I think "Us" Is terrifying with and without the explanations.
More terrifying with explanation. We are our worse enemy. Look at how some of us got to have the lastest iphone. I think that is lost pursuit because some of us don't even have a place to stay or nothing to eat. A great situation for our replacements to kill what is left of our humanity.
Jason was also the only one to use “puppet power” on the tethered Jason causing him to walk backwards into the fire. None of the other family members did this with their tethered

The Jason theory is flawed because if he did get swapped how does one year in the tethered world make him become animalistic..and on the flip side how does one year in the SURFACE world teach the tethered version speech. Lupita had to go to years of therapy to learn speech.

Honestly that's the least of the plotholes in the film; start asking questions and the entire thing falls apart. I think the film works best if you try to think of it as like an old fairytale or parable where the message is more important than the story actually making sense. eg. Little Red Riding Hood; it shouldn't make sense that a wolf is able to secretly replace the grandma without anybody really noticing; but it is important to the message as the story was originally intended as a metaphor warning young girls to avoid rapists and pre-marital sex; both of which are represented by the wolf.
The biggest question is why the tethered came out only now? They could have left the underground during all those decades since the door was open...

one problem with the audience is that we focus too much on the Adelaide switch + Wilson family and not the fact that every real human in Santa Cruz , and beyond, was killed by their clone.

@@TruYu maybe it's how young the boy is. The older a person gets the more experiences they have which would lead to more opportunities for your tether to resent you.
Jason is young and aside from burned face they seem very similar. If anything it shows how we are more of a product of nurture versus nature. Our surroundings and experiences/friends and direct family mold is into who we are.
I for one believe in personal accountability and that choices define who we are ultimately and that even someone born into a bad situation can get themselves out with the know how and dedication. Although learning proper values can be difficult with parents who think they are victims and claim the same for you. Anyway this comment isn't about that though.
I might know why Jason wears the mask. I think he is compelled to wear the mask because his connection with the tether is so strong he feels the need to cover his burned face, even though it is not his face that is burned. Yo ken let me know if you think that's right I'm just spit-balling here. :D
John Gleue that is why the children were easy on killing! Half soul on them. It shows at the friend’s house they kill easily the tethers while the father doesn’t.
Both children are definitely in touch with their tethered side. When the daughter kills that first twin tether, it is a bit of a mirror to how adelaide kills the other twin tether.

They weren’t snapping off beat, they were snapping on the upbeat. Which is even more symbolic that he could’ve been a tether because conventionally, people clap on the downbeat. They snap on the second half of the note hinting they are the other side/part of the same person/note.

I think the real explanation for why Jason is "different" is he is more strongly "tethered" to his doppelganger than the others, so the thoughts and feelings of his doppelganger bleed into his mind and psyche affecting his behavior and personality.
Yeah, I think that's also why Pluto was different from the rest of the family. He wasn't interested in stabbing, he wanted to burn them, which explains why he didn't have scissors.

Try hereditary, it’s another horror film with a satisfying deep lore. Hereditary and Us are my two favorite horror films right now. I would also recommend the witch, but that’s a slower burn than hereditary, and can be off putting if you’re not into pre 1800s themed horror. But I swear I’m tellin u hereditary is some good shit, just remember it’s half family drama/half horror

There's no Tether like behaviour though. The Tether just don't have the same upbringing. Because they lack certain opportunities they didn't have ability to talk and possibly even write however they are exactly like their counterparts. So it would reason that Tether like behaviour due to being birthed shouldn't matter. This is exemplified simply by the fact that Red took Adelaide's place and assimilates into the above world. So even if you were to argue that the children are half Tether, they aren't in the same situation as those below so it wouldn't affect their speech and behaviour.

I agree Pluto and Jason were switched before the movie took place. At the end he is looking at his mother wondering if it was safe for them with respect to their secret. I took it just to mean that Jason knew his mom's secret. It doesn't make sense as to why he would be switched.

I, personally, enjoy extrapolating meaning from stories without having every tiny thing explained the first time or two I read or watch it. After I draw my conclusions I enjoy comparing them to others. It’s fun when we agree and very entertaining when we disagree. I love a good story 💕
The actors and actresses were really good. It was cool seeing them normal and crazy at the same time.

Jason is not a tether... he is a hybrid... Jason would have had to learn how to talk in order to switch places without suspicion and he would've had to do that instantly. He's just in touch with his mother's true nature.

Pluto is good at fire trick,
Umbrae is good at running,
Then
Adelaide is bad at ballet,
Jason is bad at fire trick,
Zora is bad at running,
You can see both underground and surface kids inherited their respective mom's bad or good talent. We can see that Adelaide and Jason are both bad at their talent so Jason was not switch. And also, Pluto's face burned coz while Jason was always failing to light the lighter, Pluto was always successful burning his face in the process since tethered people just copy the surface people's movement.
I think Jason and his mole person are extreme connected. That's why he seems wierd, and also why he was able to get him to back into the fire.
Jason and his tether were both half human and half tether. Thats probably why they were so odd.
