that hasn't and probably never will get easy. Bend a string a little too much or not enough and you can hear it. You were dead on on that one.
THE greatest rock drummer . Every great drummer will say that. Great choice. This music is what I learned to play on. I was 15 in 1985 when I started playing. No cell phones, no internet, and no everything that we have now. It's sooo great to see you young ones who get into this music. It was what defined me because of my guitar. It was all I did. I hear things in songs that non players don't, and it's vocally or the other instruments. When you learn a new song or riff on the guitar, you should put HUGE effort to learn it by ear. Just sit and figure it out. Replay it over and over. That's how you develop the ear. The parts you can't get, go to UTube and watch GUITAR LESSONS 365. He's amazing and has a lesson for every song in existence. Learn to tune your guitar by harmonics. Tune the low E and then manually tune the others without a tuner. Teach your ear.

The best percussionist and songwriter to ever live (R.I.P. Professor) and was such a great human being. I can listen to Neil's interviews all day. I saw Rush 3 times (Subdivisions, Power Windows & Clockwork Angels) and they were always incredible. Any chance you get to watch them live it is a treat still today. You could make a solid argument that they're the greatest band of all-time. Any song on Moving Pictures is worth a listen as I believe is their masterpiece, but I'm a 40+ year fan and I love all of their stuff except maybe Caress of Steel.

It most certainly IS a masterpiece. RUSH is probably the best trio ever. It's fun to watch younger people like yourself discover them. Please continue! (Hint, listen to 2112 all the way through is the best advice ever given to someone looking for a new thing.) :)

I've never seen your channel before but I'm checking this out and one thing that sticks out to me already is you called out the base part which I hardly ever hear any first react people do unless they are musicians which is few and far between with react channels. I'm already hoping you've covered some earlier rush, I was just in 9th grade when a friend introduced me to 2112 in hemispheres and I was a musician even then and it blew me away. But anyway I will continue on, laugh. I also love the fact that if you stop it you rewind it a little bit to regain the flow. That is a great technique.

I heard this on the radio like most in 1980. It's the 1st song I remember hearing by Rush. The lyrics, each instrument parts, time changes, it put them on the pop music map and more greater things came soon thereafter.

ok a little back story and about the meaning of the song, Neil is from my home town, that said Neil wrote this song after listening to the radio on the way home from practice the idea came to him as he was coming across the Burlington Skyway bridge in Hamilton, he was listening to CFNY 102.1 Toronto station and was not impressed with the station selling out to corporations which is briefly mentioned in the song but he took it a bit further by mentioning how bands are also becoming commercial sell outs, so it's a tribute and a dig all at the same time, but one thing I must add as a huge Rush fan myself it always amazed me how 3 guys can sound more full musically then a much larger band

It's so great to see how much you appreciate their music! Hopefully you can start to go down the Rush Rabbit Hole! As you go forward, please watch Spirit Live! This song reallys shows off their musicality and really must be seen Live. The video is cute but you aren't able to see them master their instruments. I love how you appreciate the bass so much. You will really love how Geddy Lee is a master at his craft (they all are) when he tears up the bass and then goes over to the keys and burns them up! So amazing but must be seen LIVE! Thank you for your reaction! New fan! 🙏Miss you so Neil Peart (P👂t)

this is awesome.... and this just yesterday from a fb page I follow...
July 16, 1921 - Brother George Rueppel, S.J., brought a gramophone into the St Louis University campus studio of WEW. He put on a record and held the station's microphone up to the horn of the gramophone, becoming the first radio disc jockey in St. Louis.

Great reaction and welcome to Rush…One quick note (and not sure if it was mentioned earlier), Neil’s last name is pronounced like the word “peer” with a “t” added on at the end.
PS: Tom Sawyer should be your next vid - it’s a video they shot during the recording of that song in the studio.

There's a lot of little hints to other tracks of theirs in this video. I'll give you one of the easiest to see: The Red Car near the beginning, is a reference to their track "Red Barchetta". They were really saying Hey Radio Dj's play more of our other tracks, not just the commercial stuff!!

I didn't know who you were and probably got this suggested due to Rush content, but the second I saw you make a happy stink face while air guitaring the bass line, I said "hah, she's a musician no matter what, only a musician would make that happy stink face while grooving to a Geddy Lee bass line." Cheers.

The first time I seen rush in concert was I think 1978 they was great. But I seen them on there Tom Sawyer tour they was mind blowing they improved that much in a year. And for it to only be 3 guys making that sound. Not many bands can do it with just 3.. ZZ TOP, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, RUSH, off the top of my head. Hell my band 6 guys at one point in the 80s and we sounded like sack of scalded cats screaming compared to rush.. LOl🤣 Another great reaction our hard Rock goddess 😇✌✌🤘
