Evos are the pinnacle of Japanese cars for me. Sure some make more power, but the evo has the most utility, handles exceptionally well and you can pull good power from the 4g63. Biggest regret I have was selling my evo 8 for the 33 gtr, evo was a much nicer car to live with.
Yes an evo definitely feels more nimble and is a more enjoyable drive, but if you go to R35 then that's just a different animal, and nothing from Japan will really compare to that in terms of performance
Different front diff too. Especially in RS spec where AYC is deleted and all 3 diffs are mechanical LSD. As an owner, love them. Mines on my channel, bigger engine to keep it responsive and much better than evo7+
I have both a 5rs race car and a 7 that I use for trackdays etc currently. Used to own a 6 tme but sold it a while ago. To say much better is a stretch.. They're very, very different cars. The 4-6 is a much smaller car and is more nimble. The 7-9 is far more refined, stable and generally stronger engines (albeit they all need forging for big power, the 5rs has a forged 8mr engine in it for example). The adjustability of the ACD is really nice too. On a wet track in gravel/snow it locks the center and you get more traction than the earlier cars. But the 4-6 are definitely faster due to shorter wheelbase and lighter weight
I didn't believe the TME had a different front diff unless you had some limited special version. It was an open front diff just like the regular 6. I owned a 6.5 TME (GSR spec if you want to use that way of saying it wasn't a TME RS).
@@mattyburrows9059 I always dreamed of one of those. That even little.bit more exclusive. And the zero fighter model which I believe was one the Japanese got.
I fell in love with Evos playing gran Turismo 2 as a kid. Growing up I never liked the interior of the CPs. I have an 8 now and the interior looks way better to me. More modern and simple. The CPs looked outdated even in the early 2000s when they were still fairly new.
Great vid big fella they are an awesome bit of kit. Mr Makinens fav evo was the E3 which he won the first WRC championship with. Keep up the awesome work
I love the WRC and the Tommi, McRae and Sainz years were the heyday for me. I sided with McRae and Subaru but was always a fan of Tommi and that EVO. I like other EVOs but there’s only one I crave. The 6.5 TME! Unfortunately they seem more unobtainable everyday!
They have a boost pill in the vacuum hose in standard boost controller . I pulled mine out u get about 30 whp and come rich from factory. These came with better gauge cluster in white and automatic climate control
I had one of these bought it from overseas jumped right on left hand drive too. Unfortunately it was stolen after ONE MONTH FROM GARAGE. Till this day not a day goes by thinking of the car
100% agree about the dash, who cares you are driving a fast car you shouldn't be looking at the dash... Same as the FG XR6 Turbo all the press wrote that it was a great car but a shame about the dash, who cares ur driving a barra ur not sitting there twaddling over the dash.
I strongly disagree about the Evo interior. I think modern cars somehow feel more cheap and hollow with their plastic. The 90's economy car interior still feels more rigid, stiff, and confidence inspiring. The cloth on the seats looks nice, especially on the non-TME versions. It's minimalistic and utilitarian. But it's more sleek and rigid than modern cars.
Hey Hawko, how would you compare the TME 6.5 vs a Renault Megane RS 265? I've experienced the RS265, utterly transparent, communicative, balanced and unfortunately a chore to drive in traffic, just needs to be let of the chain to really enjoy it the way it was made to be driven, almost to track focussed. Wondering if there is too much time that can't hide the development after the peak Rally days, gawd I miss the old ARC days.
Modifying a TME is a crime, it literally kills the cars value, TME is perfect in stock form, if u dont think so, u probably can't drive car well at its limits. :)
You are right about the interior, they are boring and so similar to a base lancer/mirage. But once you start driving it your like forget about the interior this things so fun to drive!
Evo 2-3 is best ive owned the years, all different models minus 10 4 an 1 an evo 2-3 were defs the raw est an faster with less things done to them tme / 5 are still good tho
In my humble opinion, I believe that evo3. Was the best Evo, out of them all to be released. Simple factor that they are 1300 kgs and the first 206kw rated 4G63. The purpose of a four-cylinder is to be light. The earlier ones, are just way to heavy and are the opposite of what a 4-cylinder should be.
My house mate has a TME in Satalite Silver with 47k miles on it , has been modified to 657bhp with HKS cams among side many other things previous owner tracked it a fair few times he paid 30k for it on the . and is hoping to sell for more when Americans can buy it cool cars sticks like shit and in high boost settings scarily fast
As a Nissan guy that now lives In japan with our roads and let’s just say lack of police in the country side , I drove one and it was like cheating, it gives but they also take away driver skills and reaction ability..... yes I did love it way too much for a Nissan boy.... but the thrill of a RWD car hoping it’s ass out over a bump around a corner on a mountain road out here that’s irreplaceable... that moment your like fu-k I’m still alive moment 😂
The fact that ALL WRC EVOs are Left-Hand Drive then the consumer production cars are all RHD, Japan is fvcking stvpid. One thing I hate about Japan, UK & Australia - RHD.
It is not true. Evo 5 and evo 6 were available in LHD. I do have a evo 6 rs2 wich is LHD from factory. More rhd were made, for sure, but lhd evo 6 were sold in europe/asia. My car has been sold brand new in belgium by mitsubishi.
@@laurentthiancourt8779 What I meant was this particular model - Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition. I think only a handful of them were made in LHD from factory like 20+ only available in Canada and Europe. And they are hard to come by. It's like looking for a treasure.
A red Tommi Makinen is one of the most iconic cars to come out of Japan, and were real monsters when they were released

Yeah but the r35 isn't a manual and has too much electronic interference for driving purists, whereas cars like the evo 6 were the sweet spot
Evo 10 for a daily driver
Evo 7-9 as a fun weekender
Evo 5/6 as a raw track car
