My personal favourite out of all Evos. In a semi-Group A spec it went toe to toe with WRC machinery. Post 1996 Imprezas and all later Evos are 'just' roadcars but no homologation cars for the greatest of all rally competitions, WRC.
I am going to be bias here, cos I believe that alongside the late Richard Burns, Tommi Makinen is the greatest rally driver of the last 25 years. Love the video, love the car.

@@K2theK-b6u I own one. Evo's are just fwd with rear wheel power. Proper tire management makes even the base lancer pretty sharp. Just slow to accelerate.
Great video James. The GSR model is the version you are driving, whereas the RS is the rarest model and came with steel wheels from factory, unpainted mirrors and handles, a shorter final drive ratio and were predominantly in Scotia White (Though 1 model was sold in Satellite Silver and 1 was sold in Passion Red making them truly unique). I believe the GSR model is the most desired in terms of value and much more collectible but the RS is the most raw and hardcore drivers variant. 😀
Yes agreed and a good summary. The other thing is that the RS lacked the AYC of the GSR. I test drove both versions up at Ralliart in 2000 before buying TME UK car no 004 in Canal Blue, just like this one in the vid. I wanted it for road use so plumped for the GSR version.
Everything you said of the Lancer was what I expected to be said of the Integrale, let's hope you don't start a rise in 90s Evo prices from this conclusion!
Pulls it to 3500rpm, says it's not as fast as you'd expect 😂, you have to keep the pedal pressed down a bit longer Jay lad! What a channel this is turning out to be though, ace motors and top bloke behind the wheel.
Tommi Makinen edition (evo 6.5) had the shorter steering ratio of later evos (7, 8, 9) compared to 5 and 6. The RS weighed 1260kg and lacked AYC (but still had ACD), A/C, sound system, had standard Lancer seats and small steel wheels. GSR had them all and weighed 1360kg. RS was quite rare until evo 8 and 9 as it was more for people and teams to use as base for their race builds. Although Evo 10 is nice out of the box stock, I think it is kind of large and heavy for what it is. Also, if the car has some Japanese brand aftermarket suspension system, they tend to be crashy and bouncy (mainly Tein, but pretty much all of them, HKS, Zeal, etc), they focus too much on high spring rates only.
An absolute legend this it brings a tear to my man pride for two reasons one I nearly bought one for about 10K back in the day and it would be worth a lot more now, second because they stop making them 😪 in 2001 I got a Mitsubishi FTO GPX mivec instead, not a lot of people know its an Evo 6 with a prettier shell on top, and an advanced V6 and gearbox. Mitsubishi always proved to be that little bit better in the engineering department I like Subarus but if you compare and EVO 10 or the previous generations the evolution of those cars was so much better as you can see on Top Gear funny clip thrown around the tracker 110 miles an hour they handle better than supercars. Every petrol head should be contacting Mitsubishi and begging them to bring out a new one instead of their borrowing suv they have now.
I've owned an 93 EVO 2 Integrale and a 95 Lancer Evolution III at the same time. the Lancer was lighter, had more extras and was much faster and easier to drive, but the Integrale was more exiting, the oldschool rally car.
Brilliant Review. The quicker you drive them the better they are. Awesome handling and dynamics..........as you say there’s some clever shit going on beneath the car...
I owned this exact colour and spec although mine was a 3 year old ralliart uk spec (even less of them around, just meant things like the fog light were integrated into the bumper rather than hanging off it!). The front bumper was the classic difference between a normal evo vi and my one came with Mitsubishi warranty but it never missed a beat (only problem I had was a clunking noise on the front diff on full turn due to Mitsubishi putting the wrong length screws in the front diff so they sheared off). On B roads nothing could touch it back in the day and that gearbox was a dream, short shifting and precise. Happy days

That car in that colour, never thought a VI TME would look better than being Red or white. I've heard Silver TMEs are rare. I don't think it's rare compared to this colour.
I remember when this car appeared & they had to compare it with the fastest exotics because nothing else came close. But nothing could actually beat it. They actually recommended the best from BMW & Audi because they offered a significant amount of the EVO's speed with much better comfort's to enjoy, plus the EVO could only beat them when it was flat out. The EVO VI TME RS is even faster due to even more weight reductions, think the fastest exotics would be even more humbled. Think it's a low 12sec 1/4 mile car & still the fastest track EVO to this day due to it's lighter weight. Reliable buggers too, it's a combination of Mitsubishi's best & most durable technologies.
Amazing review as always. Have you thought about trying the more powerful versions that came out of the factory? (FQ-360/FQ-400/FQ-440). The most powerful version has more power than any BMW NA V8 put on the road.
@@Alex-jn1xz They were but only in technically, it’s why the new Merc A45 S can’t claim to be the most powerful, bc they were production limited edition cars.
The EVO VI TME RS & Ralliart versions in the UK were actually the fastest track cars in the series. I believe the suspension was overly stiff from the factory. The Evo X I reviewed years ago has a brutal suspension. It was flat out unpleasant around the roads in S.E. Michigan.
Subaru were probably more famous in Rallying. Mostly thanks to the late great Colin Mcrae but the EVO VI was the far better driving road car with much less understeer than the Scooby.
@@sallypowers1131 Yes he probably was, measures of success and fame are 2 different things though..... @@BillyBoy444 I would say Colin was probably the most flamboyant driver I've seen brilliant to watch but was not being Constance was is down fall he either do a blinding drive or crash..
@@sallypowers1131 Yes he drove to push the limits more than most others and hence if you are pushing it to the limit then sometimes you are going to crash. i owned a TME too, but i found the evo IX i owned later to be much, much better in almost every way! but the TME was more special and exotic.. haven't seen one in years now :(
Great video!
i want to buy it !!
I believe the suspension was overly stiff from the factory. The Evo X I reviewed years ago has a brutal suspension. It was flat out unpleasant around the roads in S.E. Michigan.
I wondered if the actors from the M&M adverts would find any other work
First timr ive heard someone use the term telepathic steering
Amazing content 👌
My go to car in Forza 1, Forza 2 Forza 3 and 4. Easily my favorite car to drive in gaming. apart from the Bentley F1 car in Forza .
Subaru were probably more famous in Rallying. Mostly thanks to the late great Colin Mcrae but the EVO VI was the far better driving road car with much less understeer than the Scooby.
Tommi Makinen was a more successful driver than Colin McRae, hence 4 driver championship to 1
@MunroM84 Look at my wording.... I didn't say Subaru were more dominant but more Famous. Especially in the mid 90's.
@@sallypowers1131 Yes he probably was, measures of success and fame are 2 different things though..... It's like comparing Schumacher with Hamilton..... also success for any driver, comes about from having a better car..... There's success and dominance, which go hand in hand but talent is a better measure of a driver IMO but lets not get into that argument :)
Most racing drivers, drive at 90% for 90% of the time and the other 10% they are giving 100% but Mcrae gave 100% at least 90% of the time and the other 10% he crashed or had car failures (his car failed more than others because he was pushing it to the limit and therefore being harder or the mechanicals) All the best drivers crash because they are driving to the absolute limit and then there are those who drive the best car in their field and don't need to push it to the absolute limit but they still look good because they are winning but it's actually the car that's really winning.
Looking forward to you testing the Eddie Eagle XII Predator vs Alien Direct Port Injection Shooting Brake 5.8L Special Fukishima SF1 Limited Edition Turbo.
