  • Today, we'll take apart a new knife from Gerber which is actually quite brilliantly designed, the Fastball.

What happened to your Loctite stick? I got a stick based on how easy it looked in your reassembly videos...loving it so far

So I have an 06 auto I was given at an old unit(army). The spring went fubar a few years later. There’s tons of cool springs online. Could you put a coil spring in here easily enough?

It does look like an interesting knife from Gerber. And having locating pins on one side is still more than what most ZT's have, so can't fault them much

Seems inconsistent even in the comments about the thread locker...maybe suggest they use blue vs red in the future when you tour the factory

A version 2.0 with titanium scales, phosphor bronze washers, a thumbstud instead of a flipper and maybe a FFG?
Great effort from Gerber though, they made some serious blades in the past.

What type of driver are you using to loosen those screws?

The fastball doesn’t have any locktite on my body screws, The screws are fitted perfectly on the aluminum. After cleaning mine it’s drop shutting. Super surprising with how easy it was to take apart and maintain.

Not sure if you still check these comments as the video is almost 2 years old but my blade has suddenly developed a slight side to side wooble. Any recommendations on how to fix that if possible?

Damn! Here I was hoping Gerber would come out with something good. It looks cool but, to put it simply, Gerber had QC issues again. I can get a Native 5 LW for that price. And that has a spydiehole.

How did they mess it up

What's wrong with it? I have some objections, but I don't think this is fair.

My grind was atrocious. At the tip, the left side was nearly chisel ground. Blade play at reasonable pivot tightness. I am being pretty hard on it, I suppose. I have come to use Spyderco quality as my benchmark. You’re right though, I’ll soften my comment. I suppose I just feel a bit burned. My takeaway is that you can get better things for the price. *cough cough Native cough cough*

You should post that on the full review, as it reinforces one of the main points I'm making there: All the knife design in the world doesn't count if it's not well made. The first one I purchased was like that too.

Only issue I’ve had with this pos is the pocket clip. One of the ridiculous tiny screws came loose and now no matter what I do it won’t stay tight.

mentioned in the review video, adding here, this is NOT Gerber's "first American-made un-assisted flipper", they released the Decree a few years back and there have probably been others (someone can check). They have plenty of china-made flippers, no reason that they couldn't learn from those to get good results in a US factory. How slippery is the knife relative to the Kershaw Leek?

Nick excellent video I took my fastball apart to clean and my blade isn’t in the center any more! You don’t mention which direction the bearings go back in. And seems to bind a little! Maybe I’m to old to understand!

No Chicago screws? Seems like a cop out. Like they went into production and forgot. Seeing the locktight from the other side just seems cheap.

They do have some atrocious QC!! My one arrived with a damn chip in the spine of the blade 🤦🏼‍♂️, the fact that you have to play roulette when purchasing this knife in hoping that it’s all perfect sucks man !!! My second one is good tho so yeah lmao

Seems like quality control is the main down fall of gerber! Cool designs but then they just give up
