    The basic tech of the MG4 seems solid and the car drives great once you get the settings right. I think you get a lot of value for your money with this car. Thank you for sharing your experiences and for showing the android auto screen which I have not seen in other reviews of the car.

    The key reason why the range drops so much during winter months is the LFP battery used in the lower trim level MG4 (I believe your car is the lowest trim level). While LFP is cheaper and considered safer than NMC battery, its performance during cold weather is significantly worse than NMC battery. MG4's higher trim level uses NMC battery. For people who are concerned about range, the long range MG4 is a better choice.

    • @Dawheel90
      @Dawheel90 Год назад +4

      I agree, I have had my MG in Trophy version for just 10 day so I cannot compare to summer time, but I can tell the range it's more on 190-200 miles. To be fair, on MG website it tells you the expected range in different climate condition and it's really close to what I get. Also, driving style and modes make a big difference, since I started putting it in Eco most of the time I get way better mi/kWh figures.

    • @Bobblenob
      @Bobblenob Год назад

      Do you lose the AC in eco mode?

    • @robertgoldie5077
      @robertgoldie5077 Год назад

      If they have 200BHP equivalent as stated then they have the long range battery - but in lower trim level

    • @Dawheel90
      @Dawheel90 Год назад +1

      @@Bobblenob there are actually two different Eco modes.
      One is the Eco Driving mode, found among the other four (Sport, Normal, Snow and Costum) and that basically sets the accelerator response to be softer, the regen stronger, steering to normal and other less important thing, and that's what I was referring to and with that HVAC is fully working.
      The other one is called Eco Driving Setting (Indeed to double check), it's just an option on/off in the driving menu and I think it's just for when you're desperate to get every single watt in order to reach your destination, and I've never tried yet but I think shuts down everything that's not safety feature or legal requirement, so I would think that cuts some HVAC functions, I'll try and let you know.

    • @Dawheel90
      @Dawheel90 Год назад

      @@robertgoldie5077 no she's wrong in this video, because in a previous one she specified they have the SR. Also in another previous video, the one when they fully packed the back to move stuff from house to house, the car was 100% charged and the range indicated was 180ish miles.

    Another excellent review by you on this channel..these are the best reviews as you have both been 'living' with the car & not just reviewing it...there is a big difference..the minus points are what I term 'splitting hairs' so it's hardly not going stop your enjoyment of ownership. Battery wise winter is bound to take its toll just maybe when MG do a 'face-lift' then this issue might just be tackled. All in all excellent review & keep up the great work with the channel 👍

Pleased you haven’t had any of the problems reported on the MG EV website or MG4 owners and fans group on Facebook. Software problems seem horrendous with some people getting trapped in their cars due to key not being recognised and many other issues to numerous to mention here. You give me hope! I really want one, cancelled my first order and have decided to wait til the new year in the hope any issues will be ironed out😊. MG do seem to be solving them.

      Well I just ordered the trophy version yesterday and have a 4month wait so I'm sure there will be many updates till then, also the more expensive trophy long range (270 mile) version has the more expensive NMC battery so the range doesn't drop as bad in the winter weather.

      Unfortunately it is precisely because it's LFP that it is affected much more by cold weather. So although I would normally always recommend LFP for its longevity and user-friendliness, for someone who sees a lot of cold weather it might actually make more sense to get the LR for its NMC batteries. The other option of course is to pre-condition your battery before you need to drive, especially when it's still plugged in. This way the battery is already warm when you start driving and will lose less range.

    My Winter experience (I live in southern Bavaria) after 10 days of use: I managed to move the car with 14 kWh/100 km which is summer-typical. The case was: I drove the car before the statistics started, so it started with a warmed car. So the main issue is the temperature of your parking place. If you have got a warm garage, the additional winter energy amount is much less. In opposite: I used the pre-heating of the battery and it took a lot of distance (20 miles) until it drops under 30 kWh/100 km.
    I am very excited about the next software update (end of Dec or Jan). There are lots of bugs. For example: Planned charging via App does not work, it always forgets the setting. Sometimes, I cannot heat both the front glass and the interior area. I hope that the font size gets enlarged.

    I had the Peugeot e208 before & swapped out the MG4 trophy with the log range. Really pleased with the range & accuracy of the mileage prediction. In the e208 I called it EV miles that had no real world application. Love the look and general drive. Have bought a lumbar cushion for the seat. I like the higher driving position and feel of light & being able to see out.
    My negatives would be the lane assist and not being able to set a preferred driving pattern. Have to reset for each journey that takes time. The touch screen could be more responsive. Cruises control- you have to minimise the range it picks the car up in front or you are randomly braking and when it perceives a curve in the road it slows when there isn’t a need. I am finding the heater needs to be about 22-24oC to be warm enough.
    Most ‘difference’ otherwise is just me getting used to it. As my 2nd EV I am really pleased.

    • @chrismoule7242
      @chrismoule7242 Год назад +1

      To be fair, the lane assist is an issue on my latest petrol Hyundai i30 [22 reg]. On the previous i30 [18 reg] it would retain the setting. This new one doesn't & insists on the full assist as the default - which is, in my opinion, downright dangerous as it takes over the steering during what I regard as quite normal driving. So it may be the price we have to pay for "modern car safety".

Thankfully we don't have cold months here so we won't have the range issues. The reason for winter range loss is 1) that is the LFP battery, which is more sensitive to temperature loss 2) Probably the reviewer didn't do any preconditioning of the battery either. So you don't need to wait, if winter range matters to you buy the long range one without LFP battery. Btw, LFP batteries will become more and more common (as they are a lot cheaper, safer, and even less affected by degradation) so the issue won't "get better". If anything more cars will face it, as fewer models wil retain NMC batteries.

I have never owned an EV but I have one on order for delivery early 2023, the MG4 Trophy LR. Hopefully the drop in range during the winter will not be a problem for us as we hardly ever do long trips. I picked the Trophy model because I'm a lousy parker, (as well as a nosey parker), so I need the 360 camera! I look forward to the next report! Good review! Most EV's suffer from the lag between turning it on and being able to move off but it can be worse on some vehicles when it allows you to select the drive mode before the car is ready and then you have to turn off and on again. My Nissan work van does it a lot because I'm impatient. Lose of range in the colder months (due to using the heater) seems a bit more than normal on the MG 4. Most EV's I've driven seem to lose 30 miles of range once the heater is on, though it obviously goes back up a little once you turn the heating off again.

  • @2011ppower
    @2011ppower Год назад +9

    A major factor in reduction of winter range is the cabin heater which in this model is basically a fan heater run entirely of the battery. The lack of heated seats on the lower trim models mean you have to rely solely on the heater which is a less efficient way of staying warm.

    Interesting the extent of the range drop in cold weather. Short range (compounded by the immature public charging network) and high initial purchase cost are the main things keeping me away from EVs, and while MG have answered the purchase cost question (let's hope others do too, and soon) the limited range is still an issue for me. I live in a small city where walking and cycling make a lot of sense, but have relatives and friends spread across the UK so when I drive I need a comfortable 200-300 mile range.

    Winter month loss of range. A sub-zero battery temp will dramatically affect charge; that's just thermodynamics, no getting around it. When it's very cold, turn on your battery preconditioner - not all the way, just for a little while - and this will warm the battery and you'll achieve full range again. This really should be done by the BMS but you can do it manually.

    When you turn on Air-condition MG4, you can hear very loud annoying noise anyone agree with me? (you have to hear it from outside of the car)

    Get a rear seat belt extender from an auto accessory shop.

    Range is still the main talking point, particularly in winter. I was reading that over 15 degrees is the best temperature for battery operation. The average UK temperature is around 10 I believe.
    Certainly looks smart and well layer out, and MG are showing that a decent EV can be done at a comparable price to ice options.
    Glitches seem another issue, not refined to MG, but I sure it will improve.

    Range drops so quick cos your car is entry level that’s the reason unfortunately..but you can’t get cheaper then mg4 on ev market 🧐🧐

      Its the main downside to EV's. Unfortunately you lose some range when cold. Thanks

    unsure what version this is might have included that i the titel.
    but i thot the highest version has a heatpump...
    if your in a cold country the its always best to buy a car with heatpump. No mather what the caresalesman says! unless you like losing a huge range in the winter

    Reasons to wait until you buy imo ....Lack of rear interior light .. The odd shape steering wheel... Cheap exterior Perspex sections loud indicator sound....seat quality will not last a reasonable time..Winter range is dire ..Ltd Colour options...Not easy for disabled or elderly to enter/exit as sills are very wide...rear doors dont open far enough. Dark/drab interior. Plastic wheel covers. High beam assist/lane assist problems. Extra for a granny charger Will wait for Mk 2 before even considering.

    • @danuk2005
      @danuk2005 Год назад +3

      I believe that that indicator volume can be adjusted. There are alloy wheels behind the plastic wheel covers.
      Granny chargers now come as standard
      Rear doors actually do open very wide.
      Unfortunately compromises have been made to keep the price low.
      Perhaps something like a Kia niro or Hyundai Kona would better suit you.
      More expensive but better range etc

      @pamberinehondo9447 Год назад +4

      Well aren't you a bundle of joy?? Kids long left home so no rear light not an issue, steering wheel shape is brilliant and front screen always visible and it works for Lewis Hamilton, Don't find the Perspex sections cheap at all and Indicator sound can be adjusted!!. Cannot comment on seat quality as after 3 months ours are still as new and driven 3,800 miles. Also I am 16 stone and 6ft 3 ins, so they have a bulk to contend with. Winter range is reduced like any other EV but we went South on M1 last weekend and averaged 204 miles with Climate set at 21 degrees which is hardly "dire".....the rest of your comments are also incorrect as we have not encountered any issue with all the other points and if it is that much of an issue having wheel covers then take them off and drive on the perfectly good Alloys underneath. Better still, get a KIA, but they also have a 35/40% range drop in Winter, but also have a 7 year warranty!!!

  • @Ashtarot77
    @Ashtarot77 Год назад

    I had to move the car a few inches forward so my neighbour wouldn't be boxed in parked behind me, and the screen coming on before I could do that, wasn't a factor.

      Total nonsense. A mid range polo is £22k. With an EV you could save £500 a year on fuel.
      Ps. Tesla makes a large number of its cars in China.
