I received this machine from a friend, and I am having so much trouble setting the tension correctly. Can or would you Please give me some advice? thanks so much and today is January 6, 2022
When setting the tension, it is always important to do the bobbin case tension first. Your upper tension should be backed right off and then when testing, do a good half/full turn of the knob when adjusting. Sew about 20 stitches, check front and back. Initially you should see bobbin thread to the top and as you increase the top tension, this will move to the back of the fabric. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
The Juki TL-18QVP is not available in Australia, but the Brother PQ1500SL is a great straight stitching machine, easy to use with extra feet. Both are quite comparable in capability and speed. If you have any further questions, please let us know.
@@EchidnaClub thank you 😊 I love watching your videos, they are very well made and your presentation is really detail oriented. I am in Canada and looking to buy one of these two machines. It's really difficult to decide...
That is my question exactly. I am pretty sure that is the largest store I have locally has multiple Machines so I will have to sit down and try them all
When you next get it serviced you can get the technician to have a look at it for you. Sometimes it is the springyness of the thread which causes it to come unthreaded, and sometimes the high tension on the thread as well.
What size needle do I use for FMQ and what type of thread? Polyester or 100% Cotton quilting thread. The polyester thread I used shreds in the machine. Thank you!
We recommend a quilting needle, a size 14. As a general rule it is best to use the same thread top and bottom. This makes setting the tension easier. We use the Rasant thread to quilt with and it is a good quality, economic thread.
@lynnhufstetler3825, It is able to sew on soft leather to a certain thickness. Here is the link to the machine on our website where you can find more information: www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-straight-stitch-sewing-machine-model-pq1500
Gary, could you address a problem for me? I'm trying out a Brother Nouvelle 1500S for FMQ on my frame. My thread is shredding, so I will change the needle and see; What stitch length do you set it at for FMQ, normal thread tension for quilting on a frame that has a quilt made up of quilting cottons/batting/backing. The foot tension to match feed dogs down, done. When should you adjust bobbin tension - if at all?
Hi Denise, it is important to always check your bobbin tension first and set your bobbin, you would then adjust your top tension. Increase your top tension until you can see your bobbin thread coming through to the top. Then with half turns of the tension disc, back off your tension until it sits evenly. Test your tension by doing zig zags and circles or loops. The stitch length is controlled by you so you will need to increase or slow down the stitch speed according to how fast you are moving your quilt. Hope this helps :)
@@EchidnaClub thank you do much. Ill be working on this tomorrow snd try your suggestions. I am really hoping to get this working as i think my friend would sell it to me. Also does the tightness (bounce) in the quilt top on the frame affect the stitches -breakage/skipped stitches; e.g. too tight versus too loose- I’m thinking i might have rolled it just a tad too tight…. Your opinion please. Do appreciate your input.
I am looking for a machine that can handle a Flynn quilting frame. How does it do with a frame on it. I need something that will sit pretty still. I have a smaller brothers machine. It seems to want to move on me.

@brendacapriotti1959 No this machine only does a straight stitch, blind hem requires the machine to be able to do zig zag. It is great for straight stitching on curtains, bag making and piecing, to name a few.

I am from Australia and hope to buy from ur site in a few weeks as well as the presser foot that would be ideal for I am doing
Hi Tina, there is a Narrow foot you can purchase as an extra. Here is a link: www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-narrow-foot-for-pq1500sl-115c04e7005 The standard sewing foot is narrower than a standard domestic sewing machine as well.

@@EchidnaClub : Thank you for your reply. If you had to recommend a machine for basic sewing that included a zig zag for lace applique work on fine fabrics and a great straight stitch but not a lot of bells and whistles what would it be?
@@EchidnaClub top stitching on a bag is what I'm hoping to do. Lots of layers and heavy material. I adore this machine for piecing and quilting but I'm anxious about making bags with it. Haven't used such heavy thread on it before and I don't want to damage anything.
Any machine with moving parts has to be oiled, if not you won't get good results. Train your ear to 'listen' to the machine, when the tone changes it needs a drop of oil. Too easy!
Also, wait a second or two before pressing the thread cutter button...this gives the thread a chance to relax before cutting and it doesn't spring back out of the eye.

No. I just got mine yesterday. The foot pedal is quite sensitive, though; this machine feels like an extension of my body rather than as a separate unit. No resistance or sudden racing at all.
My machine sounds horrible, since the day I bought it, not nice and quiet like this, I have oiled and read everything over and over, I am beginning to regret my purchase. @@amaraleigh453 Hmmm....sounds like you're strangling the thread. Match thread,, needle type anf fabric type, then loosen tension a bit and see if your stitching is better. That's all I know.
I wouldn't recommend it for making bags. It hates going fast on straps, if you go fast you have skipped stitches. It hates anything too thick, especially top stitching around the top of bags. I've tried different needles that Echidna has sold me but I'm still not impressed. I've played with the tensions to try and get stitches even but am not satisfied with the stitching.
It's my machine of choice for making bags. Is your thread matched to the needle and fabric? Can't remember the last time I had to change tension on my PQ and sew bags, jeans, shirts, fine knits and I'm picky out tension and thread breakages.

I am in Canada and looking to buy one of these two machines. It's really difficult to decide...
Thank you for your feedback! Good luck choosing... happy stitching :)
That is my question exactly. I am pretty sure that is the largest store I have locally has multiple Machines so I will have to sit down and try them all
My machine thread cutter cuts my thread to short and comes unthreaded. Can you please tell me what I can do to fix it please.
When you next get it serviced you can get the technician to have a look at it for you. Sometimes it is the springyness of the thread which causes it to come unthreaded, and sometimes the high tension on the thread as well.
I have t the same problem
What size needle do I use for FMQ and what type of thread? Polyester or 100% Cotton quilting thread. The polyester thread I used shreds in the machine. Thank you!
We recommend a quilting needle, a size 14. As a general rule it is best to use the same thread top and bottom. This makes setting the tension easier. We use the Rasant thread to quilt with and it is a good quality, economic thread.
@@EchidnaClub Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Are there prewound bobbins for the PQ1500SL available? (:
What is the brand of thread that you are using? That makes the big difference as well
Can you control the speed - is the foot pedal responsive to going slower?
Hi Karyn - you can control the speed of the machine with the foot pedal, it is quite responsive.
The foot pedal is 'extremely' responsive and will sew one stitch at a time if you want. That's just one of the things I love about this machine.
Can this sew on leather? What are the specs?
@lynnhufstetler3825, It is able to sew on soft leather to a certain thickness. Here is the link to the machine on our website where you can find more information:
www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-straight-stitch-sewing-machine-model-pq1500
@@EchidnaClub ps - love your videos😁👍
Yes sometimes the tautness of the quilt can cause issues. You don't want it super firm/tight.
Thank you for your feedback :) great that you find them helpful :)
I am looking for a machine that can handle a Flynn quilting frame. How does it do with a frame on it. I need something that will sit pretty still. I have a smaller brothers machine. It seems to want to move on me.
Hi Angela, the PQ1500SL is a straight stitch machine which is perfect for quilting and doesn't move around as it has a solid base. Here is the link for the machine on our website:
www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-straight-stitch-sewing-machine-model-pq1500
Originally I bought my PQ1500 to put on a quilting frame and it didn't move. Have you tried a piece of non-slip drawer liner underneath?
Thank you! This video was very informative.
You are so welcome!
Does anyone know if this machine can do a blind hem stitch? I am wanting it for curtains also.
@brendacapriotti1959 No this machine only does a straight stitch, blind hem requires the machine to be able to do zig zag. It is great for straight stitching on curtains, bag making and piecing, to name a few.
So are you saying I really don't need to use a blind hem stitch for curtains. Because honestly, I would rather avoid it all together. Lol
@brendacapriotti1959 Yes by all means you can do a nice straight stitch in matching thread or contrasting thread on your curtains :)
Hi looking at getting this machine. I sew did harnesses so I need a narrow foot to get close to the hardware. What foot would I get ? I have looked and they say for light fabrics. I am from Australia and hope to buy from ur site in a few weeks as well as the presser foot that would be ideal for I am doing
Hi Tina, there is a Narrow foot you can purchase as an extra. Here is a link:
www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-narrow-foot-for-pq1500sl-115c04e7005
The standard sewing foot is narrower than a standard domestic sewing machine as well.
@@EchidnaClub thank you. I just note that in the paragraph it states it’s for light weight fabrics. I guess I just don’t want to purchase this machine if it’s not going to do what I am would want it for. Which in my care is heavy weight items and wanting to see close to buckles with overlapping webbing.
It is capable of sewing webbing, where are you located. We do have it on display in our stores for you to try :)
@@EchidnaClub I am on the Sunshine Coast.

can you use a double-needle attachment with this machine?
Hello! This model is not suitable for use with a twin needle, sorry.
@@EchidnaClub thank you so much for the prompt reply.
how do you compare this to the babylock accomplish?
This is a similiar machine and both are great straight stitching machines :)
would this machine be good for fine fabrics like taffeta and chiffon, and finer silks?
This machine has a pin stitch for accurate seaming so yes it is fantastic for fine fabrics.
@@EchidnaClub : Thank you for your reply. If you had to recommend a machine for basic sewing that included a zig zag for lace applique work on fine fabrics and a great straight stitch but not a lot of bells and whistles what would it be?
There is a new model that we love that may fit your criteria - www.echidnasewing.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=NV-50S
You explain very well thank you so much you made me day 😅
Glad I could help!
What's the heaviest thread you can put in the bobbin?
Hello Emly, it does depend on what you are doing? A heavy topstitch thread a jeans thread will be fine though!
@@EchidnaClub top stitching on a bag is what I'm hoping to do. Lots of layers and heavy material. I adore this machine for piecing and quilting but I'm anxious about making bags with it. Haven't used such heavy thread on it before and I don't want to damage anything.
@@emlylemly9748 Hi Emly this machine is designed for heavy duty work. If you were looking at using say a Serafil 30 weight it will be fine!
My top stitch shows under neath the bottom fabric
I have replied to your other message :)
I see this throat plate has metric markings. Here in the US it seems this model has imperial markings :(
Brother machines have slight differences around the world to suit local preferences. We're based in Australia so just about everything here is metric.
Price of machine??
Hi it is on sale at the moment for $1,500.00. (AUD) This is a link for more information. esew.co/pq1500sl
Does this machine have to be oiled?
Hi Tracy, the hook race can have a drop of oil.
Any machine with moving parts has to be oiled, if not you won't get good results. Train your ear to 'listen' to the machine, when the tone changes it needs a drop of oil. Too easy!
why when i use my thread cut the thread come out the needle ?
Hi Nelly, it can be your thread or your tension being too high.
Also, wait a second or two before pressing the thread cutter button...this gives the thread a chance to relax before cutting and it doesn't spring back out of the eye.
Which machine needles I can use
The PQ1500SL takes a normal needle, just need to select the right type of needle for the fabric you are sewing on.
@@EchidnaClub thank you so much for quick reply and your video is very helpful I had this machine for couple of months never had a time , now in winter break I thought I start using it , found your video helpful .
Thanks for your great feedback :) Happy stitching!!
Are they L size bobbins?
Yes the PQ1500SL takes the L size bobbins :)
Would be the perfect machine if they included speed control
We do stock the Juki TL-2010Q Straight Stitch Quilting Machine:
www.echidnasewing.com.au/juki-straight-stitch-quilting-machine
It is a beautiful machine equivalent to the 1500 with the speed control :)
@@EchidnaClub Thanks but my budget is the price of the brother or Juki 2000QI
Then the price would be more plus one more thing to go wrong. I think I’m OK controlling the speed myself that’s what I’m used to. Still on the fence about which one to buy. I’m guessing the speed control will come in handy for free motion quilting
Is there speed control?
No. I just got mine yesterday. The foot pedal is quite sensitive, though; this machine feels like an extension of my body rather than as a separate unit. No resistance or sudden racing at all.
Hi LW there is no speed control with the PQ1500. As Nora says below the control is through the foot pedal and is quite controllable.
I thought this machine only sew straight stitch. There’s no other options like sewing buttons and cross stitching.
Hello! You are correct this machine is only a straight stitcher.
My machine sounds horrible, since the day I bought it, not nice and quiet like this, I have oiled and read everything over and over, I am beginning to regret my purchase. I also read on the Facebook group for this machine another woman who complained of the same thing, why is my machine so horribly noisy? The needle holder also isn’t straight, and I can’t straighten it
Hi Linda, are you able to give us a call on 1800 000 360? We would like to help you if we can :)

What is the price
Hi Betty - here is a link to the machine with full details, itis a wonderful machine. www.echidnasewing.com.au/brother-straight-stitch-sewing-machine-model-pq1500
I only paid $649. on the Brother website.. Different places have them for different prices. Shop around and you will find a good deal.
@@Trish312 I suspect you may be in the USA. I wish we could sell for that price in Australia. Currency exchange rates, taxes and sales volumes account for the differences.
I bought this machine a month ago off Amazon Canada and paid around $850 + tax.
Price will vary due to your location so it's difficult to give you an idea until we know where you live. It's not an expensive machine though.
I have this same machine and I hate it. It’s the machine from hell for me. It does not handle layers well. The tension gaves me headache. I have no idea how to use the walking foot.
Hi Amara, sorry to hear you hate your machine. It is unusal your machine doesn't handle layers well as we have had no problem stitching through 6 layers of denim. What types of fabric are you using?
@@EchidnaClub I use vinyl, cotton and waterproof canvas
@@amaraleigh453 Hmmm....sounds like you're strangling the thread. Match thread,, needle type anf fabric type, then loosen tension a bit and see if your stitching is better. That's all I know.
I wouldn't recommend it for making bags. It hates going fast on straps, if you go fast you have skipped stitches. It hates anything too thick, especially top stitching around the top of bags. I've tried different needles that Echidna has sold me but I'm still not impressed. I've played with the tensions to try and get stitches even but am not satisfied with the stitching.
Hi Deborah, we would like to try and help you resolve these issues. Please give us a call on 1800 000 360.
@@EchidnaClub thanks for that the next time I come down for supplies we’ll see what we can do
It's my machine of choice for making bags. Is your thread matched to the needle and fabric? Can't remember the last time I had to change tension on my PQ and sew bags, jeans, shirts, fine knits and I'm picky out tension and thread breakages.
@@AW-pz3qc I’ve tried a few different size needles, all recommended by echidna, and I use a bonded thread in the bobbin and the top thread and the bonded thread still shreds if I go slowly or even just use the hand wheel.
@@deborahboyle8926 Wow, I've never had problems like that and use all types of thread, needles and fabric combinations.
