Hello, i work all the time on antique and vintage mashines from different brands like Singer, i guess it's my oldest Lady from 1895, Singer from the late 1950ties and european brands which i love. I started to love these mashines because my mother gave my a computerized mashine but something went wrong, it made a big noise signal and did'nt work anymore as i just had finished my skirt. Later i wanted to sew my wedding dress on it but i had to find quickly a solution so i bought a Johann Jax mashine with wooden table and foot pedal from ~1910 for sewing my dress without any problems! As you i now found free motion quilting interesting so i want an elecric mashine agin after this bad experience and i want for this a luxury thread cutter, so i have not to put the blanket out of the mashine for every thread, if it needs to be cutted. Needle up and down, is normal for me but as i told, on my mechanical mashines i can do this lile i need. First i thought a Juki 2010 will be the best solution but it's not available- not in Austria, not in Germany, also i found out the big working table is maybe not that stable like the table of this brother mashine so i have to overthink again. This is a lot of money for me and here in europe most mashines are more expensive than in US. The brother seems to sew faster than the Juki but i can be wrong. Maybe the Brother is also a bit stronger motorized- it seems so to me but i don't know. I wish you a lot of fun with quilting, it's surely a nice hobby!❤
My learning curve with my new Brother pq1500 was a short one thanks to you! I mean it, no where in the owner's manual does it say to push the bobbin in until it clicks. I;m so grateful for this video and your foolproof instructions for using the needle threader. I am not new to sewing and you really helped me so much! Thank you.
Thank you for posting this video! I am brand new to fmq and could not get the bobbin thread to come up for the life of me. I was cutting the bobbin thread with the built in thread cutter instead of leaving a long tail inside the bobbin area. Hallelujah! It worked and saved me a trip to the sewing machine dealer 🎉😅
Thank you so much for this tutorial ! It’s very educational and you explained this machine so well. I ordered this machine a week ago and haven’t taken it out of the box yet! Will be doing that this weekend!
I just bought this machine and was not sure how to use it until I found your channel. Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial as it really helped me out. I hope to more of your tutorials like what to use different needles sizes.
I've never made piping before so I hadn't a clue which foot to use or how to do it. Then I found this tutorial. Thank you so much! My piping came out perfect and I'm looking forward to trying out all the features of my machine!
Awesome video…..this the first video I have found with complete instructions for my Brother PQ1500SL. Now I know what I’ve been doing wrong in trying to use the automatic threader. It reminds of the old all medal machines from the 50’s and 60’s with modern conveniences such as the thread cutter. I really do love my Brother PQ1500SL. Thank you!
holy moly i was stuck on how to thread the bobbin for the longest time. i feel blessed when i found this video. thank you very much!! your extremally instructive in how to use this machine
I have been considering purchasing this machine to complement my Brother 2750D Embroidery machine which I have used for quilting and some embroidery. This machine I believe will answer all my prayers!!! As I am a quilter and focus mostly on straight stiches and I have a desire to learn FMQ. Thank you for providing a clear, concise, entertaining video on this machine. I do not have a LQS near me to "test drive" this machine but I feel having watched your video I will most definitely be purchasing this machine soon as I have a wedding quilt to piece along with several other UFO's calling my name. Thank you!
This is an excellent tutorial! I have the BL Jane & you have shown things I didn't know. I wondered why my thread came out of needle when using the auto thread cutter. Thank you.
Your video is awesome! Thank you so much for helping me get started with my new sewing machine Brother PQ1500SL!!! Your video was exactly what I needed to get started! 👍🏻🤗😊
I’ve had my PQ1500SL over two years now and it’s fair to say we don’t like each other. I’ve considered selling it on numerous occasions. I was flabbergasted to see you sew so easily over those denim layers and then you mentioned you sew lots of layers of vinyl 🤯. I mostly make bags using all types of fabrics. I can’t remember a time when my machine managed the layers like that. I always get slipped stitches and sometimes it just refuses altogether. I have tried various needles types and sizes, different thread types, stitch lengths, and feet. I haven’t yet, found the optimum combination as a start from base. However, I have never tried the hinged foot. Wish me luck. Thank you for this video, I feel like there is hope.
@@mccannge thanks for the concern, unfortunately, I got a full time job and lost my sewjo in the process. I did take it for a check and it did need an adjustment to something inside (?) and it was serviced. The service guy also gave me some tips and told me to persevere because it was an excellent machine. The little I sewed before I started work was much better, but I didn’t really ‘test’ it.
I am amazed at how much this video has helped, I can’t wait to get on my machine with this video and correct all I’ve not done correctly, thank you sewwww much!!
Oh, my!!! Where have you been all this time?! Brother should absolutely pay you for this video and include it on the DVD with the actual machine. You did awesome! I've had the machine for 6 plus years and you just showed me things I didn't know the machine did. Thanks so much!
Amazing presentation. Even do I have my PQ1500sl for several years and I had done several quilting projects I must admid that I did have the quilting settings rigth. I work around the settings and came up with great results. But you are a blesing for us. Your know this baby so well and your demos are so easy to understand. I make my notes and I bet my quilting will be better next time I do any of my projects. I have a little sugestion for you if your free motion foot hoops try to wrap a rubberban around it. Leah Day teaches this tip. I have mine setting with the rubber ban and the hooping is almost gone. GBY and thanks again for these video. I strongly recomed every PQ1500sl owner to watch you. TX
I noticed that you missed a step in the upper threading. Was that on purpose and for a reason? There should be 3 threads behind that bar above the tension. The thread is supposed to go behind that before it goes around the tension. I had been missing that step too for the longest time.
Great review and I learned a few things even though I don’t have this machine. Sadly there are a lot of people on the Internet stating that they have a lot of tension issues. I don’t have that type of personality to deal with that so I’m going to have to bite the bullet and spend more money and get a different machine. Too bad because I really liked all of the features you showed
The tension issues are because of the machine not being threaded properly. I have had mine for about 18 months and the only issues I have are controlling the speed.
Hi- your video is fabulous. I have the Babylock version- Accomplish but none of their videos explained about the presser foot tension. I will try free motion tonight. My main question is how can I use the seam guide with the walking foot. I have tried installing it under or over the walking foot nd the needle doesn't align. I want to use it for quilting on the diagonal???? Please help. Thanks, Nancy😀
When free motion sewing w this machine my stitches are skipping. Ripped out a whole lot for hrs. Help!!! What can problem Be. I’m quilting w cotton thread cotton batting Nan cotton n flannel fabrics. Any suggestions greatly appreciated this is super frustrating 😡😩
Love your tutorial! I had a terrible time though, getting the screw in to the walking foot, I couldn't get the two holes lined up. Part of the learning curve, I guess. :)
Your directions are spot on I have watch several but I learned more from this one than any one of the others I was happy to know how to cutter I missed the needle
I apparently thread mine differently? I tend to use only 2 of the three holes, but I go thru the 'gate' 3 times. from the 3 hole thing - down thru the gate - up thru all the tension wheel stuff - up to the take up lever and then back down thru that 'gate' again. I've been doing that since I bought it 3 years ago. I love my machine - but now I'm confused and concerned I"ve been doing it wrong all along? great video. after all these years I am learning a LOT! thanks.
I purchased a new one to sew through multiple layers of vinyl, etc for bags. I know it’s not ideal since it’s flat bed but it’s so powerful I thought it was worth the extra work. What thread brand and size do you recommend my intended use? Any other advice welcomed. I’m having issues with top stitch being narrow even when it’s on 4 stitch length so I know I have something done incorrectly. Thank you!!!!!
I've had my machine for over a year and until I watched this, I did not realize that my settings for piecing were incorrect. I was about to take it in for service, but first, I will start over using the green (not blue) setttings and see if that helps with the tension problems I've been having. Thanks!
So how is it working now? There are a lot of people who are complaining about the tension issues on this machine. I don’t think I’m going to get this one
@@wendygilbert416 Thanks for getting back to me. I’m glad it’s working out for you. Nothing so frustrating as spending hours trying to troubleshoot your sewing machine when you want to just enjoy sewing
Obviously I can't use my walking foot with the seam guide attachment. I have another Brother and the seam guide attachment fits into the walking foot. I wish Brother would make a walking foot with a seam guide attachment.
I love the video. I just bought this machine for purse and bag making. You mention that you have sewn marine vinyl with it. Do you have video for working with vinyl?
Thanks for the video. I have the pq1500sl and I’ve put about 6 layers of fabric under it to sew a messenger bag shut with the straps attached. Well I broke something because now when I try to sew over a thick fabric it thumps. I’m an armature learnt everything on RUclips and obviously am doing something wrong.
Your video is fantastic! I have learned SO much from you. I just purchased this exciting machine used last week and I am loving it already but still learning it. The speed of the pedal gets me confused. Often the machine is sewing very slow or suddenly bursts into super fast speed. Having trouble controlling the foot pedal. I believe the foot pedal I received is the one that came with the machine but wondering if any brother foot pedal can work since you didn't show that coming with the machine? Also I don't think the pin needle is in this machine which is a Nouvelle 1500s (not sL) and wonder if I have to install a needle? If sewing in the Blue position then the pressure foot cannot be put in the N or neutral position correct? In other words the pressure foot has a very limited blue bandwidth?
Hey Gisele, unfortunately you are the master of your foot control speed. lol If your foot control is working with the machine, it is the right foot control. You could try another to see if that makes a difference but I think you'll just need to learn to control the pressure of your foot to control the speed. The same foot control that works with our PQ1500, works with most of our other Brother/Babylock machines. If you have another foot control, you could try it with your PQ1500. With regards to the pin feature, most likely the pin is there. It only engages when the foot it down. If it's truly missing, you can order this part. =)
I did buy this machine and have only just started with it. I have tried it with silk organza and silk chiffon and it sews them very easily and with perfect tension on the stitches. I just used the needle that came with it, but I am sure I should use a finer needle for these fabrics? could you please recommend a size for fine fabrics ?
Great tutorial I just purchased one waiting for it to arrive, is there a Teflon foot available for sewing vinyl for this machine. I heard you mention a flex foot but wouldn't that stick to vinyl.
at 9:08you mentioned that the rolled hem foot should not be used with the pin feed option. I thought this would be where you would need the pin feed option as you may be more likely to use the rolled hem foot on chiffon or silky fabrics where the pin feed is "essential" to the smooth passage of fabric under the foot. please elt me know your thought on that and if you have used the rolled hem foot on fine fabrics.
There is no notch cut out on the rolled hem foot to allow the use of the pin feed. The feet that work pin feed have a tiny slot at the center back to allow the pin feed.
A fantastic presentation, Michelle! I could not really see how you used the auto threader and have not gotten mine to work. :( boohoo And what is the gray disc for? I did not understand that.
I. Just got my PQ1500SL, my book shows a different threading! Shouldn’t the thread going down to the tensioner also be in the holder then through the tensioner -back through the holder-through the holder (total of 3 threads there),then on down towards the needle!
I am having a hard time with my needle threader. Your hand was in front of the camera so we could not see how the thread was caught by the threader. Could you please do another video showing the threading of the needle. I love this feature and would definitely use, but it does not always catch the thread for me and I get frustrated and end up having to manually thread the needle.
Hi, I have this machine.... Cindy if you’re having trouble getting the self threader to work there are a couple of things to check. ....weight of thread (not lower than 30wt ). I roll the needle position by hand ... I don’t just assume the needle is at its highest spot, then I lower the presser foot then I catch the thread around the hook on the threader then while holding onto the thread I engage the threader ... then use a needle or pin to pull the loop over to the right. Hope this helps.
Thank you for this video , just got this for mothers day .What size needle do you use for vinyl and is it best to use organ needles or can I use other brands ? This was so helpful.
Does this sew leather ? Looking to hem leather motorcycle pants and adjust the cuffs if so what do I need to set it up. Thank you loved the video the best one I saw.
I watched another video I think it was from that company in Australia. I believe it has something to do with the tension. Because if the tension is a little bit too tight then it will pull the thread back out of the needle when using the automatic cutting feature
Very helpful video, thank you. However, I live in a 2nd floor apt. Do you think the vibration of the machine can annoy my neighbor below? Please advise. Thanks.
I have been sewing on a PQ1500S (not the SL) for over 15 years and I love this machine. I would recommend it to anyone. The "pin-feed" helped me out when I was making a renaissance costume cape and I had to sew the (dreaded) satin lining into a velour cape. What I like about the Brother PQ1500S over the Juki TL2010 is the ability to vary the height of the feed dogs and the option of the pin-feed. (But, I am a Brother Snob when it comes to my other machines 😏 even though I am a Juki machine fan.)
Vc poderia me ajudar? Bjs 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
You need to listen for the click. If you put the bobbin case on the shaft, it will stay, but you need to push it into place until you hear the click where it engages the hook. It is the same with any rotary hook and bobbin setup
Great Video, but you didn't explain how to get that teeny tiny pin feed foot into position. When you changed the feed dog mover, it just popped up already inserted. Please show how to do that? The manual is kind of hard to read. Other wise, I learned alot, just having bought this machine, there is much to figure out!
ohh also mine is a Nouvelle 1500s not a PQ1500SL I don't think this is too much different from the one you explained however I don't see the pin need as mentioned in my previous comment

The same foot control that works with our PQ1500, works with most of our other Brother/Babylock machines. If you have another foot control, you could try it with your PQ1500. With regards to the pin feature, most likely the pin is there. It only engages when the foot it down. If it's truly missing, you can order this part. =)
Would you be able to compare this with Juki? If I had to choose one over the other?
I did buy this machine and have only just started with it. I have tried it with silk organza and silk chiffon and it sews them very easily and with perfect tension on the stitches. I just used the needle that came with it, but I am sure I should use a finer needle for these fabrics? could you please recommend a size for fine fabrics ?
We love the microtex needles from Schmetz and the sharps from Klasse.
juki TL 2000qi vs breather pq 1500SL vs juki 18 which is better for using free moton and perfect stitching
Excellent video tutorial. Thank you so much!
Very nice video. Also, how do you install the pin feed?
Great video! Thank you so much!
I have the nouvelle 1500s. The thread cutter always leaves far too less threads. And my seams aren’t so neat. Any advice?
Will I need a “stitch regulator” (quilting) for that machine?
No. You just need practice. 😜
Can I sew handbags with this machine?
How does this machine work with a Flynn quilting frame?
I. Just got my PQ1500SL, my book shows a different threading! Shouldn’t the thread going down to the tensioner also be in the holder then through the tensioner -back through the holder-through the holder (total of 3 threads there),then on down towards the needle!
Hello thanks for this video! Can i ask you if industrial pressure foot are compatible with it ? I'm interested in a compensating pressure foot
A compensation foot is available through Brother
Hi Cindy, there is a second video with just the needle threader with a very good view of that area.
Thank you for this video , just got this for mothers day .What size needle do you use for vinyl and is it best to use organ needles or can I use other brands ? This was so helpful.
I use either a 90 or 100 topstitch needle for sewing vinyl. I use Organ, Schmetz and Klasse brand needles with no issues.
Does this sew leather ? Looking to hem leather motorcycle pants and adjust the cuffs if so what do I need to set it up. Thank you loved the video the best one I saw.
It can sew Leather with the appropriate needle.
Thank you!!!!this really helped.
Thank you. How can I keep my needle from unthreading after using the scissors function?
I have the same issue... it un threads the needle every time I use it.
I watched another video I think it was from that company in Australia. I believe it has something to do with the tension. Because if the tension is a little bit too tight then it will pull the thread back out of the needle when using the automatic cutting feature
I cut the thread with the needle down. I have no problem with unthreading when I do this
Very helpful video, thank you. However, I live in a 2nd floor apt. Do you think the vibration of the machine can annoy my neighbor below? Please advise. Thanks.
There isn’t much vibration on this machine
Can I use a double-needle attachment on this machine for sewing knitwear?
You can not. It's a single hole needle plate and the flat side of the needle goes to the right.
Can we use all universal needles on this machine , thank you in advance
Thats what I was wondering. And can I use my coats and Clark thread?
@@lindatonkin3802I use coats and Clark serger spools without any problems. I also have used the regular sewing thread without any problems.
Got one to make bags need to no thared to use for bag making thanks
Superb maam....where ill get this machine and what's the price??
You can get it from our store. Call us at 775-852-2323.🙂
Do they make a gathering or shirring foot for this machine? Thanks
Do you make bags I would like to get big cones of thared do not no the 7o tex
What is your stitch on?
I want to figure out how the seam guide fits and this is the only one you didn’t show.
Good day mam, where could I buy a presser foot for this machine?
Vc poderia me ajudar? Bjs 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you for your help 🙏🙏🙏
This was an awesome video!! Thank you so much!!!
Hi,
Cam you please help.
My pq1500sl bobbin is not staying in and I do not clicking when I put it in. Any suggestions? Thank you
You need to listen for the click. If you put the bobbin case on the shaft, it will stay, but you need to push it into place until you hear the click where it engages the hook. It is the same with any rotary hook and bobbin setup
Thank you so much!
Thank YOU
ohh also mine is a Nouvelle 1500s not a PQ1500SL I don't think this is too much different from the one you explained however I don't see the pin need as mentioned in my previous comment
Pin needle only pops up when the foot is down so it's hard to see.
So does this machine have a computer chip?
Does this machine sew leather... thank you
Hey Margie. So this is not an industrial machine. That being said, you could do light leather. 🙂
The only thing the PQ series lacks is the speed control so it doesn’t get away from the beginner
Thank you sooo much. I owe a nouvelle 1500s
I’ve had no problems with quilts though
Thankyou
Do you sell aftermarket specialty feet for this machine?
