      My criteria for deciding whether a hobby has "gone too far" are basically: Is it negatively impacting their ability to handle their financial responsibilities? Is it compulsive? Is it inhibiting or damaging their ability to contribute to the relationships they have with others? If the answer to any of those is 'yes' then it might be time to pause and consider some adjustments. If the answer to all of those is 'no', then I don't see a problem. And if it's not a problem, I see no reason for anyone else to criticize. They don't have to understand to be supportive :-)

    I really wish that I had a "doll room" - I've always shared my studio (I'm an artist) space with it. When I lived on the east coast, that wasn't so bad because my studio space was truly enormous - I also had a whole livingroom/snack area as well - and I had three custom made houses - one which was wider and only two shelves (my historicals on each storey, Kaya's 'outside' area on top), and two taller, narrower ones for my modern dolls. I think the rooms each were 2ft deep, by 2ft tall, and 3ft wide, with the historicals being 4ft wide, but it wasn't modular, they were solid pieces.
    But since moving to SoCal, house-money just doesn't get you the same amount of space out here. My studio as well as holding my dolls now also holds my adult kiddo's dolls, AND my studio, and our guest room - and is a smaller space as well. We didn't bring those custom built doll houses with, so I ended up purchasing some Ikea closet shelving, I forget the name, but the ones that are *just* shy of being 2ft deep. They're definitely the least hassle out of every option that I considered, and with wood prices being what they are after covid, the most cost efficient.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  Год назад +1

      Yeah, I know cost of living and the square footage your money will get you vary so much based on location. I know ppl (often with very good reason) talk crap about the midwest, but I am definitely grateful that -even in a crap housing market where affordable living is harder to come by than honest politicians- we were able to find a home that gives us some extra room. I've mentioned before that my doll room doubles as my office and the whole thing is only 10' or 11' x 13'. So it's pretty small. Still...it's ours and we don't anticipate moving any time soon, so it's nice to know we have this dedicated space.
      Re: those Ikea shelves, are they the Pax ones? Those are the ones I see doll collectors use most frequently. I'd love to see pics of your dollhouses (present and former). Do you have pics of them on your agig?

      @@agtakesover I do have photos of the Ikea ones - yep, they're PAX, I had to go back and check in my IG. I've pics of the planning process, and then after they were just put in, but no wide shots since because I'm still working on decorating it, but there are of individual rooms as I've been working on or finishing them. (I'm SO slow.) Hoping to be able to take an updated wider angle shot of them all during spring break.
      Hah, the only thing I worry about with the mid-west historically has been safety - you and Grace haven't found that to be an issue? I imagine it is as much there as anywhere really... there was a decent turn out at a recent rally involving grown men in white sheets in my city, which everyone always thinks of being quite liberal, so *whatcha gonna do*?

    I currently have an OG Sweet Home dollhouse set up in my bedroom. I also have a KidKraft dollhouse that has yet to be set up (because I don’t have the room for it yet in my apt). Accidentally ended up with two of them because I settled for KidKraft first & bought it when I really wanted the OG one! The OG kept going out of stock and so I had to constantly be on the lookout for it being In Stock! Once it became available again I snatched one up! But since I had already taken the KidKraft house out of the packaging and tossed the box, I couldn’t return it! (I also need to do a paint job on the KidKraft dollhouse because I don’t like how busy the backdrop is on that one). But being DB, I’m not totally sure how I can go about doing that. On top of the wardrobe is another make shift room (total of 32 rooms [mini room for my Glitter Girls dolls(cheap version of Wellie Wisher)]. Two of the dollhouses don't have a roof(movers threw one away, and the other one, I like it without it. For the windows in the My Girl's Dollhouses, I use 3M hooks, 2 pencils(curtain rods[held together with rubber bands]), bandanas, or old curtains cut up for the curtains. The walls in the dollhouse ,I use Postal boxes, covered in wrapping paper, or contact paper (without the backing taken off ,just tape it to the Postal box with packing tape). I do this so when I want to change a room,all I need is more Postal boxes whatever I'm using and packaging tape. I tried putting the contact paper on the walls major headache. I used Duct Tape Sheets, also a pain in the butt. I TOTALLY PREFER my Postal boxes (the tallest ones, Our Post office, the boxes are free). If you ever decide to change up your My Girl's Dollhouse, here are the dimensions of the rooms: Back: 22"H x 28" L ,Side: 22"H x 20" L, Window sides: 22"H x 5 1/2" L( left and right side

    I am hopeful that in the future I will be able to have a doll house I am saving furniture pieces I find at goodwill for cheap but good and stuff from Walmart but right now I am focused on not letting the dolls take over my limited space completely and I would also like to have a area to make my videos while having my dolls as my background which would be great
    I really like your doll house and ur ideas to make them look more realistic is awesome love the curtains never would have thought about it
    Thank you for the tour I appreciate it alot

      It's smart to get things that you find great deals on. I find it helpful to keep a running list on my phone of what I have already. This was especially important in the beginning. I also think you are wise to hold off on it until you figure out the size that you want your collection and how you want to manage your space. Thanks for the compliments about our dollhouses... I am glad you enjoyed getting to see them!

      I'm going to post a video sometime soonish about making a collapsible rom out of foam board. Super affordable and they don't take up much room. Maybe that would be more doable?

    Did u custom build the walls/house? If so do u have a tutorial/video of u making them, and if not where do u buy them???

    • @agtakesover

      I built the 3rd dollhouse with a friend. If you watch that section, I give all the specs for it. I don't have a separate tutorial for it because I made this long before starting my channel. But I do cover the measurements and thickness of wood, et cetera in this video.

    I have the same dollhouse you showed first. I got it for $25 from a family that was moving. How did you paint the walls? They have a glossy finish. Did it take paint well? Did you need to do any special prep?

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  Год назад

      What a steal!! I initially tried the wallpaper and spray adhesive trick (that was a fail in most of the rooms). That might have helped the paint stick. I didn't have any trouble with the pain not sticking. In the end, one wall was returned to its original state, one was covered with wrapping paper, one was covered with contact paper, and two were painted.

    Do you happen to know the dimensions of the yellow bunkbed set? Do you recommend it? I’m thinking of bunk beds and the desk set for a Nicki and Isabel room. I don’t want to spend $300 on their beds. I’m not opposed to spending $ (seeing as I’ve spent too much as it is) but it needs to be for something I really like. I also don’t have a lot a lot of space since Courtney’s room takes up almost the whole third story of the doll house.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  Год назад +1

      I just went down and measured them. 20.5" long, a little over 12" wide, and almost 17.5" tall (so a hair smaller than Courtney's bed). I would totally recommend them. They're a space saver, they're legitimately from the 90s, and you can usually find them easily enough on FB Marketplace (for WAY cheaper than the twins' beds).

I also love your voice… there’s just something about it, it’s professional and calming at the same time 😊. Anyway l’m looking to have my husband build a house for me, I mean my girls and I love the sofa set in your upstairs 1 level house. Do you by chance remember where it’s from?
